A Curse of Hope and Shadows: Part One

Rate this book
You have sheared my home from me, Dimitri Von Mortimer. You have taken whatever feeling of safety I knew and twisted it around yourself.

But I cannot go back to you. I cannot.

Taking a job as a companion to a young lord afflicted by a horrifying curse, Adeline Elsing is initially met with anger and hostility. Unperturbed by his strange appearance and foul temper, she soon wins him over with her cheerful, no-nonsense attitude.

But as their feelings grow from friendship to something forbidden, they soon discover the curse is far from over...

And that hope is the most painful curse of all.

An emotional, slow-burn romance of forbidden love, unseen dangers, and the haunting hold of grief.

Katherine Macdonald

Katherine "Kate" Macdonald writes the books she wishes she could have read more of as a teen—stories of fierce girls and gentle boys, of romance and adventure, and where the "three Cs" (chemistry, communication and consent) reign supreme. There may still be a little bit of miscommunication along the way as the characters grow as people, but she tries not to rely on that trope too much!

She loves books packed with witty banter, stories where you can feel the love growing between a pair, that include excellent, well-developed side-characters and a few subtly-foreshadowed twists and turns. She despises toxic relationships and tales that rely on old-fashioned notions of male and female stereotypes. She enjoys bending expectations and crafting worlds where sexism is a thing of the past. She considers herself an LGBTQIA+ friendly author, and her stories include a range of characters from within the community and absolutely no discrimination in sight.

She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Lancaster University, and a PGCE in teaching English and Drama from the University of Exeter. She's been a writer since she was old enough to hold a crayon, but it was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours of sleep a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her debut novel, "The Rose and the Thorn." It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.

At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.

She lives in Devon with her manic child and well-behaved cats.

Well, well, well . . . There it is, ladies and gentlemen and literate animals: the first Beauty & Beast (and really, first book ever) that turns me off merely with the protagonist's name.

Dimitri.
Von.
Mortimer.

Russian-sounding first name, German nobiliary particle "von," and Anglo-Norman surname Mortimer. In what credible world does a "Beast" have such a colourfully wacky mix? Not in one I'd like to read, as it indicates shaky worldbuilding and a plot all about romance. (Plus, this type of hero is a "beast" because of the usual trope of being a moody jerk more than anything.)

Hard pass!

Of all the amazing fairy tale retellings I've read by Katherine Macdonald, I can say with absolute certainty that A Curse of Hope and Shadows broke me the most. As with all her books, it was a masterpiece of wonderful prose and top-notch descriptions that sucked me into the story and kept me turning page after page. It's a slow burn full of repressed feelings and forbidden love. That much I expected, but I didn't expect it to hurt so much!

Don't get me wrong, A Curse of Hope and Shadows is a true joy to read. But for every moment of bliss there's another right after that will rip out your heart and crush it. That's because of how skilled Macdonald is at making loveable, believable characters. You root for them with every fiber of your being. When they break, you break with them. For real. Adeline is the sweetest, most selfless character I know. She is the star that Dimitri needs in his life, even if society tells her she's not good enough for him. I absolutely loved the forbidden love aspect of this book. It's my favorite trope and Macdonald does not disappoint. But even more than I loved Adeline's character, I so so badly wanted to hug Dimitri. That poor guy. With a dead mom and horrible, wretched father, Dimitri is alone. Cursed and lacking a single friend, he has no one to help him get through the horrible pain he suffers as a result of his curse. Until Adeline comes. I just loved them so much and truly enjoyed every single second of this slow, sloooooow burn relationship. Trust me, it's worth the wait.

That said, the ending! It got me in all the feels and I am so so ready for the sequel. 5/5 Stars!!

I read one other book by Katherine Macdonald and really loved it, so when BookSprout let me know that there was an arc available for this book I had to check out the synopsis! And that was love at first sight. I was intrigued, curious and therefore really looked forward towards reading it. However, I might have gotten a few arcs too many the last couple of weeks so I really had to have patience before I could get started.

This book is not action packed, not spectaculair and it takes a while to build up towards a dramatic and heartbreaking finale. That's exactly what I loved about it. We really got the time to get to know the characters, to see them bond and interact, to see their relationship develop from one stage into the next. And therefore we also got the chance to grow attached to these characters, to start caring about them.

I have to admit that the relationship developed in such a way that it was clear that they were crossing professional boundaries left and right. That was a little uncomfortable at times, but we could also feel that both characters needed this, needed this friendship, this kind of love and therefore it was easy to understand why the characters didn't really bother about it anymore. And the book does that with more unconventional and socially frowned upon situations.

What I really loved is that this book is in so many ways about love, about friendship, about the power of the heart, of caring, of being there for someone. And love in so many ways. Even the people who sometimes say harsh words mean well. If only the father, the Duke, would be able to understand love like that. However, it's clear that the story isn't finished yet and that there's more to come. I can't wait to read it!

I received a free ARC copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

How does Katherine continue to make such wonderful Beauty and the Beast retellings while also making each one unique and its own story? It’s a bizarre and amazing form of magic she possesses and I adore it! This story is just the latest in spells that she weaves with words.

I adore the atmosphere for this one. It’s a different feel from her previous retellings. There’s an old but noble feel to it and the entire world operates on this. The characters, the setting and even the choice of language set the mood brilliantly.

And naturally, as is expected of her work, we get a lovely set of characters. I love all of them. The main character remains sassy and independent but still maintains a sense of vulnerability. Her love interest carries a mystery but also a deep pain to him that I want to know more and surround him with all the hugs.

Definitely one of the best Beauty and the Beast retellings. I am not responsible for what happens to your emotions.

But read it.

Described (not by me!) as "Beauty and the Beast meets Downton Abbey meets meets Me Before You" this book baby contains all of my favourite things: slow-burn, forbidden romance, witty banter, whump and whump galore, sunshine and grumpy, ballgowns, copious descriptions of the weather, strong family bonds, no-nonsense women who get things done, heart-wrenching scenes, pain galore, and just a bit of magic.

Like most of my stories, there isn't much in the way of world-building and the plot is just enough to draw the characters together, so if you're looking for fantastical worlds and fast-paced action, you won't find it here. This story is about two broken people finding and healing one another, only to find themselves struggling in a world that doesn't want them to be together.

It is the first of three parts, but I intend to publish two and three in a single volume, unless the stories run away with each other again. The later parts contain more action, a stronger plot, and a greater look at the world in which the characters reside. Nevertheless, it remains at its heart a love story, and I've no doubt plenty of people with fall in love with these two beautiful, broken souls.

Some thoughts upon re-reading - 3.5 stars
I went to read this book again after receiving an ARC for Parts II and III. I didn't remember very well what had happened and I wanted to refresh my memory before starting. Well, was it weird! I did not like it the way I did before, not at all. The relationship between the main characters read strange to me, like it never did click. I was on board for all the while when they were starting to get to know each other and becoming friends but, then, the romantic relationship didn't make sense to me - it happened too fast, in my opinion, and there was something that felt off all the while. Maybe because of the dynamic between a lord and his maid? Although, I'm not usually bothered by that. Maybe because Dimitri was 16, while Adeline was 19? But that didn't feel like a huge gap while reading even if he was so young... I can't quite put my finger on it but it didn't work for me and, since the relationship is the main point of the book, my enjoyment of the book this time around was much lower.
I did enjoy the slowness of the story, the way it was an interesting character study. A lot.

The original review - 5 stars
I was expecting I’d like this book but was a bit wary because this is not exactly my kind of thing (the pistols and darkness in the cover threw me off). Well, it apparently was very much for me because I want to give it all the stars!
If life had not been in the way, I’m quite sure I would have foregone sleep and read this all in one long, delicious sitting.
This was a very character-centric story with strong Beauty and the Beast vibes. But most of all, it was a story about broken people loving each other and it was a delightful read, even if there were a lot of moments that were sad.
I can’t wait for the next part of the story (next spring, why are you so far away?) and I just wish I could better describe this book because it truly was a very good read.

I received a review copy of this book but my review is truly my own opinion.

Where do I start with this book? I have been a fan of Katherine Macdonald for a while now, but this book... This book is on another level.

The slow burn romance was drawn out beautifully, with longing looks and whispered words just oozing from the pages.

The role of grief and how one deals with it in different circumstances is portrayed so well throughout the book, and Macdonald captures it flawlessly.

A Curse of Hope and Shadows dragged every emotion from me, I laughed with the characters, I cried with them. I felt Addies sadness and loss and I felt Dimitri's anger and hopelessness. And I felt their love.

This is a new favourite of mine. It is beautiful and bittersweet and has left me wanting... No.. Needing more

Heart-wrenching and beautifully emotional

This story is so sweet and soft and exquisitely delicate. You read it with your breath held, as if one wrong move will have the world these beloved characters have constructed around themselves crumbling to ruin. You know it's inevitable, that something is bound to disrupt the fragile balance, but Adeline and Demitri have become so viscerally REAL, that you hope against hope that they might evade it. That the author will simply allow them their happy ending, after all the pain and loss they've already endured. This is a story of hope and love and healing, and I absolutely loved it.

Let me start this review by saying I need the next book immediately.

After having read most of Kate’s books, I thought I was at least a little prepared for the book to mess with my emotions, but I was very wrong. I can’t decide if this book or Thief of Spring is my favorite of hers!

This book felt like a beautiful mix of Me Before You and Beauty and the Beast, with a dash of Cinderella.

Can we all give a round of applause to my one and only Queen Katherine?

Going to be honest here, I legit cried for the most of the book. It was such a rollercoaster of emotions. I did laugh a bit too, as my Queen knows how to write excellent banter.

I loved the book from the first word till the last, okay lying I started loving it once I saw there is a new book based on Beauty and the Beast and the Beast's name is Dimitri and my Queen wrote it. So obviously I was like say no more, just give it to me already. And honesty, if I didn't have uni stuff to do I would have read it in one sitting.

What else did you like about this book Paula? You would ask, so let me tell you.

I don't even need to say it was written so good because it was as usual, the pace was amazing, loved characters' every inch of them, hated one of them (he shall not be named), emotions were high, made me think about my life (and you know some people say that reading fiction is a waste of time, I know I am shooked as well, shaking my head), wished I was there, so yeah everything I look in a book was there. And well, I do think I replied to that imaginary question above lol. I am actually lost on words right now, but I think I covered it in general.

So yeah, cannot wait until the next books are out.

I encourage y'all to read this and other books Kate wrote because they are excellent, chef's kiss really. I was planning another book right after it but I feel like I need a break hahaha.

Btw, whoever put the instructions to add gifs, bless you, you make reviewing so much fun.

A Curse of Hope and Shadows is the best book I’ve read this year, if not ever!

Where do I even start with this story? First of all - the emotions! Good god I felt everything that Addie felt for Dmitri and vice versa. The descriptive way Macdonald writes brings the characters to life in a way unlike any other author I’ve read.

And the ROMANCE! The slow burn love that the reader watches comes to life before their eyes, the bond that grows and strengthens from nothing into everything, the healing power that their love has for each other - GAH! This might be one of my favorite romances ever!

Honestly if you are looking for a romantic slow burn story with a healthy dose of emotional pain and sweet moments, this is the book for you. I know this is definitely one I’ll be rereading! Macdonald has once again cemented her spot as one of my favorite authors with this masterpiece!

*I had the privilege of beta reading this book and this is my honest, voluntary review.*

4.5 stars for this MASTERPIECE.

This book deserves all the love and heart that was projected from within it. I utterly devoured this story in two sittings - and though I'm left screaming for the sequel, and I am - I loved every moment of this wonderful story.

Magic and love and hope flew off each page. The messages of being only as strong as you make yourself really struck a cord for personal reasons and I think that's why I loved this even more. This whole book felt so personal to me, so much FOR me.

Adie and Dimitri are sweethearts who need to get their shit together. I swear. But I love them all. All the characters are my favourites, except the Duke. FAT EW to that piece of garbage.

I look forward to the sequel and honestly hope the months go quickly so I can get it faster.

Where do I start ? I discovered Katherine's books not too long ago with Thief of Spring, and I have been obsessed ever since. Everytime I read a book of hers, I can't put it down. She's quickly becoming my favorite romance author.

And A Curse of Hope and Shadows didn't disappoint, far from that. Through a rollercoaster of emotions, I laughed, I smiled, and I cried, while following Adeline and Dimitri's tragically sweet story. Even though this is fiction, some parts felt so real and relatable, it left me sobbing. It's a soulmate love story, the kind of love you'd like to meet at least once in your lifetime. It is beautifully written, and I can't wait to know what will come next for these two !

Thank you for writing this lovely book, Katherine. It was a wonderful journey.

Wow. Just... wow.
I was so excited about this book that I read it the day it released. I'm late in posting this review because I couldn't figure out how to describe just how much I loved it!
The characters had such depth! They were complex and realistic and oh so lovable, from our two main characters Adeline and Dimitri to supporting characters such as Alexei (a fantastic friend) and 'Minty' (the stern but secretly sweet maternal figure).
And speaking of love, the romance between Adeline and Dimitri was so incredible! The slow burn was beautifully paced, their feelings so eloquently described... I absolutely adore these two!
I came very close to crying at one or two points while reading (since I read those parts in free moments at work, I had to keep the tears contained)! I won't spoil anything, but this book certainly went straight to my heart. Through it, really. Moments of pain, moments of joy, plenty of banter and humor and suspense and LONGING-the longing will hit you right in the feels!
One of my favorite books I've read this year. I eagerly await the next part of the story!

I've adored many of Katherine's books and this is definitely one of those up at the top.
The characters are wonderfully written, relatable and charming. Each of them have their own personality that you can tell who is who easily.
Dimitri, our poor boy is so loveable and you can't help but feel for him.
So many emotions felt while reading this. I cried, I chuckled and I want to read more!
That ending damn it!!
A brilliant read by a talented author. I cannot wait for part 2.

I highly recommend this book to any romance reader!

This book made me so HAPPY!

I have been in an awful book slump lately, and when I pair that with the fact that I only have a few hours available for reading per week, it gets really frustrating. Last night by pure luck, I realized Katherine released another book and I KNEW my slump was going to be over!

Without spoiling, I'm going to let you know that this book was chicken soup for my soul.
I needed:
1. A not-too-complicated plot to be able to pick up and put down
2. A likable main character
3. Fluffy sweet romance moments
4. Yet another Beauty and the Beast retelling (THEY ARE MY FAVORITE, LEAVE ME ALONE)
5. Grumpy guy is soft for sunshine girl

And this book gave me ALL of that! Extra points for this book not having a catty female nemesis for the main character.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹: I had the chance to read an ARC of this book which releases tomorrow. ☺️ If you enjoy grumpy/sunshine, slow-burn romance with a touch of Downtown Abbey, you'll probably love it, too. Can't say anything else and I am cursing the wait for the sequel to know how the story'll end. 🥰

𝗜𝗻-𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹: It's a slow-burn (and I mean slooooow burn), with bantering heroines, grumpy-meets-sunshine vibes, and suffering. Oh gods, SO much suffering, and an even greater love which shows that love cannot lift but ease the pains we share.

What is it now? 𝔸ℂ𝕆ℍ𝔸𝕊 is a YA beauty-and-the-beast retelling and the first of two (?) books. Katherine loosely oriented herself on the original fairy tale, only carrying over the Prince's curse and the female heroine's book love. By doing so she took a lot of liberty in telling an original story fitted in a well-known frame, that incorporates topics of first love paired with societal hierarchy.

The plot was not all-too-surprising but held lovely twists and turns and a great love story unfolding before your eyes. However, pain, grief, suffering are always around the corner and apart from the emotional pain, the societal structure does nothing to aid the heroines' relationship. Aside from the story, Katherine MacDonald is a terrific writer who knows her way around the English language. Beautifully written and captivating.

On a side note: I love that in the paperback each chapter's title has floating dandelion seeds equaling the chapter number. 😍

Ahhhh… thank you Katherine Macdonald for keeping the beauty and the beast retellings coming! I knew I would love this book - it’s a BatB recreation, it’s by K Macdonald - so I had extremely high expectations going in. Still blew me away with its beautifully developed characters and relationships.

This is the story of Dmitri, a young lord battered and broken by a curse, and Adeline, the young maid who is hired to care for him in the hopes that she will become his only friend. Well she becomes that and so much more. The emotions from Dmitri were heart wrenching- so much pain, loss, defeat, and bitterness. He was truly on the edge of giving up. From the first moment Adeline enters his life, he sees the breath of fresh air and light she is but he is almost too afraid to hope for any kind of companionship. With her sunny demeanor she slowly gains his trust and he allows her to get close to him and see the hurt he is carrying. Gah these two - the slow build is beautiful!! I need a better word than beautiful- it just isn’t enough! There are boundaries in their way of course and splendid secondary characters along for the ride. Such an engaging and emotional ride!

I am anxious for the continuation of their story in the next book - they are a beautiful pair that are fighting to heal their damage together. Loved love, love this story and highly recommend this and any other book by Katherine Macdonald!

You'd think I would see the words "part one" in the title and say to myself "Hey, maybe you should wait to read this," but nope, I read it anyway and now I have to WAIT. Ugh.

Now, as the for book itself, I honestly really liked it. I'm a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings and I read three of Katherine Macdonald's books last year, including two Beauty and the Beast retellings. I'm a big fan of her work and knew I had to read this one as soon as I heard about it. This wasn't as good as my previous experiences with her work, but I still found the concept interesting, and I love seeing how parts of the original fairy tale are changed or altered in retellings.

I will say, the characters in this book skew a bit younger than other books I've read by her and it felt a bit weird to me to have characters so young. I know it's fantasy, but this felt a little more realistic, almost like a period drama, even if there was magic. Dimitri is 16 years old, while Adeline is 18, and I know I shouldn't care that she's older, but it bothered me off and on throughout the story. They've both been through a lot of trauma, and I loved that they could find comfort and support in each other, but there were moments when their age really showed. It's one of the reasons I don't always enjoy realistic YA novels.

I do think it will be interesting to see their story play out across one or two more volumes. I think I saw somewhere that there will be three parts. I don't know if the other parts will focus on other characters and their stories (Elliott and Thomas, anyone??), but I'll definitely check them out!

❤ Quote:
"I would have spent my life in shadow if I could have spent it at your side."

Cosa dire? ❤😍

Katherine Macdonald has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This novel is a gorgeous story of two people who each have a painful past (albeit wildly different backgrounds) finding each other and falling in love despite challenging circumstances. I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that Katherine Macdonald is a gifted author. The dialogue sparkles and the characters are well developed and believable. She’s found some beautiful imagery to convey the story, and I am finding it to be a rich and satisfying October read. I am very glad that because I’m late to the party on this one, I’ll be able to read Parts Two and Three in a few days!

Dmitri and Adeline, our Beauty and the Beast, in this imaginative retelling of a classic favorite, leave nothing to be desired, other than the continuation of their story. I did not want it to end. I need more and I am so thankful that book 2 in their story will be released in the spring. You could not help but love our Beast, as he was so very good to the core and conscious of the feelings of everyone around him. I loved the spin on the curse, how he looked until the “Change”. And Adeline, having to grow up far too quickly for her age, is everything I desire in my female lead. She’s strong and capable and so smart. She’s human and broken, but with an inner strength that has you rooting for her every step of the way. This slow burn romance offered characters that touched my heart, a fresh take on their love story, and a supporting cast that I hope to read more about. I am never disappointed in a Katherine Macdonald novel, and am very happy to say that this one ranks among one of my very favorites!

I have read several, if not all of Katherine's retellings. Each time I say it can't get any better after this one. I was wrong! This is part 1 of 2 in Dimitri and Adeline's story and next spring can't come soon enough for Part 2. This is one of the most amazing retelling of Beauty and The Beast. A child cursed because of a father, a girl that loves book, but also has suffered her own 'curse'. Together they come in a story that is as old as time.

I am telling you, if you love BATB, you must read this! Do you love funny banter, witty humor, and a sassy gal main character? This is a book for you. The characters will warm your heart, you will fall in love with them, as I did.

A Curse of Hope and Shadows is a wonderful reimagining of Beauty and the Beast, and so much more. Macdonald once again excels at making me feel all the feels. Dimitri's loneliness and hurt just drips from the page, and I hurt for him. I wanted so badly for him to let Addie in, and waiting to see that happen was deliciously agonizing. Addie never gives up on Dimitri. She is the perfect sunshiny heroine, and she knows when to try to make him laugh, when to kick him in the pants, and when to leave him be. And the Duke?! He is an odious, horrible man who should have been the one cursed, not his son.

So now I'm left with the feeling that I need to get my hands on the rest of the story posthaste. Macdonald has again clearly demonstrated why she is the queen of fairy tale reimaginings, and I will gleefully read everything she writes.

After reading this, I immediately picked up every other Katherine Macdonald book listed on KU.

Reasons you should read this book and every other book by KM:
1. Dramatic declarations of love
2. Badass heroines who definitely don’t need a man
3. Men who know their heroine is badass

Absolutely incredible fantasy slow burn romance!

I loved everything about this story. World building, characters development and depth, plot, twists… Everything! The most, however, I think it was the writing style. Dialogues mixed with internal thoughts. Scenery brought up to the level I could feel cold autumn air on the road character were walking by. Sense of desperation tearing me from the inside, as the story continued across pages. It may have been fantasy with curses and enchantresses, but the emotions were so real!

It's a hard to put down story. For many reasons – including perfect peace, which just made chapters flow – I found myself constantly staying up late, not realizing for how long I was reading for, because that’s how fantastic this book was. I could simply say: ‘truly gripping masterpiece’, however, even that is an understatement. I have fallen in love with characters, with Adeline’s family and author’s writing style.

I highly recommend this book to readers enjoying fairy tale retellings and/or those looking for a slow burn romance you can lose yourself in.

I look forward to reading the next part in this series, as well as other books by very talented Katherine Macdonald.

I love these characters and am so draw into their world. The characters are well developed with compelling back stories, strong motivation and goals. They have bold personalities and make bold choices. They have captivating internal conflicts with multiple difficult decisions to make. The world building is detailed, imaginative and so well done that you're drawn into a fantastic world unlike any other. This story has an interesting story line full of suspense, danger, action, mystery, unexpected twists, passion and an ending that left me wanting to read the next book in the series. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. I can’t wait to read more of this series! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ugh my goodness, you guys/gals/nonbinarypals. This is so good.

A sloooow burn, little bit of "Me Before You", little bit "Beauty and the Beast". Fun characters, gorgeous relationships.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend. Go read it.
