The questions in this book were curated by the staff at London's Royal Observatory, to address all the most common - and a few uncommon - things that children want to know about space. Planets, moons, exploration and even some really BIG questions such as 'How do Black Holes work', 'Is it worth going to space?' and 'What's going to happen at the end of time?'.
Alice James joined Usborne in 2015, after several years of working in primary schools. She absolutely loves science, and over the years has lived with chimps, spent a month in the rainforest, studied Biology at Oxford University, and grown 200 carnivorous plants (not necessarily in that order). Whilst at Usborne Alice has worked on books on all kinds of science topics, from space to energy to the periodic table.
We all enjoyed this book - It is very dense with info, so we read 1 page-spread a night (we love reading a couple pages of non-fiction with our fiction books each night!). We all learned so much (my husband and I included!). The graphics are interesting and fun, and although it is geared toward older children, both my 5 and 7 year olds were able to understand the majority of the content. Also love that the "Universe Expert" for the book is Dr. Ed Bloomer from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich!
By far the best children's book about space we've read in my opinion. We have read quite a few books about space with our kids, many are either a bit too advanced in their explanations or too simple. We found that this book explains hard to understand topics in a very good way. Also, the way that each chapter ends with a sort of cliff hanger into the next chapter makes it almost impossible to stop reading at bedtime. Don't know if it's a good thing or a bad, but I think I'll be settling for it to be a good thing :)
