I'd just been fired, so the last thing I needed was some guy hitting on me, and I told him so in no uncertain terms. Then he goes and offers me the job of my dreams. Rob was altogether too sure of himself, but if he thought giving me a job was going to win me over, he was crazy. I had sworn off men for the foreseeable future, and that included my new boss. Especially my new boss.
This was such a weird read, all the characters were seemingly supposed to be late 20s/early 30s but all talked like they were at least 50. The pacing was weird, the first half of the book was tedious detail I didn’t care about particularly and an almost minute by minute account but then when anything vaguely interesting happened suddenly it would skip ahead to something else I didn’t actually care about.
Oh and what 30 year old is called Maureen these days? If it wasn’t for the fact this was my first book of the year it would’ve been a DNF
(4.5 stars) - Different but give it a little time to get going
The book begins with Mo seeming to be really ditzy at first, & I nearly bailed - TSTL is cringe not funny - but it wasn't as bad as it seemed (or the author decided to take the character in a stronger direction). Still it took a little for me to warm up to the characters & the story.
Mo is actually fairly intelligent & a thorough smart aleck. She & her roommate & their friends come across as superficial, but there are some hearts beating under their Lost Generation vibe.
The plot begins with Mo's life kind of falling apart, but then as things progress & hers is looking up, everyone else's is falling apart. In the course of all these ups & downs, we get to know her & the other characters better.
Rob is the love interest, but fair warning, Mo is cynically resistant, & it's not till about a third of the way in that she even talks to him about the job he's been trying to offer her, & she gets hired. Then she still plays hard to get cuz he's the boss, & she's gunshy. So this is more like a slow burn.
Once I began to care about the characters, the little vignettes or episodes of Mo's life became interesting & fun. There's a little bit of British slang, but it's nothing bad - if you really want to know, consult Urban Dictionary
The story is lighthearted with some witty dialogue & amusing moments interspersed. I found it to be quite enjoyable despite the iffy start! 👍👍
*Romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic; attitudes on sex are secular & casual, protagonist's man crazy sister is constantly teasing her about sleeping with the hot guy, closed door intimacy implied between 2 married people, but there's nothing graphic
Was a first read from this author and I enjoyed the storyline .... Maureen (Mo ) is the main character she is quirky and for me somewhat endearing. She is hard to like sometimes, she is more or less a smart aleck type and has retorts to practically everything... her way of thinking is also a bit overly snobbish as if she is better than the others she has to deal with ...... some of the British phrases took me some getting used to...............which is normal for someone not familiar with certain terms...... I enjoyed the interaction between all the girlfriends, especially how they took care of one another. The good guys were just that, good guys and the bad ones were dumped.... The story does flow smoothly. It also shows,... even when someone is at their lowest ....good things can be just around the corner...... I will try another book from this author eventually......
The star rating is solely for Rob. This was suppose to be about Mo meeting a guy who offers her dream job despite him wanting to date her. Well, the plot only started happening 65-70% in. I was underwhelmed unfortunately. Beth was the most annoying side character ever.
I did like this one, but there did seem to be a whole gamut of characters that didn't really need to be in it, like the bad barista or all those work colleagues, I know it added to the story but sometimes it just felt like a filler to expand the book, it was a real slow burn, I mean they had their first date quite close to the end of the book, it was a good storyline though, I wonder if there will be a series coming from this with Toby and Carol, Beth and Russel, I would like to see how those are relationships are progressing.
Idk how this book is a rom com book because the fmc and the mmc only talk for like 5 chapters and during does chapter the girl doesn’t like him and the rest is them going on dates and then we get a skip through if the living together they don’t even say I love you in the book and it’s a fade to black with innuendo. This book is not worth your time. Her friends also annoyed me which by the way are talked about a lot because they come out for almost 85% of book. I don’t even know what this book is about.
I would not describe this as a 'sweet romantic comedy'! It was a wonderfully enjoyable, romp of a book, funny and bittersweet - great characters, laugh out loud moments and pathos. I am a big fan of Adele Abbot books; the characters can be outrageously over the top and the main protagonist staggers from one situation to another, with quick thinking wit, acerbic commentary and eternal optimism! Great fun!
This book is a light fun read. The story flows smoothly. It shows even when someone is at their lowest good things can be just around the corner.
This author shows her ability to write a fantastic book away from her usual genre.
The characters are well written with some interesting traits and interact well during the story. There are some great scenarios. It was a joy to read. I hope it will be the first of many from this author in this genre.
I thought it was good especially the first 2/3. Then it just felt kinda rushed at the end. Another couple chapters leading up to the end especially after their first official date would have been great. Instead of just saying the second date is happening "tonight" I would have liked to see a little more than that, and I know it's closed door and everything but for her to go home and then what, leave again after taking a cab. I don't know could have used a little more. But all in all a decent read especially considering that it's not as long as many other romances.

Im not really sure about this book. There were parts of it that made me chuckle and give a little LOL but the focus wasn’t really on the relationship between Mo and Rob. I just felt like there wasn’t alot of substance throughout and then the ending just came out of nowhere. There was no relationship building, the whole thing was just lacking for me, unfortunately.
I am already a big fan of Adele’s “Witch” series, and was expecting a regular romantic comedy, but was pleasantly surprised to find this book so much more: funny, witty, and hard to put down. I look forward to more of the same from brilliant Adele
I've enjoyed all of A Abbott's other series, the dry snarky humor is so right up my alley..Not-a-date did not disappoint, a lovely story of friends, family and meeting the right one..
I liked the story line of Mo and her friends - however, I felt like they were in their 50’s with the way they talked and not a group of women in their late 20’s/early 30’s.
It’s a good Rom Com, but the language and banter threw me off - and I don’t say that because they’re in the UK.
I'll be honest, it took me a while to get into this book. At first I thought all the character were very shallow and had no depth; however, I am glad I stuck with it. I enjoyed the rest of the book and am looking forward to reading more by this author.
This was a sweet little romance with twists and turns for so many! It was fun and funny! Touching story filled with so many love stories of friends finding what they needed
I’ve read all of Adele’s Witch books and was surprised when this popped up for me. Well written and includes her usual sass. Perfect weekend rom-com read for me!
Felt choppy to me- Mo is hard to like sometimes, some of the British phrases take some getting used to. While there's nothing explicit there's some dirty talk.
Tropes: Slow burn/ Reverse Grumpy Sunshine/ one-sided enemies to lover/ HEA
This book is supposed to be a romantic comedy, although, it’s kind of a stretch calling it like that. Mo lost her job and Rob offered her one, he was smitten with her since he first saw her at a club. I thought it was going to be a sweet story about how they fell madly in love while working together. What I got was 70% of Mo arguing and whining with her friends, and being rude to Rob when they interacted (which was almost never). The last 30% of the book was of her trying to tell Rob that wanted to date him, and never had the guts to tell him until the last chapter.
Mo was rude and stubborn, she was worried to date Rob because he was de CEO of the company where she was working at. She had 0 chemistry with the love interest, like I said before, they barely interacted throughout the book.
Rob was a weird hero, to be honest, he saw Mo at a club and was into her immediately. He couldn’t get her attention, so decided to offer her a job. When he talked with Mo he was nice but insisted a lot on dating her, and he rejected him rudely, with no idea why he kept interested in her when she had attitude problems, CLEARLY.
The story had too many side problems that weren’t important, and well there was one of them that wasn’t even solved. It just got mentioned at the end of the book, as if the author forgot about it and just decided to “solve” it at the end of the book.
Would I recommend it? That's a no unless you want to read about attitude problems and mundane situations that happened to women throughout it. There was 0 to no romance, and I wouldn’t consider it a comedy. I didn’t laugh at all.
