Compared to the first couple of Christmas collections, there are maybe a few too many stories here that merely happen to take place in late December. But there are also three kings and a tree whose gifts come at a price, two lonely snowmen, and an ancient evil wanting to take midwinter back to its darker roots by manipulating festive iconography. The highlight for me was probably James Moran's story, but I am a sucker for anything in which a kid wants a puppy.

It'll be odd after three of these collections watching a Christmas special in which the Doctor and Santa are likely not played as old friends. Still, Capaldi is a bit that way with everyone, isn't he?

Doctor Who pretty much define my reading list since this quarantine era of 2020 and since it's Christmas, I feel compelled to read a Doctor Who Christmas stories.
Needless to say, an anthology of short story always a mixed bag of different interpretation of the theme and I have wide range degree of satisfaction reading it. Two of my favourite story definitely "Instead of You" by Laurence Donaghy and "No Room" by Rebecca Levene. Does it cringy at times? By all means, yes. Does it still felt good? Definitely! I found other stories to be forgettable at best. Some felt unnecessary dark, for Christmas story.

Review by Story…

Mirth, and Walking Spirits: A fabulous ghost story for Christmas. Really enjoyed the Scottish flavor to this one. 4.5/5

Lost and Founded: Well done, but horribly sad. Poetic but sad. 4.5/5

Dateline to Deadline: Not sure about this one. It’s pretty good I think. Was a bit irritated at the lack of explanation for the baddies. But I love exploiting the Third Doctor’s Holmesian influences. 3.5/5

Interesting Times: Oh fuck yes. Perfect characterizations of both 3 and Sarah Jane. Perfect short story structure that feels like it could have been written by Ray Bradbury but with a twist worthy of the Twilight Zone. Perfection. 5/5

A Visit From St Nicholas: A cute little story. Mostly made me feel bad for the Brig. 3/5

Conscription: A violent twisted story that doesn’t really have anything to do with Christmas? Also I know all of the Doctor’s are bastards. But I feel bad that sweet Sarah Jane got stuck with two of the prickliest incarnations. 3.5/5
