Grief, lies, and murder. What happens when secrets, deceit, and depravity converge in a small town?
Still reeling from a devastating loss, Paisley and her husband hope a fresh start in a new state will help them heal. Moving from the crowded city of San Francisco to a rural community in the woods of Washington is supposed to give them room to breathe and a place to rebuild their lives. Instead, it leaves Paisley struggling with loneliness and isolation.
The longer they stay, the more troubling this new chapter becomes. Their neighbors are anything but welcoming- harassing Paisley on a near constant basis. She’s at her wit’s end when there’s news of women being brutally murdered in the area.
As the body count rises, Paisley discovers the town that was supposed to bring them solace isn’t what it seems, and the secrets she and her husband are keeping could cost them everything.
I enjoyed this book and finished it over a period of a few hours. It centers on Paisley, who moves to a remote area in WA State with her husband and young daughter after suffering a loss and going through some financial issues. Once there, scary things start happening with threatening neighbors and murders of women around town. Meanwhile, we learn that Paisley's husband, Charlie, hasn't been fully up front with her around how he came about buying the land as well as the true depth of their financial problems.
The vibe of the book was definitely creepy- the storyline related to her dog and to the sounds from around the house hit the mark. I was fascinated by the subplot of the murders but wish it had been built into the story better- it felt like there would be much more panic from the primary characters if something like that was really happening. I wish Paisley's character had been developed a little better- the pain she was experiencing and the love for her dog were raw and believable, but I never really understood why she agreed to this big move, what kind of work she wanted to do, and what caused her to make some of the decisions she made.
There were a couple good twists in the book, some that I figured out and some that I didn't. The story is dark and the author doesn't shy away from things that are sad, scary, and graphic, and I enjoyed that. I liked the ending of the book, even though I had seen some of it coming.
Overall, this was a good book and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy horror and psychological thrillers. Thanks to Booksirens for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Neighbors will take you on one twisty, bumpy, spine-tingling ride. This book is dark and emotional. K. Lucas takes you on an adventure that only she could come up with, and the surprises she has in store for you are stunning. Paisley and her family have packed up, bought forty acres of land, and an RV to start a new life. Hopefully, this change of scenery will help them overcome the loss of their baby. They never considered the deafening quietness, or the neighbors. Paisley has no idea who to trust or where to go when more and more strange occurrences start to pile up.
K. Lucas has a knack for writing truly horrific, terrifying reads. Let us just say I will not be posting questions to any social media community boards for quite some time! You will be yelling at Paisley to open her eyes and to think before she does. Yes, this is a book for yelling at the characters! You will find yourself questioning some of the outcomes, yet the story is solid, and the ending is terrific! Thank you to K. Lucas for sending me your shocking, thrill a minute book!
I don’t know if I have ever gasped so loud while reading an epilogue. This read kept me on my toes and gave me the best kind of anxiety. Lots of unexpected twists that turned the plot on its head. The type of book you want to read again right away and look for clues. *There are some dark themes (pregnancy loss)
I was lucky to receive a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun and exciting read. Secrets and stranger personalities in a new small town. All along our POV character, Paisley, turns out not to be as dependable as readers may have thought. There some pretty good twists; some I figured out and some I didn't. I absolutely loved the cult vibe. The ending was totally satisfying.
Paisley is trying to deal with the worst pain imaginable with no one to help her besides her faithful companion, Bear. When her husband moves her to the middle of nowhere to try and help her deal with her loss, it just starts a new nightmare in motion. The few people in her new hometown are creepy, and soon, Paisley doesn't know who to trust, including her husband. She has to figure out who she can trust before it's too late. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this psychological thriller. The lengths that someone's mind will go to protect them and help them deal with trauma are fascinating to me and the character of Paisley is a great example of this.

Summary: The Neighbors follows Paisley and her family as the move to Washington from California. Grieving the lose of their baby, they believe the fresh start will be good for Paisley’s mental health. Once they get to their new 40 acres of land, strange things start to happen and Paisley doesn’t know who she can trust. Review: Before reading please be cautious of the following trigger warnings: pregnancy loss, murder, and animal cruelty. This book is full of twists and turns. There was one that I had a feeling about early on, but the others I didn’t see coming at all. The book was suspenseful, thrilling, and creepy. If you are into psychological thrillers, definitely check this one out.

Holy balls!! This book! What a ride! This story gave me anxiety, had me on the verge of tears and in complete suspense until the very last few pages.
Paisley and her husband Charlie and their German Shephard, Bear, have recently moved to a 40-acre plot of land for a fresh start. After a loss no parent should ever experience, this move is quite a change from their busy apartment in San Francisco but they both needed it and are excited to start anew.
Paisley's optimism turns sour when her neighbor comes onto her property with a shotgun accusing their dog of killing all of his chickens. Charlie has been working 14-hour days and when he is home, he just sleeps so Paisley is constantly on high alert. Shortly after this altercation she starts hearing drums playing at night near their property. Not rock drums either, but the kind of drums that sound ominous. To top it all off, she keeps seeing new reports of women in the area being murdered, cut to bits in their own homes. It's enough to drive someone mad, or has this been the plan all along?
None of the neighbors have been very friendly. Between the neighbor that threatened her and her dog, the drumming and the murders, Paisley is starting to regret ever moving to this small town. Charlie is gone all too often and isn't supportive when he is home. Paisley soon finds that not is all what it seems. She feels Charlie is hiding something and she is determined to find out what.
This story is a ride, no doubt. Twists and turns I never saw coming and the ending! This is a must read. It will have you on the edge of your seat and definitely leave you wanting more. I received this book for free from Booksirens for an honest review. This book will be available January 11, 2022.
Holy cow, I have no idea where to start! This book, while entertaining, is all over the place. To start we are introduced to Paisley having a reoccurring nightmare about having a miscarriage. When she wakes up we see that she, her husband Charlie, three year old daughter, and Bear her beloved German Shepard had just left the busy life of San Francisco to live on 40 acres in Washington.
Right away she receives a visit from her shotgun wielding neighbor threating to shoot her dog for killing his chickens. This launches a crazy, dark, ominous ride. Her husband who is at work all the time is unable to help her as she battles her crazy neighbors, Drums beating every night outside her door, and a viscous serial killer cutting up women to pieces in her neighborhood.
What's good: The plot, the pacing and how she handles the story. And sticking the ending. Two crazy plot twists I had no idea were coming. And the ending! Not talking about that. Just get ready to get mindeffed. The story is really masterfully plotted. But:
The bad: Oh boy…… For such a well plotted book there are some huge flaws in my opinion. The dialogue is not the best. It works but just seems really choppy. Some of the chapters when centering around certain characters in third person are really bad and hard to read. Plus there is one part of the story written several times, (hard to explain without spoilers) that is basically just cut and pasted three times. So just awkward to read at some times. And lastly, there are some trigger warnings about animal abuse. They really hit hard for me and there is one incident, that I really can't forgive that is unresolved (unless I missed it……) So beware.
But after reading, and especially the ending, it was just a good, but really dark, story overall. I can't help but think it would make a better transition to the small screen (Netflix series) then book. Plus look at all your favorite authors: Stephen King etc etc. Remember the horrible mess of their first books? Great stories but maybe not so well written? I can see how K Lucas's future books will be that much greater. I'm definitely reading more of them.

This was a ride folks......right off the side of a CLIFF! I read a lot of books, not many get a jaw drop but The Neighbors did! I finished this last night but had to reread the last half again this morning....THIS BOOK WAS CRAZY! I thought for sure I had misread something.
I have no clue how this author came up with this story but they nailed it. This is how a psychological thriller is done y'all!
The Neighbors gets all the stars, take em all! Holy smokes.
As an animal lover and Mom....I feel compelled to share trigger warnings of animal abuse, mental health, fertility and violence.
Thank you to BookSirens for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review!
Another page turner and great psychological thriller by K. Lucas! Without going into more detail than what is already in the book description as to not give anything away, I will just say The Neighbors will keep you guessing about what’s really going on through each twist and turn, right up to the end. (As a dog lover, I love that this book also features a dog as a main character.) There are some trigger warnings but nothing that isn't pretty clear from the book description and nothing that I wouldn't expect from a psychological thriller. The Neighbors is a must read!
This book had so many twists and turns! Just when you think you know what's going to happen, it throws you through a loop! I enjoyed reading it and trying to guess what was going to happen next! The only thing I wish is that the murders were tied in more to the plot. To me they didn't really seem to tie into the plot and were explained as more of an afterthought. However the rest almost makes up for it and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique thriller!

Gripping. Poor, poor Paisley has a lot of issues to work through and though the neighbors are there to help, they're absolutely crazy. This story had me gripping my seat most of the way through. The writing is well done, evoking, and pleasing. One twist after the other had my head spinning and I was truly terrified more than once for Paisley, her daughter, and her dog, even when I began to guess things. The POV switch-up took some getting used to but I can see why the author chose that tactic.
I love thrillers and this book is definitely a thriller! The author throws in some twists and turns, which keeps the reader guessing. The author also keeps the reader invested in the story. You just want to continue reading and wanting to see what will happen next! The author wrote this story well and knows how to entertain her readers!

This book started out a little slow, but about a third of the way it really picked up. I was totally invested in the story and had to find out what happened. The ending blew me away, I was totally shocked! Very entertaining book!
I’m not usually shocked by a read, but this one had so many over the top situations, I couldn’t put it down. I guessed about Paisley’s imagination, but nothing really else! My only problem was the misuse of words ( shuttered instead of shuddered when describing a person’s reaction in fear), and a few punctuation errors, but not to be missed!
Omg. This. Friggin. Book!!!!! It was so well written that the creepy parts had me scared to go to sleep. I devoured it because I couldn’t put it down. And THAT TWIST. I’m at a loss for words. One of the best thrillers I’ve read in a while, and I think fans of the Horror genre would enjoy it as well!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it kept me reading! Lots of unexpected twists & turns (trust me - the ending!) Talk about suspense!! Definitely going to look for other books by this author!
I enjoyed this book. The storyline moved at a good pace and has some strong characters. It explores how love and loss can affect the mind and delivers an unexpected twist at the end.
I got an ARC of this from BookSirens ans would up finishing it within a few hours. A lot of twists and turns in this book. Just when you thought that you knew what was happening, everything took a hard left. This book left me terrified to ever live in the middle of nowhere. And that ending will have you going "oh my God, what?" Such a wonderfully suspenseful read!

This was an on-the-edge-of-the-seat-thrill-ride-a-minute book, with plenty of twists and turns, a few of which completely blind-sided me, kudos to the author as that seldom happens.
I cannot really say much about this book that won't give the plot and twists away, and I don't want to just rehash what the blurb says, as I am sure you would have already read that, before this review.
Suffice it to say, highly recommended if you enjoy fast-paced, suspenseful, thrilling, with a bit of creepy.
There are trigger warnings for animal abuse, profanity and sex, however these are implied and said, but are not really done in any sort of details. More like the aftermath not the during.
When young mother Paisley loses a child through a traumatic labour and childbirth, husband Charles is sure a move to the countryside will heal the spirit of his troubled young wife.
Yet Paisley soon discovers that the ways of the country are not the ways of the city. When an angry neighbour threatens to take away her dog after he allegedly kills his chickens, Paisley and her three-year-old Ellie soon find themselves isolated and vulnerable in their trailer, wondering when they will be targeted for attack. The husband, who works nights, is emotionally unavailable. And what is with the si ister drumming that gets closer to their trailer at nights as they sleep.
Then there is news of a serial killer targeting local women. The local sheriff. Hank, seems like a good man, but he surely will be unable to protect Paisley at all times….
This writer is excellent at ratcheting up a sense of foreboding and dread from the very first pages, reading on always carries the fear that something horrid will assuredly happen either to Paisley, Ellie, or the dog - the the dog does indeed disappear.
However, an awful lot about the community, the people on Paisley's life and what Paisley knows, are not at all what they seem, and much further along, it appears that very little is what it seems - in fact are more twists than there are hairpins up a steep hill.
Definitely worth recommending to those who enjoy this kind of slow-burn chiller.

Creepy,Scary, Sick, are three words to describe this novel, but, was one that I just couldn't stop reading. Paisley, loses her child and is unable to get over her loss. Her husband,Charlie and her Dr.decides that a life style change would help the both of them. They buy a travel trailer and take off, going into another state and then purchasing 40 acres of forest land, that has several acres, needing to be cleared, before building a home. Charlie goes to work everynite, after setting up the trailer and sleeps all day,so his wife is mainly on.her own. She starts hearing strange drums almost.nightly, that either keep her awake all night or make her have terrible nightmares. She calls the local law enforcement and he comes immediately to see what the problem is and they become very good friends, especially while her husband is working.
She soon meets other neighbors and they all appear very strsnge. There had been several women.murdered in the area lately, all.we're terribly mutilated, limbs severed, body parts missing and they think.it's the work of a serial killer.
There is a lot going on and Paisely, the wife,is finding it harder and harder to trust anyone,or adapt to the life change. The only person she whole heartedly trusts has four legs instead of two and his name is Bear !
If you like psychological thrillers, you'll devour this one.It hits you.with a right hook, then.a left hook and you know, the big one is coming, but you'll never see it,till it does and then it's too late and almost unbelievable. Enjoy, K.Lucas, has hit another one out of the park.

Paisley and her husband, Charlie, struggle with the psychological consequences of a msicarraige. They leave their city life and move to an isolated forest area with their dog, Bear, where they live in a mobile home before building a new house. While Charlie is absent long hours for work, Paisley struggles with the neighbours and the townsfolk. Charlie seems less than supportive but Hank the local policeman is more than helpful. Meanwhile, a series of brutal/gruesome murders take place around the area, all women and all mutliated.
The plot twists as the story develops: a commune that turns out to be a cult, an evil neighbour who turns out to be friendly, friendly neighbours who turn out to be evil, a cheating husband who turns out to be devoted, and all the ehwil, those murders… As this is a suspense, I'll leave my plot decsription there.
The key character relationships are well-developed and the etting is used well in developing suspense and fear.
I only gave 3 out of 5 because I thought there could've been some earlier hinst to the later developments.
The good: There are some genuinely tense moments. One scene in particular was especially scary to me. I’m also a sucker for dogs and this book has a loyal and lovable German shepherd.
The bad: I wish I was joking when I say that I correctly figured out all of the twists by the 20% mark. They are painfully obvious in my opinion, and this is a book that banks everything on the twists, so it was a very disappointing read for me. Another thing I noticed is that some phrases are used over and over again. (“Sweaty palms” is used to describe someone being nervous at least 3 or 4 times).
Verdict: While not poorly written, if you’ve ever read a book with plot twists, you’ll probably want to stay away from this one. I’m not saying I could write something better, but this just wasn’t for me. 2.25/5.
“His secrets were his downfall.”
“Charlie had to have found this town in a Stephen King novel.”
This was just an okay read for me. It’s your ‘Get Out’ meets ‘The Midsummer Murders’ movie in a book.
I could understand the storyline, but it felt like I was reading two different books cause the book lacked sync.
There was a lot going on and it wasn’t well put together so at a point you’re lost. Also it should come with a trigger warning for depression, animal abuse.
I loved that I was invested in the main character so much that I was on her side till the very end. It wasn’t predictable, but the ending didn’t add up with what we’d read.
The depression could have been explored more, Tom’s character wasn’t correctly presented, more clarity as to the ending that actually correlates with what we’ve read in the book.

a lifetime movie meets Law & Order SVU gone wrong. This book was certainly unique. First, it needs a trigger warning for gruesome abuse and murder, animal abuse and extreme depiction of mental illness. Hallucinations, a cult, and seemingly random murders - I feel like there was way too much going on here. Also, it was a missed opportunity to shed light on a mother’s mental illness. Just when it doesn’t seem like it could get any stranger, two people you would never expect to be together somehow get together. If it wasn’t for wanting to know what happened to the dog, this would have been a DNF for me. Thanks to the publisher and book sirens for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. This review will be posted to my Instagram blog (books_by_the_bottle) as well.
