You know you need a reader magnet. You know it will help you attract newsletter subscribers, launch to a bigger audience, and find more success as an indie author. You know that a good reader magnet can turn casual readers into superfans, and superfans into evangelists.
Everyone says so.
But knowing and doing are two different things , especially when all the advice out there is overwhelming and confusing.
Write this, not that. Use this service instead of that one. Give away a whole book. No, give away sample chapters. No, write a short story.
If only someone would just give you the information you need to craft killer bonus content that lures all the right readers to your mailing list signup, and turns all the wrong ones away at the door!
Well, you’re in luck. Tammi Labrecque — indie author, mailing list whiz-kid, and author of the best-selling Newsletter Ninja — is back with an all-new book that will kickstart you on your reader magnet journey.
Newsletter Ninja 2: If You Give a Reader a Cookie is a thorough breakdown of all the aspects of reader magnets—from choosing which type to write, through planning how it fits into your catalog, to getting it into readers’ hands. Written in the same down-to-earth style as Newsletter Ninja , and packed just as full of solid information and useful ninja tips, Newsletter Ninja 2 will help
• Recognize the difference between a good reader magnet and a bad one • Ditch the false dichotomy of organic vs incentivized subscribers • Identify the two types of readers you want to attract, and how to lure both with one reader magnet • Build a solid plan for which reader magnets go where, and how they fit into your catalog • Discover more than a dozen types of reader magnets • Sample a variety of existing reader magnets, and see what’s possible!
Whether you’re ready to whip up that first reader magnet or want to optimize the ones you already have, Newsletter Ninja 2 has got you covered.
Authors – both indie and trad-pubbed – need to do their own marketing. And most authors suck at marketing. One of the best tools at our disposal is email marketing - but again most authors suck at this.
This this plain-language how-to guide for authors delivers exactly the content indie authors need in implementable steps interspersed with the author's trademark good-natured snarktasm.
much anticipated and finally arrived! Tammi is the go-to resource for all things newsletter-related for authors. This is a short, concise, very to the point guide on loss leaders/reader magnets/ninja-distriubted cookies. Told with Tammi's signature self-deprecating humor. Tammi, if you read this, you're the best! Keep em coming!
Clear and to the point. This book covers best practices for creating and delivering a freebie (or many) to your author email list. Lots of great ideas for different kinds of freebies too. Recommended for indie authors.
More about everything you need to know For your newsletter to be great p
Clear, concise and readable. Tammy Labreque Is both funny and bossy in a good way. Her information on reader magnets is worth the price of the book in itself. Everyone should have this book along with her 1st book. If you are guilty of emailing your readers only when you have a new release grab this primer today. Simply the best.
Tammi Labrecque is the go-to expert on doing author newsletters, in part because she is a kind, generous and funny guru. (I mean, how come gurus always seem so serious?) So here’s her second book, and it’s just as useful — and kind, generous and funny— as the first. Highly recommend to any author, no matter what stage you’re at in your career.
A follow up to Newsletter Ninja, this is a short and sweet book on reader magnets full of great advice and insights. I've read NN1 before, but it certainly isn't necessary to understand this one.
So much good information presented in Tammi’s unique style made this a book I will go back to time and time again . . . Until I get it right. Lots of great examples and ideas. I think I simply gorged myself! Now where’s the milk?
This was a nice follow up to the first Newsletter Ninja book and went into detail on not only the idea of a perfect cookie/reader magnet, but also a bit that Tammi felt she skimmed over in the first book about organic and non-organic subscribers.
Once again, it was some great information packed into a smaller package. I got through it in two sittings, but I am also someone who reads and highlights and then goes over the highlights one more time, so time to finish may vary based on how you learn.
I got some good ideas for reader magnets for my upcoming series (and why its important to have more than one) and Tammi helped change my mind on how to treat different newsletter subscribers.
I loved Newsletter Ninja 2 and eagerly grabbed this one when it released. Newsletter Ninja 2 is another solid read and all about reader magnets AKA cookies as the author calls them. I thought this book had some good advice, but for me there wasn't much I didn't know yet and the whole tactics and strategies thing she spend a whole chapter on was something I already understood when she explained it shorter in book 1. I just didn't get as much out of it as I had hoped. I think for new(er) authors who don't know a lot about reader magnets this one has some good information and tips. This book covers the topic broadly and will give you a good idea of what reader magnets are and ideas for them.
Short but packed full of information! It had some questions that got my imagination going. It had case studies to see all that's possible (including a link to a secret page with more examples!). It had an outline of things to keep in mind when designing a reader magnet. All in all, it was exactly what I needed as I'm moving forward to revamp my email list (in addition to Newsletter Ninja 1, of course).
Not a bad book by any means, but not one that personally gave me a lot of new info. If you, however, are absolutely new to reader magnets and/or a new author, definitely pick this up.
Tammi expands on the guidance from her first book with specific advice around “cookies”. It was well worth the investment, as she identified several things I was doing wrong and some right things that I wasn’t doing at all. Buy it today, but only if you’re interested in becoming more professional in your writing career. Now I am back to my computer to fix my mistakes.
Excellent summary of reader magnets and options authors have for developing one or more reader magnets to build their email lists and sell more books. Tammi knows her stuff!
This book had some great info about newsletter reader magnets. I had an epiphany moment when it discussed strategies. It's a great read for anyone wanting to learn more about reader magnets!
This is a good reminder of what to do and not do. I highly recommend putting into action what Tammi has said here. It's been paying off for me and I just got confirmation that my idea has already been done so I won't be breaking new ground with my next cookie and have it crumble under the weight of doing something new.
I really struggle with writing newsletters. Ms Labrecque has done it again and I’m fired with enthusiasm for writing a reader magnet for my new cosy mystery series.
A perfect follow-up to the original book, and super timely for me. I loved all the ideas and additional data Tammi presented about what works and what doesn't to entice readers to join your mailing list. And she did it all in her signature witty banter-like style.
I always learn a lot from Tammi. This book is no different! Even though I’m not a traditional author, Tammi writes in such a way that allows you to take her wisdom and apply it to any genre… even crochet authors.
Ninja #2 is much better to read in terms of a calmer, factual tone and detailed content - maybe because it has updated info. However, its probably best to read Ninja #1 first as that has more of an overview.
Great advice! I've heard Labrecque speak and started on this program of cookies, and now that I've read the book, I feel like I'm on the right path. Simple, plain language steps out how to create cookies to build a reader list. Reading her suggestions, also sent all sorts of ideas for stories. Well worth the time of reading.
Tammi Labrecque is a genius with a tangential, mile-a-minute, flippant style of writing that's either going to annoy you or delight you. I lean toward annoyance but I always read her books for those "I never thought of that" moments because that woman is one heck of an idea generator (if you really want the full Tammi, buy her courses and do the live workshops).
Let's just say: there's a lot in this book. Undoubtedly THE book you should read if you're an author trying to grow your audience. Get your highlighter out.
While there are some nuggets of information to be culled from this book, most of it is a rehash of the previous book with a few chapters on what makes a good reader magnet and the process for determining that.
I don’t feel what new information Labrecque gives warranted a whole new book, especially one that touted itself as being focused on reader magnets.
Had Labrecque released this as a second addition of Newsletter Ninja, I could have justified the price, but for a book marketed as being about reader magnets to spend most of the book regurgitating info not about the topic at hand is unacceptable.
The few chapters Labrecque dedicated to reader magnets are mostly things readers of the first book could glean on their own. I’m also skeptical of her advice to have covers designed for each of your reader magnets, as most independent authors like me don’t have spare money to spend on such things.
Overall, while I learned some new things from this book, it was nowhere as good or detailed as the first book and doesn’t warrant the list price. I give Newsletter Ninja 2 3.0 out of 5.0 stars.
This second Newsletter Ninja book is much shorter than the first book, mainly because the topic is incredibly focused.
I’m not an indie author, but after reading Tammi’s first newsletter book, I became a super fan. As a blogger who struggles with email marketing, I appreciate Tammi’s attitude and advice. She really gets me thinking about the content I’m creating for my subscribers.
While I didn’t find this book as helpful as the first, I’m also not her target audience, which is clearly stated in the subtitle. Even so, I’ve got an idea for a nonfiction book, and I enjoy Tammi’s self-deprecating humor and thoughts on the world of indie publishing.
If you’re an author struggling with email marketing, both of the Newsletter Ninja books will help you. This book about lead magnets includes a link to lots of example lead magnets from other authors.
If you want to avoid the mistakes and pitfalls of creating a newsletter list, READ THIS BOOK FIRST.
They say “a reader magnet is the go-to for developing a newsletter list filled with your ideal reader” but this is only true if you follow the wisdom expressed clearly and humorously in this book.
When I finished reading it, I felt “encouraged.” Maybe it was because of her casual, friendly style not afraid to express her own foils and mishaps, maybe it was because I saw a lot of things I was doing right, maybe it was because the things I needed to do felt within my grasp, but I felt like I was given-the-courage and the know-how to do it BETTER.
I’m very glad that I got this book. I’m also on her FB group, which I recommend you joining to talk about things we are working through inspired by this book and by the first book of the set. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
The first book by the author on newsletters was nothing short of brilliant and therefore when this book was announced I had no doubt about ordering one. While it did provide some insight, there was very little New under the sun, a lot of unnecessary rambling on parentheses, and overall a much shorter book than I had expected.
