Ok, that might be a tad dramatic, but I am leading a team of geneticists tasked with solving the vampire problem that's plagued the world for two hundred years. Oh, and I have to find a way to give the turned their humanity back. No pressure, right?
When my hot billionaire boss demands results after yet another vampire attack, I join his next nest-extermination operation to bag a live vampire test subject.
I'd planned on coming back with a blood-thirsty new coworker, but I wasn't expecting the Fates to throw a couple of shifters in my path, too. Here I am worried about the body count the vampires are leaving in their wake, but the Fates seem more interested in mine. Add in the attention I'm getting from my boss, and I'm stuck in the middle of a love pentagram.
The pressure's mounting, bodies are piling up, everyone's counting on me to crack the mysteries locked in the blood of the turned wide open, and my magic's going haywire.
4.4 stars. So good. I really loved the snippets of humor sprinkled throughout. (‘Brother-husbands’ being one that continuously made me cackle) Evie was so confident with her sexuality, and so smart and just a complete Badass. And I loved it. Then her men. They were each so different in their own ways. I loved how they all fit together. The plot was dangerous, but still smooth and simple but satisfying. I loved how it took something brought up in the previous book and not only expanded on it, but tried to solve it. So freaking satisfying.
The sex was hot. The emotions were high and in all sorts of directions. Sad, happy, amused as hell.. The relationships developed perfectly, for me.
I just really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see what the final book will be like.
I've not been reading all books in this shared universe so far, but I did read all books by Sterling Thomas in this shared universe. And that's mostly because I really love how Thomas writes her romances. I was therefore quite curious to see what kind of story this was going to be, especially because the possibilities in this universe are endless. So, when I was offered an arc, there was no way I was ever gonna say no to that.
The first thing I absolutely loved about this book, is that our heroine is incredibly smart and intelligent and acting that way. I liked the scientific environment, I liked how, because of her scientific background, she could look at people without judgement, with an open mind and an open heart. After all, in science we are used to facts being challenged, to things we thought we knew being proven untrue. We are okay with our world being changed for the better.
And our heroine needs it in this story. The world is having a vampire problem and it's up to our heroine to figure out how to solve it. Her research doesn't go where she thinks it's going, but quite soon we discover that something way more awesome is possible. And even though the focus wasn't on the science, the science was well done. The discoveries seemed very logical and they also really made sense. The scientific explanations made sense.
Although I mostly loved the science in this book, I also loved the harem. Of course, I don't want to give too much away, but without making it too easy, I liked how Thomas had the guys build this connection. Of course, their loyalty and love was mostly directed towards their girl, but they knew that her happiness also depended on their happiness and each other's happiness. And in the end this resulted in a close unit always having each other's back.
I really really enjoyed this story. I love Evie’s sassiness, intelligence, and determination to help vampires for science. Her mates are yummy. The story is wonderful. The characters are great. The scenes are steamy. Pick this book up for a great read!
Destined to Rise is another great addition to the Shifting Society series. This book gives readers a new character to follow along with as Evie works to find a way to cure those who have been bitten by vampires had their lives ripped away. Along the way, she's going to find her mates one by one and things are going to really get wild. Destined to Rise is one of those books that really had me all over the place. I started off liking Evangeline, but when she opens that mouth of hers all bets are off. It's pretty obvious that she has no qualms speaking her mind, but more often than not she really takes things too far. I don't mind "sassy" characters, but there were honestly moments of where Evie was just downright disrespectful. That's a problem for me, but what made matters worse for me is that there is no reprimand. I get that this is fiction, but there should have been a reprimand for her. Interrupting multiple phone calls and being rude to the boss shouldn't just be allowed to slide. It's too much. There is a lot of back and forth in this book and I have to admit that I like all the twists and the surprises that the author packs into this book. It really kept me on my toes and page-turning to learn what was going to happen next. My favorite out of all the characters is probably Luca. He's a really relaxed character and he doesn't push things, unlike Evie. I do come around to liking her, for the most part, but I really think that the "I have no filter" excuse only flies so far. Sorry not sorry. At the end of the day I really did enjoy this book and I look forward to more from this world. I'm rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I think that I would have liked it better if Archer, as the boss had reprimanded Evie as his employee. It just doesn't make sense that he'd let her be that disrespectful to him. The rest of the book is a lot of fun and the steamy scenes are worthwhile.
This story is simply fantastic and is a great addition to the shifting society series! Well written we meet Evie who is in charge of a team of geneticists tasked with solving the vampire problem that roams the earth so no pressure or anything! Along the way she picks up four mates, yep four and I just love their interactions, their banter and their growing and budding relationships. It’s got action, adventure, danger, drama, humour and steamy romance and I loved it!
I really enjoyed Evie her caracter. Feisty and fierce. Now what to do when your boss asks near impossible things? Going on a hunt to find a vampire to test on. Only that goes a little haywire when fate decides to step in and throw a few mates your way, the shifter kind. Haven't seen a lot of vampire action in this series so this was nice for a change. Trying to turn them back human by genitics an amazing idea! I really need more of these. Anyway the guys, yum! They are amazing but as a group a force to be reckoned with and I love the dynamic here. I'm a sucker for it I know but it's so good!
Evie is a feisty One and She gives a lot to think to her mates. The vampire dide of things is very interesting and I loved how we got to see how prejudice and abuse are viwed from our chatecters. It a very interesting book and the whole universe it contains os really enjoyable.
What a phenomenal and fabulous read! This was my first time reading Sterling Thomas and let me just say I am definitely a fan! Destined To Rise pulled me in right from the start with incredible world building, amazing characters with beautiful development and a dynamic storyline that just kept giving!
Be prepared to enter into a world changed by evolution and the fates themselves, to a new way of life. A life where humankind evolved into a variety of supernatural beings (shifters, mages and even vampires) as a way to balance out the world after predators were previously hunted to the point of extinction. With lines and alliances clearly being drawn between the different groups and what remains of humankind, we discover that there is a common enemy that needs to be resolved—the blood driven vampires. But are they as lost and bloodthirsty as they all believe or is there hope that they can be brought back to “civilization”?
Which is where we find our brilliant and sassy heroine Evie, working in a research lab in hopes of discovering new ways to protect the supes, and after noticing something strange in her research, possibly even restoring humanity back to the feral vampires wreaking havoc on both the human and supernatural communities.
And let me just say I freaking loved Evie! She’s an independent genius badass that doesn’t take no for an answer and will go beyond the limits to find the answers she’s looking for—even if it means going up against her boss and the leaders of the expeditions. What transpires next is a journey of scientific discovery, as well as self discovery, for Evie and her four very sexy fated mates: Archer, Vice, Luca and Ash.
Overall, this was a definite must read! The storyline, the amazing new world, the beautifully charismatic characters that leapt off the pages as well as the off the charts chemistry and hot steamy scenes between Evie and her guys all make this book the hit that it is! If you’re a fan of paranormal RH romances then you need to read this one for sure! And while this story is part of a much longer series, with the world building more with each book, it’s not necessary to read them all to understand—though it’s highly recommended as that’s what I did after reading this one! Such an amazing journey!!!
Gosh dangit, Sterling Thomas made me feel all the feels with this book! From happy dances, to laughing, to fighting back tears, this book has it all.
Evie is such a spitfire of a character, a young genius determined to change the world. After one mission almost gone wrong, she meets her mates one by one, accepting fates choices quicker every time. I love that there is no denial of the bonds, but they still have to work on that complete acceptance with each other and their own insecurities.
First, Vice was mine, with his gruff demeanor but underneath he’s a coffee and tea connoisseur. That wins. But throw in dimples?? No touchy.
Luca is the easy going one, the glue to their pack. A sweetheart but fierce and loyal. He’s mine.
And then Archer. I was internally screaming (imagine that gif of the toddler in the stands, fists raised yelling “YES!” - that was me) when he and Evie met. C’mon, I was sold on him before I even read this book. Mine!
Ash. Oh, sweet Ash. You know that whole romance novel thing of the heroines choking back sobs? Good god that was me. Evie’s easy acceptance and trust. When they finalized the bond. Everything. I think he somehow managed to knock Vice’s dimples down to second place. Shocking, I know! I adore Ash.
This book is amazing and a great setup for the completion of the series in Destined to Dream. Everything is starting to wrap up nicely, and I’m so happy I got to read these books.
These amazing books have told a tale of what the world would be like if humankind "evolved" into what we know as Supernaturals. What if legends became truth in a world where all the predators have been hunted to extinction and the balance is completely off? The Fates have to correct this issue right? Evolution was the answer. Shifters, Mages, and Vampires. However not all humans evolved and the Supernaturals weren't accepted... At first. Are they in even human anymore? Do they still have any humanity left?? These are the questions the humans left want answered. So its a tense alliance too be sure... However... Both the humans and Supes agreed that the Vampires were the common enemy and need to be eradicated. They are vicious mindless monsters after all. Right?? But what if there was a way they could reconnect to that lost humanity?? This is that story!! Enjoy!!! I know I sure as heck did!!😘
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "DESTINED TO RISE" This story grab me right from the start I immediately fell in love with Evie Mathius & co-worker Sophia Ramirez scientists she's intelligent, genius, feisty, looking into blood samples from Vampires. Evie goes after her very wealthy gorgeous boss Archer Donavon about wanting a place to out a live Vampire to study take samples to figure out their problem & she wants to go out on an extermination run with the elite soldiers mage & shifter's. Evie didn't expect to see what she saw when she went out with elite soldiers she meets non other than her fated mate Vice Bellany later she meets the other three Archer, Luca & Ash she puts them through their paces. I definitely recommend to get this extremely well written story Evie trying to help humans turned Vampires, love the journey she takes with her mates as well loved all the characters made for one addicting read.
I liked this book better than the two prior books in the series. Not that I didn’t like those, but I thought this one had a more compellingly storyline that was very different from its predecessor’s. I like the shift to the vampire problem! I thought Evie’s character was so funny and I loved the way her story unfolds.
I did feel like the time jump at the end to the epilogue for a real solution and the way the resolution was still open ended was a little disappointing. I saw the author put a ‘thanks for reading the last in the series’ note at the end, but there is also another book that comes out after this one, so I was confused with that. I guess she meant the last from her and the next is the last from the other author? If this was the flat out end of the series I’d be mad about that ending 😅😅😅 but I can’t tell if the book that comes after is just a spin off or something that will help satisfy some of those loose ends.
Also… I was really hoping there would be something about the female vampire from the lab that Malcolm rescues at the end of Destined to Strike, but there’s nothing (even though Archer and Malcolm are supposedly best friends). I’m thinking/hoping that the final book is about them? But this part annoyed me, because even though these are stand-alone there is a lot in this series that is chronological and connected and I was waiting for some mention of it the entire time. This was has zero connection to the first 3 books in the series and only loose connections to the 4th, but you still need info from the previous books to understand what’s happening in this one. They say you can read these as stand-alone or out of order, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
I’ll admit, it’s not as bad as the other RHs I’ve read lately and at least the author tries to infuse actual feelings and not just smut into the story, but it’s riddled with so many clichés that it was hard to give this more than 2.5 stars.
The story itself was super interesting and I was fully invested in the vampire storyline.
However, the FMc was the merriest of all the Mary Sues.
She as a “fiery” 🙄 redhead with green eyes (1% of the population so super rare) who the author desperately wanted us to believe was a genius with like 6 PHDs (🙄🙄🙄) but she made a lot of rash, impulsive and outright stupid decisions consistently. So…yikes.
She’s supposedly as gorgeous as a supermodel. Which…yawn.
She was a powerful mage.
Mkay.
The words genius, brilliant and smart were shoved down our throats over 30 times throughout this story to describe the FMC.
The “harem” (I hate that word—it’s cheap and gross and devolves poly relationships into something completely shallow) are all super obsessed insta-lovey with her but at least they were different with distinctive looks and personalities. Though I had a hard time picturing them because she didn’t spend much time telling us what they looked like.
Lots of insta-love, insta-lust, insta pet names and endearments.
Ugh.
It was okay. I stayed for the story which ended up being good despite the stupid cliché BS.
I loved this addition to the Shifting Society world! It may actually even take the top spot in the series IMO. I love love love the shared world that J and Sterling have created together. These can all be read as standalone, but you'll get so much more if you read them in order.
This book tackles vampires! The one species we haven't seen too much in the series yet! We follow Evie who's a crazy smart scientist looking for any breakthrough that can help people turned into vampires. I love the backstory around vampires and it makes complete sense with the rest of the world.
We get a combination of world-building and relationship building in here. Sterling weave together a masterful tale that expands the lore and builds a really satisfying dynamic between the guys.
The FMC! Evie is such a babe. She's smart as all get out and loyal to a fault. I loved to see the sass that she gave to Archer and the rest of the guys. She's got a backbone and a brain to back it up. She does have to work through past issues, but I liked how she didn't fight the bond.
The Guys! Vice, Archer, Luca, Ash - oh buddy what a group of guys! Basically a grab-bag of species made into one unshakable unit. I loved to see the dynamics between all of the guys come out.
The Smut! So much steam in this one! Plus some special sexy group times 😉
What a fantastic story from Sterling Thomas! The main thing I absolutely loved about this story is that our heroine is super smart and she doesn't shy away from showing her intelligence. She has fantastic sass and is happy to put her haters in their place when they need to be placed there. The scientific environment aspect is a great setup for the story as well; she is a scientist that is hired to find a "treatment" for the vampire problem. There is a terrible viewpoint on vampires- they are looked at as mindless killing machines, much more like a zombie than anything else- and Evie's boss wants to fix it. What is great is that with her scientific background she can look at people without judgment and an open mind. This open mind comes in handy when she manages to get a live vampire to study, then the fun really starts!
Throughout the whole story I was completely enthralled with the actual science/mission of the group. It all seemed to be plausible, I could understand and follow along without question. The guys in her harem have a fantastic dynamic together already in place so when they discover their mate it all seems to click in place quite seamlessly. There are a few twists and turns that are thrown at you but it is all done perfectly and it flows effortlessly.
The world-building is perfect, you can see what's going on and what it all looks like. I really did get lost in this story, as I do with most of Sterling's books. She writes a great love story and the heat is definitely on par with her normal. I loved this book and would definitely recommend it to all RH PNR readers that have a love for shifters, mages, and vampires. You don't have to read them in order but you will have a better understanding of the world if you do.
A really enjoyable read. Evie is a brilliant researcher who works for a very rich man trying to find a way to make feral vampires more manageable. She works in a lab and has no problem telling her boss what she thinks of his way of collecting tissue and blood samples to study when she needs to be able to get those samples herself. Thus, she starts on her journey of discovery, not only in the lab, but within the organization she works for. She discovers her mates, he ability to love beyond what she could have imagined and the acceptance of family members for each other. There are some really wonderful dialogs and conversations about dealing with fear, prejudice, life experiences, etc., that for me made the book an even better read. If you enjoy RH, paranormal and stories rich with character development and growth, I think you'll really enjoy this book.
This has got to be one of my favourites of the A Shifting Society series. I absolutely loved Evie and her mates. Evie is a mage, she's also an absolute genius and working on finding a way to eradicate the vampires. But there's so much more going on with them than she ever knew and she wants to find all the answers. When she pushes to have her research go further, she slowly finds her mates one by one. They want to protect her, but she craves to find the answers to all her questions.
Evie is straight-talking and definitely speaks before she thinks. Three of her mates already know each other so that's a bonus and makes their bonds work out so much better. But there is one mate who I never saw coming and he's one of my favourites.
I'm hoping there is a little more to this story because it's absolutely amazing and there's so much more that could come of this story.
I am OBSESSED with this series of standalone books and I am sad to see it coming to an end, but I cannot wait for more work from the authors. I really enjoyed this installment and Evie is a laugh riot, not that she always means to be, but she is also caring and very in tune with the emotions and needs of those around her. She is no slouch in the fighting department either, although convincing her mates of this is quite the task. I really enjoyed this book on a personal level because I relate to Evie in her scientific way of thinking and actually want to go into genetics when I graduate, so that was a nice added bonus for me.
I really enjoyed the story and all of the characters. As with many standalones, there wasn't nearly the world-building and character development I would have liked, because of how much I liked what there was of the characters and their world. The steam was pretty low, but this is my first book from this series, so that may just be the norm here.
I loved Evie & her men pretty much taking on the world to battle hate and prejudice, and I loved how strong she was. Unlike so many stories, she never stops being as strong and brilliant as she is at the beginning of the story, it was a breath of fresh air.
Evie is a brilliant fiery redhead and I pretty much loved everything about her. (Not that I’m seeing any part of myself in her at all...) She and her mates add layers and layers to the definition of complicated as they race to uncover the secrets of the vampire world. Part paranormal romance, part medical thriller, this story sucked me in. I was quickly invested in how they would solve all the obstacles that kept being thrown in their way. I loved where this story got them to, but I’m desperate to know what will happen next. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author as part of the box set.
Loved this. The fifth book in the series and it is filled with danger and action. All the characters are so amazingly written. You really get to know them and with Evie I really can picture her. The red hair and her temper are just the start of her. She is beyond a brilliant scientist. She is working on vampires and how they become what they are by studying their blood. Can she find a cure or a way to stop others from being infected? This story will have you riveted with what will happen next. But don’t forget about the mates she will find. That brings a whole new level of tension and hotness to the story.
I love the storyline, it could have been much better without the ridiculous 4 mates. Although I know a write can make up at discretion anything, this is way too much. It would have been so much better if the author would have realized those that read shifter books love the exclusively one on one relationship. Take out the mates, and have one with the story and the book would deserve 5*. The other men can be in love and protect the woman, and the next book has one of them finding their own one on one mate. Agree or not, I'm not reading anymore of this authors books.
I love this universe and I love that vampires are brought into the matings in this book. Evie is a very intelligent, beautiful prodigy who doesn't take crap from anyone. On a mission to find a cure for vampires or to bring back their humanity she never expects to find her mate, let alone four. One of them she never would have dreamed as they are from totally different ways of life and another will turn their life upside down. Dynamics were great, the humanity in the book was awesome and Evie was fantastic!! Definitely recommend this read.
Destined to Rise was absolutely fabulous! Sterling Thomas is a newish author to me, but with each book I read they keep getting better and better. Evie works for filthy rich man doing research on a way to cure vampires. What she never expects is to meet her mate, let alone four of them. I truly adored Evie and all the sass she gives her men, (Archer, Vice, Luca, Ash). I really enjoyed the character growth throughout this book, and I loved the banter and interactions between the characters. If you like RH paranormal romance you will love this book and it’s one I highly recommend.
Destined to rise is a standalone book in the Shifter Society series. Smart, Quirky and Strong Willed Evie is completely work orientated. To try to find out a cure to fix the Vampire predicament. Evie had me laughing from the start to the finish of this book. Her relationship with the guys. Yes its full of ups and downs but at the heart of it was a sweet, genuinely caring one as well as an endearing one too. I was utterly drawn into this book and i loved all the characters in it. A damn fine read
This book was a great addition to the universe, and I absolutely love how it shows the reality of peoples prejudice and hate when they don’t know or understand new things. The book shows Evies fire and determination, as well as her growth, and love for her mates. Even if that growth includes plenty of exasperation. Because truly, who has time for multiple men when you’re trying to save the world? Lol. The growth that even her mates go through, along with her, is inspiring and heartfelt. I adored the book, Evie, and her mates.
This is my first of Sterling Thomas' books, I am not disappointed! The style of writing is easy to follow and intriguing to the reader. Great detail and world building. The story premise is fascinating in that the FMC has been tasked with finding the cure to vampirism. Along the way we see how the supernaturals have prejudices about each other and how some come to open their eyes about their hateful ways. Everyone seems to hold the belief that fated mates are a myth, but Evie seems to be overly blessed! Great book!
Sterling has created a world full of intrigue and charismatic characters that will pull you in and hold you captive from the first to the last word.
Evie is an amazing FMC she is a badass with the intelligence to take on Tony Stark, she is fearless in her desire to find a way to solve the vampire problem. I love the way she accepts her bonds with the guys bit that they still need time to fully understand one another.
This is a brilliantly written story, with great character and a story line that keeps you glued.
Evie, a genius scientist, is working on the vampire problem that has plagued the world for the past two hundred years. As the story progresses a new direction is hypothesized, a few surprises come along, and she may find that saving the world may come with a price she is not willing to pay. Sterling Tomas twists the reader in knots with all the Really, Fates moments in Destined to Rise.
I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
I loved this story, another amazing story from an amazing shared world. Evie is a scientific genius, but can get too focused on her work, forgetting the world around her. She is working on helping the vampire problem when one by one she meets her mates. I loved how Evie spoke to her mates, she was hilarious and clearly has no filter. The guys were all different but where established as friends prior to meeting Evie. There is a great storyline along with the mates/guys. I really couldn't put this book down until I finished. Although this is a shared world, this book is a standalone.
