When I first originally saw the synopsis of this novel, I thought that it would be the like any other dark romance novel. But this one really did surprise me with how it use's its characters to forward the story.
The dubious part of storytelling is needing the reader to like the characters, even the dark/grey characters. Gyeja has done a wonderful job at this, while I think how you characterize depends on how good the translation is. A character like II-hyun is entirely up to a persons perspective on morality and how they view life. Both Ja-Kyung and II-hyun are messed up morally and show characteristics of sociopathy, with Ja-Kyung demonstrating the lack of emotion or recklessness/anger. II-hyun then showing the manipulation and violation of boundaries. They are characters cut from the same cloth and respond abnormally to situations that normal people would recoil at.
Their relationship hinges on the fact that both are capable of killing each other, Ja-Kyung is a assassin and II-hyun is just plain crazy. I can't realistically see them getting with another person besides each other. Their past's and how that effects their present state is something that is only knowledge by each other in the story and their relationship somewhat heals what cuts they were left with in life by others.
The side characters are wonderful and show different aspects of both characters.
This story is very interesting and is a good read if your into analyzing characters and the side chapters are semi-needed add on to the original plot.
— dark and ruthless — money, power, assassination, underworld intrigue — violent & gritty gangster romance — the story is packed with action, blood, and psychological intensity — it's a wild ride, not for the faint of heart. — psychopath seme; obsessive, passionate, and borderline unhinged — competent hitman uke; skilled, wary, and sharply aware of the danger — toxic obsession with surprising tenderness — they spiral into each other via force, manipulation, regret, and mutual fascination—only later does anything resemble care — read if you like dark, intense BL with a thrilling enemies-to-lovers arc drenched in blood and obsession — heads up: contains heavy violence, explicit sexuality (including non-consensual scenes), and psychological manipulation, definitely not a light read
