When confronting the challenge of disciplining their children, moms and dads often default to the ways their own parents disciplined them, sometimes with harmful results. In High Five Discipline, mom and practicing pediatrician Dr. Candice Jones shows parents a better way. Dr. Jones coaches parents to understand their child's developmental stages and their own motivations to create a family discipline plan that manages misbehavior and encourages good behavior. Her advice is packed with developmentally appropriate strategies to tame tantrums, stop sibling squabbles, and reward better behavior to create a calmer, more harmonious home.
Highly Recommend! Reading this as a pediatrician, there wasn't much groundbreaking insight for me, but this is a truly a phenomenal intro to positive parenting. Anyone who reads this will have at least few takeaways that will help them to deal with the various challenges of parenting. I love the sections on addressing parents' own well-being as well as the sections that talk about the varying needs and abilities for different stages/ages of childhood.
I was familiar with a lot of the concepts in this book having been a recipient of 10+ years therapy for childhood trauma, but I consider this a must read for all new parents. It was unfortunate circumstance that lead me to already being familiar with the concepts, but for those who had a smoother time and may not have considered certain ideas around discipline, it’s brilliant. A lot of people are unaware of what constitutes adverse childhood experiences and so it’s a necessity to be informed.
I think the book could’ve gone without the speckles of American patriotism in order for it to be more appealing to a broader audience and more neutral.
Excellent overview of practical strategies and mindsets for healthy parental discipline. Jones provides relevant and timely examples as well as diverse perspectives. The charts and graphics aided in understanding the content. While not entirely innovative, Jones offers a concise and logical approach that emphasizes empathy. While I spend most of my day helping educators to manage student behaviors, I find myself occasionally struggling to implement what I preach in my own home with my own children. Jones' book helped to create a better pathway forward for me.
High Five Discipline is an "Excellent Read" for parents, grandparents, those who wish to become parents and all facilities that engage children. The suggested ideas for discipline (when needed) in this book, seems to make the process easier & more productive! I am the grandmother of a preteen grandson.
