Abandoned on a remote mountain road, the storm closing in isn’t the only deadly threat she will face.
A New Year’s Eve party is the perfect time to reconnect with old friends and make resolutions none of you will keep. Still, Audrey Drummond sees it as a good way to pass the time now that she’s back in Sweet Home, Oregon. She hitches a ride with her high school ex, but their ride down memory lane takes a perilous turn, and Audrey finds herself abandoned, cold and alone on a mountain road—miles away from the party.
From that moment on, her situation only gets worse.
When Audrey vanishes in a winter storm, Officer Lacey James knows that left to the elements, she won’t survive long. But when the initial search yields no viable clues, the missing persons case takes a darker turn.
Time is running out, and the killer storm isn’t the only immediate threat Lacey will face in the desperate quest to save her.

Save Her by Chris Patchell could have started out: It was a cold, wintry day and she found herself alone, stranded in a snowstorm…
Pacing, pacing, pacing…Chris Patchell is a master at keeping a high level of suspense going throughout the book. I know from her past books she will not fail to get my emotions roiling.
We’re back in Sweet Home, Oregon, with Lacey, who is struggling to adjust having Caleb home from Fort Hood on a permanent basis, though the kids are loving it. It sounds to me like she now has three kids to take care of and I’m uncertain if she hasn’t outgrown Caleb.
Being a cop in her home town isn’t easy for her either…A small town where she knows everyone. She’s quick with her words, witty and sharp, and I find myself laughing out loud, at times.
There is more than one person in the small town of Sweet Home, Oregon, that needs to grow up.
OMG…the rat bastard! I want to reach into my Kindle and beat him to a pulp! I am shocked, outraged and very pissed off!
Save Her may be a bit on the predictable side, but Chris Patchell has a way of creating tension, suspense, and a sense of urgency that has me racing through the pages to find out if or who will SAVE HER! I know Lacey is going to run into danger, but that’s okay. The pacing keeps me going. Gotta know…What’s…Next.
Lacey is too juicy a character for her story to end her. Next up: Tell Her, Book III in this stand alone series, and I can hardly wait to get my hands on it.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Save Her by Chris Patchell.
When on Christmas Eve Audrey gets a ride from her high school ex Jake things get worse before they reach the cabin where the party is. He lets her get out of the truck on the mountain road in the middle of a snow storm and goes back to the party alone, leaving Audrey alone and cold. Officer Lacey James has a fight with her husband on that same party and is on the point of leaving when she sees Jake coming back without Audrey. She goes searching Audrey but because of the icy snow it isn't that easy. Where did Jake left Audrey and where is she now? The plot is very well built and until the end it leaves you questioning if Audrey will survive and if Lacey will be able to find her. The characters are well written and the feelings come in strong, feelings of disappointment, anger and fear. As a reader you can also feel the cold of the snow and icy wind described in the story. Save her is a fantastic thriller written by Chris Patchell. I received a ARC copy of Save her and I leave a honest and voluntary review.
Like the first [audio]book, I have to praise the cover of this one. It’s absolutely stunning and really draws you in. Chris Patchell does an excellent job at giving us a story with a high level of suspense from start to finish. I love police officer Lacey James. She’s a smart, strong, and determined female lead. Audrey Drummond is such a great character. Very relatable and likeable. It was easy to feel connected to her and follow her tortious journey. I’d like to see her ex-boyfriend in the next book as one of the victims after what he did to her. Just saying. The one thing I don’t like about the story is Lacey and Caleb’s relationship. They need to make a decision. $h!t or get off the pot. But that’s just a personal opinion and doesn’t distract from the story. I did enjoy the strong feelings and tension it gave to the story. This was another unputdownable listen from Chris Patchell!
Cassandra Medcalf was perfectly cast for this role. Her timing, pitch, pace, and tones were spot on. She really brought this story to life. her characterizations were excellent. Between the first audiobook and this one, Cassandra has definitely developed a strong connection to the characters and portrays each with their own uniqueness. She projected every character’s emotions flawlessly. I highly recommend the audiobook version of this book. Thank you to Fireside Audio for gifting me this thrilling audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I'm enjoying Patchell's Lacey James series and will be moving onto #3. Her stories are short and fast paced, with just the right amount of suspense and character development.
The main character Lacey James is a police officer for Sweet Home, Oregon. She and her husband are at a New Year's Eve party. Audrey is visiting her hometown of Sweet Home, Oregon, and heading to meet friends at the same New Years’ Eve party. That was the plan at least.
New Years Eve in a snowstorm on a mountain in Oregon is the setting. This is a fast paced suspenseful story. Audrey never makes it to the party. Where is Audrey? A lot of action and plot twist brings these three characters together
Save Her is a great book. I did not want to put this book down. A four hour quick and easy read. I would like to thank the author for giving me an advanced copy of Save Her. It's the first Chris Patchel book I've ever read. I love this book and will be reading many more of her books. I'll be reading Find Her Book 1 of the Lacey James mysteries next. This is my honest review of Save Her.
Lacey is one tough cop but her home life is in turmoil. Her friend is missing in the snow and there's blood everywhere. Can she save her friend and her marriage? A fantastic story and well worth the read.
I received this ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) book and I am posting my honest opinion and review.
Awesome; Engrossing and nail biting. Another amazing engrossing story by Chris in the Lacey James mystery thriller series being book 2 and what a fantastic story it is! The story centers Lacey James a police officer in a town called “Sweet Home” in Oregon, her husband Noah who are going through difficult times with their marriage and Audrey.
It all starts at a New Eve’s party; with Audrey being dumped by her x- colleague boyfriend Jake who agrees to pick her up and take her to a New Year’s Party but he soon turns nasty and throws Audrey is left abandoned miles out and away from the party on the Cascades highway high up in the Evergreen foothills. In desperation with no mobile signal and a full blizzard and freezing conditions Audrey reluctantly accepts a lift from a stranger Garth Reznick but unbeknown she has made a massive life threatening mistake as Garth is not a good person and only just released from prison and her life is soon in jeopardy. On disappearing the search is on with no clues at all to sat where Audrey was and Lacey, Noah and Audrey’s lives are all in risk with a killer storm and out in the elements time is of essence to survive themselves and save to Audrey. “I highly recommend this book it’s a real page turner!”
Have you every read a book that caused your heart to exhilarate and the hair on the back of your neck to stand up? Then this book will do that. It was a page turner and I read it in one day. I could not put this book down, it was enthralling and it kept my interest till the end. I loved it when Lacey put Maureen in her place and then when Lacey and Caleb are together looking for a missing woman. Their relationship needed help and as a military wife I could relate to what was happening. I would recommend this book to all it was a really good read. I received an arc and the views and opinions are my own. I will definitely be buying the next book. This was a new author to me and I really enjoyed the writing style and the plot line.
A New Year’s Eve out with husband Caleb sets the scene for this story, set in a mesh of modern day marital discord (that looks solvable), age old jealousy, predatory behaviour leading to bloodshed and exceptionally bad weather. Lacey James is a police officer in her hometown of Sweet Home and she did not envision such a night when it was suggested they spend the night out.
Another of their school friends is dumped on the road by a jealous school day boyfriend, in the midst of a worsening storm. This leads to that friend, Audrey Drummond, being picked up on the road by a local with a criminal record and violence ensures. Well written with characters fleshed out well and a believable story line that makes for an interesting and entertaining read.
This honest review comes as a result of being provided a free advance copy of this book by the author.
I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest review.
Chris Patchell has penned a solid nail-biter of a tale about a group of friends who've known each other for most of their lives, but suddenly find one of their group in danger and missing in a dangerous blizzard. Her all too realistic depiction of the challenges facing military families and veterans due to their job-related separations hit home for my family. The story is well-crafted and hard to put down.
This 3.5-hour book really packs a punch with a fully realized plot and emotionally gripping writing. This is the second book in the Lacey James series, but it is fine to read it first. Lacey James is an intelligent, resourceful, stubborn cop in a small town in Oregon. She has two kids, and her husband just left the army to live with them full-time. Lacey is having very realistic marriage problems, which might give emotional turmoil to some listeners. A woman named Audrey was supposed to arrive at the New Year’s Eve party Lacey was attending, but she goes missing, and Lacey immediately starts the search. Trigger Warning Note: this book contains brief but strong violence, a few minutes of goreyness, and a danger of hypothermia. The story is told in third person past tense perspective of Lacey and Audrey.
I loved the character development of Lacey and her husband. I also was extremely impressed at the thrilling writing. The victim Audrey’s experiences and Lacey’s hunt to find Audrey alive were both tautly written. The author is also gifted at sensory descriptions of the settings, and I could completely visualize the snowy night and all of the surroundings. I highly recommend this audiobook to thriller fans and to police procedural fans, and I am definitely going to listen to the rest of the series.
The single narrator, Cassandra Metcalf, gave an expert performance. She is remarkably gifted at men’s and women’s voices, pacing, dialogue, and emoting. I found her vocal tone to be pleasing to my ear. The sample sounds rather sarcastic, but that was because of the character, who became less sarcastic fairly soon after that. The narrator enriched the reading experience and quickly allowed me get fully absorbed in the audiobook.
I requested and received a free audiobook code from the #Flock group, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #Flock, #AudiobookObsession
This book is 146 pages and none of it is wasted. Lacey is at a New Year's Eve party when an old friend is supposed to join. Due to douchey-ness, Audrey is stranded in the street during a storm. When she hitches a ride with a stranger, obviously things turn south. In a race against time, Lacey is determined to find her. I think what I liked most about this book was Lacey and Caleb working together on this case. They've been struggling since he arrived home but this is definitely what they needed. The way Chris Patchell blends Lacey's personal life with the story was so well done. She didn't have a lot of pages to really dive into much but it delivered exactly in the way it should have.
I really like Lacey. While this book wasn't long again, I feel like it was enough to gauge her character. This is definitely a series worth continuing and not just because the cases are interesting. Lacey's personal life is written in a way that makes me care about it as well. I'm rooting for her and Caleb. I'm rooting for her career. I'm rooting for Lacey.
Overall, Save Her by Chris Patchell was another great entry for Lacey James. I really liked the urgency of this book and with not a lot of pages - enough was said. The story takes off and since it isn't dragged out, that race against time really shines. Along with trying to find Audrey, Lacey also is dealing with Caleb and adjusting to him being home. Everything blended together very well and if you enjoyed the first book, you'll definitely enjoy this one.
AUDIO REVIEW Cassandra Medcalf does such a good job narrating this book. I really liked listening to this on audio and the voice she gave Lacey. I think listening to this on audio also helped drive the rush of this case. I would absolutely recommend this book on this format.
Save Her is a fast read with a fast pace. It's an edge-of-your-seat, intense thriller, and Chris Patchell doesn't do much in the way of dawdling even at the beginning. This book is easily read in a couple of hours, and it's a good thing because once it takes off, there's no way I was putting it down. Between Lacey's hunt for Audrey in treacherous conditions and the turmoil between her and Caleb, her husband, she doesn't have much time to do anything except push forward and react to everything going on around her. Fortunately, she's as smart as she is tough. She's maybe a bit too stubborn for her own good, but that determination and drive serve her well in this situation. So, we have the nail-biting search for Audrey - and the story does shift over to her enough that we have a pretty good grasp of her situation. Then we have the relationship between Lacey and Caleb, who are just a few wrong words spoken in anger away from splitting up. I read in the Afterword that the author didn't know until the "ninth hour" how things would end up between Lacey and Caleb, and I'll admit that I wasn't really sure if I wanted them to stay together or not until... Well, I'll leave that for you to uncover for yourself. If you're looking for a good thriller to while away an afternoon or evening, Save Her will do the trick. It is book 2 in what I understand is to be a 3 book series. Now, you don't technically have to have read the first book to follow this one, but these are some terrific characters and you'll want their whole story from the beginning. The only problem I have is waiting for the next book and worrying that 3 books won't be enough of Lacey and company.
Caleb, police officer Lacey James's husband has moved back to Pregon as their long distance relationship wasn't working. Nor was their no distance one. Lacey had had to function as a one parent family for so long, it seemed natural to be in control. Caleb, felt like there was no place for him in the current set up. Whilst he had been in Texas, Lacey's sister Amber had provided childcare and support, now all that had changed was Caleb was babysitter. A school friends reunion was being held and iit was decided they would have a night out together. Caleb settled right in, Lacey felt like the grown up overseeing the kiddies at play. Indoor football ruined her blouse, Caleb's intent concentration on the poker game he was losing, did little to help her mood. She decided to go home, Caleb wasn't impressed and they were having words when the local drunk Jake arrived alone - he was supposed to give Audrey Drummond a lift. After some proofing, he admitted they had rowed and he had thrown her out of the truck a few miles back, during blizzard conditions, well below freezing, to walk the rest of the way. After berating him, Lacey takes it uon herself to go and find Audrey before she freezes to death. And so the main story begins, one death and a couple of close calls, and many home truths, will Caleb and Lacey still be a couple or their relationship frozen like the weather? Not a bad story, but rather stretched in places could have been 20% shorter.
Save Her The Lacey James Series By: Chris Patchell Narrated by: Cassandra Medcalf
The second book in the Lacey James series, Chris Patchell explodes immediately with suspense and drama! While these books are short, they are chock full of thrilling excitement and just enough romance to peak my interest and keep it engaged. Lacey and Caleb are back together, at least they appear to be. Life just isn't the same as it was, and it's like going through the motions. Lacey is called out on search for a friend of hers, Audrey, who disappears after leaving a New Year's Eve Party. Blizzard conditions and no idea where she has ended up has Caleb coming to her side using his search and rescue skills. What has happened to Audrey? Will these two find her in time? And will they figure their own problems out? Mysteries are so exciting, and this one had me from the start. I enjoy Patchell's writing as we venture back and forth from Audrey to Lacey and Caleb, following both stories until the converge. This is another thrilling installment and I can't wait to see what Patchell has in store for us next!
Cassandra Medcalf falls in to character once again as Lacey! I love her voices and the way she portrays each character. Different voices make the story come alive and the suspense build. She is perfect for this series I am really enjoying getting to know her better!
Strong points: -The mechanics of the writing – – grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary – – I thought all those were perfectly fine. -Dialogue – – my experience is that dialogue is a weak point for lots of writers; their dialogue sounds forced/awkward/unrealistic, and I didn’t find that to be the case here. -I thought Patchell did a good job presenting the points of view and frustrations of both Lacey and Caleb regarding the marriage, and our heroine Lacey was not presented as faultless.
Weaknesses: -There was a lot of predictability. I would’ve bet money at the beginning that all three of the good guys would come out relatively unscathed, and… -This book was so like the first one, in that Lacey set out to rescue someone, Lacey was in danger, then she was an even more danger, then she was in really significant extreme danger, and then she was in really significant extreme life-threatening can-she-ever-get out-of-this-danger. Put-leez. -I bought this audiobook number 3 as part of a three-pack of the first three books, and if Lacey and Caleb are in the same place in their marriage at the end of book 3 that they have been in books 1 and 2, I will not be reading past book 3.
I was delighted to see Save Her land into my Audible account. Chris Patchell did a great job at keeping me captivated. I really enjoyed the idea of this ex couple heading to a party together when they get in an argument and he drops her off in the middle of the night, in a winter storm, deep in the woods without a soul around, and still miles from their destination. You’d think no one in their right mind would just drop off a single woman in the middle of the night in the woods for her to fend for herself. What happens with Audrey when Jake speeds off upset and angry with everything? Lacey is on the case and she’s determined to find Audrey.
I really enjoyed Chris Patchell’s story and writing. Save Her was a bit on the shorter side but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in action and suspense. I happened to enjoy this book more than the first in the series. Lacey is enjoying some downtime in the mountains with her husband. They are taking some time and working on their relationship. The narrator for Save Her, Cassandra Medcalf, did a fabulous job. She’s an excellent narrator and really brings Lacey to life.
This might have been a shorter story, but it certainly was thrilling and very engaging. I found myself hooked on every moment. I already knew that I liked the main character from the first book in the series, but I found myself continuing with that feeling in this second book. I liked this new story and how it was a whole new case to deal with and yet there were also tie-ins from the previous story as well in regard to the main character Lacey’s personal life. I, in particular, like the way things with her personal life were handled overall. Without wanting to give too much away, I was a little worried how things might end in that regard, but I was pleasantly surprised with the way the author chose to handle things, and I am even more excited to continue, knowing that the characters are choosing to fight for what is important to them. I also really enjoyed the narration for this one. The performer was a good fit for the character, and I would enjoy hearing her continue the series. FiresideAudioReviewTeam
Although Lacey James is a police officer in her hometown, this book was more about what happened at a New Year's Eve party and about her relationship with her husband.
Lacey puts herself in danger by trying to find a missing woman (a former classmate from high school days) during a raging snowstorm.
Not really a police procedural since there are many mistakes made. I grew up in snow country; why would Lacey (even in her personal vehicle), not carry extra blankets, a flashlight, sand bags, a first aid kit. Instead she stomps on her brakes on ice (no one I know would do that) thereby causing an accident and totalling her personal vehicle and needs to be rescued by a man. Never thinks to use her cellphone as a flashlight (instead wandering around in darkness in a snowstorm), doesn't take crime scene photos with her cell phone; doesn't think to cover a broken window with the available tarp, or start a fire to provide some heat.
However, all ends well by the end of the book. Of course.
Lacey and Caleb are adjusting to living together after he turns down a promotion and returns from Fort Hood (now Cavozos), Texas (now Cavosos) on a permanent basis. They haven’t lived together for a long time. Caleb needs more than just being the other parent. Currently, he is just doing what needs to be done to run the household based on Lacey’s directions. Both are having issues with this arrangement.
It’s New Year’s Eve and Audrey Drummond never makes it to the party. Jacob Wahlberg dumped her on the side of the road a few miles before reaching the site. Lacey becomes aware of this and goes looking for her before Audrey freezes to death. When Lacey can’t locate Audrey, she calls Caleb.
The night gets worse with Lacey and Audrey both injured. I liked the twists and turns the story took. Not sure if Caleb and Lacey will work things out but they do love one another.
Looking forward to book 3. I listened to this book and the narrator did a very good job. I would listen to this narrator again.
Audrey is on her way up the mountain with her high school ex Jake to a New Years Eve party with a group of friends when he gets mad and shoves her out of the truck. When Jake shows up without her, Lacey starts down the mountain to find her. It starts snowing harder making visibility near zero. In the author's hand the weather becomes a character, painted explicitly and realistically. I could feel the cold and the blowing snow, feel the desolation and sense of isolation. This missing person case turns much more serious and deadly not just for Audrey but for Lacey and Caleb. This is a quick read that shows us more of Lacey and Caleb's background. Will their relationship survive this New Year's Eve? Will they? The characters are quite believable in this series and the plot was a good one. The suspense built with the storm. The snow rescue kept me on the edge of my seat and had me reading late into the night. Thanks to the author for a copy of this book. I enjoyed it.
Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest. Narrated exceptionally by Cass Medcalf, helms the poignantly explosive sequel to Find Her. It was suppose to be a fun party, high school friends connecting once more; but for Audrey the moment she's abandoned among the snowy woods along way to the party; a seemingly kind strange desires to help. From that moment and onward, Audrey finds herself in a ever sinking desperation as she escapes a strangers sick desires to be plunged into the silent, frozen world, with every step a struggle and she wants to just give up but a fiery determination takes over to keep her fighting. A harrowing chase ensue as officer Lacey James and her husband Caleb race to find her before nature or a madman find Audrey first all the while confronting their crumbling marriage. Another gritty, captivating yarn by the author, highly recommended.
I want to be Lacey James friend! I want to know what is on her husbands phone, I want to like her husband. I hope some of the things are addressed in book 3 regarding their relationship. There appears to be a beacon of hope, on not giving up and working in their relationship. I get that is not the premise of the books, but they are part of Lacey, how she is the person she is, the cop that she is. There is also the tenacity of Audrey, back in her hometown, being dumped alongside the road with a blizzard coming in and little to no cell service. I kept yelling no, no don't get in. Creepy. Well done. I know an author is worth reading when I want to know the good guys, and scream at the book. Thank you for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Save her is the 2nd in a 3 book series and the 1st book started brilliantly but this 2nd one not quite got the oomph as the 1st. New Year's Eve party and Lacey James is having problems with her marriage as her husband was usually away in the forces but now home for good and it's not going quite so well, and there is an impending snowstorm and freezing temperatures, so not good for travelling. An ex-boyfriend offered to go and pick Audrey up and then a row erupted, and I could guess what was going to happen and did not get it wrong, so I was a little disappointed in this saga. I really hope the 3rd is going to be a blockbuster as the 1st. I did receive an advance readers copy and it is purely my honest review.
This second book in the Lacey James series is action packed. Chris Patchell has once again created a storyline that hooks you and doesn’t let you go until the final page. Even at the end, you’re already wondering what will happen next in this series. There is a continuing underlying story arc regarding Lacey and Caleb’s marriage, but even so, each of the books can easily be read as a standalone. These books are well written, suspenseful and so descriptive that you can imagine the settings and feel the emotions of the characters. Character development is well done and realistic. This is a quick read that you may want to start when you have a block of time to devote to reading because once you start, you’ll want to keep reading until you finish the book.
Book 2 was great! I actually think it may be better than the first book. But I was kind of hard to tell as it's been a few months since I read the first one and while I remember it, I think this one is definitely going to be more memorable. It was a great little story. I got it done in pretty much a day. But I do listen at a faster speed than some. I think the narrator did a fantastic job with this one. I really got a sense of the different characters just by listening to their voices. Overall, I'm very pleased with this series. I also think that this could have been read as a standalone book. Reading it in order def helps but it not necessary to enjoy the story. I can't wait to start number 3! #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam
This is the second outing for Lacey James and it was an enjoyable read. When Lacey and her husband go to a New Year's eve party all she wanted to do was spend time with her husband, not go to an old school reunion party, where everyone is acting like they are still in high school! When Lacey decides to leave the party early things take a turn for the worst as especially when I young woman has been abandoned on the side of the road. As Lacey looks for Audrey she can't find a single trace of her but what happens next is terrifying. I want to thank Chris for the opportunity of reading this Advanced Reader Copy for my honest review.
