Kitty Worthington Mysteries #3

Murder at the Masked Ball

Rate this book
Amateur sleuth Kitty Worthington once more investigates when a noble lord plummets to his death, and a dear friend is suspected of murder. Can she catch the killer before her friend swings from the wrong end of a rope?

London. 1923. When an invitation arrives to the Duchess of Brightwell’s Midsummer Masked Ball, Kitty Worthington does not even think of declining. Not with a mother on the hunt for a noble husband for her. But no sooner does she curtsy to her hostess at the ball than tragedy strikes. A very dead earl is found at the bottom of a staircase, and it’s clearly the work of foul play.

Having proven himself a dab hand at dealing with the nobility, Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Robert Crawford is soon asked to investigate. In no time at all he hones in on Lord Newcastle, a friend of Kitty who'd earlier pummeled the earl for sorely abusing his wife.

Afraid her friend may wrongfully pay with his life, Kitty once more organizes her ace team, including her maid, two noble lords, a beloved sister, a lady, and Sir Winston, her still flatulent Bassett Hound. From the seediest parts of London to the fancy mansions of Mayfair, they fearlessly pursue the truth. For if they fail to find the killer, their dear friend may dance one last jig at the end of a rope.

When a noble lord takes a plunge to his demise, Kitty Worthington once again steps in to investigate and exonerate a friend who is suspected of the murder.
Kitty and her team of lords, ladies, friends and relatives step up to investigate and this one is just as good as the first two.
I love Kitty and her cast of characters, they have perfect chemistry making their interactions interesting, believable and entertaining . This has all the elements needed for a historical mystery and can be read as a stand alone if you missed the first two.
I recommend for a entertaining weekend read. Thank you to Hearts Afire Publishing and to Net Galley for the free ARC, I am leaving my honest review in return.

A fun and entertaining read with lots of great character's joining in to help solve the mystery. I haven't read the other books before this but still found it and enjoyable read although ideally you would read in order to follow some of the personal relationships. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely LOVE this series. The characters, the language, the plot with all the twists and turns and more twists - what a lovely period piece!
Kitty Worthington and company are at it again - trying to solve several mysteries that are all somehow connected! Will they make it in time to save one of their own from the gallows?
Together with murder (as well as a few other mysteries), a light is shone onto other important matters prevalent in society of yesteryear (as well as today). Social and societal acceptances, public perception, propriety - all have a part in this charming period cozy.

This book was an ARC. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read it.

First, after reading this book, I went back and read the first in the series to understand the relationships that carried over into Murder at the Masked Ball. I found that I enjoyed them both very much.

I loved that Kitty Worthington is an independent woman despite her romantic connection to Inspector Robert Crawford and that he allows her to be herself. She and her band of merry snoops excel at solving crimes, mostly murders. The good Inspector steps in to offer suggestions and guidance in the guise of doing his job and to keep an eye on Kitty, with whom he is besotted.

This cracking good tale centers around the Duke and Duchess of Brightwell's Midsummer Masquerade Ball, attended by 200 or so members of high society. In attendance are Lord Wakefield, a smarmy character if ever there was one, his much abused wife sporting facial bruising that makeup can't cover and her old flame, Lord Newcastle, whose torch is still very much lit.

When Wakefield is found at the bottom of the stairs, dead from a blow to the head, suspicion falls on Lord Newcastle, who is also a friend of Kitty and her family. The widow Wakefield engages Kitty to find the real killer before the man she loves is hanged. Through many twists and turns in the plot and a clever red herring in the form of Lord Hollingsworth, Kitty and her team solve the murder and Kitty gets her man.

Lord Wakefield, abusive philanderer, so deserved to die, and the accused Lord Newcastle had all the motives in the world to perform the deed, being in love with Lady Wakefield and having to stand by while Lord Wakefield beats her up. But Kitty and friends knew that Newcastle was not that sort of bloke and certainly did not deserve to hang for a crime she knew he did not commit.

I am gutted that I managed to miss book 2 of this series but as each works well enough as a standalone, I still managed to have an enjoyable read. Love Kitty, feisty, intelligent and independent but can also be reckless and silly at times, but with such a strong network of family and friends, she does not go terribly far wrong. Looking forward to more from Alexander and this time, I will be keeping my eyes peeled so that I don't miss book 4!!

Thanks to NetGalley and Hearts Afire Publishing for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

tl;dr
An intriguing central mystery featuring sympathetic characters and a dash of romance.

About
The murder of Lord Wakefield seems like an open and shut case. Lord Newcastle was found holding the murder weapon, and the body was located in a place no one else could get to. But Kitty Worthington doesn't believe him to be a killer, and she'll do whatever it takes to prove it - even if it means going up against the intelligent and upsettingly attractive Detective Inspector Crawford.

Thoughts
This is the third book in the series, so Kitty and her mystery-solving crew already have a few wins under their belt, and it shows. Character interactions feel well-developed, and the efficiency of the group makes for an easy read. The two new characters who join the group are both interesting, with one offering just a hint of love triangle for readers looking for romance. Kitty is a fun lead, smart enough to solve mysteries, and smart enough to know when to seek help. Her attitudes about women and classes reflect the attitudes of the time, and may be off-putting when her naiveté shows through, though. The main mystery is a good one - a murder with seemingly only one solution, and no other threads to pull on. The answers unfold at a good pace, with a few well-placed hints along the way to really stick the landing. Sub mysteries don't get as much time and are wrapped up with a handful of coincidences that might be frustrating to some readers. Romance is present throughout the book, although it largely takes a back seat until the mystery is solved, which I appreciated. No time to feel jealous when there's a dead body around. The ending was very well-timed, and makes a lot of space for future installments in the series.

Very well written and engaging cozy, set in the 1920's featuring 20 year-old Catherine "Kitty" Worthington ... self-declared bachelorette for life.

Kitty's knack for investigation and success at crime-solving proves handy when she finds herself present at the murder of a prominent aristocrat at the well- attended high society ball at the Brightwell Mansion.

Fingers are immediately pointed at his wife and her male friend, in whose hands the murder weapon was seen by a maidservant. But there's a lot more to this than meets the eye. The case takes Kitty and her team deeper and into an even larger, and much more dangerous operation with twists and turns to kept me intrigued and turning pages. Domestic abuse, drug smuggling and family reunion are just some of the story arcs that made for an interesting read, that even had me teary-eyed at times.

I must say, I had to use the dictionary a few times for some unfamiliar words, but since I love learning, it wasn't a problem for me. It wasn't too much to affect the flow of the reading though.

And even though Kitty is against marriage for herself, she's both enamored and angered by Inspector Crawford, the lead investigator for the murder. Having worked alongside him unofficially on 2 previous murder cases, they clash heads regularly. Firstly, becuase she's a woman doing a man's job (for which she is not employed), but mainly because he is also enamored with her and wants to keep her safe.

I received this book as an ARC. I didn't realize that it was the 3rd installment in the series, but I was
easily able to follow along. The author vaguely referenced the previous stories just enough to make the reader want to return to the beginning, but not too much that one felt lost or like they may have missed a piece of the plot. The listing of the Cast of Characters was very helpful as well.

I for one will definitely be returning to the beginning to see how Kitty got her start. This is my honest review :)

Kitty’s season is coming to a close and her mother is quite peeved that she has turned down all of the many proposals she has received. Kitty is more interested in perhaps starting her own lady detective business than finding a husband with money and a title. While Kitty is ready to be done with balls and her season in general her mother is tickled to get a coveted invite to the event of the social season the Duke and Duchess of Brightwell’s midsummer masquerade ball. As they arrive and are introduced to their hosts a death occurs, Lord Wakefield who was introduced earlier in the series a disagreeable man who abuses his wife. When one of the family’s friends becomes the prime suspect Kitty rounds up her group of sleuthing friends and family to get to work and save his hide before he’s convicted.
I so love this series! The characters are vibrant and come to life as you read. The era is presented in an historically accurate way. The real draw the thing that makes you want to read more is the intrepid group of sleuths led of course by our heroine Kitty. She is sweet, kind, loving, headstrong and determined to live life to the fullest. She leads the band of friends and family through their cases with aplomb. With this case I was worried all the evidence was quite incriminating but she never lost focus or hope. So many secrets and twist were revealed I was worried but the author led us a merry chase. A most satisfactory conclusion in the case and personally for Kitty. I eagerly await the next installment!!.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am completely hooked on this series.

While attending the Midsummer Masked Ball, an earl is found dead at the bottom of a staircase. When Kitty’s friend is arrested for the murder, she, along with her investigative team, set out to solve the murder and free their friend.

Kitty is one of the best female detectives to come along since Kinsey Millhone. She’s her own woman, has tons of courage, and loyal to her friends and family. All of the characters are interesting and fit perfectly within the story. The plot was clever. I enjoyed how the author weaved social issues of the time into the story. Kitty’s sister, Margaret is a champion for woman’s rights. Kitty’s mother supports the Magdalen House, a house for fallen woman. The author’s writing style is all story and keeps the plot moving. The ending was quite satisfying and leaves the reader looking ahead to the next book in the series.

My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are
my own.

The ensemble cast (the ace team) was a little different to many of the series I have read to date. It made for an interesting approach as they all had to agree and work together and even the authorities pay attention.

The story was a goodie and the author touches on some of the harder issues of the time (eg blatant wife/women abuse) whilst, for the most part keeping it light and cosy.

A most enjoyable, easy cozy murder mystery read.

This is my first read of a Magda Alexander novel and so too this series. It is written to stand alone and it was easy to pick up and follow the relationships as the mystery unfolded.

With thanks to Netgalley, Hearts Afire Publishing and the author for my advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Kitty is on the Case !! . . .

Invited to attend the Duchess of Brightwell’s Midsummer Masked Ball, Kitty Worthington is on the scene when the body of a dead Earl (Lord Wakefield) is discovered at the bottom of a staircase, obviously murdered.

When Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Robert Crawford is brought in to begin the investigation, he immediately suspects Kitty’s family friend, Lord Newcastle, who had fought with the deceased Lord Wakefield previously (for “disciplining” his wife Lady Wakefield regularly for not producing an heir). Kitty immediately gathers her “team”, including her basset hound Sir Winston, to begin her own investigation before her friend is hanged for a crime he did not commit. Can she and her sleuthing team find the killer?

OK, so I loved book one but missed book two. This one is much fun with both romance and a solid investigation of the time while reminding us of the groundwork laid by the alert and involved women of that era. All of the characters are interesting and well drawn while the settings and attire are clearly and imaginatively portrayed. But it's the whodunit that really demanded my attention. The abusive spouse of a friend is dead at the foot of the stairs during a masked ball. Did he fall or was he pushed?
Let Kitty's sleuthing begin! Great light read!

Oh, how I’ve missed this series. Each book in it comes out fairly quickly, but I miss these characters and this world so much that it never feels fast enough. The reason? Magda’s attention to detail and how she lays the ground work for future story arcs. Lady Wakefield and Lord Newcastle being a prime example. They’ve come up as a pair here and there in the last two books. Just enough that the reader knows there’s a serious back story, but not enough to ruin the surprises to come. Magda packs a lot in about everyone in Kitty’s investigative group without it feeling rushed. Absolutely loved it and am greatly anticipating the next one.

Another fine entry in the Kitty Worthington series. If you like Anne Perry or Phryne Fisher, you'll really enjoy this series-it hits all the highlights-spunky female heroine, a large cast of fun side characters with their own lives, and historical glitz and glamor with a smidge of romance. In this entry, Kitty and her committee are once again trying to save someone who has been wrongfully accused even though the evidence seems incontrovertible. The villains seriously deserve their fate, the heroes are fun and this is a light, fun romp all the way through.

Kitty Worthington has declined many proposals and her mother is worried, but Kitty thinks she can become a private detective first, then marry later. She has had luck in two previous cases and decides to try her hand at a third. When her family arrives at the masked ball hosted by the Duchess of Brightwell, Kitty is confronted with a dead earl at the bottom of the steps. When a close friend is charged with murder, Kitty knows she must use all her resources to prove Lord Newcastle is innocent. An engaging mystery with a very likable and extremely intelligent character in Kitty Worthington.

I am going through these pretty fast. I like to immerse myself in a series, and it’s always fun to “catch up” with a series, kind of like binge-watching a show. Magda Alexander’s writing and Kim Bretton’s reading are paired up well with these cozy mysteries. I would say that many of the male characters seem a bit open-minded about female independence for the 1920’s, but since this isn’t a deep dive into the social constructs of the time, I’m willing to let it pass. Another good installment in the series.

I cannot get enough of Kitty and her family and friends, they are such fun to read about. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery, adventure, romance, and suspense. Please, please, please keep them coming.

Amateur sleuth Kitty Worthington finds herself once again investigating a murder. This time, a noble lord is slain at a masked ball, and Kitty's friend is accused of the crime. She's not sure who did it, but she knows she can trust her friends to help her discover and unwind the clues.
With plenty of twists, this book kept me entertained! I also really liked the modern connection to women's rights, female sexuality and gender equality.
And the writing style is engaging. The author chooses action words that keep the book moving and keep it fun. I wish I would have read the first two books of the series, but for sure I will read future editions!

fantastic

I started with an open mind as this was my first Kitty & co. story. And very early in the book I was completely hooked. All the characters are brilliantly developed, the story is thrilling & I love the golden age setting. It involves many modern truths & gains great depth, rarely touched on in other books of this era& while not heavy handed, they add to the impressive style of the author. Bravo Ms Alexander! I’m waiting on your next adventure.

The story is good and the characters excellent but you can tell it’s not written by a Brit. It feels like she’s heard of things but not researched them. She talks about Devon as if it’s a town not a county, blueberries weren’t a thing here then and I don’t know if we had muffins back then either. Women did not go into the general bar areas in public houses at that time as it was still against the law.

brilliant as ever with lots of suspects as usual

You begin to wonder if this case will ever be solved, especially as is usual in these books, an innocent friend is being arrested. This time Kitty has a retired inspector to assist her. Her intrepid sleuthing finally gets the culprit, whilst finding a dastardly reason a accompanying the murder.
Plus we have a very happy ending to this book which I won’t disclose. Just read it, you won’t be disappointed!

A great set of stories !

This is the third book, the next one won't be available until January 2023. I do love the stories that are set in the 1920's. I like the clothes and they are so well described that I can see them in my mind. The family and friends are strong characters too. I'm sure that you will enjoy these stories too. Happy Reading !!!

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. I was able to find the audio version through my local library app. Wow I was really looking forward to this book. I cannot believe how badly written this is. This book just pours out feminist bullcrap. This is supposed to take place during the 1920's and all the woman are such awful feminist it is so so soo annoying. So much so I cannot finish after reading 60%. The main character is vile and obnoxious. She loves how a gentlemen she just met talks freely about sex?! A group of people including a bunch of women and couple of men are talking and the women talk about birth control and how unmarried women can't take their classes about family planning and a women gets upset and yells about how the men think it is disgusting of the women to talk about such matters right now. And I agree with them. And all the women including the main character (the book is written first person) the main character talks about how absolutely wrong the men were to voice their opinion. Just absolutely awful writing. Yeah yeah we get it author you are a flamming feminist trying to beat it over the head of your readers. Spare me.

A light, breezy murder mystery set in the upper echelons of London society. The writing is unfortunately clunky — and the language surprisingly stiff for the 1920s setting, making one wish for a master of mystery and words like Dorothy L. Sayers. Still, the characters are likable, so I could see myself going back to read more from the series if I need mindless entertainment and have nothing better to read.

Mayfair, London, England. Worthington House. July 1923. Magda Alexander’s Murder at the Masked Ball (Kitty Worthington Mysteries, #3) finds Kitty’s mother still trying to attach Kitty to the appropriate and acceptable husband. Tonight’s venue is a Masked Ball at the Duchess of Brightwell’s mansion. Kitty decides her costume will be that of a Spanish flamenco dancer. Her sister, Margaret, chooses to attend as Boadicea, the warrior Queen of the Iceni people (love this!). Margaret works at the Women’s Clinic which does family planning for married women. It is mentioned that to counsel unmarried women is against the law at this time (We’ve come a long way, Baby. !?!). At the ball Lord Wakefield is found dead. Unfortunately, a friend of Kitty’s is arrested for this crime. Kitty gathers her crime solving group which consists of her maid, her sister, a lady, two lords, and Sir Winston, her dog to help free her friend. What is uncovered is a definite statement to the 1920s and the unfairness of some laws to women. I like this series. Very enjoyable and believable characters. An exciting event for Kitty happens at the end! 4 stars.
