Tempers are about to flare and sparks are about to fly…
Tucker Hayes is holding a grudge. After being unexpectedly traded from his beloved professional hockey team in San Antonio, he’s still trying to mesh with his new teammates in Tampa. It’s going fine, but that’s just it… fine.
Lacy Hawkins is holding a grudge of her own. She blames the man who left her alone five years ago and caused her dreams to die a slow and painful death. Now it takes all her energy everyday just to stay afloat.
When their paths unexpectedly cross again, drinks are thrown and anger becomes the norm. But Tucker and Lacy have to find a way to stop fanning the flames if they want to come out unscathed.
Because when you’re under fire, the innocent can get burned…
Overall, a disappointing read and I don't recommend unless this is your cuppa tea....
SPOILERS!
What I liked:
- Hero's relationship with the kids. He was a good Dad-in-training in the beginning and he went all-in once he found out he had a kid which I liked. - The kids (MCs daughter & heroine's BFF’s kid) were just adorable. - The heroine’s BFF who was a straight up shooter and gave good advice.
What I didn’t like:
- The BFF for taking advantage & not having the decency to remove herself from the equation once Hero came into the picture. She was a character that accepted every material & monetary gift Hero gave her as if it was her right.
- Lack of chemistry between the 2 MCs. It took a very long time (about 96% ) before they even kissed for Pete's sake and I don't even remember any sparks or awareness between them until the end!
- Hero constantly referring heroine as his “Baby Momma”. Puh-leese!
- While I understood heroine’s ambivalence and obstinate behavior based on past family abandonment, it still became tiresome when she was behaving like this for majority of the story – especially as it was pointed out to her over & over again how she was being unfair to Hero and blaming him for her own issues. At some point, it needed character growth and we don't get it from either MC.
- The heroine’s need for the BFF & her kid to remain a family unit. While on one hand I understood that heroine & the BFF became each other’s support system & family unit before Hero came into the picture because of desperation & need, afterwards however it felt like co-dependence and unhealthy as if Hero not only gained a child & his Baby Momma to support, but her BFF & her kid as well. LOL.
- Hero bought a house for the 3 of them to live in and be a family, and moved the heroine's BFF & her kid into his pool house but they were always underfoot and it took away of any real feelings/relationship happening between the MCs.
-Hero suddenly had more mouths to feed & support. Never mind the ick factor with how people (press/media) perceived them as if Hero had 2 separate baby mommas...
- It was referred many times that the kids, because they are the same age (3 yrs old) and lived together with their moms in the same apartment, were raised like they were brother & sister and thought of themselves as twins, so the 3 adults (Hero, heroine & BFF) considered them as "their" children.
- Hero referencing the BFF’s kid as his own and the BFF & heroine having no problem with it. As a Mom myself, that didn’t sit well with me as the 3 adults were confusing the poor kid, especially as the kid called him Daddy too.
- Hero not remembering heroine. They had a ONS 4 yrs prior and for over 70-80% or so, he didn’t remember her or their ONS. He had brief moments through the story where he had a slight memory but it was quickly forgotten. It took way too long for him to recall it and when he finally did, it was a complete let down because up until then I thought the reason he couldn’t remember was because he had a head injury/amnesia or a drunken night. So to learn that neither was the case and it was “the best sex of his life” and that he left her the next day and “locked the memory of her away”. Well…that told me all I needed about this “romance”.
The woman of my dreams, the one I refused to remember because there was no point, she’s here. And she’s the mother of my child.
- Hero’s change in personality at around the 75% from a nice guy to an asshole. He started being an upstanding guy who didn't have the Manho vibe and a family guy, then towards the end became the Party Boy who wanted to have fun with his friends & not think about safety when kids were around.
- Hero never thought or brought up marriage to heroine at all. Normally tropes like this, I would expect the Hero once he found out he had a kid with heroine to want to marry heroine ASAP and become a family. With this one, even when marriage was brought up briefly as a joke by one of the kids, he panicked and then laughed it off and ignored it - never to be brought up again.
- At 98%, they have their first sex scene. One moment they state they want to “get to know” each other because even though they’ve been living together for a few weeks, they still at that point are strangers but in the next paragraph they are exchanging ILYs after having sex. Hmm…what happened to the in-between? When exactly did they fall in love with each other because up at that point, they were just sort of acting as friends or co-parenting. There were no in-depth conversations or anything to tell me that they even liked one another, much less call it love. And at the heart, that is what this was. A story with a lot of nonsense and no love story.
- The Ending. The biggest let down I have ever read. It was more of a HFN with no wedding and not even a proposal. Just the two of them now calling each other Boyfriend & Girlfriend and the status-Q remaining of the 3 adults raising the kids together....
Safety: - Safe. No OM/OW drama. - No sex scenes with OP. - It was referenced that Hero slept around before & after he first met heroine, but celibate after reuniting with her in the present time. No history on heroine. - Disappointing Ending with a 6 month Epilogue living together as BF/GF.
Tucker has recently been traded from his San Antonio team to Tampa, Florida. His whole life and support circle is back in San Antonio so it’s been a tough transition for him to find his place here. It takes time to build trust with a new team and even after nearly six months he has to work hard on that every day.
Part of being part of the team is socializing outside of game time with them, even when he doesn’t really feel like it. Some of these guys are all about getting laid and finding an interested partner to share their night with. Tucker isn’t as focused on that but he hasn’t been a saint either. He is out one night with the boys when he spots a gorgeous bartender that captures his attention straight away. First off she is tall, he loves that, but mostly he loves how carefree and friendly she is. Until she meets his eyes.
Lacy cannot believe that Tucker Hayes is in her bar, well the one she works at. Of all the places he could have gone to he comes into her place of work. He is all smooth and flirty but seems to have no freaking idea about who she is and the history they have together. This makes her even more mad, so much so that she ends up throwing a drink in his face and then realizes that this may just get her fired. Shit, what has she done?
Tucker is initially confused, Lacy does look kind of familiar but he cannot place her yet. It’s obvious she has major beef with him and he needs to get to the bottom of it. If he has done something he wants to know so he can make amends, he would never intentionally hurt anyone. Upon returning to the bar, once things have had time to settle a bit, Lacy can’t hold back any longer and lets him know why her reaction to him was so strong, filled with resentment and anger.
Tucker is completely floored with Lacy’s revelations and is determined to make amends, this girl has had a tough time the last five years and it ends now. From here on out both of their lives will change and he wouldn’t want it any other way.
It’s been a while since I read a sports themed novel and this story definitely delivered :)
When Tucker shows up at the bar where Lacy works these two have a clear misunderstanding but once it’s put right could they be each other’s perfect match?
The side characters in this book are just as good and important. I loved every since one.
This was so good. I couldn’t put it down.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Professional hockey player Tucker Hayes isn’t thrilled when he is traded to Tampa and his reception there by a certain waitress is surprising since he doesn’t seem to remember who she is. Lacy Hawkins is reminded of Tucker everyday since their one night stand over three years ago.
“You left and you never came back.” A small sob bursts out of her and my heart cracks open…” “I lean down, pressing my forehead to hers, dropping the hanger and clasping her face in both my hands. “But I’m here now. And I’m not going anywhere.”
I loved this sweet and swoony sports romance. Tucker gets his second chance to make things right and he goes all in to step up and be the best kind of man he can be. -5 Stars-
I was excited for a new hockey series and I couldn’t wait to dive into Under Fire ( Florida Glaze Hockey #1) by M.E. Carter and all I’m going to say is, Tucker Hayes and Lacy Hawkins journey is a must read for all sports romance lovers. Tucker has just been traded to Florida, he misses his old life and his old team in San Antonio and he is struggling to settle so he decides he needs to get out and about and that’s when he comes across Lacy. From the moment their eyes meet sparks fly or should I say drinks fly. When he finally gets Lacy to open up and tell him what he has done he is shocked and determined to make amends. Lacy never thought she would see Tucker again and she is shocked when he walks into the bar where she works and honestly she is not happy to see him especially as he could take everything she loves away from her. It’s going to take a lot of persuasion and grovelling for Lacy to trust Tucker again so will this be their time……. I loved everything about this book, I’m excited for the rest of the series and I highly recommend this beautifully written journey. The characters are wonderful, the banter is witty and the chemistry is hot and if this book is anything to go by Ms Carter will certainly have a hit series on her hands.
5 Star review Under Fire (Florida Glaze Hockey #1) by M.E.Carter I was so excited when I heard that M.E. Carter had a new series releasing and learning that it was a hockey one just added to it. The last thing Tucker Hayes expected was to be traded and find himself living and playing in Tampa, Florida. He misses his life in San Antonio and is having a hard time settling. When he finds himself crossing paths with Lacy Hawkins again the sparks fly and not in a good way. Tucker doesn't remember Lacy or the history they share and that infuriates her. When he learns what happened he is shocked and determined to make it up to her. However there is a fine line between love and hate and these two are balancing it. I fell hard and fast for these characters, particularly Tucker who has a heart of gold and is prepared to do what ever he can to make things right. I was really cheering for them to get their happily ever after. There was witty banter, angst, passion and wonderful characters throughout this story and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Carter has in store for this series.
A new series by one of my one-click authors?? YES PLEASE!!! M.E. Carter never fails to give me books that keep me wanting more and more. Lacy is one of my most favorite characters that Ms Carter has ever written. Lacy’s story is heartbreaking and relatable. I love watching her edges soften and become more and more drawn to Tucker. And the more she fights it….well, you should totally read it to find out. Perfect read for a cozy afternoon by the fire or at the pool.
This trope is one of my favorite!!!! I loved this book so much! Tucker and lacy are amazing! And the family dynamic was wonderful! Highly recommend <3 M.E carter can do no wrong!
Wow, M.E. Carter went for all the feels with this book! Under Fire is a fantastic way to launch a series! It’s a heartwarming, tear-jerker slow burn romance. M.E.‘s books are always bursting with genuine emotion, warmth, and so much heart! Under Fire exceeded my expectations. If you haven’t read the prequel, Playing With Fire, I highly recommend it. It’s a quick novelette about how Tucker and Lacy first met. It’s funny and super hot!
After a phenomenal one night stand years ago, a chance encounter crumbles his newly established life. Tucker never thought he would see the woman of his dreams again. It seems fate wasn’t quite finished with Lacy and Tucker. Not one to waste the opportunity of a lifetime, Tucker jumps at the chance to win Lacy back. 5 years ago, one night with a hot hockey player set Lacy’s world spinning. Now that he’s been traded to her home team, can her old wounds heal so she can build a future?
“He’s not just deep inside my body. He’s deep inside my heart. My soul.”
Under Fire grabbed me in the first chapter and never let go. Lacy comes out strong with her fierce, survivor energy and she blossoms throughout the book. Her character arc is beautifully developed as she works through childhood issues and begins breaking down her trust walls. Lacy just learned the man she has hated for 5 years is back in town…possibly for good!
Tucker is the cinnamon roll hockey player we all need. M.E. Carter nailed it when she came up with The Florida Glaze! There could not be a more apropos name for a series about this group of hot hockey book boyfriends. I mean, come on! A word indicative of heat & sweet is perfect to associate with the hottest hockey hero, especially Tucker Hayes! I love all of M.E.’s characters in Under Fire; his teammates are outrageously funny and totally lovable. As much as I enjoyed Tucker & Lacy, Holly and Ellie nearly stole the show for me!

Lacy Hawkins and Tucker Hayes met each other several years ago, but Tucker has forgotten her. Lacy has never forgotten him, and has stored up a lot of anger in the interim. Tucker wants to understand why, so he pursues her to ask questions, and is floored when he hears her answers. Lacy is strong and has overcome a lot to get where she is today. Tucker realizes this, and does what he can to smooth things out for her.
These two make a few missteps, but they eventually get where they need to be. The story of how they go from anger to happiness is told beautifully in this book. There are some sad parts, and a few bad choices made, but the overall feeling that readers will get from this book, is joy. Lacey and her best friend, Ellie, have created a family that supports and helps each other in all the best ways. Tucker and his professional hockey team have also created a family of sorts. There are some characters who add levity and others who bring wisdom to the table, but overall they provide an overall sense of joy to this book.
I had a smile on my face for multiple parts of this book, and I laughed out loud for other parts. Tucker has the most amazing mother, and she raised a really good son! I loved these protagonists and the supporting characters in this story! It was a fun and heartwarming story that will make readers happy.
I knew that M.E. Carter could write sports romance, Texas Mutiny and The Hart Series proved that. But she has blown me away with Under with Fire! Tucker is a swoon worthy character, even if he’s a little bit flawed. Lacy is an all-out champion of a woman taking control of her life and winning. Together the sparks fly with these two!
Although their meet-cute didn’t happen in this book, their reunion was quite entertaining! As I said, Tucker with his flaws, doesn’t remember Lacy. But Lacy remembers him! The story of how these two work towards a relationship is heart warming with some laughs. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next in the series.
Carter is definitely one of my go to authors when I’m looking for something fun to read. This hockey series might just become one of my favorites. Tucker’s story was one for the books and I have to say, surprised me quite a bit, but also didn’t if that makes sense to those who have read it. I expected this story to go one way but unsurprisingly it went the complete opposite and my heart couldn’t be happier.
I know who I want to see in the next installment so I’ll be waiting on pins and needles to see if that wish comes true.
M.E. Carter has started a new hockey series with Under Fire, this is Tucker’s story. Under Fire is a second chance secret baby story where Tucker and Lacy meet back up years after their one night stand. This one is so prefect! There is so much angst and venom in the beginning which ends as the perfect love story. Tucker is the sweetest and he melts Lacy’s cold heart. I loved these two, and the side characters are just as endearing. From best friends to future mother in laws the women of this book are strong, independent, and loving. And Sutton and Kody are just adorable!
I mean... have you seen Tucker on the cover?!? 🔥🔥🔥 His heart is just as desirable as his abs! I love the snark and sassy banter between the moms that is being passed on by the "twins;" you can't beat the comedy with the kids' interactions. ME Carter has such a great foundation for an awesome Hockey club to build her stories on and I can not wait for the next one!!
I always love a hockey surprise pregnancy romance. It’s one of my fave ones to read and this story was beyond enjoyable. I loved that most of the story was them being a family and learning how to do that. It made it more realistic. It’s funny, sweet. Emotional and while not overly steam my I did enjoy what steam there was. I’m definitely into this series.
#underfire is the all new hockey series by @authormecarter
Tucker is at a great point in his hockey career. Living up the life he’s always wanted. Until he’s traded to Florida. Now having to connect with a new team, he tries to bond when he can, which ends up with him at a restaurant in a hotel. Just wanting a drink, he’s surprised by the attitude of the bartender, he’s trying his award winning smile which only gets him in a deeper hole and a drink thrown in his face. He senses some familiarity with there, but just can’t place her..yet. But when he realized who she is, all memories come flooding back. Can he get on this woman’s good side, or has too much time passed and the damage can’t be reversed?
Lacy had to set aside her dreams when she got an unexpected surprise after an unforgettable night with a hockey player. She’s struggling but working hard to provide for the makeshift family she’s built with her best friend. Until the man in question walks back into her life unexpectedly. She’s got walls built around her heart to prevent any more disappointments that can come her way. But once she tells Tucker just what he’s missed, she gets an even bigger surprise. The man has stepped up in every way imaginable and providing her with a comfort she only dreamed of. Can this all work out for her little family? Or is it easier to keep things separate so her hopes don’t get crushed again?
I loved this book! M. E. Has become a one click author for me. Now with a hockey series, I can’t look away. These character were perfect. I loved that even though Lacy was pissed at Tucker, she laid everything out on the line early on in being back in each other’s lives, there was no hiding Sutton or withholding her from her father. Tucker stepped up in every way a single mother would want. The way he cared about the little family they built was wonderful. I would absolutely recommend this book as well as any other by this author. Can’t wait to continue the series!!
Under Fire is the first book in M.E. Carter’s new Florida Glaze series and it starts with Tucker Hayes and Lacy Hawkins. To get the most from this story I advise you to read the prequel Playing With Fire so you find out what actually happened the fateful night they first meet. This is an entertaining, sexy enemies to lovers sports romance.
If you are a fan of this author’s Hart series then you will already know the force of nature and larger than life character Tucker Hayes. When he got the unexpected news that he had been traded by his ice hockey team to Tampa, he wasn’t happy at having to leave all his friends behind in San Antonio. What we didn’t know at the time was he had had a very interesting one-night stand in Tampa five years before!
Tucker has now been in Tampa for six months and is making the effort to get to know his new teammates. PreSeason is coming up so they visit a hotel bar to continue the bonding process. What Tucker doesn’t expect is the woman behind the bar to throw a drink over him. He has a faint memory that she is familiar but is so confused at why she is so antagonistic towards him. He has no idea what he has done and is surprised when she knows his name.
Lacy blames Tucker for everything that has happened to her since that night and she has certainly been through a lot. She never expected to ever see him again and hates that she is still attracted to him. She has spent years unable to forget about him and now is hurt because he has forgotten about her. She is worried about what she is going to do now he is back in town because she is hiding a huge secret from him.
When she drops the bomb, he is shocked and can’t believe the news but is determined to fix and rectify everything. There is no denying the chemistry between them is still there but can they find the connection again. Both are angry over the events that have led to where they are now and he is struggling with the guilty he is feeling. Both their lives are about to change forever.
Lacy has major trust issues which hold her back but it is understandable when we get her backstory. I felt so sorry that Tucker has missed out on so much but loved how he made a real effort getting to know them. He might have been the joker in the pack but underneath he is a sweet and kind guy. He tries so hard and his intentions are good even if his execution isn’t always the best. She has been through so much, some of which is heartbreaking but she has shown amazing strength in adversity.
The secondary characters are fantastic and really bring the fun into what could be a sad story. Ellie is a wonderful best friend and been so supportive to Lacy for the last three years. I love their friendship and how they always figure everything out together. I loved the hope that shone through throughout even though Lacy and Tucker were scared of how things were going to work out. This is a great start to what I feel is going to be another excellent series for this author. I found it so entertaining and constantly had a smile on my face while reading as many of the characters antics really tickled me. Now I can’t wait for the next books about his teammates.

I'm going to start this off by saying that I went into this book blind, and discovered very quickly that it contains a trope I STRONGLY dislike more often than not. The way this went down though, and the speed at which it was resolved, worked out ok for me.
Anyway, I surprised myself in that I really did enjoy this story in spite of that. Tucker is a hockey player that's been recently traded to a new team. He's new in town and struggling to form the same kind of bond with his new teammates that he had with his old team. On a night out intended to work on those relationships, he runs into Lacy at a bar where she works. He knows he recognizes her, but can't place her. Lacy VERY clearly remembers him, and not fondly! Tucker is typically a decent enough guy and can't for the life of him figure out what Lacy harbors so much hatred for him.
I really can't say much else about the story without getting a little spoilery. I really adored Tucker's character. He was so generous and caring - and totally clueless. His willingness to learn and do better though was endearing. His and Lacy's story was sweet as well as entertaining. I wouldn't necessarily go so far as to call this a comedy, but there were plenty of laughs to be found. I really enjoyed several of the side characters as well and hope/assume their stories will be told down the line.
I picked up the prequel Playing With Fire in a random amazon buy and honestly i couldn't wait for more of this story. I was so happy to get into the Florida Glaze Hockey world. I really enjoyed it! Tucker and Lacy's journey pulled me in from the get go! Tucker and Lacey are a great match. I found myself pulling for them from the start. Throughout the book, both characters show growth, which was a plus for me. The secondary characters are integral in the story and almost steal the show at times. These two have a history and as they're reunited, i couldn't wait to see how things would play out. I was so glad that i got to dig into both of their minds. I loved how i felt so much with these two throughout! While a few moments involve the team, almost all of this story plays out off the ice. With Under Fire, Ms.Carter has created a great read! I can't wait to dive back into the Florida Glaze Hockey world!
I haven't read a sports romance in so long and this was the PERFECT book to get back into them! I'm not usually a fan of books with kids in them, but the author did a wonderful job here. This was a slow burn romance, with a little bit of second chance, a dash of single mom and heaps of wonderful banter. Both main characters were good and I also really liked the FMC's BFF, Ellie. She was a no drama best friend who gave the FMC good advice, having her back at times but also calling her out when needed. Under Fire is a great story about "found family" and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book was just so nice! Slow enough to get to know the characters, to let them develop effortlessly, not too long, not too short and just a celebration of what it means to become a family.
Tucker and Lacy spend a fantastic night together and three years later they meet again, but Lacy is not so happy to see him as she couldn't reach him to let him know they were having a baby. The whole story is how Tucker dives into his new role and how they all adjust to their new life.
While this is the kind of story I usually avoid, this was nicely written, smooth and lovely.
What I loved the most about this book was the realness and the niceness of it, it's an unconventional family building but it's a balm for anyone who knows family is the you build with love and not necessarily the one you were given. It's full of love and charming characters.
Under Fire is a quick and sweet read. It is the first in a new Florida Glaze series by M.E. Carter I am a hockey lover at heart, so that I couldn’t pass this one up. While a few moments involve the team, almost all of this story plays out off the ice. Tucker and Lacey are a great match. I found myself pulling for them from the start. Throughout the book, both characters show growth, which was a plus for me. The secondary characters are integral in the story and almost steal the show at times. Carter’s writing is easy to read, has likable characters, and still has an enjoyable plot while predictable. The chemistry between Tucker and Lacy added to their connection and helped move the story along. If you like low angst sweet reads, I recommend reading Under Fire.
Eeekkkk! So i loved Tucker even more after this. He was just amazing in this and jumped into fatherhood feet first. Did he need some pointers, yes. But mannn, swoon. I loved how he was with Sutton and Kody. Like how can you not love him? Lacy and Ellie i applaud these ladies they afe strong and did everything they could to provide for their children. I loved them for it. Their friendship is great. I love how they had each other's back. Holly made this book even better i loved her coming into the story. But lastly the kids stole the whole show or the teammates did too. Which by the way, i need Nick to get a story ASAP. I really enjoyed this book! Definitely made me realize i need to jump in a read me more by this author.
This was such a good story, and the start of what I'm sure will be a great new series. What happens when a one night stand with a lot of chemistry, produces a surprise pregnancy? The kicker or should I say "Slap Shot" is it takes a few years for both of them to become aware of the events that happened after that life altering event. Read this book to find out how life turns out for everyone involved.
I really enjoyed this book and won't be my last by this author. It's about Lacy the independent, stubborn, single mom of a 3 year old; and Tucker the hot shot hockey player and baby daddy even though he doesn't know it yet. Tucker might have been the cocky hockey player but he also had the biggest heart which eventually breaks down Lacy's walls. This book made me laugh and was very sweet. I'm already looking forward to book #2 in this hockey series.
This is Tucker and Lacy's story with lots of pro hockey players thrown into the mix along with her daughter and Lacy's best friend and her son. There's a lot of stories being told but I liked the second chance romance and how Tucker stepped up to the plate and treated Lacy and the others with so much compassion. A feel good romance with lots of family and friends and a guy who was often too good to be true. I look forward to reading more books in this series by this new to me author.
Lacy and Tucker had quite the journey to their HEA. I was glad to see Tucker smooth over the first meetup. I really enjoyed how Tucker immediately stepped up and did the right thing over and over. How Lacy let Tucker be apart of her life as he should be. I enjoyed laughing at Tucker and his cluelessness in some aspects of his new life. Lacy and Tuckers HEA was unconventional but it was very nice.
