Tempting the Vicar

Rate this book
After his twin brother pulls a foolish prank, Reverend Daniel Wayward's life is now decidedly complicated. With his family, his parish, and even his reputation at risk, there's only one way to avoid utter ruin—by swapping places with his rakish, wicked twin. And the second Daniel steps foot into his brother's worldly and sinful life in London, he's completely caught by temptation of the most enticing, green-eyed kind.

Miss Olivia St. Peters knows the son of the duke is a dangerous fellow, but something in those hooded, hungry blue eyes makes her blood sing with pleasure. She's determined to have this Wayward noble, no matter what Society—or even her father—says about the match. And if that means playing with fire, she'll gladly burn...

The more Daniel resists the oh-so-inviting charms of Olivia, the more determined she is to have him. Now he's caught between his vows of faith and the lure of sweet temptation. And the only thing standing between his heart and his immortal soul is one unforgivable deception...

✨In the most polite way possible, what the FUCK did I just read?✨

Highlights:

✨Kissing didn’t begin until around 70% and it was with ANOTHER WOMAN. LITERALLY HE KISSED ANOTHER WOMAN BEFORE OLIVIA. I DONT CARE THAT HE WAS REPULSED.

✨I mentioned repulsed, yes he was also repulsed by how vulgar the woman who kissed him was (it’s a long story but she was his brother’s former paramour). She said she was going to think about him while she pleasured herself and he was like WOW how did my beloved brother put up with her vulgar soul? Twas at that point I made a note that we were most certainly not getting hot sex lmao. (I was more or less correct.)

✨Only to THEN allow Olivia to SUCK HIS DICK LIKE A POPSICLE. But that wasn’t vulgar??? Hypocrite.

✨WHICH led me to assume that since they both went to down(town) on each other, then there would for SURE be penetrative sex. NOPE. The fuckers got married and then their chaste wedding kiss promised “many blissful nights.” THAT’S IT. HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO GO ABOUT MY DAY KNOWING THIS FUCKING CONUNDRUM EXISTS. Like the scene was relatively hot and semi-explicit but they did NOT round the bases! I won’t settle for a double in a genre full of homeruns. Like the scene wasn’t good enough to stand on its own. The author can clearly write sex? So why not??? Is it because he was so holy? Because let me tell you the man was not that holy.

✨We literally got ONE FUCKING SCENE THAT INCLUDED THE ONLY KISS. I SWEAR TO MOTHER FUCKING GOD THEY KISSED AND THEN DISROBED AND THEN ORAL ALL IN LIKE FIVE PAGES. THEIR FIRST KISS. WHAT KIND OF PACING IS THAT. HOW DO YOU JUST DO THAT.

✨There was a villain dude who just had absolutely nothing happen to him? She was gonna keep using to him to make Daniel jealous but then it just fizzled and we never heard from him again. In no way would he just go away quietly??? He was also super secretive and they made constant note of the secrecy but we never learned about it???? What?? The book just said her father ended the courtship in certain terms. Like that’s all! It happened off the page! What!

✨Idk I also wanted a virgin hero but he was a “former rake” who was very ashamed but also very proficient apparently. That doesn’t affect the rating it just rankled. He also used his faith to seem morally superior to others and it also rankled. I understand faith would be a part of this but it just wasn’t my cup of tea (but really isn’t a fault of the book).

✨He was also a SUPERIOR dick munch to her. Like he was an asshole on many occasions because he needed to “break her heart” and then get out of dodge. It was just not enjoyable. Olivia was fine and good but lord save me from the rest. Also him even pretending to take court back up with the singer was just such a low blow.

✨He also had a random thought to find her a suitable husband but nothing ever came from that. Like he never tried.

✨So this book worked in tandem with the first book, which was the other twin going on his own “spiritual” journey. They both fell in love in parallel. Well the end did a shitty job summarizing how Devlin succeeded in getting Mary back. It was just so vague which didn’t work to make this a stand alone book.

✨In a perverse way, I want to read book one because I’m always fucking curious no matter how badly I’ve been burned. But I shan’t because it won’t end well. I need someone to sparknotes it for me.

⭐️⭐️.5*/5 🌶.5/5

Really enjoyed the story but she was not my favorite 😬! 3.5 STARS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to say that I had mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I loved Daniel. He was so kind and sweet. Just a delightful character all around. Much of the time I did find myself feeling sorry for the poor guy!
On the other hand, I found myself disliking Olivia more and more as I continued through the story. She was conniving and manipulative, completely throwing herself at him. It was not a great look for her and in some places I found it very annoying.
The saving grace is the fact that Daniel falls hard for her. He is smitten for sure but is in such a terrible arrangement and situation, he is in a lot of pain for much of the story. The author was highly creative in the situations and arrangements as she worked around the angst and misery.
Tempting the Vicar offers a very untraditional story with some heat and fire to keep us on our toes. The unique storyline is definitely a plus with the twin twist plus the author offers a backstory that is refreshing and different from the norm of the typical Regency romance.
Reverend Daniel Wayward’s peaceful country life is turned upside down when his twin brother impersonates him and in the process breaks his leg. Because Devlin is unable to travel to an important meeting in London, he and Daniel switch places. Further complications arise when Daniel encounters Miss Olivia St. Peters, the woman his brother has been trying to avoid. Olivia knows Lord Devlin is a rake, but that doesn’t stop her from wanting him. The more Daniel tries to put her off, the more determined she is to have “him.” Now Daniel is caught between his family, his faith, and the lure of Olivia’s temptation.
This is the second book in the Wicked Waywards duo, and a spin off of the author’s previous series, Once Wicked. I highly recommend reading the first book, The Devil’s Own, as it does a better job introducing the brothers and their swap.
I liked the first book a little more than this one because it was a bit more “couple focused.” This story had more obstacles in the way, with Olivia trying to make Daniel jealous with another suitor and Daniel balancing his faith, his attraction to Olivia, and his brother’s business interests. There was just a lot going on and I would have liked more chemistry-building. Nevertheless, I enjoy LeFey’s writing and this was a quick, fun read. I would definitely look for her future releases. 2.5 stars, rounded up.
When Olivia St. Peters met Lord Devlin Wayward, she knew that she had finally found a man who wanted her for her and not for her father’s money or power. And despite her father AND Lord Devlin discouraging her attachment to him - Olivia decides that Lord Devlin Wayward is the man she is going to marry. But what she doesn't know is the man she originally met and the man she is now aggressively chasing are not the same man!
Lord Daniel Wayward is not only the son of the late Duke of Winterbourne, but he is also a country vicar and Lord Devlin’s twin. He is currently in London masquerading as his twin after his brother pulled a prank that landed him in bed with a broken leg and a lot of people believing he is Daniel. Now Daniel has reluctantly agreed to go to London in Devlin’s place to finalize a business venture with former pirate turned privateer Mr. St. Peters and is given a vague warning that St. Peters’ daughter has a bit of tendre for him and that he will have to discourage her without destroying the business venture. Sounds simple enough. But the reality of the situation is much different than Devlin portrayed and Olivia is nothing like he told him she was. Soon Daniel finds himself falling for Olivia, but revealing his deception will ruin more than just her opinion of him, so to do the “right” thing Daniel, breaks Olivia’s heart and returns to the country, feeling guilty and heartbroken himself. Months pass and HEA doesn’t even seem like a possibility, but as Shakespeare so eloquently wrote “The course of true love never did run smooth”.
Let me start by stating that I did not read the first book in this series and I think that if I had, my review for this book would have been much different. That said, for me, this book was a miss, the deception dragged on for way too long, and not having read the previous book definitely left me at a disadvantage, as the author glossed over Devlin’s actions in order to prevent spoilers. Not only that but I found Olivia to be completely unlikeable, she refused to consider anyone’s desires save her own, and then when she was unavoidably hurt, she played the victim card to the hilt. I strongly believe that if I had read the first book before reading this book, I would have still disliked Olivia, but I might have liked the overall story a bit more. Anyway, for me this book is a pass, but please don’t let that stop you from trying this book and judging for yourself, especially if you read the first book. This book is the second book in the series and I would HIGHLY recommend reading the books in order.
Thanks netgalley for the advance copy! I really wanted to love this book but I had a hard time with it. I think it relied too much on me having read the first one (which I hadn’t to be fair) and so much of the story surrounding our characters went unexplained because of it. I had to read the first chapter three times to understand what was going on, and the prank that Devlin pulled was never explained so I had no idea what happened to his leg or why it was such a big deal.
Quite a lot of the book was explained away like this- “He then explained to her what had happened and why he said what he had said. He then added how it had made him feel.” Instead of actually telling us what he said, it was brushed aside in one sentence. This happened often and was frustrating.
I didn’t understand what Olivia’s dad’s plans and motivations were, I wanted to know more about Daniel’s first love and what happened to her, and I wanted Olivia to get some dang respect. She was so interesting and cool but she wasted away over one man and was told over and over that she should have been “raised right.” She is going to be so unhappy in the country.
But seriously what happened to Daniel's first live? Did she have the kid? Did Daniel ever tell Olivia??? She more than deserves to know. The whole book felt incomplete and rushed, but it was compelling enough to keep me until the end. I’m glad I read it, but I don’t know if I’ll read more from this series.
It might just be me but I had a really hard time getting into this story. There was just way too much thinking and talking and not enough action. The characters were likeable and I understood the plot but it just didn't grab my attention. I don't usually mind a slow burn romance but this was ridiculous. Page after page of the hero and heroine just talking with nothing really happening. It just seemed to be the same thing chapter after chapter. Others might love this book but it just wasn't for me.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.
After his twin brother breaks his leg while pretending to be him, vicar Daniel Wayward is forced to go to London and take Devlin's place until the injury is healed. Though they are twins, they're completely different personalities, and Devlin's rakish lifestyle is a shock to Daniel's more conservative ways. There's also the added pressure of Miss Olivia St. Peters, the daughter of Devlin's business partner, and someone who has set her sight's on Devlin, come hell or high water. Daniel needs to discourage her, but the chemistry between them is almost too much to bear.
This book was one I was looking forward too, after reading Devlin's story in The Devil's Own, but there was something - I'm not sure what - that I just didn't click with. Daniel and Olivia were alright characters - Olivia much better though - but I felt like their story was too contrived, and dragged on far too much. I liked the first book, and wasn't as bothered by the deception in that case, but here, with the supposedly saintly Daniel, I felt a little repulsed by how long he kept the truth from Olivia. It was an alright book, but nothing perfect, and not one I'll likely go back to.
Twin Swapping, protection of reputation, mistaken identity and temptation all work hand in hand to craft this novel. This is the first book I have read by Liana LeFey and it is the second book in the Wicked Waywards series. I have not read the first book in this series but it is my understanding that the novel is a companion piece that will fill in the gaps of the other side of the story. dealing with the other swapped twin, so I am definitely interested in reading that novel to fill in other pieces of this story. I am not sure if it is more beneficial to read book one first or if it is interchangeable, but I found the synopsis of this novel to be intriguing that I definitely wanted to pick it up and give it a chance. I found Liana LeFey's writing to be engaging and well paced, her story is interesting and I was definitely invested in finding out how this twin swap would play out.
Daniel has spent most of his life pious and in service of his parish and his family while maintaining an upstanding reputation. So when his twin pulls a foolish prank, Daniel swaps places with him to help reinstate his brother's standing as well as his families reputation. Little does Daniel know that he will find himself tempted by an enticing beauty-Olivia. Olivia is determined to win over Daniel no matter the warnings of society or the wishes of her father. So using her clever mind, Olivia works on ways to make his jealous (believing him to be his twin brother) and falling more and more in love with who Daniel truly is.
The inner workings of this novel clip along as Daniel unravels information to help his brother, finds himself in the beguiling company of Olivia and tries to maintain his reputation with his religious views and the temptations of London. LeFey definitely creates an interesting story that easily keeps the reader engaged to the end, I feel like there are also moments in the novel that will be filled in with more information from the first in this series. I really enjoy that aspect that it feels like a novel that has a companion novel that will be perfect in helping to tell this full overall story of two brothers. It is very reminiscent of Julia Quinn's duology- The Lost Duke of Wyndham. I felt the overall plotting of the novel was very story but I was missing something in the romance. There was a lack of chemistry between Daniel and Olivia which ultimately left be wanting for more in the development of their relationship.
Overall, I am very interested in exploring LeFey's backlist. And If you are looking a companion series about twin brothers and swapping places than this is definitely a wonderful choice to pick up. 3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 Stars.
This is the second book in the series & I’d definitely recommend reading the previous book first. The stories are intertwined & rely heavily on the twin brothers swapping roles. Whilst I enjoyed this book I found it to be a slow paced book & a very slow burn romance. There was an awful lot of dialogue & not much action. Whilst I really liked Daniel I didn’t love him as he was a bit too goody goody for me but I found it hard to like Olivia she was too forward & self centred, she wanted to be accepted by society but was aghast when she didn’t play by their rules & so wasn’t accepted. I also didn’t feel much chemistry between the pair & there was a villain who just fizzled away. All in all an enjoyable read, which I felt scratched the surface & didn’t get down to the nitty gritty
I voluntarily received a copy of "Tempting the Vicar" via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
After his brother pulls a foolish prank, the good reverend Daniel switches places with his rake brother Devlin. Masquerading as his brother he meets the beautiful Olivia, a woman who believes herself in love with his brother. Attempting to push her away is hard as he enters into a business arrangement with her father. It gets even harder as he falls in love with her. Too bad she thinks hes his brother.
Though you can read this book as a standalone I do reccomend reading the first one first. It just makes sure you understand quite a few context clues and to understand the why of it all.
On the surface I liked both Daniel and Olivia but I found their romance a hard sell and carries the same problems as the first book. The charade does not end until the very end and the one sexual scene happens prior to Olivia finding out the truth. It was something I felt weird about in the first book and felt way weirder about in this book. Especially considering how often we are reminded he is a man of God.
Overall this is a well written slowburn romance with some really interesting characters and plot points. I just wish certain things were fleshed out more and other things were reduced.
Daniel Wayward is a kind and pious man who decided to become a vicar and repress every carnal longing after a youth mistake that he still deeply regrets. But when he’s forced to swap places with his rakish and sinful twin Devlin his life is shaken to the core by the sudden appearance of a bold beauty set to conquer Devlin’s heart…
Olivia St. Peters has been besotted by the wickedly handsome Devlin since she met him and is determined to convince him that she’s the woman for him. And when he comes back from a trip to the country somewhat changed, and for the best, she’s happy to see that now he seems inclined to succumb to her charms…
This book is the second of the series and unfortunately I didn’t read the first one, which was about the other twin, Devlin. It’s clear that the author struggled to make this book a standalone, but in my opinion she failed, because the stories of the twin brothers are too deeply intertwined for that and her solution has been somewhat awkward. I think that she should have been bolder and do a proper merge with the previous book, using some parts of that book in this. I’ve seen it done in another series and it was perfection, while here I didn’t like the hurried and emotionless explanation of Devlin’s story at all.
As for the characters, the author did a good job at fleshing out a spoiled and sometimes irritating Olivia, while I’m uncertain about my feelings for Daniel… I didn’t like the fact that his deception lasted until the very end and that instead of confessing everything to the woman he loved, Daniel preferred to push her away and hurt her. I think it’s out of character, because from his internal dialogue it’s clear that he’s too kind, too honorable to do a thing like that. So all in all, the book is still a full 4 star read because I loved the author’s writing, but I do think that the plot should have been planned better.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing, LLC for letting me read an ARC of this book through NetGalley!
"That's when she'd decided that Lord Devlin Wayward would become her husband"
"Into the lion's den, Daniel"
"You've not won until he's standing before the altar putting his ring on your finger!"
I absolutely loved this book!
I didn't have such high expectations for it given the fact that I knew exactly what I was looking for but , at the end, it really surprised me. Right where I thought action would have blossomed , it tricked me into waiting a chapter more and, at the end, I couldn't stop!
I loved how the tension between the characters built and built until a very turning point when nothing could happen but what it did!
I loved the chase that had nothing malicious in it ... well almost nothing ... and I loved the relationships and the banters and the problematics they both had to face!
I loved how determined the main female character is to fall in love and not settle down for nothing but passion and absolute love for the person she would have married. And in turn I loved the devotion and the passion of the main male character and how much troubled he was even in admitting his feelings!
The writing-style was amazing and I really loved how the author used it to manipulate words and expressions while also comparing it to the truth of one's thoughts! And don't get me even start with the connection with classical authors ...
"There's that woman who wrote Sense and Sensibility. She'd do nicely to start, if I can convince her to come"
The plot was easy to follow and you really don't need to read the first book in the series to understand this one!
Sometimes having a twin is tricky in more than one way but at the end everything turns out for the best ... which is exactly what I was looking for when I picked this book up.
I really hope to read more about this series and I absolutely recommend it, fan of Bridgerton or not!
"But it was a powerful attraction. Powerful enough to worry him"
"There in his face was the silent acknowledgment of what she knew he would never willingly admit - that he felt it, too"
This is the second in the Wicked Waywards series.
I was so curious what Daniel was doing in London after reading what Devlin was up to in The Devil's Own.  Especially how it ended he seemed kind of upset when the brothers met up again.
This is the other side of the historical romance twin swap. Daniel the Vicar goes to London to pretend to be his brother Devlin the business man but also serious rake. They couldn't be more different. Devlin had a young lady quite adamant about a suit which Daniel is aware of but still takes him by surprise.
She was not what his brother led him to believe. Despite trying to get her not to like him it only made her devise her own plans to make him jealous.
Then of course the twin swap had to revealed eventually cause things got out of control.
I loved how Olivia was a bluestocking without it even being acknowledged. It was just her and her father they lost their mother early so she sat in all his business meetings and picked up everything and even did a lot of his business dealings with him. She was clever and smart.
Daniel and Devlin surely didn’t menace words in this story. Because of a childish prank many things goes wrong, but there seemed to be one thing went right. Daniel and Olivia had their own agendas to manipulate not knowing that their agendas would cross paths. I like the dialogue among the characters. The dialogue gave the book realism along with the narrative. I liked the sweetness and the romance
Twin brothers change places when one breaks his leg and can't make it back to London for business. Daniel Wayward is the vicar of Harper's Grove. He's not comfortable impersonating his brother Devlin in London, a rake known for his scandalous reputation. Meeting his brother's business partner in London, he's swept off his feet by the man's daughter, Olivia. She knows what she wants and it's Devlin Wayward. A vicar with a guilty conscience tries to push away a persistent young lady, but it's hard when you're in love. The poor man has bruises on his knees praying for forgiveness. Not what I call an upbeat book. I feel so sorry for Daniel in his no win situation, but he's ready to give anything to win her back.
𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘄
Will his lies lead them to an irredeemable heartbreak…
I would recommend to read the first book, to better understand in which shoes Daniel landed, as it starred his twin, the rake of the two.
I had mixed feeling for Olivia, she is no missish nor demure Miss, she goes for what she wants, whatever the path she must follow. She is not mean nor haughty, but very mercenary in her pursuit of Devlin/Daniel. It was not easy to like as she uses all her assets, an other suitor to awaken the green monster or any possible means to catch her prey.
Yet in fact, she is only her father’s daughter. She follows in his steps, and while it is not wealth she is after, she has her sight on a special prize, and it is it she will have.
And while she is very set on her prey, she is no empty-headed young woman looking only to up herself on the ton’s ladder, she really wants Devlin, attracted by his rakish way. So, as she manages her father’s affairs with a hand of steel, she will do anything to win Devlin’s heart.
Daniel is the beta scholar hero, a man who protects and does not judge. He is my usual kind of hero. But something went off along the pages. I had I believe more expectations from him. But for a man of the church, he let the charade last too long. After he had ascertained she was a trustworthy intelligent person, he should have confided in her. Instead of breaking her heart by his silence and his distancing.
I am sad to say this story was not what I have expected, I did not feel a real chemistry between Daniel and Olivia, and their games went too far and for too long.
The premise: "good" and "bad" twin switch places, each falling in love with a woman they shouldn't. Daniel is a vicar who is well-respected in his local parish, while his twin, Devlin, is the complete opposite, a rake who breaks his leg due to a prank and takes on his brother's identity. Devlin has put his brother in an awkward situation, as Daniel wants to maintain his reputation with his congregation and doesn't want to be seen as complicit in Devlin's deception. Unfortunately, Devlin has business he must immediately tend to in London. So, Daniel ends up traveling to London in his brother's place in order to maintain their ruse.
Complications arise when Daniel encounters Olivia, the young woman his brother has been trying to avoid. Olivia has been pursuing Devlin avidly, with marriage in mind, and free-wheeling Devlin wants no commitments. Daniel finds himself strongly attracted to Olivia, however, and while she tries different tactics to catch his interest, Daniel must find ways of his own to keep their relationship platonic.
Liana LeFey is an excellent writer, but I must admit, I typically prefer historical romances where the hero and heroine have a bit more chemistry. While there is flirtation and subtle hints of sexuality, with Daniel frequently tempted by Olivia's charms and having to temper his physical reactions, this book is very low-key when it comes to the romance. The humor is dry, not of the "chuckle out loud" variety. I admired Daniel, but he was a bit self-righteous for my taste. Also, Olivia's tunnel vision when it came to Devlin/Daniel became frustrating at times; I wish the storyline had focused more on her demonstrating her intelligence and ability than chasing a man. I did think her relationship with her father was well fleshed-out.
Daniel's internal struggles, along with facing his childhood nemesis, inched this book up to 4 stars for me, even though everything resolves a bit too quickly to be believable. While Daniel seems like an ethical person, and his religious devotion is emphasized, it's surprising that he was willing to continue his ruse and deceive Olivia as long as he did.
I would recommend this book if you gravitate toward "sweet and clean" Regencies involving mistaken identities. The author's writing style is smooth and there are no glaring anachronisms.
Even though I have read the first in this series, I feel as though a prologue going back to the events that set these stories in motion would have been helpful. I know the first touched on the plan to switch places, but so often in the story, we hear about how Daniel was guilted into doing it and I would have liked to have seen that before we dove into his story.
On the whole, I enjoyed this story. There were some moments of really enjoyable banter between Daniel and Olivia, and I enjoyed watching them interact and the way that she slowly won him over.
What I didn't enjoy was the fact that Daniel nearly opened up to Olivia with the truth before certain lines were crossed, but at the last second he didn't, keeping up the ruse that he was his brother and giving her false hopes. Speaking of crossing lines, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that this supposedly virtuous man engaged in those specific acts with a woman who didn't even know his real name.
I also wasn't keen on the way he tried to dissuade her from her attentions of him (specifically seeming to flaunt his mistress under her nose). The constant back and forth of "let's be friends" and "I must break her heart" was also a bit off-putting. I wish they had just stuck with the frien route until he was able to come clean with her (and maybe a bit more communication between the brothers wouldn't have gone amiss). They could have kept up the ruse with Daniel writing to his brother AS his brother just to keep him appraised of the situation). This way neither would have been surprised to have learned that the other fell in love with the exact woman they were meant to get rid of.
Although this story wasn't one of my favorites, the author does have a solid writing style and intriguing story ideas. I would read more from them.
Overall, I enjoyed this book so much more than the first book and thought the storyline was much more fleshed out fluid here.
Being twins, Devlin and Daniel have spent their whole lives being mischievous but when Devlin injures his leg, he is forced to stay in Harpers Grove. His brother offers to go back to London and assume his identity to handle some pressing affairs, among them, a certain female who has set her sights on him.
This book can be read as a standalone however it made more sense to have read the first one.
What didn't really work for me was the whole premise of the twins switching places. They are just so far different it just seemed like a weak excuse of why they needed to trade places. But as this is the story, I will play along. I liked Daniel playing Devlin and it could have been a great fish out of water storyline however he settled too much into being his brother. Yes, we hear that he is uncomfortable but not that uncomfortable and it just didn't really fit his vicar personality to 'play' a rake without telling us of some humorous bits he needed to overcome.
Olivia in my opinion was very spoiled and sheltered and I didn't much care for her character and thusly I never felt the romantic connection between the two. We see Daniel/Dev have inner thoughts about liking her but I never got that from her.
There was also a lot of back and forth over being friends and her chasing him which went on far too long. Then when he relents and continues to play the farce, the story just lost all credibility to me.
Do I recommend this- Yes. I think readers should read the first book in the series to begin so as they get a better view of the twins but the author does explain quite a bit of backstory in the second chapter, almost verbatim out of the first book, so it isn't totally necessary.
The author is a strong writer and I do enjoy her stories but they do go on a bit long-winded sometimes.
A solid 4 stars as it is a good storyline, good writing and entertaining.
'Oh what a tangled web we weave/When first we practice to deceive' - lies upon more lies leads to complications and heartache for victim and perpetrator. Eventually the Gordian knot is untangled and everyone is happy. I would guess however that this book should NOT be read as a standalone but read after Devlin’s story in The Devil’s Own.
I hope that by the time of publication the problems with the uncorrected proof I received have been ironed out. In Chapter 1 it is undeniably the vicar Daniel’s idea that they take each other’s places but ever after Devlin is the one blamed as having ‘persuaded’ the saintly twin. On looking at the blurb of Book 1, which I haven’t read, that too says Devlin was the one doing the persuading. Did I read a copy of the book where the author was playing with ideas for the two intertwined stories and an older draft version of Chapter 1 got inexplicably left in the final proof? There were so many things (mainly at the beginning and end of the story) that were either glossed over or unexplained. [What happened to Annie; why was Lord Lovelace so desperate to marry Olivia; what was in the 2nd and 3rd letters that was more shocking than the 1st?]
As regards the characters whilst Olivia was undeniably clever, she was also spoiled and manipulative - which didn’t always make for easy reading. Whilst Daniel in order to keep Devlin within the family, and to protect his own reputation, felt he had no option but to impersonate his twin; his ease at lying didn’t make this reader feel too sympathetic to him either.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
After his twin brother pulls a foolish prank, Reverend Daniel Wayward's life is now decidedly complicated. With his family, his parish, and even his reputation at risk, there's only one way to avoid utter ruin—by swapping places with his rakish, wicked twin. And the second Daniel steps foot into his brother's worldly and sinful life in London, he's completely caught by temptation of the most enticing, green-eyed kind.
Miss Olivia St. Peters knows the son of the duke is a dangerous fellow, but something in those hooded, hungry blue eyes makes her blood sing with pleasure. She's determined to have this Wayward noble, no matter what Society—or even her father—says about the match. And if that means playing with fire, she'll gladly burn..
The more Daniel resists the oh-so-inviting charms of Olivia, the more determined she is to have him. Now he's caught between his vows of faith and the lure of sweet temptation. And the only thing standing between his heart and his immortal soul is one unforgivable deception...
Twins being mistaken for each other, a truly beautiful romantic tangle.
This book by Liana LeFey is truly a work of art.
Ooooo such an amazing, easy, and fantastic story to read. The pace of the story was perfect for my liking and the concept was incredible. Do you like stories on hidden identities?? Well, I do and so I devoured the book. The writing is fabulous and the story is explained graciously well.
The story is of Olivia, a strong-headed girl trying to woo Devlin, who is a man of questionable character. Where Olivia is a respected citizen of the London Society, Devlin is a notorious kind of man. A Union between the two is just not possible but irrespective of the practicality Olivia is determined to try.
The twist in the story is that Devlin has a twin brother, Daniel and in a tragic but laughable situation, they swap places and lives they were living. Daniel is the vicar in real life and comes to London as Devlin and from there a roller coaster ride starts between Daniel and Olivia. I enjoyed every bit of the story, close to the end story becomes very emotional and I surely prayed that things go on a better track.
Loved the ending and seriously I was late for the party, there’s already a book on Devlin’s story “The Devil’s Own” about what he does while being Daniel. In the entire book, I kept thinking that what’s happening to him, and at the last, I got to know that the story is already released. I’ll be reading it soon to know how the devil got his ending.
When a foolish prank by his devil-may-care twin brother forces vicar Daniel into a sticky situation, the only solution to maintain the family's reputation is for the brothers to temporarily switch places. This plunges Daniel into the unfamiliar world of good (and not-so-good) society in London, and right in the path of Olivia, who must be managed delicately as she is not only infatuated with his brother, but also happens to be the daughter of his wealthy and powerful business partner. Soon, however, Daniel realizes there's much more to Olivia than he imagined--much more than he can ignore!
Both Daniel and Olivia were really enjoyable characters. They're both decent, clever people who are easy to root for. I enjoyed their conversations and humor. I also really liked the author's treatment of Daniel's faith--he was a sincere believer who tried to exemplify at least as much as he preached and wasn't prone to harsh judgment of others. His agony at the increasingly complicated situation he found himself in was palpable and the path to resolution felt realistic and satisfying.
Pick this up for a smart, well-told story with likable characters and lots of heart!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
Reverend Daniel Wayward heads to London to pose as his gamester rake brother Devin. In the first book in this series, Devin broke his leg and drunkenly gives a sermon posing as Daniel forcing them to switch places until he's healed.
Both twins have a woman that thinks they are in love with them and have offered to turn them off, instead falling for them. Olivia St. Peters is the daughter of Devin's business partner and is convinced Devin is attracted to her. She pursues him and Daniel tries to avoid her, falling instead and dealing with the guilt and shame he feels over his own issues with sex.
I did not love the last 1/3 of this book. After shamefully falling in love and then turning away Olivia, it takes way too long and way too much effort for them to come back together. Almost to the point that their original attraction seems to have completely disappeared. I really picked up this series for the twin switch, I didn't really love the execution of either novel. There was so much shame in both books that frankly it invoked unpleasant feelings when reading both. It was oozing with catholic guilt.
Though I think this author has promise, her storytelling leaves a lot to be desired.
After reading the book before this one with Devlin’s story, I really wanted to find out what his twin, Daniel (the vicar) had been up to during that period of time. I’m glad I read Devlin’s book first as I think I would’ve been a little confused with this story had I not.
I would say as characters I found Daniel and Olivia to be really interesting, and he was definitely my favorite twin! I loved Olivia’s business savvy mind (not typical for that time) and how Daniel struggled with his feelings of being both a vicar and a man. While this story moved fast and kept me interested, I struggled with a few major things that seemed to have been forgotten (why was Lovelace trying to court Olivia and what happened with him, and what happened with Anne and her child and how did thar never came up in discussion between Daniel and Olivia). Also, after reading the first book I expected a little more steam, but this one had almost none except for one small part. I would’ve loved to even have them just kiss some more to show some intimacy.
I loved when the actual emotional romance happened in the last few pages, and if there would’ve been more of that i definitely would’ve enjoyed this book a lot more!
This is my first time reading something by this author and I found it to be a very entertaining read. It involves a twin swap, which of course leads to a case of mistaken identity, making for a fun story. It is the second book in the Wicked Waywards series, and after reading this, my interest is now peaked in going back and reading the first book. The story was well crafted and kept my interest throughout. Daniel and Devlin are twins. Daniel is the mild mannered, pious brother respected by all, maintaining a good reputation. Devlin is the rogue of the family and when one of Devlin's pranks goes wrong, Daniel goes to London in his place to help restore the family's good name. When he encounters Olivia, he is completely caught off guard by her and he can't help but be tempted by her beauty. Olivia is determined to win him over, thinking he is Devlin, and Daniel has a difficult time resisting her. But will she still want him when the truth comes out about the swap?
This was an enjoyable and unique story with some twists that definitely kept me reading. This was a fun story and I am glad to have had the opportunity to read it. I would love to try more books by this author.
I received a free copy for review from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion.
I also have a copy of the first book of the series and read that prior to get the full story from both points of view from the twins.
I cannot say that I either loved or hated this book/series. The idea of the good twin/bad twin, and swapping places doesn't feel very fresh to me, and I did not feel a connection with either Devlin or Daniel falling in love with the romantic nemesis of their twin.
Maybe also both the heroines did not strike a tone with me, especially being so persistent in the face of rejection by the twins initially. Olivia struck me as being rather rapacious, and I could see where Devlin had that idea that she was a spoiled princess. I don't like that she hides her intelligence.
But I think the biggest problem I had was that both twins lived such extensive lies to these two women for so long, but then did redeem themselves so relatively quickly and gain the love and trust of them and their families. Seems a bit too far fetched and neat for me. Sweetly told (maybe a bit too sweetly at times), but beyond belief.
Three out of five stars.
Reverend Daniel Wayward is furious with his twin brother.  Devlin's mischief has put him in an impossible situation.  Having to take his brother's place as a Rake and Gambling den owner in London is going to test his soul more than anything before.
Our hero is about to have so many temptations put into his path.  How can he play his part and protect everyone?
Miss Olivia St.Peters is the fiercely independent daughter of a pirate.  Her father has made peace with the Crown, and his fortune gives them both respectability. She wants a man that can see beyond her father's money to the real person she is.
Our heroine is intelligent and used to getting anything she wants.
This is a fabulous historical romance full of fun and very strong characters.  Obviously there is the other twin's story . (The first book in the series.) You don't need to have read that in order to enjoy this one, but it will make you want to read it.
I actually liked this brother even more than his twin,  but maybe that's because I initially felt sorry for him.
Really Great Fun.
✨ARC Review✨
Reverend Daniel decides to escape life ruin, he must switch places with his twin whom is quite the wicked character. In his new “role”, he immediately grasps the attention of Miss Olivia. Daniel tries to turn down her advancements, but she is only interested in turning up the heat! He finds himself caught between vows of faith and the temptation of her.
What I Loved:
-there really isn’t a whole lot I can touch on that I loved, because this one missed the mark for me. I didn’t care for the characters, which ultimately made the story less enjoyable. I likely would have DNF’d but I was already far invested hoping for something more, and decided to just finish. The steam in this also affected my rating, I was hoping for so much more than what we got, alas, another reason I held out, yet felt unsatisfied.
I have started to enjoy more historical romances as of recent, but sadly, this one just didn’t fit the bill for me.
✨Rating✨
⭐️⭐️/5
Steam Factor: 🔥/5
Again like the first book, this was a slow burn. They don't even kiss until almost 70%.
I liked these characters and getting to see what Daniel was up to in London but had a hard time connecting.
This book tells Daniel's story and we get to learn what he was doing in London.
But before stepping into his brother's life he's briefed by Devlin about the things going on in his life and Dev warns him about Ms. Oilvia St. Peters. Daniel vows to dissuade the lady from pursuing him further.
When Daniel arrives in London the first thing he does is begin to dismantle some of Dev's wicked ways. Sending away the explicit art, severing communicate with various ladies and generally staying in.
When he finally meets Miss Olivia, he tries to stay on task. But the more he tries to resist her, the more determined she is to have him.
Thanks to Entangled, the author, and NetGalley for this ARC to review.
