From before the dawn of time we have feared them - something long faded into myth and legend – creatures so terrifying our race memory retains the dread they brought with them in the darkness of the night.
Kimberly Eastman. A woman so traumatized by a horrific past she has become a recluse. Mark Walker. A man terrified by his own supernatural present. Two strangers that must combine their talents to solve a mystery that spans centuries.
Their international pursuit of an unimaginable truth will lead them on a dangerous quest - from Los Angeles - to the stormy windswept wilds of northern Britain – then deep into the dark underbelly of Berlin – while relentlessly pursued by an ancient nightmare that cannot possibly exist.
As the gruesome body count mounts and old friends are reunited, Eastman and Walker discover that no one is who they appear to be – and the price for the forbidden knowledge they seek could mean their very lives.
At its heart, a great werewolf story. But one that feels stuffed into the author’s Cryptid umbrella rather than fitting organically into the series. I struggled to understand why none of the intelligent protagonists never once described or clued into the fact that the creatures “hunting” them were werewolves, having laid eyes in their forms throughout the novel. Finally, I accepted that perhaps we were in a world where the werewolf myth never spread, an odd parallel universe. Until one of them finally realizes in the last few chapters that these creatures are behind the werewolf myths of the world. What?! The strange convoluted plot the creatures follow also felt a bit ridiculous. All in all, a much lesser work than it’s predecessor. However, there is enough talent that I’ll try the third installment.
I was not too keen on the first book in the Cryptid series. The follow up however has all the ingredients of a creature horror classic. There are far fetched elements that are eventually explained. The action is intense and you are rooting for the leading figures to survive.
Excellent werewolf story! Well written and the characters are believable and well developed. Overall nice bit of history thrown in also. Recommend reading
Started this series hoping to enjoy and didn't disappoint. Has heroes, villains, and blood fodder. Enjoyable read and moving to third as characters develope and strengthen.
Except for the first chapter which was quite boring (I skimmed over a lot of it) this book was a 5 star. Kimberly and Barr from the first book find themselves facing yet another monster.
