Ex Machina meets 2001: A Space Odyssey.

He’s an astronaut from the Republic of Antarctica; she’s a young Swiss woman killed in an accident. On a cold, faraway world they are about to make discoveries that could change humanity…

A marvel of genetic engineering: Maya is now a human/artificial intelligence hybrid, her cerebral cortex infused into her circuitry. But she struggles to reconcile who she was with what she is now.

After crossing the void of space, Maya and Te Ariki take an exploration walk on a cold, faraway world. With the help of scientists at CERN, they uncover revelations about human origins from deep in the mists of time, fusing past, present and future. Will they handle the shock of first contact with aliens?

Maya and Te Ariki are a space exploration team, nothing more, until life makes the simple complex. Will Maya find an answer to her own dilemma? Will she and Te Ariki discover the truth about humanity at last? Perhaps the truth is inside us all, and death isn’t really the end.

If you’ve ever wondered about our origins and evolution, our place in the universe, or ever looked up into the night sky in awe, come for a walk on a cold, faraway world.

Stephen Makk is the author of 20 books, including the bestselling USS Stonewall Jackson Series and The Tom Hilton Series. He mainly writes thrillers about technology and the military, with hints of romance. His protagonists are male and female, playing the imperfect hands they’re dealt.

How to write like a Makk… Take the mind of a fish, any fish (he’s an experienced diver). Add an engineer, simmer for years. Sprinkle on liberal helpings of strategist, astronomer, historian and anthropologist. Bring to the boil and let loose. You need some Makk on your bookshelf!

What I didn’t like and why I almost gave it 2 stars:
The digital version is filled with typographical errors which made it difficult to read at times. My kingdom for a comma! There were redundancies in the story telling, sometimes word for word passages repeated. The treatment of women leaves something to be desired. Women do hold high ranks in science and politics, but they almost all at some point are looked at as just the object of a man’s desire. This did not add anything to character or hold any real relevance to the story advancement.
Why I gave it three: the world building is imaginative and well thought out. There are multiple storylines happening at once and they all intertwine nicely. The end, though. The very end of the book was unexpected and sealed the three star fate. No spoilers. Don’t skip ahead and read the last page before you are finished. Let it be a surprise.

Borders on 2-Stars; 3-Stars is Generous

What to say about this book? It starts off with several broken angles that deliberately make no sense. Then, the story begins in a round-about way, with the central character an Antarctic Casanova. Then, some plausible SciFi occurs, interweaved with a back-and-forth snipe hunt that goes in multiple directions. The final sections of this story seem to also go off in a different direction, striking out from the previous story — seeming like The Author simply needed a way to end the book. AFTER the story has been completed, The Author then rambles on and on and on about many different philosophies.
