**4.8/5 stars**🔥🥵 Pirates and steam!

I absolutely and thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me Pirates of the Caribbean vibes with a little sprinkle of Tom & Jerry, splashed with deceit, adventure and lust. Weird mix, I know, but it's the best way for me to describe it. It's not your typical erotica story, where the two main characters just fall in love at first sight; but an enemies to lovers so well done, it might actually be my favorite I've read so far.

Now why did I mention Tom & Jerry? Because Alister and Rosetta have a similar type of dynamic where they kept fighting, arguing, getting back at each other...which normally would have annoyed me, but it was just so fun to read, even with the tension between them.

“She looked wild. She looked fierce. Rosetta looked like a psychotic murderer as much as he did, and he felt his stomach clench in want for her.”

Let's start with Rosetta. She was a really strong, cunning and a badass heroine. I have to admit, I have a love-hate relationship with ''badass'' heroines. Sometimes, it feels like the author tried too hard to make them appear cool and strong that it almost feels forced, which makes me cringe and instantly dislike the character. With Rosetta, I was a little bit on the fence at first when she first appeared, I wasn't sure about the things she would do or say and I feared that I would dislike her. But then, the more I read, the more she grew on me. I liked her realism. She was strong, but in a witty way. She knew she couldn't compare to men's strength, so what did she do? She was cheatsy and tricky. She claimed to be a pirate and she acted like one, which is why she grew on me. In a way, she was a little bit similar to Captain Jack Sparrow.

“She’s a cunning piece of work and it’s obvious she’ll do just about anything to win.”-Alister

As for Alister, not much of his past is known and I think the second book will be focusing a little bit more on him. So as of now, he is fairly mysterious. Like all pirates, when he goes to ports, he takes women. But, in this book, they never even stop at a port. The only woman he interacts with is Rosetta and he lusts HARD for her, even if it's hard for him to admit it to himself. I suspect that he is developing feelings for her, as he becomes very possessive and protective of her, somewhat overbearing. Showing jealousy at times (even at the beginning when they were enemies), feeling irritated and grumpy. He is said and shown to be ruthless but he definitely has a soft spot for Rosetta who should fear him like everybody, but isn't scared one bit. I can't wait to learn more about his past.

“Good luck to the man that marries her,” Alister snorted. “Only a fool would take her on, and if he didn’t start out mad, she’d drive him there.”
👀

At the end of this book, Rosetta and Alister are still not a couple. They shared passion multiple times, and most likely are developing feelings for each other (still unclear but they do feel pangs and thuds in their guts when they feel rejected) but their relationship being complex, I didn't mind the fact the author is taking her time. Actually, I think I prefer it like that. They are still at a stage where they don't fully trust each other (being pirates and all) and I like how they are slowly changing from enemies to lovers.

I really can't wait to read the next book. When I saw all those 5 stars rating, I was wondering if the hype was exaggerated... But I have to say, I'm definitely ON BOARD ha! with them. This book was surprisingly good.

I really wanted to love this book.

Pros:
- The story was good, I was interested enough to continue. Especially towards the end of the book.
- I liked the characters and that they were somewhat realistic (i.e. the FMC realized she couldn't take on giant men with swords) directly and employed other methods. Relationships with the main characters and they're key people were developed.
- The spice was pretty good, and got better towards the end of the book, although there was a lot of use of the word "channel" during those scenes. Maybe it was an ocean joke? :)

Cons:
- This lovely author has a lot of creativity and talent, but needs a hard edit. I found the text just didn't flow and felt very first draft or amateur, to the point where I almost quit the book Multiple times (but the pros kept me going). Dialogue was stilted and felt awkward
- On the same thread, silly spelling mistakes (like I, captain, instead of Aye, and Munity instead of mutiny) started detracting. I usually gloss over the odd mistake but there was a lot that stood out.
- I would have loved some more world building, we find out about the world, in many cases just in passing or names and I want to know more about where we are and where we're going.

I'm glad it finished it, I want to know what happens next but I'm undecided if I'll read the second book.

Ok, you may not have known…but you need pirate smut in your life. Specifically…this pirate smut. 🏴‍☠️ 🥵 But seriously, Captain Jack and Elizabeth Swan were ROBBED in Pirates of the Caribbean. If you were always on that ship…Sea of Roses DELIVERS. Captain Alister…*swoons*. The plot twists…the smut🥵…the story💜. I love this. I can’t wait for the next one.

I loved this book so much. I hadn’t read a pirate book in some 15 years or so. Was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. There is no way to tell what Rosette is after for a long time which kept me interested and reading. Absolutely adore Captain Alister Paine. So wonderful. He stayed true to character all the way through and I cannot wait until the next one 🥰🥰

So I picked this up on KU, planning on skim-reading some pirate smut 😈 and I got sucked right into the story. It wasn’t in the same class as my favorite pirate romance/erotica/fiction, Sea of Ruin, Across a Moonlit Sea, The Devil's Luck, but it was really entertaining, captured my interest, and I’m considering reading the second part of the duology.

And the smut I came for? Damn but my timbers were shivered thoroughly and often 🥵🔥🥵

Instead of killing her, he was near desperate to feel her glove his cock. Instead of punishing her, he wanted to take her, then have her pining for him when he was done with her. Instead of hating her for her devious, tricky, dishonest nature, he desired her for it. He needed to see how she’d unfold at the mercy of his hips – and he was unwilling to be benevolent.

How badly had she needed this? Take it, she begged, gritting her teeth. Please, just give it to me. Those feral, guttural sounds he was making added to everything – the warmth of his body against her own, the press of firm, large muscles cushioning her. Feels so fucking good. It was too much. She needed him to stop, yet she was desperate for this to never end so she could feel it forever. It was torture, and it was perfect.

Gotta love a badass pirate, but when the badass pirate is a woman? Chef’s kiss…

”I won’t let you ruin how I’m feeling, Alister. I have waited three years to put a bullet in that man’s skull, and even longer to be free of him.” Rosetta walked to the desk at the back of the room, flipping open a tiny chest to go through letters. “You can either fuck me or get the fuck off my ship.”

Damnit, he wanted her. He wanted this more than he was willing to admit. She was like the sea – dangerous, chaotic, wild – and not once had he ever turned his back on it. Not once had he ever not wanted to ride it, just like he ached to ride her.

REVIEW

Rating: 4/5
POV: 1st, Dual
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers; Rivals; Pirates; Historical (earlys 1700s); A play on Colleague's Trope; Class Difference; Disfigured MC (MMC)
Heat Level: 4/5
Kinks: N/A

Likes:
* The FMC! What a freaking badass! Seriously goes into a non existent top 10 list of FMCs for me lol.
* The setting - it was enjoyable to read a rarer time period of early 1700s and for the whole book to be out at sea!
* The side characters - both captains had great side characters to help make this story an even better one

Dislikes:
* The writing did have some faults. Our MMC is supposed to be extremely scary and this major killer and yet all his internal thoughts are not . If that makes sense? Idk he was just not meeting the image he was supposed to portray. I think he really needed to be shown as more of a mean guy and he wasn't.

Conclusion:
This is a really good historical pirates book! Both of our MC's are Pirates. Captains of their own ships! The story shows many times how much of a badass Rosetta (FMC) is. She also shows us multiple times just how stupid men can be compared to a woman's whit and it was extremely enjoyable lol.

What lacked for me with the story was that the MMCs character. I think it was that the author wrote him to be a mean, alpha, scary MMC, yet she failed to write him like that as well.

The story had a lot of emotional moments but also a lot of really funny moments too. I really did enjoy this overall and will finish this duology. It does end on a cliffhanger, of course, but not one that makes you want to throw your book/kindle against the wall.

Some good quotes:
"Beautiful clear skies, tranquil rolling waves, and strong steady winds to fill his sails- what a perfect day to get completely fucked over" LOL

"Eat, Mr Paine. I will not be feeding you again."
"Don't call me that," he demanded, turning his head back to her with gritted teeth. "My name is Captain Alister."
"A person must have a ship to be a captain, and currently, you don't own one." Her smile was sweet, but her words cut with lethal venom.

4/5

4 stars!

I'm surprised this series hasn't gotten as much traction compared to her other series because this was great! The last time I enjoyed a pirate romance was the Daughter of the Pirate King duology (hated the other 2 super hyped pirate series I read last year). I was really worried I wasn't going to like both the MMC and FMC especially with how they were in the beginning, but they ended up having a pretty good amount of depth to them. Rosetta in particular I thought was going to be the standard "badass" FMC who would be all talk and no show, but she was actually a likeable bad bitch. Alistair seems like the standard raging alpha male, but there's definitely a softer side and more vulnerable side to him that we'll probably see in the next book (this book revealed more of Rosetta's past). I also appreciate that they actually acted like pirates in the fact that they are truly ruthless to each other and basically anyone who has wronged them. They only really warm up to each other very gradually and even by the end of the book they're still kind of in a situationship so while they were together a lot physically, I enjoy the emotional slow burn. Moving on to the next book ASAP!

I liked the characters and the story but I definitely had some issues with this book. I wish I could have given it more stars but the things I struggled with I just couldn’t ignore. This book read more like a draft that needed revised and I think with some edits could be an even better story.

Pros:
-the characters. I love all the characters.
-the story. I love a good pirate story.
-the banter between the characters was fun.

Cons:
-the writing. It was long winded and really took away from a great story. Why explain for over half a page how a character looked stern?
-the definitions. I understand that some people might not know what the nautical terminology might mean but the way it was explained in the book really hindered the flow of the book. There were also multiple times the same term was explained in depth. Put a glossary at the back to keep the story from being so choppy.
-the world building. I wish there was more work put into the world. Or maybe a map. There will randomly be the name of a city/island/port thrown in but that’s it.

I imagine plenty of people could gobble this up because it reads like Disney fanfiction. That vibe makes the couple's antics feel silly and juvenile though. Another reviewer mentioned it's like "Tom and Jerry," and the predictable tricks/gags only reinforce that comparison. This is a fun, light read, and I could see myself enjoying this on another day, but not today. DNF "It's not you it's me" I swear! 😩

(Review for both books)

4.5 stars ✨

• Two rival pirate captains: she steals his ship; he wants revenge. The plot sets the perfect scene for a romance to bloom between them.
• Rivals to partners-with-benefits to lovers
• Slowburn romance. The way their relationship went from it being no more than just about having fun to them developing feelings was chef’s kiss.
• Heroine with a backbone. She has worked to get to where she is, and won’t let anyone bring her down.
• Scarred hero with a soft side (but only for her)

I don't think there was anything really wrong with this book. I just don't think I was the right audience for it. This book has helped me come to the conclusion that pirate romances are just not for me. I did like the writing I just didn't really care about the storyline. I did only like one character out of this book though and that was Rosetta. Alistair was an okay character I just didn't really like him that much. It was nice to see the woman take charge for once because most of the romance novels I read it's always the guy taking charge. I think that's why I really liked Rosetta because she knew what she wanted and she was going to go after it no matter what. If you are a fan of pirate romances I think this one would be a good one to try and you should definitely give it a chance.

Omg yaaas I finally finished it didn’t think was going to but I did I totally loved the characters personalities and quirks especially the main character I hated tho Mr smith died whyyyy he didn’t have to die 😭😭😭I hate tho how allister always comes to quick conclusions about her especially in the end for gods sakes man have at least a little faith in the girl

Captain Alister Paine is one of the most ruthless pirates out there, and he doesn’t put up with anyone’s B.S. So when he loses his ship to a female pirate captain, he’s rightfully pissed. But Captain Rosetta Silver is different than he expects, and she infuriates him to no end. He wants to punish her, dominate her… yet somehow, he ends up wanting her as well. But Rosetta is not what she seems, and her secrets may destroy the new and fragile relationship they’ve forged.

Oh. My. Gosh. This book was so freaking good!!! I didn’t even know that this was what I needed, but somehow, it checks all my boxes and then some!!! Reyne’s style of writing is witty, fast paced, and oh so smutty… and I loved it!!! Plus, the plot is absolutely spectacular. I enjoyed all the banter, the drama, the angst… you need this pirate romance in your life!!!!

Alister. He’s bloodthirsty, angry, and bitter, which makes him a hell of a pirate. I really enjoyed his POV and the way he interacted with his men. Rosetta. She’s the perfect FMC!!! She’s bold, savvy, and willing to fight for what she believes in. She’s not afraid to stand up for herself, and I love her sarcastic nature. Alister and Rosetta’s chemistry could light the room on fire, and I enjoyed their verbal sparring. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!

I devoured this book within a couple hours. I just love any book with a witty and cunning FMC.
I’ve been searching for a good pirate book and this had everything I wanted!
The FMC isn’t a Mary-sue badass. She knows her strengths and weaknesses and I appreciated it.
The MMC didn’t turn out to be Insta-lusty as I thought he would be. Like he legit didn’t like the chick for stealing his ship.
The cat and mouse game was fun between the two. I appreciated how much research and insight went into the logistics of the sailing aspects.
The twist at the end actually surprised me too.
I thought the book could’ve ended nicely, so I’m somewhat curious what the second book will be about.

This book does need a better edit though. There were lots of typos.

The spicy scenes were spicy and fun, but I feel like it got a bit much and too frequent in the end? But the scene with the COINS?!? One of my top favorite sex scenes now. I’m just disappointed that she didn’t take more charge and I was hoping for a sexually dominant FMC.

Anyways. 5 star for me! And on to book 2!

alas, dnf'd at 10%

I really wanted to like the book, and I loved the premise and the whole concept, but I felt like the story was choppy and straight up confusing at places. I couldn't really understand half of the scenes due to the abundance of pronouns. When you have four male characters in the scene, a random 'he' will give me nothing.

I would love to read a book with a similar plot, but the author was not eloquent enough to keep me interested., which is truly a shame, I really wanted to get into the book.

I,actually, really liked the story, my first time for reading a pirate-trope-book. I adored the MMC and the FMC. Also I think it could be improved a bit more- am not talking about the characters I like the way we can see almost all the backgrounds, it’s just text didn't flow and felt very amateur. It feels like the writer just published her first draft, this story needs a good editing.
On the other hand I am on my way for the 2nd book! For everyone, give it a try!

This was such an enjoyable surprise! I don’t even remember how I stumbled across this little duology, but I have been itching for some pirates and adored this story! All the characters were likable, and I love the cat and mouse energy between the FMC and MMC since they felt evenly matched. I found myself laughing a lot, and even though it was decently fast paced with lots of action, sea shanties, and rum… it also gave a lot of fun, cozy vibes with plenty of spice.

I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint! The ratio of pirate adventure and smut was spot on, never leaving you wanting more of one or the other. The characters are strong and don’t mess around. I enjoyed the mystery around their motives and the unique connection they form. This is by no means a typical love story and it was refreshing to read.

It's been a good long while since I've read a pirate trope, and this book delivered. The love/hate relationship between Alister and Rosetta definitely keep you turning the pages. The sexual chemistry between them; hot, hot, hot. This was entertaining, and many of the secondary characters also kept the story going.
