Alexa Chase #5

The Killing Fog

Rate this book
When a fugitive flees the country, U.S. Marshal Alexa Chase is summoned to criss-cross Europe to find him and bring him back. On a wild cat-and-mouse chase, Alexa must venturer outside of her comfort zone to stop this killer before he strikes again.

Alexa Chase, 34, a brilliant profiler in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, was too good at her job. Haunted by all the serial killers she caught, she left a stunning career behind to join the U.S. Marshals. As a Deputy Marshal, Alexa—fit, and as tough as she is brilliant—could immerse herself in a simple career of hunting down fugitives and bringing them to justice.

But with her recent work a big success, the FBI and the Marshals have decided to make their joint-task force permanent. Alexa, reeling from her own traumatic past and her PTSD of hunting serial killers, has no choice: she will now have to work with an FBI partner she dislikes and hunt down serial killers whose jurisdiction intertwines with that of the U.S. Marshals. Alexa finds herself forced to confront the thing she dreads the most—entering a killer’s mind.

Butting heads with local authorities and with a third partner, Alexa is out of her depth and up against a range of obstacles in a foreign country—all while a diabolical killer is gaining steam. In her toughest case yet, Alexa will need all the strength of her brilliant mind to discover where the killer is hiding—and to bring him to justice before he strikes again.

Unless he finds her first.

A page-turning and harrowing crime thriller featuring a brilliant and tortured Deputy Marshal, the ALEXA CHASE series is a riveting mystery, packed with non-stop action, suspense, twists and turns, revelations, and driven by a breakneck pace that will keep you flipping pages late into the night.

A number of blond women previously having worn a red dress that attracted a killer. Halfway thru Alexa (formerly a profiler with FBI but now a US Marshall) has determined who the killer is and ends up chasing him to Europe.

Meanwhile there are forces at work that are having phone conversations about how to discredit Alexa and her FBI partner. Seems like a prelude to a future book.

The book is kind of all over the place and includes Alexa's worries about a 13yr old neighbor whose parents neglect her. Three story lines - the killer, the trio of phone voices plotting against her and the neighbor Stacey. Each of the stories are bare bones and not really fleshed out and my review like this book is all over the place.

2.5/5 stars rounded up to 3. I felt like I was just going through the motions as I read this. The formula just isn't different enough from one book to another to continuously hold my attention when read so close together. I'm starting to feel bored and numb, but I'm also so close to the end with only one more to go in the series that I keep going.

If not for reading these books for free, I probably would have stopped some time ago. I was pleased when the series deviated a little bit with plot in the previous installment, but it's gone back to just being the same as the others. It's actually everything else going on in this book besides the main plot that are of any interest. The cliffhanger which was actually quite enticing, a possible romance that has been slowly culminating for the last two books and a sub-plot that actually held my attention. Alexa finally losing control was an interesting look into her psyche and further develops her character, which is one of the brightest spots in this series.

The spelling and grammatical errors in here are irritating, since they have been present for the last THREE books which is... so lazy.

Is it fair to rate this based on how it is in comparison to the whole series rather than as if it were a stand alone? Perhaps not, but I feel like this isn't going to leave a lasting impression on anyone who's reading this as a stand alone, and being so late in the series, would be a bit more difficult to dive in to.

WOW. Okay another PHENOMENAL book in this absolutely breathtaking series.

STALEXA????? THE WAY HE HELD ONTO HER HAND? THE QUOTE ABOUT HIM ONLY SEEING HER AS GOOD? BRUHHH. THE WAY.. THE WAY I SHIP THEM SO MUCH.

Ok I was really worried for Stacy in this one.. like one of these books she’s gonna be a victim of something and I’m SO scared.

ALEXA IS SUCH A BADDIE THERES NO WAY SHES SO HOT. Ok now that we have that out of the way, can Drake die already? He’s been in ALL of these so far.. come on death row, start killing people and not let him rot for years on end when he needs to DIEE. He’s so sickening. Also he’s so scary.

This book made me even more scared of men ugh, the way the cousins were literally terrifying? THIS ALL COULD HAPPEN AND IT SCARES ME. I wish Alexa and Stu were my bodyguards because now I don’t feel safe when it’s nice enough to start taking walks again😭

Ok but it’s so disgusting that killers actually think this way. The aunt was terrible but couldn’t they just kill themselves instead of innocent women? When she laughed after he died that was iconic and kinda insane but slay auntie.

If Alexa and Stuart don’t have sex in the next one I’m done.

Also.. what the heck is with the senators and the FBI agency??? YOU ARE THE PPL WHO PUT STU AND LEXI ON THESE CASES AND NOW YOU WANT TO RUIN THEIR CAREERS?? It makes no sense. Idk why everything’s so corrupt even in books? Ugh. Also are we gonna find out what happened to Stu’s gf? I feel like that’s gonna be a twist or something that he was somehow involved and that’s how the senators ruin him? They probably won’t win, I hope they won’t, but the government is so corrupt who knows. Idk what’s going to happen next honestly.

Ok so I’m confused. It makes sense kind of for Stuart to be able to go overseas, but Alexa is a US MARSHAL. Emphasis on US. UNITED STATES. She shouldn’t be able to go to Germany, because the killer is technically killing in America and then runs off back to Germany so it should’ve been Germany’s problem. I mean, maybe US Marshall’s have this authority everywhere and I just didn’t know it but that confused me greatly.

AGHHH THIS WAS SO GOOD

I just don't get what's going on with this series. I was quite excited for this book hoping that this premise would be the shake up it needed after same pretty samey outings. Instead it feels like it barely gets going before it's over. The series already has quite a few hanging sub plots already I don't understand why we've added yet another that seems to be about federal budgets?

Flawed but exciting

This book needs some close proofreading. It’s just distracting enough to be annoying.
Worth reading regardless, I’m definitely hooked till the bitter end 😊

needs a good editor

I have enjoyed all of this series, so far. This book is good, but it needs editing…..extra words, misspellings, etc. Kinda ruins the enjoyment.

Feels like the series is running out of steam. I hated that they went to Europe, just felt random with how the rest of the series has been written.

More and more personal with each installment.
Some family drama, teenage angst, violence, childhood trauma, mystery,  and event intercontinental travel. Good thriller

Compelling fifth outing for Alexa and Stuart.

I think this may be the best instalment in the Alexa Chase series of books by Kate Bold. At least I found it very hard to put down and read it in a day - At the cost of other things I should have been attending to!
Another set of serial killings need investigating but now we encounter another deeply underlying plot which looks to have real threatens the recently flourishing joint task force that is Alexa and Stuart.
One which requires an extended wait for its resolution in the next book which is not released yet - I know what my next pre-order will be.
I enjoy most books written by Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, Mason Cross at al and now I have to add Kate Bold to my list of "get the next instalment when it comes out" authors.

Alexa is under stress, as she wants to have more of a personal life but at the same time, she does not want to slow down in working and solving cases. Even her partner believes she overdoes herself. She also looks after Stacy who needs her much more than she verbalizes. The case in this story takes the agent all over Europe, searching for the serial killer who leaves a trail of corpses behind, and she starts to doubt her capacity to solve this puzzle. Great story plot, characters are denser and more developed. The story grabs your attention from the beginning. I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
