Emery and other characters in Unchained Forgiveness have through hell and back. I enjoyed the slow revealing of what happened as Emery processes it all and grows.

If you like your romance to follow a set outline of meet-cute, kiss, love, sex, this book is not for you. I love a good dark romance, and I love well-written character growth, this book had both. There was also a twist that made it even better!

Is the dark and abuse in present tense? No, but seeing Emery process his trauma through flashbacks and nightmares was cathartic. Ryker was strong and kind and I loved him. The supporting characters were great, and I wanted more of them.

No sexy times until the very end, but it was damn hot when it happened!

"There was, after all, only so much any human could endure. Even for the strongest of souls."

My Rating : 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟
.
I have no words. If there’s a thing called getting heartbroken for a character fora thing that happened fictionally,I’m suffering from that. This book follows our characters : Emery,an abuse survivor and a witness to take down an illegal empire; and Ryker, a retired officer who was strong enough to bring Emery out of his shell. The book is filled with dark themes and emotional and heartbreaking moments, that it was impossible not to tear up. The flash backs with Emery and his friend was heartbreaking and it was written flawlessly. Ryker was a strong rock and I loved his patience and his attention to detail. The relationship between Emery and Ryker was filled with so much trust and simple touches, and the author managed to bring out the after effects of trauma really well.
.
<>"I knew I wouldn’t be allowed to leave. Just like everywhere else. I didn’t need a rope or chain to hold me in place. I’d learned that lesson all too well. I allowed one tear to fall before I shut my thoughts and emotions down. They didn’t matter. I didn’t matter."
.
Coming to the character and story development, I absolutely loved the way Emery came out of his shields, and seeing him flourish under Ryder’s care was so beautiful to read about. I don’t want to spoil the last half of the book, but something very emotional happens and it ends with a very happy ending at last for the characters. But it was a journey to get there! The third character that gets introduced added another layer of emotional depth and I loved it. The only thing was the the book ended abruptly with an epilogue. Like, we had all these emotional moments that was gearing towards a certain conversation, but it never happened. Overall, a very addictive and an emotional read though!

Whew…I don’t even have words. I feel like I just need a minute. Wow. I have a major hangover after this book. I am just completely in awe at the love within this story. It’s dark, raw and emotionally powerful. Emory, Enzo and Ryker wow they had a very intense and unbreakable bond. I really felt Emery’s pain and emotions. I really enjoyed this book and once I picked it up I could not put it down. I was completely immersed in my kindle and didn’t want to leave. This was my first book by this author and it definitely will not be my last!

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Emery was so brave, he might not have thought that he was, but he went through so much, and was able to stand up to a lot. He should really be proud of himself.

Ryder was such a good, strong, supportive character. He is everything that Emery and Enzo need, including a safe place to let them figure stuff out.

Enzo made me a little mad because he didn't let Emery know he was alive as soon as he could. But, he did make it up.

SPOILERS/ RANT

It started off as a very promising four star but it just kept getting lower and lower when I realized that the book is entirely centered around Riley and Ryker working with his trauma and falling in love and then finding a way to be comfortable enough with Enzo etc etc. It’s not a love triangle but a polyamory relationship. What throws me off is the basis of the book is from Enzo and Riley being sex trafficked, neglected, abused and tortured and I feel like a lot of those aspects weren’t addressed in the way they should have.

The author had them go through therapy, gave them clear ptsd, had them be closed off the expected things and you can understand that regarding there circumstances. And then they just keep throwing in mentions of time which is so off putting because when they mention that the entire book took around the course of 10 months. Near the end of the book their state of mind was not anywhere near the state of mind they should have been considering their circumstances. They were legitimately having sex with no flashbacks, no ptsd responses, no shutting down, no telling them to stop because they realized they needed more time no nothing. And I’m not saying this in a way that I wanted to see it because I’m sadistic but I’m saying this in a way that why would you put that in like that when you know they’re victims?? It’s just not clicking for me. Also, Riley does not have a trauma response to sex in the book. He wakes up from nightmares from when he was sex trafficked but in the book he just straight up has no trauma response to it. Enzo even tells Ryker that Riley wants to fuck him. And I understand that people could be hyper sexual as a trauma response but Riley’s not in the book at all. If anything considering his character I think it would be more likely for him to shut down or black out or just breakdown overall not actively seek out sex because he’s into romance. I can’t keep going on this rant because I’ll never stop on all the different ways I wish they were portrayed instead of the immediate love story but overall my statement is that they moved on WAY to fast and recovered way too fast.

On my last note, I hated the way the sex trafficking situation was handled and Riley’s parent situation was handled. In the book Riley and Enzos captor is just killed off after Ryker calls up a friend. Just like that he’s gone. That’s their justice. He didn’t even get sent to prison, Rykers friend literally just goes to him and tells him that they’re dead. If he’s dead he’s dead okay, but in the beginning of the book cops mention that Riley was in one of the biggest sex trafficking rings they know and then some of it’s mentioned on the news so you know it’s big. And then they just kill him off?????? What about all of his contacts? All those other people he hurt? We’re just not going to explore that? No we’re going to get Ryker calling Riley a sugar dumpling as he feeds him oatmeal in a very loving manor.
Later on Riley’s parents come along and they just thought he ran away instead of getting sex trafficked in the beginning and they completely accepted it. (Not the dad he didn’t think he ran away, he pushed for the case but eventually gave up) and that was that for them. Riley comes back / is saved and like a few months into the 10 month plot of the book they have the opportunity to see their son again and the Mom is just a straight up cunt. As expected from what we heard of her before but her character has no depth. I was so disappointed, she’s just there to make Riley feel like a piece of shit and reinforce that he’s never had a good life before Ryker. They get kicked out etc etc but then the dad comes back who let the mom pop her shit btw and just gives them a fuck ton of money and tells them to be happy. Bruh. I’m not realizing that I’m stressed out because there were generally no hardships in the book.

All of the hardships you would expect are just thrown out the window for some fucking fluff between Enzo x Ryker x Riley. I was gonna stop this rant earlier but I need to say this as well. Earlier in the book it’s mentioned Riley can’t go many places but the safe house because there are people after him and it’s NEVER brought up again after Steven is mysteriously murdered by Rykers friend. What the fuck happened to the sex trafficking ring and the people after him? That being said if it was so easy to find Steven (Riley and Enzos captor) and mind you it took like 2 weeks for Rykers friend to find him, why the fuck haven’t they done that before? Enzo was found before Riley they couldn’t found the other missing people. Riley didn’t even have a clue where Steven was so Rykers friend genuinely had to hunt for him and he did it so why didn’t he do that before considering that was a case that was on the news? Why only when Ryker brought it up? No hardships. Even when Riley’s having a nightmare Ryker cuddles him back to sleep.

I need to stop, good day.

I'm having mixed feelings about this one, as it states that it's a very dark book but really it's not even close to dark.
It never truly goes in to enough details to make it dark, it's more emotional than anything, because I felt Emery's struggles, there was rawness in his guilt and need for safety.

Following Emery as he navigates panic attacks, being closed off from the world and feeling safe again, I liked his relationship with Ryder. The connection between them was strong and always gentle.

Enzo remained a mystery to me, even at the end of the book, because he never gets a chapter of his own and I didn't get a connection to him like I did Emery and Ryder.
I'm not sure why Ryder fell for Enzo and it felt like something was missing that could have been solved with just including chapters for him.

Which is why the sexual part of the book felt a bit out of place, because we'd had so long to get to know Emery and Ryder and Enzo is just tossed in there without much substance.

I'm always up for a good dark, damaged characters getting second chances story, so I was pretty quick to say yes to this one. While the story line is definitely dark, I was expecting more details and focus on what had happened to Emery and Enzo.

The story starts by introducing us to Ryker who is semi-retired from law enforcement but is in a position to help provide support to the nearby safe house. Then we meet Enzo, a young man who was recently recovered from captivity when he was left for dead by his captors. It is clear from the get go that Enzo really belongs in a facility that can look after him more closely, as he is barely functioning at this point. Ryker makes it his mission to help Enzo in his recovery. I really liked where the story was going at this point.

Then, we meet Enzo, Emery's co-captive whom Emery believed he had killed. Enzo and Emery were used and made to do things to each other for the entertainment of their captors. Needless to say, his appearance caused a bit of a tizzy. Enzo is also extremely fearful of men and doesn't take very kindly to Ryker, who, at this point, has earned the trust of Ryker.

This is a bit of a triangle as far as the relationship goes. Ryker and Emery have not done anything together but cuddle, etc. and there are issues with one wanting to do more but doesn't want to pressure, etc. Luckily, the communication breakdown is handled fairly quickly and they all work to get on the same page.

There is a bit of a strange side story with Emery's parents. I was skeptical due to their behavior, but the men handled everything as well as could be expected.

This was my first experience with this author, and I really enjoyed her style. It was easy to read and flowed well. I was hoping for more details from captivity, etc., but that's just me being greedy. I will definitely be looking for more from Ms. Winchester in the future.

Man, I needed to breathe. I needed some space after reading this raw and gritty and emotional story. It's so emotionally powerful. Emery, Ryker and Enzo. I was amazed at their strength and their determination. And I awed by their love and dedication to one another.

This book was not what I expected...it was even better! This is an emotional story about trying to get back what was ripped away from you without your consent. Emery is barely holding himself together. If it wasn't for Ryker, Emery would truly be lost to the nightmares of his own mind. I felt these characters to the depth of my soul and was all in from page 1. This story has twists and turns and will have you glued to your kindle.

I struggled a bit and almost gave up on this book, numerous times. Honestly I feel it ended too abruptly.
Despite this book having a supposed Dark storyline, I think the author could have taken it further, made it darker.

I understand Emery went through hell, it was hell being abused and forced to abuse and torture, someone you love. We got a few of these flashbacks.
Ryder took to Emery almost immediately, he could see the broken man, and while he didnt know the full details, he treated Emery like a human being and earned his trust.

I feel like we lost out by not having Enzos POV, with in the story. We see how Emery is defeated and feels useless after killing the man he loves. We see how Ryder is willing to help Emery and Enzo put themselves together.
But Enzos side of the story is completely blank.

⛓️MY REVIEW⛓️

This was the first book I have read by Autumn Winchester and i really loved it. I wish I could have given it 5 stars but I just felt there was something missing. I really enjoyed Emery and Rykers relationship and felt dubious towards Enzo when he was brought into the situation. I felt like he was going to change the dynamics of their relationship and Rykers love for Emery was palpable. I wondered where that would leave Ryker and I had worried about his feelings and Emery's need for him.

Enzo and Emery had developed a relationship in captivity and loved eachother. They had been the light for one another during the terrible abuse and trauma they had endured. My heart broke for the both of them. But I just couldn't see how the three of them would fit together, especially considering Enzo's jealousy and hostility towards Ryker.

I feel like we really needed some chapters from Enzo's POV, this would have definitely been a 5 star read for me if we had some insight to his thoughts and feelings, Enzo's character had little substance to the story I felt. I was slightly disappointed because he was an intriguing character and we never really saw his internal battle with his desire towards Ryker. So when it came to fruition between them it seemed kind of abrupt and undeveloped. However, with that being said. I generally really enjoyed this read and would definitely recommend it.

I'm going to pick up the other books by Autumn Winchester because I'm really intrigued about Collin and Scarlett's stories as well. I'm looking forwards to digging into The Precious series.

This can be read is a standalone. However characters from The Precious series make an appearances in Unchained Forgiveness.

This one is going to pull at your heart strings. And please head all the trigger warnings, because this is not a nice book. Nothing on page for those triggers, but mentions of them. What you do have on page is a very broken young man who has basically lost the will to live because of the horrible things done to him, and that he had to do to survive. Emery's story is the one you never want someone to go through, but he made out, sort of. Through witness protection, he's placed in a house next to an ex-service member (on purpose) who is to help with groceries and what not. Normally Ryker doesn't have any problems doing just that, but criminals are easy to ignore. The lost and haunted young man, not so much. So groceries turns into helping with meds, cooking, and before you know it, Ryker is the only person Emery trusts. And then Emery's world is turned upside down again, but I'm not going to ruin that part.

This story is told from Emery and Ryker's POVs with flash backs to help understand what happened to Emery. I liked the little details from Ryker, like him trying to concentrate on his accounting work, but his thoughts keep going to the hurting boy next door. And I liked the therapists, yes 2. I don't want to give too much away, but you see that not all therapists are the right fit. And in an attempt to try and do good, they can cause harm, or even make the wrong choices. Therapy is a delicate dance of pushing and listening.

Alright so I enjoyed this. That said, there were a few things that bugged me. I enjoyed Emery and Ryker, but thought there needed more with Enzo in the mix. He kinda felt out of place. I did love the softness between them all and I liked that Enzo cooled his shit, but kinda wish all the big bads weren't just a nonissue. Like there needed to be a touch more to anticipate rather than just the three guys together. Overall though I enjoyed it. The boys got therapy and found several people to help them.

4.5 Emotional Stars 🌟

Whew.....I need a minute!! This one is hard to put into words, but I'll try my best.

Every once in a while a book comes along and grips you so tight that it stays with you long after you've finished reading....this one was it! It was raw, it was emotional and it was deep....with that being said I loved it, I didn't necessarily love it in a way that I'm eager to re-read right away because the story was gut wrenching and affecting in a way that will leave you emotionally drained, however I will at some point. The relationship between Emory, Enzo and Ryker wasn't without conflict or problems but together they found a way to make it work and find the love they've been needing to heal and calm their troubled souls. I would definitely recommend this read....be warned, get the tissues ready...it is just that gripping!!!

Unchained Forgiveness is a very dark mmm romance.
I say very dark for a reason. This story is pretty soul destroying so don’t say you haven’t been warned.
You’ll need to have your tissues ready, be prepared to throw your kindle out the window! And brace yourself for a story nightmares are made of but coming out of it the other side with people who love you whole heartedly.
The story revolves around immense trauma, and it’s pretty hard to read. I’ve read a lot of dark romances as this ones right up there.
Ordinarily I don’t normally read a lot of mmm romance I stick with just m/m ( I don’t like sharing!! ) but it works for them in this story.
I would recommend to any dark romance fans out there but please be prepared as could be triggering.
I honestly wouldn’t know where to start to describe bits of this story so I’m not going to. I think you just need to go into it with an open mind and read til the end.

Agonizingly Slow Burn

This is my first book by this author and I have to say that I couldn't stop turning the pages fast enough. Emery was kidnapped and tortured and when he's finally rescued he is sent to a safe home where he meets Ryker. Emery is so traumatized but somehow he connects to Ryker and begins a slow recovery but is shocked when Enzo, the man who was also kidnapped and tortured, returns from the dead. Theirs is a long journey to recovery but with therapy and people dedicated to their well being there is light at the end of the tunnel. Warning, this book has triggers done in flashbacks. If you're looking for gratuitous sex this is not that book. Well written, complex characters, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This is an intense story. Please pay attention to the trigger warnings. This story sure held my attention. All the main characters are broken in some way. As they meet and get to know each other the stories of past abuse and previous relationships get examined. How they deal with these issues can really tear at your heart. Even the way the guys learn to deal with others is sad. This story is so easily a true to life story and that is what gives it such intense emotion. I’ve read a couple of other books by this author and each has been a story that I was unable to set down. How this author can write and deal with such human mistreatment must be hard to work on and then set aside. I only hope there are more by this author.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Definitely dark, so please heed the trigger warnings if you may be affected. I did wonder how something with the dark topics covered would turn into a MMM romance, but it did it quite elegantly. Not the smexy times you'd usually see in romance books, but highly emotive and there is a lot in the emotion space. A lot of hurt/comfort, but given the topics covered, was not a surprise. My first read of Autumn Winchester and I found it to be well written and easy to read. Will definitely be on the look for more.

I received an ARC for an honest and voluntary review.

I enjoyed this story of Emery, Ryder and Enzo, especially the relationship between Ryder and Emery as Emery tries to process and heal from an experience that nearly destroyed him. It is extremely difficult to write a poly relationship where every member gets what feels like equal time and attention and so that the reader comes to understand everyone in the relationship. I think this book missed that a bit as I didn't understand Enzo as completely as I did Ryder and Emery. That said, I would definitely read another book by this author.

Ryker helps take care of a safe house then a guy named Emery is placed in the safe house for protection he's scared and traumatized and isn't open or talkative Ryker helps with him and begins to see Emery is starting to cling to him and relax for him. Ryker has to be patient with Emery and not have him going back into his shell he was in and hopefully let him see he'll protect him and no harm will come to him. Don't read this if you have triggers it's not for you. If you don't have triggers I highly recommend this book.

If you are looking for a spicy, steamy read this book is not for you.
This is an emotional journey as Emery heals from the trauma he has experienced.
There is some darkness to this story as the abuse is referred to in flashbacks. It is not particularly graphic but it is important to note any trigger/content warnings.
