The Russian Bear is still up to his old tricks of intimidation and oppression. The victim? The newly independent country of the Ukraine, which lies on the Black Sea, long considered by the Russians as their lake.
We’re on the brink of war and the Pentagon needs covert local intelligence. It’s a job for the nuclear hunter-killer submarine USS New York City.
Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is intent on flooding into the Mediterranean to face the United States Sixth Fleet. USS NYC is the tripwire and first line of defense. For her Weapons Officer, Lieutenant Commander Nathan Blake, this is the patrol from hell.
Ukraine’s secret weapon is young spy Yana Borisova. Nathan finds himself drawn into her fight, ashore in a foreign land and under the sea. But Yana has another agenda.
Stood alone against the Black Sea Fleet is one submarine, one man, and his vow: ‘They shall not pass.’ Stand with Nathan onboard the USS New York City as he faces the Black Sea Horde.
Stephen Makk is the author of 20 books, including the bestselling USS Stonewall Jackson Series and The Tom Hilton Series. He mainly writes thrillers about technology and the military, with hints of romance. His protagonists are male and female, playing the imperfect hands they’re dealt.
How to write like a Makk… Take the mind of a fish, any fish (he’s an experienced diver). Add an engineer, simmer for years. Sprinkle on liberal helpings of strategist, astronomer, historian and anthropologist. Bring to the boil and let loose. You need some Makk on your bookshelf!
I think the book would have been an excellent story and I was intrigued by the beginning, but once again here is an author who seems to have such limited skill in writing or such a limited vocabulary, that inappropriate language is what he falls into.
I wish that the descriptions would post a warning about language and sexual content. It would save me time starting a book I cannot finish and avoid negative reviews for the author.
This review is based on the audiobook. I found this story to be what I imagine a real insight to submarine life especially during battle conditions. Very well written and good clear descriptions of personnel and weapons onboard the ship. Superb story and the narrator is tremendous, he really brings this story to life, I found myself holding my breathe when the captain orders, äll quiet¨ you are aboard and part of the action. I received this audio book from www.audiobooksunleashed.com and wanted to give an honest review.
High tech, lots of luck and using ancient history.....
An exciting read of espionage, sea battles, spies, and..... Well, read this book and find out the rest ! Its interesting that this book was printed in 2014 and speaks of the Russian military attacking the Ukraine after having taken over the Crimea ! Perhaps not so surprising after all as Russia has always wanted the Ukraine back and will do whatever it takes to do that; both in this book and in real life. Enjoy !!
A bit unrealistic, but a fast moving USN success story. I didn’t like the brutal details and language the author used to describe the sexual torture of the female spy. This is the same in Oliver Cromwell. Reading this I wondered if the author somehow enjoyed writing this brutal detail?
They should state in the preview of the book that it has a large amount of vulgarity and explicit sex description. The naval action was extremely good, but was offset and eventually I stopped reading due to the overuse of sexual activities.
SM. has. penned a new submarine thriller about the USSN New York City. The NYC has been ordered into the Black Sea to assist the Ukranian's Army. The is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Another in the series .... Keeps getting better. My only criticism is that since I don't read Russian, I really don't need to see a message on Russian before getting it in English. That just builds the word-count without adding to the plot.
Fun action without holding back because of political correctness. I like the entire series so far. Like a western good guys win plus a little sex tossed in. Just a little.
Like the basic plot and story. But did not care for all the explicit sex activity. In fact I almost closed the book due to that. Can do without it and still tell a good adventure. If the rest of the series has all this "extra" so called adventure, not sure how far I'll get in the rest of the books.
The fast paced submarine encounters will keep you guessing. Believing that we would start a shooting war in this scenario was difficult to buy. But it did make for an exciting read and interesting tactics for the combat sequences. 😎
