They say humans utilise a mere ten percent of their brains’ potential. Disgraced neurosurgeon Klaus Jancke believes this unused brain matter holds the key to supernatural powers.
The Notorious Six are the UK’s most evil serial killers, incarcerated at HMP Longstone, Gwynedd, Wales. They are Dr. Jancke’s test subjects, and the neurosurgeon has just made a breakthrough.
Using powers bestowed upon him by Jancke, Freeman Gander, his younger brother, Mitchell and Freeman’s psychotic girlfriend, Autumn Hacker (who was once one of the Ganders’ victims) break out of Longstone Prison and decide to pay someone special a ‘visit’.
With a number of his prison guards brutally murdered during the break out, Wade calls in fixer, Jake Madden to apprehend the three escaped convicts. When the bus the trio escaped in is found abandoned nearby, Wade realises where the murderous trio are heading, and races against time to save his daughter, Ryleigh and her friends.
Wade has additional the public can’t get wind of the tests going on in the prison basement, or his wealthy and powerful paymasters won’t be happy.
D C Brockwell lives in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, with his wife, Beks and rescue cat, Olivia. He works as a dental technician for Elite Dental Studios in the day, and writes crime/horror/action and adventure/romance stories in the evenings and weekends. After completing his dental technicians’ course at Lambeth College in March 2018, he sat down and started taking his writing more seriously, completing five first drafts of novels in a year.
A graduate of criminology and criminal justice studies at the University of Portsmouth, he has always had an interest in crime, specifically abnormal psychology. It was while studying criminology that he penned his first (unpublished) novel, which, he says, will never see the light of day.
He self-published his first romance novel, The Southern Belles in July 2019, under his pseudonym, Katie Simpkins, a name both he and Beks chose together.
His first crime novel is a contemporary and gritty crime drama.
Yes, I'm having trouble forming the right words for this. It is so FRICKING AWESOME! Seriously people. This book. Damn.
Yes, it is gory. I was warned about that from the author ahead of time. That didn't bother me. Would have been a perfect read during "spooky" season.
It's the little details that Brockwell adds in.. .like in one scene where they are drinking Jacob's Creek Wine. Gotta say, that little detail really drew me in because their Cabernet aged in Irish Whiskey Barrels is one of my favs so it helps make parts of the story incredibly relateable. Not that I've been drinking it in a barn while getting laid and fantasizing about another person before getting brutally murdered but I digress...
Honestly, the gore in the story didn't bother me in the slightest. Even if I hadn't been warned, it wouldn't turn me away. It's appropriate gore. As in, Brockwell has the gore in the right spots and while it's graphic in detail, it's not the focus of the story and it literally just helps draw you into it, rather than turn you away.
The truly horrifying aspect of this is how fascinated the doctor is by the experiment and all the variables that come up. To think that people really do function and think along those lines and actually have in the past, and I'm sure currently do as well...that is the truly terrifying aspect.
The other terrifying aspect that Brockwell manages to capture so well is that the twist from the doctor, you can picture happening in your head. Right now. And once your brain realizes that, you get this chill from the inside out. Truly a master at his craft.
You know those moments in a horror movie where you see the killer do something and you physically flinch but keep your eyes glued to the screen? That's this book. From page 1. That is this book. You have to keep reading it. It compels you to keep going.
Have you ever read a book, got to the massive cliffhanger of an ending and threw the book? Had this not been on my Kindle, I would have. The cliffhanger at the end.... ARGH
This story was written so insanely well. I legit read it in one morning. I could not put it down! Brockwell has achieved the perfect balance of story, gore, setting the scene, and yet throwing in twists and turns you never see coming. Something not easily done in this genre. I cannot wait for book 2. Like, I will take a vacation day from work, send the kiddo to Grandma's - whatever it takes to sit and read book 2 in one sitting as soon as it's available.
In a prison which houses the most hardened of criminals, experiments conducted on six of the worst offenders go horrifically wrong and so begins a rampage of carnage and bloodshed. With gruesome deaths and plenty of gore, this is a story of science gone wrong and revenge. The deaths are without a doubt inventively bloody and at times stomach churning, but for me this only added another dimension to this story of horror. But there is also a story of teenage angst running throughout as the younger cast run the gauntlet of love, friendship and betrayal. I found The Escape a great read, devouring it in less than a day as I needed to know how it would end. But when it did it left me wanting more. This book is definitely not for the faint hearted and I for one , cannot wait for the next instalment. I just hope I don’t have to wait too long!
If you like your books gruesome and truly blood, guts and gore galore then this is definitely for you. Escaped convicts reaping torturous havoc on the local community, I won’t write about the storyline as you’ve read the blurb, or maybe you haven’t but your in for a great read.
A great distraction to take your mind off things. Very unusual to have so much gore. Reminds me of a couple of books I read about 10 yrs ago. Set in the North of England I think. Very amusing and astonishing.
If you want a book that gets you right from the first sentence to the last.....then this is a book you should read.
Gory..Yes. Unpredictable...Yes. Page turning..most definitely. This book has everything you want and so much more.
A high security prison with one thousand inmates but there are six that make this book exceptional. Six inmates that have been experimented on to use most of our brains that we never use, to make them superhuman. A government agency that has unlimited funds. What could possibly go wrong? Absolutely fantastic and can't wait for the next book.
What a story!! It was gory, suspenseful, gory, edge of your seat read, did I say gory? If you like Gore and suspense with supernatural you need too read this! I absolutely loved it! There are some sexual parts within the book but the story as a whole is brilliant! I'm looking forward too reading the 2nd book!!
