Why am I struggling when there’s SO many high reviews?!

-2.5 stars rounded up to 3 (steamy scenes saved you girl)
-RH (7mates)
-completed series
-OW drama
-paranormal (demons)
-steamy scenes
-single POV

I’m reeeeeeaaalllllyyyy gonna need for this story to move along. Our girl is learning to control her powers, she’s falling in love with her mates, and her horns keep growing. She also received a new gift in this book. BUT when you really think about it, nothing major happened at all that actually moves the plot forward.

We did learn more about her and her mates in this book, although some of her mates were just background noise, honestly. Idk if it’s because the authors trying to write about 8 main characters, but I personally think she is struggling to balance the presence of all 7 mates equally.

+Bane. Bane. Bane. Bane+ see below for my issues with klepto

< This isn’t a spoiler unless you haven’t read the first book: SO STOP NOW if you haven’t >

We learned in the first book that Bane is one of her mates but refuses to mate with her due to his idea of protecting her from the resistance.

< STOP NOW if you don’t want a spoiler for THIS book >

first off, he tricks her into mating him (for her own protection), makes her believe he is interested in another woman and then admits he fooled around with said woman all for the sake of the resistance and her protection!!! I’m sorry, you are MATED and you’re putting your job before your mate?! Eff that!! I DONT CARE if he did it to protect her, newsflash... ITS STILL CHEATING. And ole girl just wants to move on like nothing happened. Oh wait, she does say “I need time” but yet has literally not made him grovel at all. Not to mention, even before she found out he full blown cheated on her, she believed he was “interested” in another woman but still spent the majority of the book trying to find away to make him give in and be a real mate to her. Have some self respect girl. ~~ if he don’t love you anymoreeee, walk that fine ass out the door~~

I loved the addition of the imps. Bedroom scenes were steamy as hello!! I love Enzos psycho self. Jin, Kain and Aeron were hardly in this book at all. Poor Jin got it the worst for sure. From all the little hints, I feel like I can already see the ending coming from a mile away, but I’m gonna need it to hurry up and get here already.
Can someone say ~d r a g g i n g~ ?

••••• oh, I ALMOST forgot, supposedly just her presence alone makes an unshown go through their showing. She has no idea how it works but when she walks into a group of unshown they all almost immediately get their power/caste. Okay cool, but explain to me why the unshown that work for the school that she comes across doesn’t turn? Why does every unshown brought to her turn, but yet none of the kitchen staff, Dorian, or her grandmothers assistant, NONE of them turn? Why??? Inconsistent if you ask me.

So basically this was just our FMC walking around saying “I have no idea what’s going on” quite often, getting sexed up by her mates, all excluding Daron, the little tease, and of course Bane, because of reasons I stated above, and trying to figure out how to control her powers.

To continue or not continue? THAT is the question.

Wowwwwww another cliffhanging end.

Fucking kill me I am DYING to know what’s next.

So let’s talk about book number two.

A great read, but was it as good as the first?
fuck no. I already decided that.

So anyway:

THIS IS WHY WE DON’T DO SEVEN MATES.

You could tell she was grasping at making sure they were all represented. Plus you add in two imps, three handmaidens, all of the professors. Plus the two friends from the last book just up and disappeared.

Keep in mind it’s been a hot minute since book one. Time has passed, and our brains sometimes need reminding.

Basically, it took me a second to remember everyone.

The men:
Enzo was the heart of this book. I was getting A LOT of Christian Grey vibes. The violin, the apartments, the troubled past.
Ooh la la
Tie in the spanking and mysterious key to Blaze’s apartment, you could tell this author loves herself a Red Room Novel.
Bane was certainly the bane of her existence this book. Lololol. But alas, he did improve.
Aeron: Poor guy. That’s all I have to say. He’s in the back burner. Along with Jin.

SO:

The Ambrosiax family tree is falling like dead limbs in the winter.
Professor Saxon has a stick SO BIG shoved up her ass for... what’s the reason again? And I’m still wondering why Lilith just blindly and obediently follows her..

The Resistance clearly has some breech issues.

The other schools are community trash apparently.

Lilith can now make unshown demons go into their showings.

All of this and we still don’t know what the fuck is going on.
If the next book is another timeline of her classes with a cute little report card at the end, consider me done.

I need more from the next installment. Onward with the plot. What are we fighting for again? Equality for the unshown, right? So let’s get there and not drag it out any further.

Besides that, yesss I did like this book. ;)

DNF @ 54%. SPOILERS below.
I truly love the heart rending some books can provide as characters learn and grow but only when issues are actually dealt with so that growth can happen. Nothing that's happened so far has actually been dealt with, emotions and relationship issues are just forgiven after bouts of sex or because something dramatic happens so everyone just figures it doesn't need to be a thing anymore. There are so many examples of this, but the ones that are stopping me in my tracks from finishing one more chapter of this series have to do with Bane. Not only was him forcing the bond on her brushed aside because she was worried after he disappeared on her for two weeks, but then she spends months chasing after him for crumbs of his attention while he spends time with another woman. And this entire time he expects to be treated as a mate like all the others. I had already decided to stop reading when I went looking for spoilers in other reviews and found that his idiotic sense of protection included cheating on her and she just forgives him like she has everything else for the past two books. She's a doormat with zero self respect, who doesn't even have the drive to help others around her or to every TRY unless she's forced to, and I have yet to see one reason in two books to tell me why she was chosen by the Strange God to be his champion. And honestly a heartbreaking but hopeful story about a mate that cheats but then fights and works his way back to being forgiven and trusted somehow is something I'd love to read--if she even had the backbone to make him earn it. But she doesn't, and he doesn't, and this reader has more self respect than to continue reading shit like that.

I don’t know why I’m still reading these when I just keep adding insults to the reasons I dislike Lilith.

Like the fact that’s she’s a goody-goody, tattletale, with no sense of reality, who is whiny and incredibly lazy and weak-willed.

Book: 3 stars

Idk if I’ll continue the series… Lilith is a little to woe is me and she’s supposed to be a kick ass demon… I love her mates Enzo and Daron though!

I think this would be higher rated if we had all the POVs of the mates…

This series will hopefully only continue to get better because I really enjoyed this one. I found the book hard to put down and seemed to breeze right through. With seven mates, I expected the series to be bogged down with tons of sex and somehow it's not been. Instead there are riveting story lines, demon drama and a gaggle of characters who just want to make it to graduation.

A Demon's Gifts covers Lilliths 2nd year at Vice and times are certainly changing for her. Many of those in her caste are set to graduate at years end and that's if Lillith can even make it that far. Her mates continue to woo her in their own ways and I loved getting to see all their unique personalities. I was honestly worried I'd forget all her men cause I mean there are seven and that's a lot, (especially to all be revealed in the first book) but I'm not having that problem at all. The bond between them all is growing and now Lillith can do a lot more than just sense their emotions such as having silent conversations with them in her head. Luckily these talents and gifts from the Strange God are working in her favor and helping to keep her alive.

The shadow organization trying to eliminate Lilith are still up to their old games but I felt things were a lot more silent this time around which does not bode well for the next book. Lillith fortunately is learning to harness her abilities and even take lessons from her mates so she can better protect herself. This time around she gets more physical alterations from the Strange God and I'm really excited if she'll get anything else. Really enjoying this series. Hope the last two are just as good!!!

The development of this series continues in a solid way, and the characters develop well. The plot does seem to stall at points where it seems like nothing is really happening, and when action does happen it seems to be resolved quickly, which wasn’t a bad thing, it just left some things to be desired. Time does absolutely fly, so it seems like maybe that’s why the developing action happens less? I’m moving to the third book now and i just hope there’s more action moving forward rather than just preparing.

I did enjoy that there was a struggle with one of her bonds, i liked that big of drama lol

Really good

Picking up where we left off in book 1, we get more of Lilith and her men. The relationships are developing, some better than others for sure. Some drama unfolds but it all helps bringing them closer.

We get more from the Strange God (really like that name btw, makes for a nice change when it comes to deities), as well as the enemies of our MCs. Some twists and unexpected events I was pleasantly surprised by. I really like all our characters and how they interact/rely on each others. They are family and I love that for them.

I’m ready for more of those characters and for Lilith to get even more bada*s !

Ugh! I hate when it ends on a good part

Well I'm glad that Babe finally came to his senses and we found out why he was doing what he did.

It was also nice to hear Enzo's story right before the end, but why end there?

Professor Saxxon has me going back and forth trying to figure out if she is truly bad or trying to help prepare Lilith behind the scenes.

I just love all these characters.

Lilith has finally found her mates, although she hasn't bonded to all of them yet. For one reason or another, there are forces that try to keep them apart and drive wedges between their relationship. We find out more about Lilith's purpose, the enemy, and Lilith even gets a special new present from the Strange God. The book ends with a cliffhanger, and I need to see what Enzo will do next.

So although I was literally counting down the days for the release, I got sequel fright and didn’t touch it. So many books have left me disappointed and I was worried this would be another one. Unneeded worry I loved it probably more than the first.

The intro was over in the first book and all put one mate was claimed. I had a feeling I would adore Enzo and I was right. He makes up for Bane’s idiocy and more. Really wanna see some Chess or meeting extras.

The guys are over protective and Lilith is a little bit damsel in distress and a touch whiny. The ones that stood out were Enzo and Daron in a very good way and Bane in a bad way, the others are balanced well but looking forward to more one on one interactions.

There was the for your own good betrayal moment that made me dislike Blaze a bit and very much dislike for Bane. Still sitting on the fence with Aeron.

Enzo is amazing and my favourite character,
The guys would have to create a miracle to top that. Already he’s made sure Lilith is secure, doesn’t push her and keeps his word. He’s got a bit of a temper and I loved how quick and efficient he is in dealing with things he doesn’t like.

Not one to be overshadowed you’ve got the prideful Kain not going away and again I’d love to see an extra of Enzo and Kain. So many little surprises and none of the characters slip up from their personality traits.

The story plot itself is building, although still unclear in places. i.e what the heck Saxon is doing and who are the other members? Very much looking forward to the next one.

Yet ANOTHER disappointing second book in an RH series that I've read, where the first book is perfect while the second book falls off a cliff&has me so pissed that I am no longer interested in reading any more.

The scene where she's tricked into the bond with Bane (while Blaze&Aeron let it happen&force it to happen) is so vile&unforgivable to me that I literally can't go on reading this series now.

It's too much of a betrayal&this character is way too forgiving so I know that she's going to forgive him&forgive them&I can't read it any longer. I can't.

I'm so angry that this happened because I thought I finally found a perfect RH series to devour&instead the author forced me to forever stop loving&stop caring about 3 of the main love interests in the series. WTAF???!!

I'll definitely miss reading about Daron, Jin and Kain (Jin my sweet sweet summer child)&will miss the craziness of Enzo but I have to stop here.

Some authors do crap like this (have 1 or more of the harem betray the MC's trust in a huge terrible unforgivable way) too often in this genre&expect every reader to simply go along with the BS, without any complaint&it's so unfortunate cuz it's so unnecessary.

I'm done talking about this book series now&am erasing it from my memory, so..

Thanks for absolutely nothing!

I'm going to keep reading because I'm invested but man, Lilith is one of the most annoying characters ever! All she does is complain about her gifts and sulk. She doesn't want to use them and when she does she almost has a breakdown. She knows what happens to students who don't go through their showing but freaks out about helping them. One student died and so she doesn't ever want to help anyone else? If they knew there was that risk and still wanted to participate, she should respect their choice. I do feel like having seven in her harem is too much because we don't get a lot of time with any of them. My favorite is Enzo because he doesn't try to be someone he's not and seems the most practical. Lilith is stupid for trying to get him to not kill Senior Judge Abrosiax when he is literally always trying to kill her. Does she not want to live? Does she think he'll just stop? She needs to grow up and accept that she has enemies that want her DEAD and let her mates help with that problem.

After finishing book 2, I can confidently state that I will not be continuing the series.

I am BIG on harem happiness, and if I don't love the harem, the overall enjoyment is almost nonexistent for me.

I almost DNF at 27% because I was uncomfortable with how overbearing Blaze was.

At 45% I, again, contemplated DNF due to the continued pigheadedness of Bane. Honestly, he's a terrible dude.

At 65%, I wanted to put it down just to expedite the reading process.

And at 80%, I began skimming for diaolgue because there was so much extra fluff in her inner monologue, feelings, and scene descriptions that I was unable to focus any longer.

I loved Enzo. I adore Kain and Jin. Daron is sweet as pie. The real problem is these are all mates that get minimal page time.

Blaze gets quite a bit of page time, Bane and his stupidity monopolize a LOT of Lillith's time and energy. To the point that the spicy scenes are initiated to get a reaction out of him.

The finale didn't do anything for me either. A seemingly large reveal was completely brushed off with the disdain given to a used tissue.

***

The first year at Vice College for Young Demons was completed and Lilith not only managed to pass all her classes but also fulfill the Strange God's plan and find and bond all of her seven mates.

And they drive her insane.

One of the few things all six of her mates seem to agree on is that she should never be alone with her deadly new mate, Enzo.
But he is ingenious as he is mad and no one can keep in from what he wants.
And he wants to spend time with Lilith. And to kill everyone who might harm her.
It is only fair.
The others have her all the other days.

And Bane, despite forging the bond, he has not truly accepted it.
It is to protect her, he says.
But not only is he putting some distance between them but also refusing to open up to Lilith, preferring to spend time with a member of his secret rebel team.

The classes are harder.
She needs to control her abilities if she wants to pass the year.

But school is just one of their problems, Lilith still has people after her, no one is safe, their enemies can be anywhere.

***

Notes:

🔸 World building: interesting

It is not the most developed, immersive, complex or innovative world but it has an interesting, well supported take on demons and the 7 deadly sins.

🔸Castes

It is fascinating how the sins are turned into castes and how those are related to the way the demons gain their power, especially if the addition of the sub-castes are taken into consideration.

For example:
- Someone from sloth with sub-caste sleep: their power charges when they sleep but that does not mean they cannot be athletic people

But also, some demons really are the embodiment of their sin.
For example:
- Someone from Sloth, sub-caste Indifference is indeed completely indifferent to everything.

It does get a bit confusing what really decides the caste but it doesn't take from the story.

🔸Academy setting

Better than most academy books.
We do get to see them in classes and having work to do and tests to take, worried about balancing their relationship with their study, their problems, friends and enemies.

🔸Mates

The way the first book ended and with Enzo's introduction I thought "yes! Finally! The morally grey (black) to shake this up!". But overall it was quite tame. Nice, but it could have more juice to it. More emotional connection but nope.

Overall I was expecting more romance, for it to have more depth.

A bit of pining for each other, the insecurity of the first relationship, getting to know one another, learning how to deal with more than one mate, struggling with the social norms for relationships...fall in love not just lust.
But meh. Nice but not all that satisfying.

Also, some inconsistencies.

In the first book, it was mentioned that not every mate was faithful or that they had a romantic relationship even if they accepted the bond.

Then, later on the first book, it is said that mates cannot find other people attractive, having no interest in others.

But now it alludes to the possibility of mates being able have other relationships outside the mate bond...

So which is it?

🔸 Inconsistencies

Overall there are some scenes that seem to develop a bit too quickly, with no doubts nor struggle not just the romance part but the plot as well.

- the FMC is too quick to accept/forgive
The guys do some things to her that I find difficult to believe she just accepted.
The way they invade her privacy and make decisions for her at times...
Some of it is quite hurtful and even traumatic, it should have shaken any fragile trust they have between them but no, just a bit of frustration but next time they meet she is already forgiving them.
It is illogical.
She is a person with feelings and needs and those have been hurt and violated.
Where is the anger? The guys barely express a hint of an apology and she is already opening her harms.

- over reactions
In contrast to all the lack of a proper reaction, they do over react sometimes, not as frequent but still.

- Bane being a commander: I don't see it!
Really think about it, he was a commander even before having his showing.
Which means he didn't even have power yet!!!
So, for him to be a commander without power, he should be a very dangerous, smart man, right? Or do they promote anyone?
Besides, it doesn't fit him. What is shown of him gives more of a spy vibe, assassin even, a loner, a solo player than a commander and team leader. It just doesn't seem to go with his personality/behaviour.

- Blaze not being able to see Onyx and Ivory
It was said that few people can see them, but seers are some of those who can.
Rina can so why not Blaze?

I have decided to give my views on this book as I am reading it. I thought that would make the experience more interesting. I will try to keep it as spoiler free as possible, but no promises so just a reminder in case.
So, by the end of book 1, we know that Lilith found her seven mates and that there is a group that wants to unalive her because of some caste prejudices? Also, they want to take over the other castes? I guess, but that's not clear. Anyways, what are we looking forward in this one? More character depth perhaps? I sure hope so....

At 10% ...... I wanted to mention this at the end of previous book, that I feel like Lilith is kind of harsh on Aeron (more than necessary) I get that he can be a little overbearing sometimes, but he also understands well if she explains to him. But, she rarely has patience with him. I understand that she is gifted with seven mates and that the guys need to learn to get along with each other. But, still she needs to be patient with them when it doesn't work out between them sometimes. Aeron liked her from the start way before he knew she was his mate. So, he had to come to terms with it and also he had to share her with six others. It might not easy for him, while the others were made aware of the situation right away. She needs to help him deal with the jealousy.

At 26% ....... If I were Lilith, I would actually listen to Rina's suggestion and burn those blue roses. He deserves it. How dare he!?
On the other hand, I am enjoying seeing Lilith try to master her powers and academics. It's certainly not easy. But, if she gains control over those powers, she is going to be déádly during fights.

At 52% ...... I just want to say, I love Enzo! Who wouldn't want to have someone in their life who can múrder their problems away? 😂 Daron would be my second favorite, because he is so smart that its séxy. I am disappointed how Aeron has become more like a background character. I loved him since the beginning, his meeting Lilith was so interesting (the initiation) ..... Bane is irritating me.

Okay, I have a question. Why haven't we heard from the Knights again? Don't they have meetings to discuss their plans? And, what are their plans by the way?

Somewhere around 75% ..... I have to mention this, since I know cheating is a big no-no to some people, especially if it happens within the harem. So yeah, one of the guys cheats on Lilith, not because he wanted to. No, apparently he was trying to protect Lilith. But, really in the long run that was so pointless because when they do end up in danger Lilith was more than capable enough to save both of them out of that situation. He should have just trusted her powers and now, this has left a bad taste in my mouth. I can't forget what he did, no matter he didn't like it or not. He could have been otherwise a likeable character. Now, he is just going to be a black spot.
That's why Aeron was my favorite from the start. He was loyal to Lilith even before he knew they were mates.

At 87% ..... It's annoying how none of her mates trust her to succeed with her powers, like come on some of them are suppose to be knights with Lilith being the lady chosen by the Strange God himself. I hate how they just disregard her opinions regarding this.

So, I am done. What can I say? I am disappointed in Lilith. Sometimes, she sounds like a bádass and most of the times, she is just whining and complaining that she can't do something even though she has all the powers in her hands. And, it was exhausting to see how ignorant she is about the demon world/politics. I feel like most of her mates would have actually liked her as a partner if not for the mate bonds to make them disinterested in others. I don't see what can attract them towards her.

The ending,..... Seriously? I can't believe she was trying to save the man. Doesn't she realise that he had to díe one way or the other, now or later. So dumb that was. And, then she was trying to stop Enzo from taking his revenge. Why? What right did that give her?

Ughh..... pretty lame, but got to finish the series.

***** Review with spoilers *****

Honestly, this book was better than the first one. Most of the problems I had with the previous one weren’t here, or at least were very light to deal with. It still wasn’t a perfect book, and it definitely wasn’t one of the author’s best, but it was for sure an improvement.

I still had problems with the flow of the story though. Some situations happened and were resolved too fast and without proper consequences, like the Abrosiax family being murdered, or Circe suddenly becoming a problem for Lilith and then being taken out just as quickly. Even the timeline felt off, with a few days being presented in detail—sometimes unnecessarily — only for the story to suddenly skip ahead two weeks or even two months out of nowhere.

I also think the way the author keeps piling more and more onto Lilith’s plate gets in the way of anything being well developed. The feeling you get while reading is that she’s always running against time, constantly tired, and buried under endless responsibilities. Because of that, there are very few moments of real development between her and her Mates. Their connections feel shallow, almost like they’re just there but not really involved, which is disappointing when you compare it to other series where the mates are truly entangled in the protagonist’s life.

I did love how a sort of pet was added into the story, and how the author leaned into the “found family” trope. Those touches were great, but once again, they didn’t get the development they deserved. Lilith is so overwhelmed with everything else that we barely get to enjoy those aspects.

I feel like the book could have been amazing if instead of throwing in even more responsibilities, roles, the author had focused on developing the ones Lilith already had. I mean, she’s the Chosen One for the Strange God, she has seven mates, she’s the head of her house, sits as an Elder, has to deal with big powers and secondary gifts, literally needs sex to function, is part of a Secret Society, has a found family, parents who tried to kill her, pets to care for… and the list keeps going. That’s enough arcs and responsibilities for at least two protagonists, maybe three. The truth is, all of these elements make her story intense and layered, but at times, it feels like there’s so much going on that the book can’t give each part the focus it deserves.

All those things being said, it’s Marie Mistry, so the writing is engaging and addicting enough that you keep reading, curious to see how everything will unfold. The book went fast and was extremely addictive, so much so that I couldn't put it down, and the characters still held me interested the entire time, even with all those problems I noticed.

In the end, it was a good and entertaining read, but one that left me wishing it had taken its time and really gone deeper to explore everything it had to offer. Even with all the chaos and responsibilities, I still finished it feeling satisfied with the journey and attached to the characters.

Enter the second year at Vice College for Lilith! I was happy this book didn’t suffer from second-book syndrome, where everything begins to fall apart and its boring to read through. There were many parts of this book that really added to the story and help set up for the oncoming books in the series. Not to mention, it’s always a joy to read about Lilith and her hottie mates!

We pick up right where we left off in A Demon’s Horns and are introduced to Enzo, Lilith’s final mate. A trained assassin, Lilith isn’t sure what to make of the male who was tasked with ending her life. Not going to lie, he quickly became one of my favorites. Right alongside Daron, the sweet white shining knight. Of course, the others are great as well with one exception. Bane. We still see him resisting his bond with Lilith in the beginning of the book, going as far as to openly flirt with another woman in front of Lilith. His excuse for not wanting Lilith to be in danger because of his Resistance ties is quickly slipping and his explanations are getting old. Seriously, he is my least favorite. Especially with what is revealed later on, I just couldn’t even deal.

With other things in the mix besides Bane, like Headmistress Saxon and Circe Abrosiax, Lilith’s second year has some bumps along the way. The Syndicate is still trying to kill her, she doesn’t have control of her newly discovered powers, and a definitely more challenging course load has Lilith needing the help of her guys to keep her grounded. They, of course, are magnificent at it. I love learning more about them and it’s super adorable to see how much they care about Lilith.

The ending of this book was a cliffhanger (a mild one) and I felt really pulled into continuing the series. With the end of second year, it’ll be interesting to see how the dynamics change between Lilith and her guys as the third year starts.
