Called out on a night search for two missing teens, Jessie and her pack of search dogs again team up with Bitterroot County Sheriff Landon Reid on a dangerous case involving multiple missing persons, felonious assault, and, ultimately, murder.
When Reid takes a bullet following a lead from Jessie’s snooping drones, his second-in-command authorizes a manhunt to run the fugitives to ground. Despite the risk, and against her better judgment, Jessie sets her dogs to tracking down the criminals, only to find that she and the deputies with her are in lethal danger from silent killers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: An author, an artist, a musician, a web designer and more, some call her a Renaissance woman. Her friends just call her Dawn.
Publishing since the 20th Century, she usually writes under pen names, because she writes, not just cross-genre fiction, but across a broad scope of genres, including paranormal, mainstream, horror, Western family saga/romance, and science fiction. Since the turn of the Millennium, she’s chosen to independently publish five, now six, books, two as E. J. Ruek, two as C. J. “Country” James, plus a two volume science fiction epic, published under the name, Aeros.
Do not mistake this mystery for a cozy just because it has a gaggle of very endearing dogs in it. It's about the continued growth and healing of Jessie, my Jessie (what her granddad calls her). Jessica Anderson knows she's broken by the tragic death of her partner when she served in law enforcement. She blames herself, of course. Who wouldn't?
That's just a bit of background to let the reader in on Jessie's healing by being competent and intelligent. Somewhat at odds with Sherriff Landon since he's tough on her. He sees she is in pain but doesn't know how to react to her PTSD. He even feels a bit competitive with her, while recognizing her (and her dogs) value in searching for both victims and criminals with her dogs and drones.
When it comes down to whether or not you'll like this book, it will depend on your own heart. Can you feel Jessie's pain, do you see that her pack of wonder mutts are her therapy, can you figure out just what the heck is wrong with Landon that he doesn't appreciate her skills because of his own biases?
The mystery in the book is well-thought-out and can keep you guessing (the pleasure of reading a mystery is in figuring out whodunit). While the books are self-contained, you'll be a bit ahead of the game by reading book 1 first. But go ahead with book 2 first to get a taste for Keur's characters and her knowledge of how S.A.R. dogs are trained and just how damned smart they are. Wonder pups, indeed.
A definite good addition the the first book! Though I liked the first book better, this was worth the read! Finding out new information of the past to help tell the story, it kept you reading. Intense story! Can't wait for the next one!
Stray Trouble actually is a huge relief from much of the current mystery literature. Keur tells a great story that does not involve any abuse of women or gory details about the bad things that happen. And bad things do happen.
Jessica and her dogs are called in when there is a report of two missing teens (one of them eventually presumed drowned). An officer is shot when responding to the scene. It seems the teens tried to kill their step-mother. And this is just the beginning.
These events raise a moral and practical dilemma for Jessica. She has trained her dogs for search & rescue SAR), and trained them well. She and her dogs really are good at finding and rescuing people. But sometimes those being sought for rescue do not want to be found and will resist violently. Moreover, others recognize how valuable her dogs' skills could be when someone needs to be found and apprehended. Jessica comes under pressure to train her dogs to be part of manhunts, to which she is morally opposed. She understands that her dogs could be hurt, even killed when they are working, but her goal always is to help people. She certainly does not want to put her dogs in situations where they can be expected to to be hurt, even killed. She does not want a dog to die to save her own life. Throughout the novel Jessica wrestles with this.
Without giving away the story-line, I can tell you that Keur writes real characters. You care about these people. You love the dogs. There is much of family in this story--the good, bad and the ugly. There are some real heart-thumping moments in the novel. I mean, you really do have to put aside your grading because you can't put down the book.
Awesome read! It's so rich with all sorts of stories within the mystery itself that are entertaining and enriching like the visits to the Vet clinic. There is riveting, tense action as well and moving scenes that touched me deeply. I love the dialog with the various characters and the scenery there in Idaho. I enjoyed seeing more of the history and inner workings of the characters and especially Jessie as she moves along in life. This is a great series so far and I'm eager for more.
A great second installment to the Jessica Anderson K-9 mystery series. It kept me intrigued and solidly into the story throughout the entire book. The author gave us some more information about both Jessica's past and Landon's past, which helps explain several things, while presenting the mystery for this book in an engaging style. There were also numerous hints laid down regarding coming storylines in future books which this avid reader hopes aren't too far away. Excellent read! Intriguing Mystery! Complex Characters! LOVED IT!!
I have read both books in this series and hope you write many, many more. Each dog is so well described. I wish i could have a pack like Jessica's. Anyone who loves dogs would read your books.
So enjoying this series. Loving the character development and of course the dogs. Really looking forward to the next book as I want to know what happens next.
Well rounded characters, great story line, must start with book #1 and you will keep reading! Jess has had a hard time forgetting the pain of losing fellow cops on her last job. She trains SAR dogs now, but is learning to work with tracking police and military dogs. A search for deadly teens resulting is several deaths and severe injuries to law enforcement and civilians, yields a new understanding for Jess. On to #3!
Wow, I love this book so much! There is something special about the way it is written. It pulls me right into the story. The characters, both human and animal, are so well written and so enjoyable, and I learn things. The suspense and action are very entertaining. There is depth to the characters and the story. I will be reading the next ones in the series.

I've read book 1 and book 2 now, they are absolutely spellbinding! Written with attention to detail and fascinating with their twists and turns. I was unable to put them down, yet saddened when I finished them. I hope she continues this series.
