less of a productivity book and more of a literary slap in the face, yet nonetheless pretty enjoyable for those who need it. the kind of read that won’t change your life but might get you off your ass.
Honestly glad I didn't pay for this as it was free on Audible. There's some tidbits of good advice in here, but certainly nothing you haven't seen before on an inspirational poster or Instagram post. It dishes them out but doesn't go deeper on anything at all. The title is intentionally shocking to get peoples attention. Wouldn't recommend.
Well. Obvious enough in terms of content but I quite enjoyed the tone - a kind of matey pep talk in line with the title that certainly puts you in the right general mood to tackle stuff.
Matthew Kimberley (2019) GET A F*CKING GRIP (AUDIOBOOK) Audible - John Blake/Bonnier Books UK
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 out of 5 stars
Audible writes, "You know the key to having more energy has nothing to do with crystals and chakras...and everything to do with how much sleep you get. You know that neglecting your friends will leave you destitute and lonely...but you're still too damn lazy to pick up your phone and get in touch. You know you could get through your to-do list in half the time...yet you're still stalking your ex on Facebook. You know you just need a kick up the backside...and that's what you'll find in this book. Get a F*cking Grip is the self-help book for people who hate self-help, offering simple no-nonsense advice that you can implement into all areas of your life, allowing you to get on with everything you've always wanted to do. Learning how to get a f*cking grip is the key to taking back control of your life. ===== I THOROUGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE PEOPLE! It does voodoo levels of good to your motivation levels. It's funny, sarky, to the point, calls a spade a spade, mocks all the flimsy excuses and calls out BS where BS is. None of it is rocket science... you just have to get a f*cking grip as the book title suggests. And its only 4 or so hours long to listen to. So no-one has anything to lose. ===== #MatthewKimberley #GetAFuckingGrip #Book #Books #Read #Reads #Reading #Review #Reviews #BookReview #BookReviews #GoodReads #Audiobook #Audiobooks #Audible
I enjoyed this audiobook, most of the time. Matthew Kimberley has a great narrative voice, so I really liked listening to him read the book. I felt the humour, and ire, were so well presented as an audiobook so it was the perfect format to enjoy it in.
There are lots of obvious things in this book to help you with your life - this isn't a secret, or a failing, the book is a self-proclaimed book of obvious things to do that you probably already know. Somehow, hearing someone bluntly tell you that, and know the lies you tell yourself, does make it a bit better.
There were two distinct areas I found helpful; these will likely be different for you, but for me the two most helpful discussions surrounded allowing what other people think to not bother you, and tackling your anxiety or guilt surrounding your otherwise very nice life. I think that regardless of what issue you might bring to the table though, this book has a bit of everything. It discusses health, wealth, happiness, communication, dealing with people, dealing with your own habits and much more, and each of these messages for life are short snippets you could genuinely find time for on your commute or in the bathroom!
There are some annoying parts. There are conflicting discussions - for example, don't let your wobbly bits bother you (good advice) but also don't eat junk food because it will give you wobblier bits. It's not bad advice, but it seems a bit counterintuitive in the delivery. Equally, some of the things you should do - according to the author - are just not realistic (throwing out your television - whilst also being encouraged not to waste money!). Some are intended to be a joke though, so this isn't often a problem.
So it's a book about finding more hours in your day by chucking out the wasted hours and taking responsibility for those hours. Just get on with it - rather than lying to yourself. There's a lot here to make you feel empowered to be okay with who you are, and to accept that other people really don't matter half as much as you think, or think about you half as much as you assume.
I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the Audible version and the narration only enhanced the quality of the book.
This will not be everyone’s cup of tea. I doubt most will have the courage to bury their television in the back yard, which is what the author recommends. That advice came early on, and really hooked me into the book because I thoroughly agree with it.
Some excellent life tips here, but many may not find them practical. I for one, certainly did and have implemented a number of them already. I haven’t had a television for over a month due to moving interstate, and I barely miss it ;)

As the author puts it this is a collection of common sense things. My favorite being regarding the relationship with your children: If you know how to hug, hug them, if you don't, learn.
I would recommend listen to it. It is narrated by the author himself and the ironically tone of his voice matches perfectly the ironical tone of the book.
A light self-help book to remind us of the basic things.
I had the audiobook of this one. I absolutely loved it! I think it’s easy to get down about things in life & this book really gave me a kick up the backside & can get you out of a downward cycle. Really good tips told in a no nonsense way. Some excellent practices I will be using for sure. This really is a life changing book.
A fairly good book. The end message is excellent however it feels forced funny. I love a personal development book which doesn't take itself to seriously but this one falls a little flat.
A book to be read at least once in your life! It’s pretty much staying the obvious and things that you already know, but when you read it or you’re told by someone else, it all sinks in.
It is exactly as advertised, everything written in here does already exsit in our subconscious, we simply forgot about it. It's indeed a good refresh to get a fucking grip !
Interesting book that collect all together concepts for self-grow that you can find in other places. Only good to have all of them united in the same place
