Everyone has secrets, but mine could get me killed.
I’m Em, and my deathday was yesterday.
At least, that’s what the Government thinks.
The digits on my wrist may not have killed me, but they’ve put a target on my back.
Now, a fugitive in my own city, I need to figure out how I lived past my deathday. And why I was the only one…
It’s not just about finding answers. It’s about survival.
One thing is certain: I’m out of my depth. Even my hacking skills might not be enough to get me out of this one…
Full of action, intrigue, and a heroine who doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, The Hacker is the addictive companion novella to The Deathday Chronicles, the young adult dystopian series that’s perfect for fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent and Legend.
Enchanting magic, daring quests, found families & a splash of romance.
Kasia Lasinska writes series of fast-paced young adult fantasy and dystopian novels filled with daring quests, action, adventure, magic hidden in unexpected places and a splash of romance that will keep you reading late into the night.

Forget about today's society. You are now in a totalitarian regime led by a Military figure who decides when your time to dye has arrived. Your age does not factor in, nor your job or your usefulness to society. Your Death Day is even tattooed on your wrist. Em is a 16 years old young woman loved by her mother and younger brother. She is celebrating her sixteenth birthday today, on the same day that she is slated to dye. However, in her case, she does not even if her final resting clothes have been laid out for her and her coffin has been installed in the hall. Yeah, pretty gruesome. Her Dad was taken away when she was much younger and she is terrified but not for herself. What worries her is the effect that this will have on her mother and younger brother. Now, she must disappear without a trace, at her mother's urging, or she will be murdered by the "Safety Patrol". This is a prequel to a series that this author has created with this Futuristic Society in the forefront. The subject is well researched and very well written with emphasis being put on Fear, Elation, New technology, Friendship, Dictatorial measures imposed and the search for a solution to these and future problems that EM may be faced with. I recommend this book and look forward to reading the sequel. 5 Stars rating is applied.
First off, I do not recommend reading this if have not read The Countdown
Secondly, I recommend reading this right after The Countdown. I needed a refresher before starting this as I read The Countdown awhile back.
Thirdly, I am hopeful this book is a segue to a full length story. Being The Countdown was 0 and this is .5 I assume another book is coming. I'm still intrigued to read it, but this little book/story on its own didn't do much for me. Honestly more 3 stars than 4 but if it's setting me up for Em to be in the main book as I hope then it's worth the 4th star. Don't let me down! 😉
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I truly enjoyed reading this book. It is set for future years where the world has changed because of radioactive left over from war. The store line and characters keep you wanting more. Definitely a page Turner that sometimes keeps you on the edge of your seat hoping for a positive outcome of the stressful situation. Happy reading everyone and I definitely plan on reading more of Kasia s books.
I listened to this before The Countdown, and there are some unexplained things but it's pretty easy to fill in the blanks if you're not new to futuristic dystopia. Em's escape after her deathday was written well, and if the series ever happens I'll definitely read it, but so far there's still only the two prequels.
