What do you call an assassin who’s had a change of heart? A coward? A hero? Or Talvi Marinossian?
Just when Annika thought she and Talvi were headed off into the sunset of marital bliss, duty calls. Pushed to the limits of his moral code, Talvi must choose between the empire he serves and the woman he loves.
But first, a detour…straight into the half-demon heart of enemy territory, where Talvi enters into a perilous arrangement with the ruler of the largest kingdom in the Ellunian Empire—
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Fallon Blackwood
Sacred Son of Sinaryos
Admiral of the Royal Sinaryan Navy
Keeper of the Chimeras
And through his ancient bloodline, a direct descendant of the first demonborn dark elves.
In other words, he’s not someone you want to let down.
In no uncertain terms, Prince Fallon warns Talvi that if he can’t keep his end of the bargain, he won’t be the one who suffers the most. Taking her husband’s advice to “just be her charming self,” Annika must do everything she can to survive her stay at Blackwood Castle. Faced with deadly chimeras, a sadistic prince on the prowl, and a court whose opinion of her changes like the tides, it might take more than the song of a samodiva to win them over.
For Talvi and Annika, the stakes have never been higher.

The long awaited continuation and conclusion has finally come and, as is the case with the majority of the books in the series, while I liked it I also really hated it.
Tavli and Annika moved past past mistakes, heartbreaks and jealousy and could finally be together for real … or so I thought. I don’t understand why the author keep splitting them apart over and over and over again, but I had at least hoped that she wouldn’t for the conclusion of their story. Silly me in thinking that because thrice again they were split apart and weren’t together more than a little at the end and at the beginning. Why, I don’t understand but I’m starting to suspect that the author is trying to conceal the fact that she doesn’t know how to truly write romance, at least in the sense of a happy relationship with them interacting and them developing together as a couple, so she has to split them up. It is such a shame because the start was perfect in the relationship department with the flirting, the bickering and everything else, and so was the end, albeit a little rushed. That just made me hate the middle so much more, because of course, the common theme of “everyone with a dick who isn’t related to her wants Annika” made it’s infamous reappearance. Sprinkle the Mary Sue and special snow flake syndrome on top and you finally found how to make the disappoint in the worst of ways.
I’m not kidding. It was apparently not enough that Annika was human-turned fae, with the song of a siren and the sexual appeal of a temptress. She of course had to get even more powers, be wanted and adored by everyone in the “enemy kingdom” despite given no concrete reason to. Hell, the story even went so far as to insinuate that Fallon loved Annika more than he did oh you know, the mother of his child that he fought tooth and nail to keep at his side through his own series! Way to completely crap on their relationship. Even Novi liked Annika after her husband kissed her like she was the last source of water on earth. Like excuse me, what? Also how come everyone is so rational about betrayal? I don’t want to spoil too much but I’ll say this; no way in hell Fallon would have been forgiven so easily in real life after what he did. They acted like he only just accidentally stepped on someone’s toes, not (imagine spoilers here). It doesn’t matter that he had an explanation and a reason for it. No one is so rational in a situation like that where they can just accept that reason and move on.
The whole plot was just underwhelming and infuriating, especially since the prophecy involving Annika and Talvi had been so hyped up throughout the whole series and the end result was just disappointing, like really? That was all it was to it? The only thing I liked was the beginning and end, due to the romance. The middle can disappear in a dark hole.
I was so excited when the author announced that there would be a book 5 in the Annika Brisby series. I was even more excited when I saw that Talvi and Annika would finally be together again. Then, my heart sunk because the author announced that she was ending this series. So, when the author sent out advanced reader copies to her team, there was zero hesitation on my end to read this book. I am happy that I did because this was probably the BEST book in this series.
Song of the Samodiva is the fifth book in the Annika Brisby series. You cannot read this book as a standalone. You need to start at book one to understand any relationships (except for Fallon and Novi’s) and backstories. You will be confused if you start with this book. The relationships and backstories are so intertwined that starting the series at book five will turn you off. So consider yourself warned!!
I am going to put a trigger warning up. If you have been following my blog for any time, you know that I only put trigger warnings up if I feel it needs it. Song of the Samodiva needs it. The triggers are attempted rape, rape with fingers (I wasn’t sure how to word that), kidnapping, alcohol use, drug use, and PTSD. If any of these triggers you, I strongly suggest not reading Song of the Samodiva.
Song of the Samodiva starts shortly after the events of The Darkest of Dreams. Talvi and Annika are on their way to the kingdom of Sinaryos to talk to Crown Prince Fallon. They have news that might be of interest to him. The only thing is that Fallon and Talvi are from rival kingdoms, and they DO NOT trust or like each other. The news that Talvi is so eager to tell Fallon: Dillion, the true Crown Prince, is alive and being held in the same prison that Talvi had just been released from. Fallon sends Talvi to break Dillion out of jail with a group of his subjects. To ensure that he comes back, Fallon holds Annika hostage. While Talvi is off on his mission, Annika tries her best to stay out of trouble. But trouble seems to find Annika, and it finds her in a big way. Or will she end up paying for both her and Talvi’s mistakes? And more importantly, can Talvi bring Dillion home?
It took me a minute to realize that the author brought together the characters from the Novi Navarro series and the Annika Brisby series. The way she brought them together was fantastic, and I was so happy to see Novi and Fallon together and happy. I also realized that Annika needed Novi’s perspective (along with a couple of other characters) to unravel the prophecy given at Talvi’s birth. I was super excited when it was finally revealed, and I can’t wait to see what future Novi Navarro books will do with it.
I loved how the author wrote Annika’s character for this book. She was funny, sweet, and strong when she needed to be. She walked a wire-thin line in Fallon’s court, and she did it with grace. It helped that she could sing and play the guitar like no one’s business. I did worry for her after the events at the theater. Let’s say that I thought that her and Talvi’s love story would never get the second chance that it needed.
Talvi wasn’t around for a good part of the book. After he told Fallon about Dillion, he was shipped out to rescue him with many Sinaryans’ who hated him. There was a point in the book where I wondered if he was coming back.
The plotline with Annika, Novi, and Fallon was wonderfully written. I was taken aback by how attracted Fallon was to Annika UNTIL I realized that she was part samodiva. That race of fae is inherently attractive to any/all fae. So, Fallon’s reaction to Annika (as well as the kiss/blood sharing) was very typical. What wasn’t typical was what Annika did after (not that I blamed her) or her punishment.
The plotline with Talvi and the Sinaryan Navy was just as well written when the focus was on him. I can’t say that I was surprised by what happened once the boat got to prison. I was disappointed but not surprised. Then there was nothing until the end of the book. Nothing was mentioned about any of those people with Talvi getting in trouble. I will go out on a limb and say “Maybe,” but I’m not sure.
There was a subplotline with Heron that didn’t make sense to me. I understood why the author chose to write him in, but I wonder how Heron and the other assassin will tie into the Novi Navarro series if that’s where the author is going.
The sex scenes were just as graphic as in the other books. I wasn’t expecting any less. The sexual tension that was inherent with Annika was woven into every scene.
The end of Song of the Samodiva was interesting. The author left so much open with Fallon and Novi. But she also wrapped up Annika and Talvi’s storyline (and the series) in a way that I loved!!!
I would recommend Song of the Samodiva to anyone over 21. There are the triggers I mentioned above. There is also graphic sex, language, and violence.
Wow! Just wow! If I could give Song of the Samodiva ten stars, I would. This is the best book I have read in a long time, and I have been reading some pretty good stuff lately. I can’t say enough good things about this one.
This is technically the fifth book in the Annika Brisby series, and supposedly the last one. But it also merges with the Novi Navarro series, and the combination is stunning.
In this episode, Talvi and Annika meet Fallon and Novi. Talvi is supposedly there to speak to King Balerin about his oldest son, Dillon, wanting to come back home. Instead, he is picked up and brought before Prince Fallon. The ultimate result of that conversation, which doesn’t exactly go well, is that Talvi is promptly sent off with some people working for Fallon to rescue Dillon or die trying. Meanwhile, Annika is to be held hostage until their return. Neither of them is permitted to so much as return to their hotel room.
Eventually, Novi finds out about Annika and befriends her. She has Annika made her handmaid so she can walk about the castle rather than being confined to a single room. Novi also introduces her to her favorite Chimera, Kai, and Kai allows her to fly with him.
They find out that Annika can sing, and she has a brief success singing for the castle’s residents after dinner one night. But this has bad consequences for her because it draws out Fallon’s other brother, Tristan, who had fallen ill about the time Novi became pregnant. Tristan claims Annika’s singing has cured him, but instead of being grateful, he begins to menace her.
Meanwhile, the effort to rescue Dillon has not gone well, and Fallon’s agents return reporting that Talvi is dead. When she hears this, Annika’s life seems to hit a low point, but it gets worse before it gets better. Even when the true meaning of Annika’s prophecy reveals itself, it only seems to cause her more problems.
We are promised that, although this is the end of the Annika Brisby series, we will see more of Annika and Talvi later. And there are still a lot of loose ends for Novi and Fallon to work on in Sinaryos.
Good Read. I will say that you obviously need to read the previous books in the Annika Brisby series, but you should also read the Navi Navarro Chronicles Series books 1-2.
While this book does close up quite a few loose ends for Annika and Talvi. I will say that I do wish they had more page time together. I know this is the last book for them, but I would love another book where they are together for all of it. It sucks that they haven't had a full book together since book one. :(
I do want to say that even though this books is great and well written, there is forced sexual acts.
This book leaves us where The Darkest Dream leaves off. Annika and Talvi traveling to give the news that Prince Dillon is still alive and in prison. Once the news of Prince Dillion is delivered they are again separated, Talvi to retrieve the prince and Annika is kept at the castle as incentive to return.
I liked the relationship between Navi and Annika, I loved how it was instant. I also liked that we got to see more of Prince Fallon and Navi's relationship. Prince Triston is again smudging the story and I can say that I like him even less in this book than I did the other series.
There are some twists and turns and places that leave you wondering why or what is going on. We keep wondering if/when Talvi will return.
The book was a good end to the series, with enough left open that we could get more in the future. I can see them showing up if we get more from the Navi Navarro Series or another spin off from there. I would love to see more of all of them.
I read/listened to the audiobook of this and I have to say it was great just like the previous ones. Nick Cracknell is amazing. I love how when Annika is singing we get to hear music in the background as well as a singer singing. Amazing. I am very happy I read this book.
This is the fifth and final book in The Annika Brisby series by Emigh Cannaday, and Song of the Samodiva does not disappoint!
I love how much the characters, especially Annika and Talvi, have developed throughout the entire series, but they really shone, individually and as a couple, in this book.
I also really enjoyed how this book intertwined so beautifully with another of the author's series- The Novi Navarro Chronicles.
Parts of this book are dark and gritty, and deal with some uncomfortable topics, but, as a woman who has been in a similar situation as Annika finds helself in, it's also relatable, and I liked how the author dealt with it. FYI Talvi delivers some perfectly poetic justice on his wife's behalf, and I think I would swoon if my husband did the same for me.
Song of the Samodiva is a book that made me laugh and cry, love and hate, and there were several times I wondered how the book was going to even get to an end, but I absolutely could not put it down!
Highly recommend reading this book, or the whole series if you haven't already, if you love escaping into a magical world where elves, fairies, wood nymphs, vampires, lycans, unicorns and chimera roam, and a 300 year old prophecy is finally fulfilled by a sassy red-haired songstress, who was once human with samodiva heritage, but became so much more by marrying her soul mate.
☆ I received an ARC of this book by the author, which in no way sways my honest opinion as stated in my review ☆
I'm stumped. I have been following this series since 2016. I've devoured every book and disappointed with the long wait for this story. I reread the series before starting this and thought about reading Ms Cannaday other series as I hear it was tied into this final installment- but to be honest I'm glad I didn't. Now that I have read this story I think I would have truly been disappointed with Novi & Fallon "great love" being basically belittled in this story. I definitely think that Fallon actions and reactions along with Novi inaction made what I would think a couple to have their own series regarding just degraded them. It truly is sad. I have always given the Annika series 5 stars- and I actually pressed 5 stars as soon as it popped up on the final page but when I went to check out the Novi series and read the blurb it hit me how off putting this story left me regarding them. Which sucks because I do love Talvi & Annika I wish things went down a little different. Cut out alot of Annika interaction with Fallon- and story would have been great. With their connection and no clear understanding of it- I really don't see how this can be the end of Annika and Talvi story. I really hope its not as i truly want them to have an HEA, without Finn and now Fallon part of the equation.
A fantasy worth fantasising about. Loved it like I loved all her books of Annika Brisby Series. The series however can’t come to an end. Come on Emigh, the last page said the end, it was a shock for me, I was thinking there would be more. Emigh Cannaday had me hooked from the first book of this series, “The Flame and the Arrow! Her characters Annika and Talvi had me rooting for them from the start, Talvi sister Yuri I just wanted to bitch slap from the start, Finn Talvi’s brother, oh what a character almost made me feel Annika should end up with him and not Talvi. I just want to say that’s how a great writer hooks you up to her characters and books. I could say more but I will stop here for the next review I give after rereading her books at least ten more times. She is that good ,Emigh, you are magic. Write more, don’t end things here, loved it and looking forward to more

Wow! What a brilliant book! The final book in the series does not disappoint and may be Emigh Cannaday’s best work so far. I love the possible side lines to the story that could lead to another book and another direction. You know the author has captured the essence of the story when you keep reading and just want more. I could not put the book down to the point my partner said have you finished reading yet? Talvi and Annikas story takes many turns with some moments creating angst in the reader. The strength, love and commitment of the main characters carries the reader on a journey to a worlds so different from our own but maybe similar when you think about this books strong message of loyalty and truth. Thank you taking me on this journey Emigh Cannaday.
WOW! I was totally torn waiting for this book, desperate to read it but also dreading it as I knew it was the final book in the Annika Brisby Series. I really wasn't disappointed either, Emigh's writing has just got stronger with each book and the final one is fantastic. I'm not going to say too much as I don't like giving spoilers but boy o boy you will not be disappointed. I don't think it's the last we will hear of Talvi and Annika, well I hope not I love them so much. I can see further books develope bringing other characters to the forefront......well I'm hoping so......... hint hint Emigh! 100% recommend you read this book guys! Absolutely fantastic....I would give 10 stars if possible :-)
Another highly enjoyable read in the Annika Brisby series from Emigh Cannady. Be sure to read the first four books that lead up to this one, which I hope will not be Annika and Talvi's final full length novel. It's a wonderful action packed romantic series that follows the couple's union and struggle to make living in two worlds work. Making relationships work is hard enough in our world, but throw in another magical world full of elves, vampires, druids, assassins and samodivas and the complications can be down right life threatening. Emigh Cannady has said Annika and Talvi will appear in other characters' stories, but I'm not sure that's going to be enough for me or their other fans.
The journey of watching these two lovers evolve from lust-attractioned naivety to life partners has been epic. The external and internal battles the couple face and the way they surpassed my hopes for the characters has been awesome to read. The end has been bittersweet as I’ve, read and re-read the series, each time I notice more details and fall more in love with the story, and I don’t want to let them go. I know this author will surprise us all and I have a feeling these characters will pop up from time to time. If you need a fantasy-filled, happy ever after, don’t look any farther, this is the series for you!!!!
I absolutely loved this series! I went back every so often to see if the 5th book had been released. I would read the first four and be so bummed when it ended and the fifth book still wasn’t out. Now I’ve finally had a chance to reread them and finish the series. I must say, I was not disappointed! This series was a whirlwind and I can’t wait to read more about the world they live in! Now that I’ve read the new characters I’m dying to know more about how they came to be. If you are looking for something to pull you in, keep you up for just one more chapter and totally blow your world apart then you must read this series!
I am sad to say goodbye to Talvi and Annika I loved their story I thought they were perfect together. So different, worlds apart from starting out one human and one elf. So many adventures so much excitement till they reached this last journey together. They finished their travels with a scary sometimes nail-biting adventure. I worried for them more than I had in the past but their love held true till the end. Talvi ever the hero, and Anika is his beloved. Perfect, just perfect a job well done. *****
First off I absolutely Love this book! It was everything I could have hoped for and more. This story was very much worth the wait! To get the best experience from this story I recommend reading the first four books as well as the Novi Navarro books as well, they are all available in Kindle Unlimited and really help with understanding this story. I would give it 10 stars if I could! I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this TOTALLTY HONEST Review Because I Choose to and Feel that this is an Outstanding Story!!!
This anticipated addition to the Annika Brisby series does not fail to deliver. It is well timed with developed characters that leave the reader engaged and captivated. It is extremely gratifying to read a series that only continues to improve with each book. Too often I read series that do exactly the opposite. If you love fantasy fiction then you must give this series a try. The books build perfectly one upon the last and leaves you anxious for the next book!
This is absolutely not the case with Emigh Cannaday’s books. She has continued to develop as an outstanding author.
This has been an unique, interesting series! Enjoy the Elf element, and the whole human, elf in love scenario. Annika and Talvi have gone through some crazy times and have continued to prove their connection is solid. Wonderful connection between these two! This book has more craziness and adventure; twists and suspense! I’d recommend reading from the beginning for the best reading experience; this series has been a journey. It’s been an entertaining, fun series!
I receive ARC copy for my honest review. This book has left me wanting more, just like all Emigh's other books, to the point where i think i need to reread the whole series again. Talvi and Annika travel to a different Kingdom and trouble is never far behind them. I don't know how so much trouble can find these two all the time (hahahahahaha) And again the ending has been left open for more. I LOVED THIS BOOK if i could give 10 stars i would. a Must read for all fantasy lovers.
A fantastic story. I have really enjoyed this series and am sad to see the end of the story of Talvi and Annika. A lot of twists in this story, a book once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. It was great seeing how their relationship has grown and matured through the books. I found this a very entertaining series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
I love the Annika Brisby series and all of it's well developed characters. While I feel that there's so much left unresolved with characters such as Finn and Yuri, it was nice to see resolution with Annika and Talvi. Once again, their relationship is being put to the test in this book. However, Annika and Talvi seem to mature as a couple to avoid making past mistakes. They both realize that relationships take work to be successful.
This book was a long time coming and I was definitely worth the wait. I love these characters and the author did a fantastic job blending together both series set in this world. And though I'm a little sad to see Annika and Talvi's story end it was a satisfying conclusion and I look forward to seeing glimpses of their life together in future stories. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
Why I could wait for the last book to Talvi and Annika's story its seems like it was several years since I read book # 4 in the series so I was a little confused on what was going on for a couple chapters. The books are long but if you love fantasy ,intrigue, and the same people in the storyline then you'll love this series. I would like a good epilogue with Talvi and Annikas baby's somewhere in there.
Last book of the series and what a pleasure it was. So many twists and turns along the way that kept me glued to their roller coaster ride. Well worth the wait to read such an amazing conclusion to Talvi and Annika story. Can’t wait to see what other stories this talented story teller Emigh Cannaday will bring us next.
This would be one of the best series I’ve read this year. Highly recommend. I just couldn’t put any of the books down and even better they are all on Audible, with great narration. I generally don’t read books twice and yet I’m feeling like starting at the beginning again.
Song of the Samodiva: The Annika Brisbane Series Book 5
This was a great series. I wasn’t sure what to expect initially, but the fascinating plot line, not to mention the characters that showed realistic emotional growth throughout the series, kept me hooked. I really hope Ms. Cannaday continues to add to this series.
Another fantastic, brilliant book. Awesome characters to draw you in forever. There’s no reading this book once. Loved everything about the adventure and the writing helped me feel as if I was there.
Another great book from Emigh Lots of unexpected twists that kept me guessing and reading well in to the night was not ready for it to end though can’t wait to see what she comes up with next !!!!
Stared reading this the day it released, and it has been a while since I've read the others but I enjoyed it. For me it started out a little slow but got better as I read.
Can't wait to see where things go with Heron and Pavlo.
