Beyond the Core

Rate this book
Owen Greene is a 20-year old who indulges in childish faerie tales and folklore. He's also been graced with mental powers, but has been forced to hide them out of fear for being caught by the governing Legion.

His life takes a sudden turn when the threat of his enemy comes too close to home. Owen flees with a family friend and a newly formed companion who is nothing short of sarcastic and rude. Time spent together journeying through the wilds of his home country brings them close together as Owen lands himself on the Legion's wanted list.

With his enemy on his heels, it's fight or flight for Owen, and after experiencing cutthroat clans and hearing a strange voice call out to him, he may have taken on more than he can carry.

Beware.

If you’re an Astran, an old organization known as the Legion is keeping an eye on you.

Beyond the Core by K.R. Cunningham is Book 1 of The Starborn Series. This adventurous, LGBTQ+ fantasy surrounds the life of Owen, who is swept from a peaceful life in the village to journeying through perilous encounters. But while he meets new faces, taps into his newfound abilities, someone is heavily on his tracks.

Owen's journey sometimes felt like a step forward and two steps back. The Legion is just that aggressive in their search, and to be fair, sometimes Owen is too trusting of others. With new companions and revelations brought to light, our MC is confronted to act beyond he expected when he left his village; one of them includes knowing more about his past.

Being an Astran sucks.

I enjoy fantasy books that have more than one POV; having open windows allows me to explore more of the world as a reader. Cunningham did an exceptional job in showing the hunter and the one being chased. For example, through Elian’s POV, we see how the Legion works and what they do to Astrans, who reach thirteen years of age. Under a ritual call, the cleansing all marked Astrans must undergo this dark procedure. The abilities Astrans wield are unveiled page by page; you can't help but feel for them as those who are marked are under constant watch.

On Characters

Owen is naive but not to his own fault. He has a good nature and having been protected from the Legion, he doesn't handle killings very well, be it from an animal or person. Though he is selfless and caring of others, he's also biased as he can be hard on people who stuck his neck out for him yet somehow give Colt the pass to remain his imperfect self.
Colt is my favorite as he is the most cautious and keeps a sense of secrecy around him, especially with Owen describing his scent as citrusy. As a member of Owen’s group, he goes by his own tune, always showing a hard exterior but sometimes a soft spot that Owen notices.

Favorite Quote

"Everything is connected," he said. "Nothing is closed."

- Amias to Owen

A solid five stars!

★★★★★

I really enjoyed the returning of characters and seeing some villains get a well-deserved serve of their own medicine. Hopefully, we get to see Lou fall into that category in Cunningham's future work. The dude just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't care whose team Rhielle is; I just could not dislike her at all!
Beyond the Core has a splice of life feel, with colorful characters in a world and with slow-burning romance (as much as I would love to talk about that, I simply cannot give spoilers). Most of the questions I was left with were answered towards the end, giving rise to bigger predicaments.

This brings further anticipation for the second book!

a solid fantasy novel

I read this book through Kindle Unlimited. I am not usually a fan of Fantasy novels but I was drawn into the story by the excellent world building and believable characterisation. Owen is a sweet yet strong character who pulls the reader into the adventure and makes you want to carry on reading. The balance of tension and exposition is spot on.

This book is well written and well edited and presented. I enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed this dynamic, fast-paced, and beautifully written adult fantasy.

I tore through "Beyond the Core" in one sitting, and I'm diving into the sequel now! Cunningham is clearly a very gifted writer. For a debut of this ambition and scope, the writing is exceptionally strong, with some beautifully lyrical lines that stood out in my mind as well as witty, humorous dialogue.

I really enjoyed the characters. Colt, with his humor and loyalty, was a favorite, as well as Glinda.

The worldbuilding is exceptionally strong, and I'm looking forward to learning more about the fascinating universe in book 2!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Wow wow wow! This book was so much more than I ever expected! A true epic fantasy, this world has so much depth I was reminded of works by R.A. Salvatore and Robert Jordan.

I loved the magic system, the history and lore of the world, and the characters. This book really hits on everything. The politics of the Legion, the religious aspects, fantasy creatures, its got bands of outlaws hiding in forests, and creepy caves/tunnels. All through this you've got a core (no pun intended) group of characters whose only real bond is Owen. (While Owen is not the reason for all the characters initially joining, he is the reason they stay)

There is a fantastic slow burn build up of relationships between them, earning trust and friendship as they survive the various challenges they face. Nothing is easy for these characters, which I loved.

I felt such a strong empathy for them that everytime they were in danger I could feel my own heart racing, and everytime they pulled through I had the same sense of celebration. I could feel the weariness and exhaustion of travelling through forests and marsh in cold wet weather, and the homesick ache from thoughts of life before the adventure. It's been years since another books has made me feel so realistically the emotions of it's characters

This is a fantastic escape read, it will transport you far away from our world and will keep you firmly in on the road with Owen and his crew. I am already planning to re-read this in the fall when I can have my own physical copy and a hot cup of tea on a rainy day. I cant wait for the next book to see what happens next!

I don’t usually dive into this genre, but I’m glad I did. The world building in this book is incredible. I’d go to Starbucks to read it and completely lose myself in this world Cunningham has created. The details in her writing made me feel as if I was there. I could close my eyes and see Owen slicing his knife through the belly of a freshly caught trout.

One thing that stood out to me is that even though this is part of a series, it’s strong enough to stand on its own. It also doesn’t have a cheaply written ending that’s meant to bring you back, instead you trust how great the book has been, which will bring me back for book 2.

I try not to give too many details when writing a review, especially in this genre because this is a book that is meant to be experienced with fresh eyes and a fresh heart. So jump into this book and allow K.R. Cunningham to have control over a few evenings of your life and take you on a journey. I promise at the end of it you’ll be ready to book a return trip.

I picked up Beyond the Core, not knowing what to expect and was delighted from the get go! As cute as a honey roll, Owen Greene is a sweet, approachable character who is forced to leave his cozy nest and set out on an adventure, seeking a truth, freedom and self-exploration.
K.R. Cunningham recreates a lush world with beautiful visuals at gentle pace. As tensions build, I've found myself hooked by the narrative and loving her characters.
This unique fantasy carves out the time to explore creatures, ancient lore, build relationships, and a slow burn. First book of the series, Beyond the Core is a breath of fresh air.

This high fantasy is just the way I like them—marathon pace, getting close to the characters, and exploring the vast world around them. Owen is a fascinating main character who reminds me of a hobbit—kind, short, and lovable. And the subtle romance was very well written. Overall, there was a grasping narrative, a lot of terrain covered, a unique magic system to explore, and an array of personalities. All I can ask for in an epic read.

Yes, it is said that she had a child, or more, before she was entombed," Amias said. "Her pure bloodline could very well be alive today, those the Legion call Starborn."

Brief plot summary:
🐟Owen loves Emberton. He embraces the peace of the nature, he grew to be very fond of his little home and he fits right in with the kind people of the place, especially with Milo, the fisherman that hired Owen and became somewhat of a fatherly figure to him and Hale, Owen's soon-to-be-married best friend. At least, he seems to fit in.
🐟The truth is that Owen hides a great secret: he is an Astran, one of the folks that can channel magical powers and are said to be descendants of the only human gifted by the goddess Yuna with such powers. Astrans used their powers for destruction and chaos, turning Yuna's gift of light into sheer darkness. In order to fix her mistake, the goddess created her own army, the Legion, consisting of people that could Wield a Core, a device that could absorb and use the power of one or more Astrans. Ever since then, Wielders have been searching for Astrans, marking them and Cleansing them, weeding them out and stealing back the power that rightfully belongs to Yuna.
🐟So Owen is an Astran. And not only that. He is an unmarked Astran, meaning that he is off radar for now. But when Amias, Owen's uncle and the person who raised him after his mother died, and Colt, a complete stranger, come knocking at his front door, his peaceful life is about to be completely shaken up. Owen's only chance of eluding the Wielders is to leave his loved Emberton, joining Amias and Colt on their way to Avathon, a place where the Core that lightens up when it senses Astrans is not available just yet.
🐟But the road is long and full of perils and there are whispering shadows looming in the dark. But are these shadows real or just in Owen's head, born as a result of his awakening powers? Are the whispers willing to help or they are meant to drive him insane? How will Owen find the answers when Wielders are on their tail? What secrets does Amias hide and how do they relate to Owen's real identity? What does being "Starborn" truly mean? What are Colt's intentions and where does he fit in Amias and Owen's story? How can being almost killed by a band of bandits become a good thing? Will our travellers, at last, reach Avathon?

"Beyond the core" answers all these questions and many many more. It is a great fantasy novel which bears similarities to Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and Jordan's "Wheel of Time", so I highly recommend it to fans of the genre.

Highlights
🗡️The mysterious and dramatic beggining. The method chosen by the author for introducing Elian was brilliant and very informative. We got to know about the Wielders, about what a Core means, about the Cleansing and its possible outcomes, about Anna and her connection with Eli. Also, we were given an insight into a Wielder's feelings, making them seem more human, more relatable.
🗡️Owen's little slice of life. The descriptions, the emotions, the friendships, the celebration, everything was really well written. I have grown quickly to be really invested in the story and to really feel my heart ignited by Emberton's beauty. The sorrow he had felt when he chose to leave the home he held so dear, I felt it too. That is a clear sign of how good a book is.

But then again, he had heard it said many times that coming of age brought with it many changes, some good and some bad. He was losing his home and his best friend on the same day.

🗡️Amias. Even though he left Owen behind multiple times, he still was his protector and saviour. He was the father figure that pushed Owen forward, keeping him safe. His wit, spirit and knowledge of the world made him a great leader and an even greater teacher. I never once felt the need to judge or criticize him, even if I've suspected him of several things before they were revealed by the unfolding of the plot. People make bad things for the greater good all the time. He was just a man. A man who, despite everything he had done, cared very much about Owen. And that is all that matters.
🗡️Colt. Oh, man. Colt was the spice of the story, wasn't he? At first, I didn't know what to make of him. A part of me expected him to double cross Amias at any time. But Owen's aura reading turned my mind around and made me see him for what he really was: a big softie, with a tough exterior. His sarcastic comments were absolutely delicious, his fighting skills worthy of swooning over, but the cherry on the top was his unfaltering loyalty. Thanks to him, Owen didn't feel alone anymore. In the middle of a chase, surrounded by enemies and shadows, Owen found his little light. He found someone to share the burden with. And that made me really really happy!!

"Haven't had a best friend in a long time, and I'm good at keeping secrets. Especially ones that could land us in trouble."

🗡️Brom and Glinda. These characters bring so much to the story! Their strenght and courage are admirable, but even more so is their ability to remain honest and kind in the middle of a thief gang. Moreover, their constant bickering was definitely pointing towards a possible evolution of their relationship. Maybe in the second book? *hoping*
🗡️The less heroic stuff. I've read plenty of fantasy books and almost all of the focus solely on the heroic things. And that is allright, nothing wrong with that. BUT. This book shows the readers that special people with great powers also need to pee. They get sick when they sleep in the cold, their throats can get sore, they can have a fever, they stink most of the time. This is the life of a traveler. This is so real and so relatable, so refreshing! I will forever thank K. R. Cunningham for establishing some realistic standards for us, the not so special folks.
🗡️The world-building, the magic, Elian an Rhielle, the dialogue, the plot twists, the ancient lore, the book about creatures, the diary entries, the dual POV. Really good. All of it.

Drawbacks
🗡️I don't usually leave this section empty, but I genuinly don't have anything bad to say about this book. BUT if I were to say something regarding my own preferences, this would be that I didn't feel the danger as much as I would have liked. I mean... I knew right from the start that Elias is not such a bad guy, so I wasn't as terrified for Owen as I should have been. Also, knowing that our Astran is a special one (*trying hard not to give any spoilers*), I wasn't afraid for him getting through the Cleansing. As a fantasy, horror and thriller lover, that's all that would have completed my thirst for darkness: a more terrifying enemy.
But I can't complain too much, as there were monsters, ferals and murderers all over the book. And maybe we'll get some gods as villains in the next book.🌻

"Tell me, Owen. Do you believe in fate?"
"Only if it works in my favor."

All in all, this book exceeded my expectations. K. R. Cunningham did a fantastic job writing such a promising first novel of a trilogy! And the ending is just perfect for keeping the readers on the edge of their seats, counting days until the sequel! Fantasy loving friends, you should definitely give it a try!

"Everything is connected, " he said. "Nothing is closed. All life in our world can be sensed - the trees, rivers, animals, humans. Its energy spirals to the edges of the universe. There are some who move in tune with it. They can feel it in ways that gibe meaning and in ways that can make them feel physically ill. They can use it to detect hatred or love in others, and there are some who are able to use it more powerfully."

*mention: I received this as a free ARC and I have written here my honest and unbiased opinion*

Beyond the Core, the first book of The Starborn Trilogy, is a fantasy adventure about a young man named Owen Greene. Owen's pleasant life in a seaside village becomes very complicated when his old mentor Amias arrives unexpectedly and urges Owen to flee with him to the safety of a neighbouring country. Owen, it seems, is Astran; he's descended from the gods of an earlier age and has inherited certain powers. The government of Milarc, the Legion, is pursuing Amias for undisclosed crimes, but Owen is at risk as well.

Amias and Owen, accompanied by the rough and ready Colt, who has undertaken to protect them, journey on foot for days and days, through forest and field. The Legion has sent a Core Wielder named Elian to capture Amias and Owen. A Core has extraordinary power as a weapon, and the power of these Cores is replenished by the powers innate in Astrans.

The day-to-day travails of these three are described in considerable detail. But the logistics confused me despite the handy map at the front of the book. While it can take them three days to walk from A to B, the villain Elian who is on horseback, can catch up with them in a morning's ride.

I quite took to Owen at the beginning, but gradually grew disenchanted. He's no tough guy and.doesn't cope well with sleeping rough, being hungry or cold, and he's terrified of being left alone. But he has the “power” of an Astran which he must learn to harness. Of all the characters, it was Colt who emerged as the most attractive and interesting, being funny, resourceful and loyal.

The trio faces numerous perils, attacks from feral creatures and humans, but generally survives. Some of these action scenes are splendidly written, and the author deserves special praise for her brilliant finale. Owen's world, which feels a lot like the U.K. is partly medieval and partly futuristic high tech, but when you're inventing a world, as K.R. Cunningham has done so impressively, anything goes.

However, although she thanks beta readers and her editor, there are several instances of awkward language. One young woman “put her hand on her chest and battered her eyes” and at one point Owen falls out of a boat into a fast river, and “his mind jumbled as he flowed down the river.” People don't generally “delve” into a forest, and the characters do “huff” a great deal.

Overall, at 420 pages, Beyond the Core is rather longer than it needed to be to tell Owen's story. And as there's more to come, there is not a complete resolution. But young readers who are in search of action and adventure and who are less picky about language, will enjoy the book.

Bought the book for my mom for a birthday present. When I tell you she loved it!!! Would be an understate. My mom loves the character's in the story. Has not been a day that she hasn't entertained me at the kitchen table over breakfast talking about how much she loves the book. The fight scenes in the book and adventure she loves. She loves all the characters! Owen and Colt are like her main character's of the book she loves. Often she tells me that this could be a movie! She looks forward to the sequel. I mean I loved hearing over coffee what was next. A fantasy definitely worth reading! With character's you love and hate.

This is an action filled, epic fantasy.

This book has very interesting take on the fantasy world. Magic system is complex which I love. I also loved the history part of this world. There is a downloadable sheet for that in authors website also character cards! Author really thought about every aspect of this world for sure.

Character relationships were a little too much slow for me so I had to down a star. Also pace starts slow but picks up towards the end. I really enjoyed the story and Owen's growth as a person and as a powerful Astran. Kind of reminded me of Shadow&Bone series.

2.5 stars. This is a fantasy adventure novel, with interesting, well-drawn characters and many thrilling scenes. I enjoyed it, but I think it needs cutting and polishing, especially at the beginning. Here are some of my concerns:
(1) The gripping prologue is told from the viewpoint of a character other than the protagonist, and I kept wondering when that character would appear. Perhaps the scene would work better as a flashback.
(2) Descriptions of the different gods and the Astrans come a third of the way through the book. I would have liked to have them earlier.
(3) Some actions are described minutely even though they don’t advance plot or characterization. For example, a passage like “Owen got to his feet and cleared away his bowl. He walked to his bedroom long enough to pluck his journal from his dresser and then came outside into cooler air. The afternoon was still bright, the air warm enough for a walk” could be summarized as “Owen grabbed his journal and stepped outside to take a walk.”
(4)The protagonist’s thoughts are repetitive. I get that Owen is a sensitive, reflective guy, and he has a lot of past to think about and miss, but some of his introspection could be cut.

A few writing nits: 1) Phrases with obscure (at least to me) meanings—“tirade of hiding in plain sight”; “throes of his imagination”; “walking with a gait”. 2) Typos (e.g., “he’s” instead of “he”). 3) Characters invariably “smirking,” instead of just “smiling.”

Three things I especially liked:
(1) The feisty, hard-to-read Colt, who brought a lot of energy to the story. Kind of a Han Solo type.
(2) The complicated main antagonist, with whom we are allowed to feel some sympathy. The plot is a little like that in “Les Miserables.”
(3) The central theme of finding/keeping/suppressing power.

If you like fantasy stories with a diversity of characters, magical abilities, slow burn, stories that are not too high paced and at the same time slowly building up to the next books in the series, go and take a look at beyond the core.

The story was okay, with mostly lots of traveling, but with some more exciting parts and fighting scenes too. You get some more insights in the background of everything, but not in an info-dumping kind of way. Lots of things still leave room for speculation. But after a while the whole cat and mouse chase became somewhat boring, always ending in the same way (I really don't understand how that could happen, because it's not like the characters are that skilled, especially against a so called professional enemy, but hey, otherwise the story would be over too soon I guess).

For the characters, it's pretty much impossible to not like Owen (soft, a bit naive, poetic) and Colt (seemingly bad guy who uses jest as a defence mechanism, but has soft spots too once you get to know him better). I also liked the dynamic between the two of them and how it evolved. It was also nice to get the POV of both a Wielder and an Astran, to get both sides of the story.

So overall it was a nice read in between other books, but it wasn't compelling enough for me to immediately want to read the second book. Maybe I'll still give book two a chance later, or not, I don't know yet. If there had been less of the cat and mouse chase and more progress in the story itself (it mostly felt like it was just building up a little, waiting for book 2 to kick-start the rest of the story), I would be much more inclined to want to know how the story continues in book 2.

The world-building in this first installment is simply incredible. The narrative flows so smoothly and is rich in description, which allows you easily to imagine the setting.

Besides that the story delivers amazing journey across magical lands filled with various beasts and curious creatures.

The characters are intriguing and our MC is one you're totally looking forward to see a development and growth.

Let's go see what second book will offer!

Only the start of the adventure
With the Starborn Series Ms. Cunningham gives us an adventure story within a fantasy world but know up front, this is NOT a stand-alone book.
The world building within this series is very good and the language used has allowed me to lose myself in this environment she has created, it is very detailed, at times, unnecessarily so. There are times that it’s a little slow but as Owen, Amias and Colt’s journey progresses the action heats up and it’s like the author hits her stride and everything flows more freely.
It is an intriguing read if you are a fantasy lover as this adventure turns into a dangerous chase across a continent with magical people, well fleshed out characters and beasts from the depths of the authors imagination.
It has of course left me waiting to start Book 2 to see what happens next.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

This has a lovely setting with an imaginative system for explaining magic in the world. I like the small view of the world setting that gives readers the chance to get to know the character and the world as the focus widens.

The language is descriptive and lovely. The characters feel vibrant. They have real flaws and strengths, interests and personalities.

I felt like there was too much information shared, from world info to character backstories.

There are real stakes for the characters in this book. From the overarching threat the world presents to the very real and relatable complications of daily life.

Overall a compelling read!

I enjoyed this book.

Characters are the reason I fall in love with stories, and this one does well in that regard. Owen may be the main protagonist, but Colt was the highlight for me. His brash nature and crude speaking, combined with his competence at violence and survival, are endearing (as weird as that might sound). The others have a familiar feel to them, but have enough originality not to be boring.

The history of the world, particularly the lore behind Astrans, was fun to get into.

I enjoyed Katie's writing style. Descriptive, yet simple. She didn't try to do too much with her prose, which helped to keep the story moving.
