One day the ordinary 2nd year high schooler Usami-kun accidentally encounters a big girl with a scary look. Turns out she's glaring at him, but why...!? Although Hitomi-chan looks like she's scary and awkward, she's actually a kind and adorable girl. This one shall be a happy, heartwarming slice-of-life comedy.
The winter season is upon us and that means… not exactly what you’re thinking. Not yet, at least. Still, between snowmen and fortune telling and getting locked in the storage room together (drink!), Hitomi and Usami are inching ever closer… but who has time for love when roasted sweet potatoes are out there?
The ebb and flow of trends in manga never ceases to fascinate me and the current crop of Outrageous Girl and Weenie Boy books is not precisely new, but it feels like they sure have increased of late.
This one is one of the least offensive ones, which means it has to distinguish itself in other ways and this volume continues the minimally service-y (well, in comparison) antics and the overly sweet developing romance between our two leads. Usami might be a touch dull, nothing new there, but he and Hitomi still make a cute couple.
But hey, who cares? If there’s one thing that really injects pure joy into my veins, it’s a good running gag and the absolutely stupid roasted sweet potatoes bit that keeps showing up throughout the volume and escalates more and more every single time had me in stitches. It’s so, so dumb, but the concept and execution are absolutely perfect.
The rest of the story hits the usual beats for our leads as the entire universe basically tries to tell them they should get together. It’s pretty charming as things keep happening that are clearly a cosmic sign and I was happy to see this notion brought back from previous volumes.
We also have a great stable of supporting characters now - the ridiculously cosplay-positive teacher makes several reappearances that just happen to allow for some fan service, and the gaggle of delinquents are still causing trouble, mainly for themselves.
There’s some of the requisite fan service of Hitomi’s abs again, courtesy of Kaoru, Usami’s sister, whose fetishizing leads to some real scheming on her part (good punchline to this one). Given the ridiculously high detail put into those particular drawings, it does feel like the mangaka might be using Kaoru as a mouthpiece just a smidgen.
If you haven’t enjoyed this series to this point, I doubt it’s going to win you over now. It ranges from utterly harmless to sweet to silly in equal measure but is just content to be an okay little book. The genuinely nice relationship between Hitomi and Usami is laid-back and their affection couldn’t be more obvious.
Sure, maybe things could move a little faster, but this is one story where I don’t even notice it because it’s simply breezy fun. That’s a rarer quality than I’d like sometimes and this is a great read when you don’t want a sweeping epic or another volume of I Sneezed Into A Salad Guard Wrong And Was Reborn As A Head of Lettuce With A Black Belt In Karate And A Ferrari or whatever other isekai is out there.
For me, I’d rather have a beatdown turn into an unsuspecting game of kick the can and for that to turn into another silly running gag. Or for a simple Christmas present to turn out to be just a cute little moment between two almost-more-than-friends. Or that other moment on the overlook… or…
3.5 stars - Roasted sweet potatoes nets this one the rounded up score because it’s just that much fun. The rest of it is pretty dang enjoyable too.
It's a good thing the characters are so likable and the tone lightly humorous because this series is nothing but a string of manga tropes with big boobs fan service.
Last volume the creator rushed through all the festivals, and this time, after accidentally getting locked in a room together, the characters zip through the winter tropes, having a snow day and celebrating Christmas and New Year's, setting us up for Valentine's Day and White Day next volume.
To keep up the cosplay trope, a teacher introduced last volume is now a recurring character who ensures all the rest of the characters always have season-appropriate costumes available.
And the latest trope: a transfer student is plopped into the story with the promise of shaking up the main characters' will-they-won't-they status quo.
At this point, the only thing more annoying than the tropes and fan service is the number of supporting characters who don't have names. But all those negatives are still outweighed by the sweet romance and silly jokes.
Hitomi is a straight up hottie. She's also very protective of her beloved Usa (lucky devil). She's got the body of a Greek goddess and a heart of gold. She will go to great lengths to spend time with her Usa. Not that he minds. He's got feelings of love budding for Hitomi. And everyone, especially Usa's sister, are determined to get these two together officially as a couple.
