Strange things are happening in this small college town.
Earthquakes occurring nowhere near a fault line. Freak rainstorms when the sky was just clear blue. Winds strong enough to drag people through the trees. Fires that blow out like candles… And it always seems to happen when one of THEM is around.
Cade. Holden. Chase.
Each one is sinfully sexy. Each one is interested in me for different reasons. And each one holds a secret that could get us all killed.
Secrets are hard to keep. But are they really worth dying for?
* Based on The Essential Elements Series by Elle Middaugh. ** The Essential Elements Remix retells Val's story with a more mature, Reverse Harem twist! Some things are the same, but many things are different. If you—like me—feel that heroines shouldn't have to choose just one guy… then this series is for you!
Secrets and Sins by Elle Middaugh is the first book the Essential Elements Remix, and based on the Elemental Secrets book.
After Valerie returns back to live with her aunt, strange things relating to the elements begin happening. With secrets hidden all around her and battles building between the elements - Earth, Wind, Water and Fire, Valerie is on a mission to discover what is occurring and who are involved.
The characters and emotions are well written and expressed throughout the story, and the tweaks made to the overall storyline and characters from the original story, has built the book up. Changing the story to reverse harem also makes the book fall in line with Elle Middaugh’s other books, which are also under this sub-genre of books.
I went into this one knowing a little bit from the original series. Not much sweetness in the romance department. Valerie and her family's backstory is very interesting. I love the different factions. Her guys in her RH are each different and don't always get along. Story is steady paced with some action.
I started this book with no knowledge of her Essential Elements series. I've never read the books, so I couldn't draw comparisons, but now I don't know if I ever can.
This RH remix blew my mind away, and now I can't think about Val choosing only one of the guys. They all have the problems, and I don't always like them, but they have to be together. All of them. There is no other option.
Lately, I've been reading a lot of new-to-me authors and Elle Middaugh is one of them. The first book in her Essential Elements Remix series, Secrets and Sins, is the first book I've ever read by her and I highly enjoyed it. It's no wonder with a main character that's a little nerdy, a little bit sassy, and a whole lot of awkward, not to mention all the elemental magic, how could I not love this reverse harem?
Characters
Valerie "Val" I the main character and she's a socially awkward loner. She a navy brat who didn't really form relationships but she is sassy, quick-witted, and good at comebacks. A lot about her is a conundrum she seems to be an introvert but does extrovert activities except loner style. Val does reconnect with a friend from the past and with her and the guys she gets drawn out of her shell. But when strange things start happening she wants answers and that stubborn streak in her isn't giving up until she gets them.
This take on a harem is a little different because Val knew all the from high school. Apparently, she reconnects with a lot of people from high school in college and there are three that she immediately connects to. First is Holden who is a puppy. He is possessive, protective, playful, and very loving. I love him so much but he also has this calm bossman side, it's very intriguing. Second is Cade. At first Cade seems the preppy time but then his temper explodes and that foul-mouth gets going, woo. Cade is an alpha-butt but we like him anyway, even when he says some questionable things. Third is Chase. Chase is that bad boy with a bad attitude but makes a girl swoon. Finally, there's Jay who is the strong and silent type, and Kale who seems sweet. I don't know if either of them will end up in the harem but I want to know more about them.
Story
This book is filled with elementals and their political drama. There are three political factions in the elemental society. Traditionalist, Modernist, and Elitest. Traditionalists want to keep separate from humans, Modernists want to blend into human society, and while Elle didn't explain what they want by the name I darn sure can guess. None of these sides get along and there are some long-standing grudges but both sides come together when they make a drastic mistake and the Elitest come out. Pretty soon it's all-out war, a few revelations, and pretty much every character is traumatized by the end of this story.
Secrets and Sin is only the first book in The Essential Elements Remix series and I have no idea where the story is gonna lead but I will be there for it.
YESSSS! Ok, so I didn't read the original versions of this series but this is now my favorite book by Elle. Holden is my favorite but him and Chase...🤤🤤🤤 If you love RH, magic, mystery, and betrayal this book is for you. You will not regret picking this book up. I can't wait to see what happens next and of course more about her grandfather.
It's a shame, the plot had lots of potential, but there were a lot of flaws to the book. Biggest flaw, it felt like the FMC totally changed personalities part way thru the book. She was shy, anti-social, awkward around people, seemed like a virgin or never go to parties. Then suddenly, she's been to parties on military bases, has had sex and drank, & hung out with people in her past. Huh, not what I gathered from the first part of the book, talk about switching characters against the original type set. It was almost like either another writer took over or that the author put the draft down & didn't write for a while & when she came back to it, forgot what the FMC was really like in the previous pages. That was a big hiccup for me, totally pulled me out of the story & lost my enjoyment factor, I almost quit the book it was such a strong reaction. The other flaw, I couldn't keep the guys straight, they sounded alike on the pages. I needed something to distinguish them from each other besides names. Adding the 3rd guy in seemed forced into the book, and didn't really seem like it was supposed to be there, other than to make it a Reverse Harem instead of a menage. I definitely won't continue with the series & I'm surprised at myself for not quitting this book.

OMG! I have been in such a book funk and have not felt like reading! This book was released at the perfect time and now I am left waiting for book 2! Elle Middaugh blew me away with this book! I honestly don't know how I am going to read another book until the 2nd book in this series comes out! Who knew elemental reverse harem books are where it is at!
This book is fabulous! I absolutely love Valerie! For someone who has always kept to herself, she sure did open up and feel super comfortable with certain people. Holden is my fav with Chase a close second. Yeah I claimed them as mine ladies! As for Cade, I am not sure on him yet. He is a little too wishy washy for me and cannot make up his mind sometimes. His mood swings are all over. I get it based on his upbringing but man I don't know if I would have given him so many chances.
I cannot believe that ending! I am so happy (spoiler) Val is an elemental! You would think it makes things easier but it definitely does not! I think her Grandfather is going to cause a lot of trouble. We saw a glimpse of it in this book, but I think there is a lot more to come!
Elle Middaugh... what have you done to me! I cannot wait for book 2 to come out! **Sigh** Hopefully sooner rather than later!
Loved it!! I can't speak for how similar this storyline is the the original story - I believe that this story is an aged-up version of a trilogy by the same author, but written as a RH story with spicy themes and other changes - but what I do know is that this story was entertaining, engaging, and I read it all in one sitting so it's fast-paced as well. I want to read the other trilogy now to see the differences because this world was just an absolute delight to jump into!
This author has a beautiful writing style, no matter what genre she writes in, so I'll always be a fan and read anything she puts out. I HIGHLY recommend picking this one up if you're a fan of magical characters in a unique setting. Especially if you enjoy RH. I know I loved every word and am now anxiously waiting for the next part in this series!
I loved this book! Secrets and Sins is a retelling Elle Middaugh crafted of her Essential Elements book 1. That was the first book I ever read by Elle, and I am so amazed by how far shes come in these last years. She writes and crafts amazing stories, and I love getting lost in the stories.
Secrets and Sins takes us back to Val, Cade, and Holden....but this time Val doesn't have to choose. The original is a YA, but this is a medium burn RH. There are new potential romantic interests. There are amazing new perspectives and changes that dont ruin the original story, but truly give it that "why choose vibe." Its Elle's own mini multi-verse, if you will! I love the multiple points of view, the new twists, and the uptick in steam between the characters. It still has the same major villain, but with the new take on love, I'm excited to see how the end will culminate this time!

This first book in The Essential Elements Remix is just what you have been waiting for! If you love RH, magic, elementals, and steam, you are in luck! Elle Middaugh has created a world where the main character, Valerie, is just as confused about what is happening around her as the reader. Secrets are spilled and revealed as Val explores her relationships with Cade, Holden, and Chase. The difficulty making friends that Val has is totally relatable as the daughter of the military scene. I cannot wait for this series to continue and Val learns more about herself, her family, her powers, and her relationships with the guys.
Elle Middaugh blew this one out of the water! I've been itching to get my hands on her next book and she definitely didn't disappoint.
Val is my favourite kind of FMC! I adore the ones that are awkward and shy, that really take time to grow into who they are. Val is both who I am but also, who I crave to be. I loved being on this mysterious rollercoaster ride with her as we discover things about her that leave you down right shocked.
This world Elle's created is one that I cannot wait to dive deeper into! The guys are amazing, but the connection I feel with Val is what really has me hooked.
Another fantastic book by Elle Middaugh! I'm very impatiently awaiting the next one!!
This is an awesome beginning to a new series. You spend a lot of time in the dark with the FMC (Valerie) so you are just as shocked by each revelation as she is. I also have a special appreciation for any character that describes Tequila as "daddy-dom" vibes. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Elementals and this world they have for themselves as well as her relationship with her boys (yes boys...definitely a RH). ESPECIALLY, Holden and Chase...I licked them, they're mine. ;) There is also some spice, which is also appreciated. I'm looking forward to the next one hopefully soon!!!
Absolutely my favorite book by Elle so far! Val has led a loner life up until she attends college. Her mom passed away years ago and her dad is in the Navy and leaves for deployments every few years. While her dad is on deployment, she lives with her Aunt Marge. For college, she's decided to head back to the small town with her aunt. There she encounters classmates she knew of in high school and had crushes on. They show her special interest now that she's back into town.
Oh wow! I didn't know I needed this until I read it in one sitting. Meeting the characters and trying to figure out what's happening in this mysterious town was a ride. A beautifully crafted world with charismatic characters and villains will leave you panting for book 2.
I received an ARC copy and am voluntarily leaving my review.
A great remix on the original series! I loved it before, but now that it is RH, college age, and deliciously steamy -- I'm totally hooked! I can't wait to see what else is tweaked and added as the series progresses.
Quick & Dirty Details: - College Age - Reverse Harem - Elementals - Steamy - Multi POV - First in series (rewritten Essential Elements series to be more mature and RH)
I love the suspense in this story. And the tension. You just have to keep turning pages because you really want to know if she ends up with this guy, and that one and you want to know more about the magic and the backstory. It has just the right amount of burn, right amount of story and character development to keep you enthralled. Excellent RH remix to the previous YA story. Not gonna lie. I’m loving that it’s RH way more!
What a great start to a new series! A nice paranormal read for those tired of wolf shifters and vampires. The characters are well written, and the storyline is interesting. Definitely can't wait to read the next installment!
This was my first book ever by Elle Middaugh and she did not disappoint! I will be going back and reading the rest of her books now.
Secrets and Sins was fanatics. You were brought along for the ride that the FMC (Valerie) went through. I felt every emotion she went through even the love she has for her guys. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
DNF (did not finish). What made the book unfinishable in your opinion? I am surprised this book received so many good ratings. I felt like the main character completely changed personalities based on how she was described and acted in the beginning part of a book. One moment she's the shy person that doesn't want any attention and then admits she likes to party and has had a flurry of one-night stands. There isn't anything wrong with a character with a dual type personality. It’s just that the author didn’t show even a hint of the main character being like that. The love interests our love with her for some reason, and I have to agree with the other reviewers that rated this poorly, you can't tell them apart personality wise. I'm sure there is a reason that her love interest like her, it probably has something to do with elemental magic. I made it to around 34% in the book before I just didn't care anymore. This wasn't a bad book it just wasn't for me.
Angst, Action and Amour….what more could you want?? This is my first read of Middaughs and I’m impressed….I finished this book in one night…..will definitely be reading more! Valerie is a great FMC, she’s mature for her age due to her family circumstances but she still maintains a great sneakiness (and her attitude to tequila is 👌🏻🤣) Much to her delight her high school crushes are now returning her affections. Holden the cheeky charming playboy, Cade the brooding passionate, and Chase the surprise! 😍 Boy is there some fast burn HAWTNESS …but it’s not with secrets and mysteries! 😳 On top of that she realises that the town she’s in experiences an alarmingly high number of freak natural disasters from earthquakes to fires 😖 this draws her into a realm of magic and politics she has to try and weave successfully…..otherwise there’s dire consequences that not even her harem can help her with! Not only that but she discovers significant secrets regarding her own lineage that place her front and centre of this new world she’s trying to navigate 🙈 Her harem and her ultimately choose each other…but are they strong enough to face what’s coming and overcome politics?! 😬
Since I can’t give partial stars, I’ll have to say the first 3/4 of the book was a 3-4star, and the last 1/4 of the book was closer to 5 stars, so that evens out to somewhere in the 4 star range. I’m not familiar with the first series that this is a reboot for, so I was coming in completely new. This is also the first book by this author I’ve read. She’s an excellent story teller. I did spend the first half of the book wondering why the heck the guys suddenly took an interest in the FMC. I’m still not entirely sure why. Was instinctual? Will we know more in the next parts to the trilogy? Hopefully. This book follows the FMC, Val, a quiet loner, as she enters into college. Suddenly some of her old HS crushes now show an interest in her. Throw a jealous cheerleader/mean girl who seems to know more about what’s going on behind the scenes than the FMC or we do, and some elemental magic in there with some political sides and you have a nice fun story. There is some good steam along the way. At the end of this book we know of 3 that are definitely in her harem, and perhaps more that will be? It’s a little unclear… and I feel like we know more of her boys than some. There are still plenty of questions we need answers to. When I’ve hit a streak of DNF books, this was definitely not one of them and look forward to the next two books in the series! I received an ARC book for an honest review.
Secrets and Sins is a gem! I connected with the protagonist right away- from her anxiousness to her military background. This book takes you on a ride. I was really surprised by the plot twists. Any guess that I had was small compared to the few secrets the author gave us. I loved seeing the MC opening up and finally feeling comfortable to be herself around others was awesome. Valerie navigated this new life with honor, humor and courage. I’m rooting for her in all of the future fights!
While Valerie blossomed, the supporting characters showed the most transformation throughout the book. They stepped up with each new discovery/secret they learned, tried to find solutions and eventually relied on each other as friends. It was nice to see their bond form after not previously trusting each other. There are a few chapters of alternating POV giving the reader a chance to know more about the other characters’ background. But Elle doesn’t give away plot hints in those chapters either; just making you more curious and eager to finish. I liked how their multi romantic relationship started too. It didn’t feel rushed or unnatural for the characters’ personalities or at the expense of their individual relationships. It showed maturity and transparency.
With the way the first book ended, you can tell they will be thrown more curveballs in book 2. I can’t I wait; I know this is just the tip of the iceberg.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Secrets and Sins in exchange for an honest review.
4 Stars ★ – didn’t like/DNF ★★ – was okay, but I probably won’t look for any sequels ★★★- was good, I’ll likely read the next one ★★★★ – I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great and I’ll definitely be looking for any sequels ★★★★★ – I loved it so much I’m adding the paperback to my cart right now
I admit I've never read anything by Elle before and I wasn't sure what to expect. A few chapters in and I thought it was reminiscent of the Elemental Series by Brigid Kemmerer which was extremely YA and a little rudimental. That being said i was intrigued from the first chapter and quickly proven wrong.
Whilst it does feel a little YA despite the main characters all being 18+ (possibly because of the slow burn feel and naivety of the FMC of the Elemental world?) it definitely picks up and takes off. I haven't read the original series and I don't think I will for two reasons one; spoilers, two; i know the original series is MF and YA. This series has been tweaked into a more NA field though its YA roots still peak through and into a reverse harem which I love haha
I did predict as soon as Val said her dad was a foster kid and in the navy I guessed he was an elemental and i kind of found it amusing that two of the guys knew one of her parents’ were elementals but not the other and yet didn’t confer, mention it to her anything aha As chase pointed out they each knew the other half of the story but because they consider themselves adversaries they didn’t realise the entire truth until it was too late.
I’m pretty damn intrigued about Nic too and I actually want to see more of him. I also want to see her dad’s reaction when he hears about what happened.
All in all this book was pretty good. There were cute moments, sweet moments, funny moments, one kinda steamy moment and some jam packed moments. I will definitely be adding book two Lies and Longing to my TBR where I imagine we will be getting a lot more action, steam and more of a Adult feel rather than YA?
So I’ve just been lucky enough to read the ARC copy of this and I could not put it down.
I was going in blind having not read the original version of this series, and all I can say is this was 1000% meant to be an RH I don’t know how she ever chose!
I loved Valerie she’s quiet and a loner but she’s not shy and innocent she’s like this brilliant mix of fire and tranquility. Then of course no harem is complete without the lovely boys, now I’m not 100% sure on how this is going to pan out and who will ultimately be the complete harem, but so far we have Holden, Chase & Cade. They all bring different things to the table as we like to see, Chase is cocky, flirtatious and loves winding everyone up. Holden is calm, logical and very much an alpha. Cade is also an alpha however he’s broody, argumentative and misunderstood. Now Jay is a question mark for me there have been hints that he’s interested but he is unavailable and I’m not 100% sure myself but I can’t wait to see where this will go and how it will all pan out.
All in all if you love fantasy, reverse harem, magic, spice and all things nice, definitely give this a read.
A wonderful remix of her ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS series!! This book is filled to the brim with intrigue, action, paranormal politics, alpha males, and oh so many secrets. Growing up a loner as a Navy brat...since her mother died, whenever her dad deployed our awesome main character is always the new girl. Now in college she's back with her beloved aunt and hoping for a fresh start. Darn it all if her past secret crushes don't keep popping up, as well as the Queen B who always made her life miserable. Strange things keep happening, and all these things happening at once are a bit of an overload....can she figure out what's going on? Can she finally find a place to call home? Dive in and get comfy as there's oodles of drama, suspense, angst, and oh so many feels....not to mention a big bad (or two 😉). I can't wait for book two!!
Let me start off by saying this book is fast paced and keeps you hooked! This so the first book I’ve read by Elle Middaugh and was not disappointed! We start off with Valerie (Val) coming back to town to live with her Aunt Marge, while her dad who is in the Navy is currently deployed. She meets Cade, Holden and Chase and strange explicable things keep happening but everyone refuses to give her any answers. We get a feel for Holden and see a deeper side of him, and get to know Cade too. But I’m ready to see what’s in Chase’s mysterious past. I did not see that plot twist coming! But I do have a few questions, like what was blocking Vals powers from coming though? I guess we will have to wait and see! I love the fact that this is RH but there’s still tension between the guys. It’s a nice break from the whole heh we all love each other and are perfect with sharing! All in all, I loved this book and can’t wait for book 2! 💜

Wow this book was just incredible! I really think that this could be a TV Series! Valerie is our FMC, she’s a Navy brat and tends to be a loner because of that. She’s had a crush on both Holden and Cade since high school but always kept to the background because she’s shy and it was just easier for her. She never really felt seen up until her first year of college when suddenly both her crushes seem to be interested in her as well. There’s a lot of strange happenings though, weird weather, the guys keeping secrets and her Aunt having strange books that talk about Elementals, which seems unreal to Valerie. This book is aptly named because there is definitely a lot of secrets and sins hidden inside of it. By the end of book 1 we get some answers but we need a lot more!
I received and ARC of this book and this is my honest review. To start off I didn’t not read the original of this story so if you want to know how it compares this isn’t the review for you sorry.
So I really enjoyed this story. Spice level wasn’t high but it worked well and was well detailed. This books kept me entertained and it was a fast read. I found the world to be very interesting and something I am excited to see expanded on. I am excited to see where the story goes and for the relationships and the harem to grow. FYI it ends on a cliffhanger.
The only issues I had were that the characters were supposed to be in college but I got a lot of high school vibes, and I felt there was too many italics used.
The action in this story was extremely unexpected. The plot thickened real quick and now I absolutely have to know what the heck could possibly be going on in book 2!!😱🤤😱🤤
Secrets and Sins is the first book I have ever read by Elle Middaugh but I absolutely loved it and I needed more!!💯💯 The relationships were pretty fast paced along with everything else but it all fit really nicely and kinda snuck up on me like Everclear. 🥵🥵 Some of the revelations were entirely unexpected which is surprising for me because I'm usually pretty good at picking up on certain things, but I did see the one with the FMC comin and was very pleased with how it was revealed!!👌🔥👌🔥 Just gonna sit here and twiddle my thumbs until book 2 comes out now!!
I've never read any books by yhis author before, but I'll be reading more since she broke my reading slump. The storyline was interesting, but it could have used a little more character and relationship building. Also, the stereotypical mean cheerleader bit felt very forced and ended up having no impact on the storyline whatsoever. The action-y scenes were hard to follow, having no warning or little build up to them so I ended up skimming those parts. Despite these, I still gave it a 4 out of 5 for capturing my interest and for the fact that I didn't have to edit it while reading it (thank you, elle middaugh, for editing and proof-reading--unlike a large number of kindle authors). Moving on to book 2!
