This book is a really good start to this new series from author, K. B. Barrett. I am a sucker for cute kids in stories. Ben is no exception. When he did make an appearance, he brought some humor to the story. While kids are entertaining, the real heat came from Branson and Emma.

Yes, the chemistry was there but that first moment when they were together, and Branson brought Emma some sweet release! That was one hot scene. From there the rest of the intimate scenes were very steamy. While, this book is a romance, it also has some intrigue to it as well. To quote Branson..."A man takes care of what's his". I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

(I received an ARC for this book)

My heart was ripped out right away. Which means I was sucked right into this! Branson is trying to do everything in his power to do right by his brother, right by his mom. And it’s not easy for him. But he refuses to let his past determine his future. Especially his brother’s future. If you’ve read Nothing Without You, you’ll know why my heart did a funny thing over the mention of the damage done to his family home. But then my heart kept doing funny things when Emma was shoved into his life. (Thanks Aunt Tracy!) For maybe half a second, it’s easy to assume Branson is a broken man, and grumpy, and rude. He’s anything but! With everything life hands him, he has become a pro at making lemonade, especially with Emma right there by his side. He’s doubtful and discouraged, and he has every reason to be. But Emma is always reassuring, and his biggest cheerleader. And don’t get me started on that town! Be still my heart! Through supporting Branson, Emma is given the chance to believe in true love. I loved watching their story unfold. Having her move into the cabin behind his house, and teaching his brother really worked out for everyone! I should also maybe mention that this has SO MUCH going on! There is not a boring second! One step forward, two steps back. It’s sweet in all the right places for all the right reasons. This author knows exactly how to win me over! And it’s why I never hesitate to read one of her books!

My Favorite Quotes:
• “I see the person beyond the paper.”
• “You’re all I need.”
• “I’m waiting on you.”
• “Do not tell me you just came.”
• “Say it again, baby.”
• “I know it enough for the both of us.”
• “I can’t believe you are mine.”
• “You wanted it, now f!cking take it.”

There was so much promise from the blurb. Everything from the setting, to the plot points and the characters have all the makings of a great story, but it just fell flat.

Our main man, Branson, is an ex-con, rugged mountain of a man, who's trying to get custody of his 10-year old brother. Oh, and he really likes food. Like, can't stop thinking about & consuming food, a guy who can power through a whole buffet level of obsession. So much time is spent on his reactions to eating that it's basically one of his foundational character traits. I found it an odd quirk to focus on. Opposite to Branson is town newcomer, Emma, who isn't really a newcomer to Savage Valley. Her aunt runs the diner, she spent summers there as a child, and spent the previous year working in town, but not once had she & Branson ever met before. It's never addressed how they hadn’t crossed paths, or heard about one another through town gossip (which there is plenty of in this small town). Again, odd.

Emma has accepted a teaching job at the local elementary school and is trying to make her own way without the influence of her powerful last name. Her aunt has arranged for Emma to rent a home from Branson and forces the two to meet. Now, for Emma, love & marriage are a joke and a sham but, alas, one look into Branson's piercing green eyes is enough to make her change her opinion.

Shall we check off all the tropes we've now come across? We've got small town, opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, & insta-love - all which attribute to a muddled plot & relationship. I just didn't feel the connection between the two, not to mention that Branson offers up some questionable behaviour early into their relationship which gets glossed over much too quickly, a perfectly missed opportunity for some grovelling.

Speaking of, there were some elements of internalized misogyny written into Branson's character that made me uncomfortable. Branson "didn't know a lot about women, but he had heard from a few of his buddies that they could be difficult." I mean…what kind of a line is that? The use of 'doll' as a pet name (119 times to be exact which…ugh) for Emma felt a bit patronizing. As well, his treatment of a periphery female character (which I won't go into too much) was written pretty poorly - comments about how trashy & nothing she is…just, not good.

Overall, it was like throwing everything against a wall and hoping that something stuck. There were too many unnecessary conflicts & dramatic events that took away from a solid premise.

This is a strong start to a new series and I love the small town feel that we get with this story. There is a lot going on between these pages to keep you reading for answers.

Branson has been dealt a rough hand over the years, he made some bad choices and still feels the backlash from those choices. But he is doing everything he can to show everyone that he is a good man and wants to look after his little brother. He is a hard worker and trying very hard to provide the stable home life Ben deserves. Some town folk and justice system can't see beyond his past.

Emma is reaching out on her own and starting a new job in a small town where she visited often growing up. She is looking forward to being her own person and not connected to her family name. Loving her teaching job and connecting quickly with her students. She has found a wonderful little place on the mountain with a view, and a handsome grumpy mountain man to ogle.

Branson wasn't looking for a relationship, his focus was on getting Ben home. Emma was looking to start her life but wasn't looking for love. A surprise to both of them as they get to know one another and things move very quickly. Some heat and strong chemistry keep it burning. Soon they are both working strong to make life better for each other and together to get Ben home.

There is a secondary story full of suspense that keeps you thinking while reading. I did find it a little hard to connect with parts of the story but I did enjoy the book overall. I am excited to see where the series will take us next.

This is a love story that has some mystery and twists aswell.

Both Emma and Branson are misunderstood characters. Emma comes from a very well-known family but wants nothing more than the simple life and Branson made some mistakes in his youth that keep following him around.

🌲 marriage of convenience
🌲 single parent
🌲 small town romance
🌲 sexy, steamy moments

Some of the side characters really stole some of the scenes

Also, I'm a sucker for the nickname 'doll' 😍😍

This is told in 3rd person which isn't my favourite but I still really enjoyed reading it 😊

Branson and Emma didn’t know there story was already in motion but the whole entire town did. Branson is straight grumpy tattooed mountain man and Emma is pure ball of sunshine. When these two first meet you see the sparks fly and while it takes them a minute to get into the groove of things but when they do they are unstoppable. There are definite bumps in the road but they work through it side by side. I absolutely love these two and the fact that the whole town is in it to win it for these two just makes the so even better. I love the small town vines. There is drama, mystery, love passion and fire and throw in the most amazing and sweetest little boy that will completely melt your heart. This is a definite must read.

I loved the start of this series with Branson and Emma.

Please understand that some of the side characters stole the show in some scenes!!! I'm looking at you Ben!! That boy was just everything!!!

I am living for this mountain and it's community and watching the love blossom and expand with Branson and Emma just really made me feel good. They had some ups and downs but in the end...the mountain brought them together.

This was a good read. I liked almost everything about it. I just don’t understand the reason behind the break-ins and destruction at the construction sites. I feel like that motive could have been better explain. But other than that this was an excellent book.

Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review. Since reading 'Nothing Without You' where Branson first appeared, I was intrigued to find out about his story so I was excited to get this book.

Loved the flow of the story with the bit of suspense built in and the sizzling chemistry between Branson and Emma. There were times I wanted to smack Branson for the way he reacted against Emma but in a way you can understand it was driven by fear. It was not an easy story to read as Branson has gone through so much pain and burden that I was just holding my breath worried it would get even worse and finally break him. But the story was worth all the emotion it wrung from me and the ending (epilogue) was just perfect to me!

What a great quick read this was! Emma is starting a new job as a teacher in a town she loved visiting as a child. Her Aunt runs the local diner in this small quaint town and she is happy to be back. Branson has had a tough life. He didn’t have the best role model for a father and his mother has passed. His not so good choices landed him in trouble a few times. Now instead of have custody of his younger brother, he just has visitation. But he is trying to change that. I love how this town is so supportive of their own. I enjoyed the connection between Emma and Branson and how much they cared for each other. This was a fast paced well layered story and I truly enjoyed it. The characters were well developed and I loved The side characters. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next.

That's it I'm moving to Savage Valley so I can fall in love with my own grumpy, sexy, possessive mountain man.

Hot! Hot!Hot! Hotness overload. Branson is all man and then some and Emma is just the sweetest. The tenderness Branson has for Emma and his little brother is swoonworthy.

This was a perfect treat with plenty of drama, sexiness and loveable characters.

Small town, ex-con, wealthy teacher… these are the three things you absolutely need to know about before the spice.

Tropes: mf, grumpy/sunshine
Spice: 3.5/5 ya girl gets the best she has ever had and first!
Plot: I threw my phone, if that tells you anything. I love a good story that gets me mad about certain stuff to where I throw my phone but pick it right back up to continue reading. 4/5

This book was amazing!
Branson is everyone woman’s dream or at least mine!
Tall, built, tattoos, long hair, works with his hands, and lives on a mountain. He also has a heart of gold for the ones he loves. Being hurt by family and judged by his past he is a grumpy man towards others.
Emma is the new teacher in town ready to start this new journey in town. Renting from Bran on his land makes for an insta connection insta love plot for both.
Can Emma make the grumpy mountain man smile?
Can Bran be the home she has always wanted?

The story had just the right amount of drama, spice, and swoon worthy moments to make it fun and easy to read!

I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review! Thank you!!

An extremely interesting and exciting story. Written from the heart and filled with very strong and shaking emotions. The beginning was light and gradual in the lives of two people. One of whom considers marriage and love a joke, and the other struggles to keep his small family at all costs. At first glance, two extremely different souls that fate brings together to teach each of them that there is always hope, even in the darkest and most difficult moments. I really liked the story and I am very much looking forward to the sequel. As I read, I was able to discover everything I was looking for in a great book, such as mystery, tension, strong emotions, and a sweeping and strong love. The only thing I may not have liked very much is that Branson reacted at times too violently and at first, and then looked for ways to get revenge and forgiveness. But overall, I was fascinated and look forward to more interesting stories from the author.

KB Barrett you are just BRILLIANT!
I honestly got so sucked into this book I didn't want to leave it.

Branson is every girls dream guy. Tall, built, long haired mountain man who's alpha male and sweet as sugar. My god I fell in love with him, the devotion and love he has for his brother tipped me over the edge.

I have to admit I fell in love with Emma a bit too, well rounded character and beautiful inside and out, she doesn't believe in marriage but she fell hard and completely for Branson and did everything she could for Branson and Ben. Their story is full of love and uncertainty and I prayed they would get their HEA

I would give this book 100⭐️ If I could, definitely one I will be reading again and again

My Rate: ⭐⭐ 2/5

I started this book liking it very much. The tropes in it appealed to me: Mountain Man, Redemption story, a cute kid, the tenant of a cabin in the mountains, it seemed like an awesome book. But then came the insta love. After that, came the super quick and honestly very blah sex scenes. Then the hero became aggressive, yelling and cursing and being an absolute a-hole, that alone is a huge red flag for me. He apologized but then he did it again so that to me is a HUGE sign of a toxic and abusive relationship. Then there was the solution to the whole adoption thing, that for me felt weak and kinda bonkers/nonrealistic. Then the scene with the waitress, the sexist and honestly disgusting way he humiliated that woman, in front of the whole town. And after that, the attempt at an action plot, which to me just felt weak and pointless. Adding this all up, even though I read the entire book and did like a few parts of it, my rate is 2 stars.

Equality rate: ⭐⭐ 2/5

Like I said above, this book not only portrays but romanticizes very toxic, very abusive behaviors (this list is inspired by the negative behaviors on the (USA) National Domestic Violence Hotline and other resources for abusive relationships) like:

Aggressive behavior, Controlling issues, Dangerous power dynamics, Dominating decision-making process, Emotional violence, Insta love, Insult or humiliation of the love interest in front of friends and colleagues, Love interest believes in rigid gender roles, No Communication, Possessiveness, Sexism, Sexist Language, Slut-shaming, Unprotected sex (consensual or non-consensual)

I couldn’t find one positive behavior on my list, but lots of negative ones. And this just took out all the enjoyment I was having. I came out of this hating the hero and not liking the heroine, and disappointed because I liked the book in the beginning.

Adjectives and general thoughts: This book had a lot of potential, but the lack of structure and also the very sexist, misogynistic, violent, and honestly disgusting language here made me rate it down.

Thank you, K.B. Barrett and RMWB for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review!

Branson is older brother to Ben. They lost their mother years ago and Branson has been taking care of Ben. Because Ben is only 10 years old a social worker has been assigned to make sure that Ben is well taken care of. Unfortunately this social worker can't see past Branson's prison record and places Ben in foster care. Branson is doing everything in his power to prove that he is stable and reliable to gain custody back but it is a long fought road and doesn't allow time for a social life.

Emma is a school teacher recently hired in small town Savage Valley. She has a history in this town where her aunt Tracey lives. Emma comes from a family of wealth and prestige. Her parents divorced and her high maintenance mother has not really been much of a presence in her life. Her father, however, always made her feel wanted and loved. Despite this, she has often felt like she has been looking for a place to truly call home. When she arrives in Savage Valley and her aunt Tracey introduces her to her new landlord Branson they both may have met their match.

Branson and Emma begin a slow journey to get to know one another. Their relationship fast tracks with a plan to do just this but is it real or just for convenience to bring Ben home. The whole town works together to help them but there is another situation that threatens their happiness. Break ins and thefts have been occurring at Branson's construction sites and the people responsible may be targeting Branson and Emma.

The story is really lovely as Branson and Emma build to get to know one another and work together. The town as well is so supportive and it's really nice to see how the two of them grow both individually and together.

Pretty good read!

Emma(h) moves to savage valley, the small mountain town that her aunt lives in and one that she’s been visiting for years. Enter: Branson(H), an ex-con giant beast of a mountain man who’s one goal is to bring his brother home and fully gain guardianship of him. Emma’s aunt encourages her to rent a cabin from Branson and this is truly where the story begins.

I love books set within mountain type environments with rugged, lumberjack heroes so this book definitely checked some of those boxes for me. There were also some tropes included that I throughly enjoyed;
Single dad
grumpy/sunshine
Marriage of convenience
Instalove

Overall a really good read to pass the time and the general setting just felt like such a comfort read, I love mountain men, I love the secluded, would do anything for his girl, cabins and fireplaces type feel that these books offer and this one didn’t fail me in delivering that. It definitely gives me those wholesome and heartwarming emotions and I just love this type of setting in contemporary romance books. Aside from the romance, I also enjoyed the subplot, it definitely added some depth to the book, and I think it made the read more enjoyable.

I noticed some grammatical errors and I wish the word “yah” wasn’t used so much by literally every character but these are grievances that were relatively overlooked. The epilogue was super cute but I wouldn’t have minded seeing more into Emma and Branson’s future. Regardless, I enjoyed this read.

This book scaled along the rating, but I did land on three stars because the MMC appealed to me.

Overall, this book was difficult to follow simply because there was always so much going on at any given time. The overall conflict is clearly the situation with Bran’s brother, but there are so many smaller conflicts that it felt like a roller coaster of drama and emotions. Perhaps if there had been less whiplash emotional scenes followed immediately by resolution, it would have played out better. Several times I felt that Bran wasn’t really sorry for the things that had been done and the conflict was only resolving because the author was tired of writing the conflict.

I’m a fan of the grump/sunshine trope, so I enjoyed seeing that, though I would have liked more development in Brandon’s grumpy nature making way for her. The romance between the two mains just felt rushed, even for an instant love trope. At times, it was difficult to really feel their connection beyond just being told that they had feelings for one another.

There were some cute scenes that I enjoyed reading and I enjoyed the scenes between Bran and his brother. His emotional moments with his younger brother was what really pulled me to Bran and made me enjoy him. I also found it comical as to how involved the small town was in their lives. That felt like a good true “small town” situation and vibe.

Ultimately, if instant love and a decent bit of chaos within the small town setting is your thing, I can see how this would be an enjoyable book. And, if that is your thing, it would be something to look into.

Branson is an ex con doing everything he can to get custody of his little brother, he doesn’t have time for anything except hard work and his brother Ben. He definitely has no time for a relationship. Emma is new in town and has been told by her aunt that there is the perfect rental available. Will she be the answer that Branson didn’t know he needed or a distraction that could ruin everything?
I enjoyed reading this romance. There were a few things that bugged me, like the lack of even a short explanation around reasons why a couple of people were as horrible as they were rather than just being 2 dimensional characters for the plot to work. But it was easy to get past and just enjoy the rest. Branson was likeable and easy to root for; a man dealt a rough hand, although a few things were never explained. Emma was a likeable female character that really was the strength in the story. Overall an enjoyable romance with quite a bit of steam. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from BookSirens. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Having read Ms.Barrett's work before i've been looking forward to picking up more of her books! As soon as i stumbled across a teaser for this book i couldn't wait to read it! I added it to my TBR List right away. I jumped into The Mountain Roads world as soon as i could. I enjoyed this first book!

Emma and Branson's journey grabbed my attention right from the get go! As these two are brought into each other's lives, i couldn't wait to see how things would play out for them!

I really liked how i wasn't sure what all to expect in this story and how that got me into it even more. The chemistry between Emma and Branson was so good! I felt many things throughout with these two. I so enjoyed the setting of this story as well!

With The Twisted Roads Home, Ms.Barrett has created such a good read! I am so looking forward to diving back into The Mountain Roads world with the second installment, What Drives Us Home!

KB Barrett is a new to me author. This was my first book by her and I absolutely enjoyed it. The Twisted Roads Home was a beautiful, heartfelt, steamy, bit suspenseful small town romance, gave me total Melanie Moreland vibes. Branson and Emma were way too cute together. Branson has this cave man, grumpy, brutish outer shell with a secret sweet, caring, protective side only Emma & his brother, Ben, bring out in him. Emma was kind, compassionate, witty and strong who found her home and instant family with Branson, something she thought she never wanted. Branson was a man after my own heart, I found it so endearing his love for food. I loved the small town vibe she captured and how the whole town came together to help Branson and Emma when they needed help. This story was full of so many sweet moments, steamy scenes, instant love, and a few suspenseful twists and turns you don’t see coming. I’m excited to read more from this series and author and can’t wait to find out what happens with Connor!

Branson Smith has had to work hard all of his life. He has made some mistakes, but has come out stronger and is trying to gain custody of his younger brother, Ben. It seems no matter how hard he tries to be a good role model for Ben, someone doesn’t want him to succeed. Emma Worthington, the new teacher, is renting the cabin on his property. She is from a wealthy family and is attracted to Bran from their very first meeting. She loves the way he calls her “Doll”, one of his several one-word replies. He is totally captivated by Emma, but knows that he is not good enough for her. She brings such warmth into his life and they eventually surrender to their white-hot attraction. He is thrilled when it is proposed that she marry him to help gain custody of Ben…he will take her in whatever way he can get her. When she is injured, has he found his forever love only to lose her? Hot romance, humor, and suspense makes this a most entertaining read. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

Let me just start by saying Branson is the perfect mountain man. He’s grouchy and broody, but he’s also hard working and loves with all he has. Emma is who I strive to be. She is so sweet and caring but also no nonsense and won’t take Branson’s crap.
This book also touched me personally because I know how messed up the system can be. Every time Ben hurt, I hurt. Every emotion is beautifully displayed. I loved Emma’s dad and how he pushed Emma outside of her comfort zones because he knew that she could do it and that it would only benefit her. I also loved how Emma and Branson stood together against each other’s villains. You never expect your parents to be your harshest critics or biggest pains in the butt, but I love how each one stood beside the other during their toughest battles. This is a heart warming tale of family and fitting in when you thought you were the outcast. There is also a bit of mystery and suspense which just made me love them all the more.

This is a lovely book with a easy reading good flow storyline.

Tracy's definitely is the ultimate matchmaker, Emma and Bran never knew what hit them when they fall in love at first glance 😍
Great story shows that all relationships have ups, downs and drama but ultimately forever love conquers all.

There was plenty of drama, little bit of spice, pull on your heart strings moments and some great romantic moments. Bran is a keeper and shows past means nothing.

Overall great book just didnt like Bran calling emma doll (i know some people call their partners that and thats fine i personally just find it strange) And would have like a bit more explanation on Brans past felt like there was more to be said.

This book was a great read! Fast paced and easy to get into. I loved the family aspect of this book the most as well as the loyalty and devotion to each other. The spiciness aspect of this book was present but not overpowering. I think it was a good blend and added to the realism aspect of their relationship.

I loved Emma. She took everything that was thrown at her with the grace of a champion. I loved when she stood up for herself and the way that she fiercely defended Branson from the very beginning. Her automatic love and caring for Ben also made me smile and appreciate her even more.

Unfortunately, by the end of the book I was left with a few unanswered questions that are unresolved. There were also a few scenes thrown in randomly throughout the book that felt awkward and didn’t seem to flow very well while I was reading. They were short and abrupt and felt like random fillers.

Branson has a checkered past that is keeping him from adopting his brother after his mother passed away. Emma comes from a well to-do family and has recently taken a teaching position in the same town. When Branson becomes her landlord, sparks fly.

The Twisted Roads Home has a lot of twists and also a lot of jumps. While it is fast paced I often felt like sections jumped a little too fast---I has to suspend belief or just accept what I was told, especially in the beginning as the story set itself up.

Emma is written as a strong female which I appreciated, but Branson's temper made him mostly unlikable to me. Younger brother Ben was written well. I often find kids can be hit or miss, but he was a hit for me.

The book has a lot of steam and explicit scenes, for those who like that genre this will not disappoint.
