Love Unexpected #2

Filthy Bromance

Rate this book
It’s totally normal for two straight guys to do this when they’re alone, right?

That’s what I keep telling myself after I meet Reggie.
I’m a pro tennis player, and I usually spend my life on the court. But an embarrassing injury in the middle of the US Open sidelined my career, landing me in the hands of my new athletic trainer.
Reggie is a big old jock with an easy smile, and my grumpy butt has never met anyone like him.

We start hanging—at the gym and at his place, on the tennis court and out at the bar.
I haven’t had a real friend in years, and Reggie’s big heart warms me deep inside.
He finds something I’ve tried to keep buried, and when we end up sweaty in a hotel bed one night, my world turns upside down.

Then comes the cabin weekend, and all the long massages at the gym…
Reggie gets his big hands all over me, and I can’t stop thinking about him.

It’s chill, though, because we’re a couple of straight guys, and this is just a bromance.
A sweaty, grunty, sticky bromance.
It can’t be more than that, not with my tennis career waiting—
and no matter what my heart insists.

Filthy Bromance is a friends-to-lovers romance with a grumpy tennis star, his big-hearted athletic trainer, and a mess of unexpected feelings. It features dirty talk and exploration on the way to a well-earned HEA. Book two of Love Unexpected, it can be enjoyed as a standalone or read along with the series.

A sweet, steamy and low angst double bi-discovery? Yes. Please. Give. It. To. Me. This one had a lot of things I love in books, it just didn’t really work for me, sadly.

Brief summary
Everett has a broken tailbone and he needs an athletic trainer so he can go back to being healthy so he can play Tennis. He’s only 23 and is just starting his profesionnal career. His athletic trainer turns out to be Reggie. They both thought they were straight but they’re attracted to each other and they end up being friends, but instead of just staying friends, they fall in love with each other.

First, I really enjoyed how Everett seemed to be so lost and he didn’t know what he wanted in his life. He’s young and he never knew anything else other than Tennis and he thought that it’s the only thing he had in life (his parents died when he was 16 and he feels alone since then) and he clung to Tennis because he didn’t know what else he could do in life, which felt so realistic to me. Also, I loved how Everett discovered that he can have more in life, like love, it was so sweet and heartwhelming.

Second, the double bi-discovery trope is one that is hard to pull (both Reggie and Everett thought they were straight before they met) but it was super well done here. I liked how they both were instantly attracted to each other and they didn’t know why but they just were and they didn’t know what to do about it. I liked how they were in denial at first and saying how they were just friends when they were more than that, but they both didn’t want to admit, it felt so realistic. The bi-discovery had a really good progression and felt very realistic to me, I enjoyed it, a lot. Also the sex scenes were hot and I enjoyed them.

Third, I really liked the chemestry between Reggie and Evrett, they had a really good banter and they complimented each other very nicely. They were really good together and were super supportive of each other, which I really enjoyed. Also I loved how they became friends first and they spent a lot of the book being friends, before they got together, it really helped to establish their chemestry and it made the transition from friends to lovers very smooth.

Fourth, now comes the part I enjoyed less. I didn’t like how Reggie was always pushing Everett for things that Evrett didn’t like. Evrett kept saying how he didn’t like public attention yet Reggie always wanted that, which I felt disrespectful to Everett, because he said he didn’t want that and how it made him uncomfortable. Also I didn’t like how Everett felt a little like he had to come out just so he could keep Reggie, thats just not a trope I enjoy in books. Coming out should be on your own terms, not because you don’t want to lose your partner. Also, this book was just not made for me. This book read exactly like an Hallmark movie, with a cheesy romance, some very dramatic scenes and some dramatic public love declaration scenes. Which are things I just don’t really enjoy in books. So this one is on me, I’m just not the right audience for this book and I really wish I enjoyed it more than I did because it had a lot of things I love in books.

I didn’t love this book as much as I wanted to but it still had things I really enjoyed about it and I had a good time reading it.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

Jan 2025 - 5 stars

On the 3rd read, I've decided that this is, in fact, a 5 star read for me. I find the characters so real and engaging, and just love their romance.

June 2024 - 4 stars

I've been re-reading a lot of easy contemporary reads lately, and this really hit the spot. It's fun, totally OTT, but has enough emotionally impactful scenes for it not to be shallow. Reggie is such an absolute sweetheart, and I really feel for Everett's struggles to accept himself and manage his work-life balance.

Feb 2024 - 4 stars

Denial meets oblivious.

This was so ridiculous and funny; it was great and perfectly fit the mood I was looking for.

So they are both definitely having not-so-straight thoughts right from the start, and there are a number of hilarious and improbable trope-ful situations before anything conclusive happens: massage hard-on, naked sauna hard-on, only-one-bed and oh-no-the-heater-is-broken-we’re-going-to-have-to-take-our-clothes-off, … you get the picture. It’s very trope-y.

They embark on a friends-only mutual-masturbation arrangement and when Reggie reveals to his brother and friend that he’s maybe having feelings for Everett, we get this gem:

“We would never think of prematurely outing you to your straight jerk off buddy, don't worry Reggie.”

But in the background of this ridiculousness is some somewhat more serious soul-searching, a really sweet friendship blooming between two lonely men, and a struggle coming out while being a recently-humiliated somewhat-public-figure.

I actually found this really enjoyable, and would definitely recommend it for people who enjoy lighthearted stories with obliviots.

Cute enough. Very easy read. Very bro-y. Like mild romance bro-y. I did find the dual bisexual discovery very well done.

I’m just wondering if this author has ever had anal sex? I know in MM romance you’re suspending belief a bit, but first time anal penetration with ANYTHING, never mind a HUGE cock, and it just takes two fingers after a rimjob? Okay 🙄 Plus no pain? Yeah right.

I skimmed most of this hoping I would feel something for either of these two men but I just didn’t. Im not even sure if I liked either of them. I will certainly be avoiding anything with the word “bromance” in the title from now on. It was way too “bro” for me.

i love how reggie compulsively talks about everett at every second when he’s with owen and fox and he doesn’t even realize it🤭 and i’m obsessed with the fact that all the food fox showed reggie how to cook for future girlfriends/family, reggie cooks for everett instinctually……ugh reggie is just so fucking dumb and goofy….just heart eyes every time he does anything…..i love that he’s just absolutely bursting at the seams with love and affection for !!!!his guy!!!!….like he’s losing his MIND bc he can’t confess his undying love for everett….as soon as he realizes his feelings, he’s like i can’t hold it in, i have to tell him now!!!!!!!🤭🤭 but some of the dialogue is weird (he calls him tennis stud in bed btw😭) and why do they constantly say each other’s names in every sentence ???? and ugh so much jerking off/handjobs and no fucking fucking until 95% and even that was ehh ???? sick and twisted!!!!! also the tennis plot, i have to laugh💀💀💀💀 bc technically it’s a main part of the book but it’s also just described like a little he won here and a little he went to a tournament there…..it’s like the author is trying to write as little as possible about the tennis side of things to get back to the main event aka reggie and everett doing literally anything together…..and i just have to applaud her ability to make this the least sporty sports book while also managing to make it the most jock bro sports are life book💀💀💀 this book is so unserious and stupid and silly and i love that i can just turn my brain off and read….3.5 stars, vibes only

What a sweet, fun, slightly ridiculous, and spicy read.

I really think this author was trying to be goofy and have fun. If you go into this looking for a serious story you will be disappointed. It’s the epitome of low angst, especially for a double bi-awakening where one MC feels the need to hide because he’s trying to become a tennis pro and has internalized homophobia from his dead father/coach. How did this author even do that? It should have been so intense, but instead it was just a cute love story.

These gloomy/sunshine vibes were excellent. One MC is basically a golden retriever in human form and it’s the best. Obviously, he’s the character that’s meant to represent what the world could be and I’m so here for it. It took me a minute to realize this all and I was totally prepared to give a lower rating until I just let my expectations go an enjoyed it. It was so worth it too because the last 20% of this book was so solid. It became just a bit more serious and that worked too. Reggie was the loyal, supportive, and patient man Everett needed and it worked out exactly how it should have.

If you was a low angst book that’s hot and will also make you giggle, then this one is definitely for you.

I had a lot of fun reading this book, I definitely recommend it

It's a story of two straight guys that meet and they instantly connect. Its friendship at first sight haha
But then.. well.. as they become closer, things get complicated and their "bromance" it's not quite so straight anymore
But they are SO decided to ignore reality and pretend that even if their friendship is not that "normal" it is still just friendship (it's a filthy Bromance Ha! 😆), so we get some hard denial from both MCs
Ohh but when they decide to stop ignoring their true feelings and just be together.. ahh it's so good

The premise of this book, as I understand, is to be a light, fun, steamy book, friends to lovers, straight guys turned gay for each other, involved in "a filthy bromance" but the book goes deeper than that.

We get great character development, the MCs deal with lots of complicated stuff, like homophobia in general and particularly homophobia in professional sports, sense of inadequacy, lonelyness, financial worries, anxiety about the future, MC that lose his parents when he was really young, abusive parents etc.. but all of that is dealt with still in a light way, the book doesn't get like super heavy, the story still mainly revolves around their filthy bromance 😄
and one of the MCs is an athlete, recently injured, and the book revolves around him trying to get back in top form, so we get the angst related to his situation too

And their friendship is so good, they are so supportive of each other, its delicious to see lonely Everett blossom under Reggie's love, attention and care

The MCs are really lovely, and sooooo charismatic, I managed to care deeply about them right away, and their chemistry together if ow! over the roof

Also Reggie is the biggest himbo, tell me if I am not right

(There were some cringe dialogues too, I confess, that got me saying "oh honey" haha and sometimes I thought the MCs were a little too immature for their age)

Overall, this was a delicious read

Tropes: age gap, friends to lovers, grumpy/sunshine
Feels: 4/5
Steam*: 3.5/5
Kinks: this kind of fetishized "straight bros" hooking up, so counting that
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks: internalized homophobia, campy sex scenes

Everett is 23, a professional tennis player but low in ranks, getting started at making a name for himself after years of work. He was orphaned at 16 and has been working towards this dream since then. He gets injured in a stupid moment. And has to take some time off and get treatment. He hires Reggie as his athletic trainer

Reggie is 32 and a huge guy, but an absolute teddy bear of a guy. His brother has recently gotten engaged to Reggie's best friend and he's feeling a little lonely. Reggie just wants friends and love, he's big, but he's a softie. He develops a man crush on Everett and they start hanging out all the time outside of work as friends. They get drunk one night and jerk off together. They talk about it and then they keep doing it. And they make excuses to hang out together. And Everett wants to drag Reggie along to his games as he returns to playing. But are they in the right stages of their lives to align and make this work when Everett is under pressure and may not be willing to come out as bi?

Initially I was tempted to rank this a little lower because of the quite cheesy and somewhat fetishized "2 straight guys getting off together" stuff. It was campy. But, Reggie was a teddy bear of a guy, he was so genuine and such a cheerleader for Everett which was nice. And Owen and Fox's reactions to Reggie's bi-awakening were amazing. It was hilarious to see the evolution of their understanding of Everett and Reggie's relationship. Their initial thoughts that this was friendship evolved to hilarious side eyeing Reggie in disbelief, pointing out that he should be making the connection that this is not straight feelings, talking him down from moving too fast and tanking his relationship, and being incredibly supportive. Loved that. And Everett had depth to his character.

Some notable moments:

"Everett shakes his head. “What? No, man. Fuck. It’s not that.” He shakes his head, grunting to himself, and his neck goes tense. “Fuck, Reggie. I just don’t know how to be around this…” He trails off. “Gay people?” “No. This!” he says again, waving his hand. “Happy people being nice to each other. Family shit. People planning weddings and talking about childhood stories and making dinner and happy cabin shit that I don’t know how to do.” Everett’s voice almost breaks, and he finally looks away. “Shit. I’m sorry. I’m drunk.”"

"Fox blinks. “Excuse me, what now?” “Not like how I touch him for work,” I say quickly. “That’s purely professional. But I just sometimes catch myself thinking about how it would feel to touch him and the way he smells and stuff like that. I’m not ashamed to admit it.” Owen and Fox look at each other. Then they both turn back to me. “Uh, Reggie?” Owen says gently. I hear my own words, and yeah, it does sound like that. “Oh, shit,” I say, then slap my forehead. “Oh, wow. Am I bi-curious?”"

"Reggie couldn’t handle leaving without watching me play, but he knew it would mess with my game if he attended, so he went and got himself a costume this morning and hid out in the cheap seats. A laugh escapes me, dragging the air out of my lungs. Even when I sink to my lowest low, Reggie makes me light again."

*FYI, I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink."

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a gay for you book where both guys were straight at the beginning but then fell in love. This was sweet AND super HOT.

Reggie is Owens brother from book 1 in this series. Reggie is a fitness trainer and he meets Everett to help him recover from an injury. These characters had instant chemistry. The slow burn to love was perfect. There are some seriously HOT scenes in here! WOW!

Both struggled with their feelings and admitting their new found sexuality. Everything works out though. The HEA was just what you wanted. Loved it!

I was going through a fairly long reading slump and I really wanted to read everything but I just had a hard time sitting down to read, I remember reading the blurb of this book and thinking I love everything I'm reading and as soon as it came out I knew I should read it, not only I just got rid of the horrendous reading slump that I had but this book completely surprised me, I had never read this author and she writes the way I like and everything I like, I met a very tender friends to lovers and some Spicy scenes quite spicy, I definitely recommend it and I will be on the lookout to read this author again asap.

I completely adore books where both the MCs think they are straight in the beginning and then fall in love. This was a wonderful book with amazing characters! Reggie and Everett had off the charts chemistry! They struggled with their feelings at first, not understanding why they are now attracted to the same sex but once they gave in to what they are feeling and love they have for each other they got their beautiful happily ever after! This is an amazing series!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is SO sweet and fluffy that you almost get a heart attack when it also includes a sweat kink and donkey dick allegations.

Not my words, I swear to God. But his fat(donkey) dick is mentioned often enough that I figure the least I can do is feature it prominently in my review.

AND create a tag for it.

They're also really horny.

“Jury duty. March Madness. Funerals. Doesn’t matter. You need that ass eaten, you call me.”

And deeply committed to the bit(where as long as you say you're straight, then it doesn't matter if what you're doing is really, genuinely, authentically gay)

“We would never think of prematurely outing you as bi-curious to your straight jerkoff buddy,”

Just two bros being bros, you know? This one was slightly better than the first but not by much. And still with this obsession with the word “meaty” as not only an acceptable, but supposed sexy, descriptor of a penis. I’m tired lol. Overall rating: Eh. 2.5 Meaty Stars.
Only for Reggie bc he was so fucking goofy you couldn’t not love him.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

This is a fun and frolicking bromance that starts platonic, but gets more and more physical as Reggie and Everett spend time together. I really love Reggie, who is the most agreeable character I’ve read in a long time. He’s so devoted to his brother, and Everett, and I really enjoyed his character growth. It was totally joyful when he got his absolute happy ending. Everett was a little tougher to connect to, I think because he was such a lone wolf. His family trauma left deep scars that pushed him to move in ways that sometimes made him less likable, but he definitely redeemed himself, after contemplating the loveless, friendless existence his recalcitrance was leading him toward.

2.5 rounded up to 3. This book was alright. I liked Reggie’s character a lot, and I feel like if the book was written a little differently or had a more compelling storyline, I would have really liked it. It passed the time and kept me entertained for the most part, although I found myself skimming a lot.

Very low angst (which is not fave; I LOVE angst, what can I say?) Side note: I found a lot of the dialogue and dirty talk to be kind of cringey.

Not as great as the first one, but a solid entry. I'll definitely continue on with R. Cayden's works to see how they pan out. The narrators did a better job of making the voices more similar (I assume they listened to book one and realized how differently they were doing the narration.) Still Javi Wilder is superior and could have done this solo with zero complaints.

And it was nice to read a Tennis Sports themed mm book!

So much better than the first book

I’d give it ten stars if I could.

Grumpy/sunshine
Hurt/comfort
A big cinnamon roll of a man
Double bi-awakening
So hot it will melt your kindle.
But also all the feels.

Just read it. It’s like *really* good.

3.5 stars. Sweet, gay-for-you romance featuring Reggie, Owen’s himbo brother from book 1 and Everett, an uptight up-and-coming tennis star. Lots of ‘is this gay? this is totally not gay’, which was kind of hilarious, but also it was pretty hot. It was a quick, entertaining read.
