3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.

The Duke is Wicked  is the third book in Tracy Sumner's League of Lords series and is a historical romance set in a Victorian England where individuals harbor a varity of supernatural abilities.

I've really liked Sebastian's character from what we had learned of his so far in the previous books, so I was happy to see that this book would focus on his character. I enjoyed the book, Sebastian and Delaney were sweet together. I am a real big fan of anything historical with a supernatural twist and so I have been quite enjoying this series as it builds. But I must admit that I think this has been my least favorite of the series thus far. Which was a little disappointing to me as I had been looking forward to reading Sebastian's book and learning more about his ability and backstory.

The drawback for me was the blackmail storyline. It was a huge part of the plot until...it wasn't. It just sort of faded into the background for a bit and then it was resolved in a very anti-climactic fashion. I know that it is going to lead into another book, but it felt like we were worried about an enemy for so long and then it was was like meh, nevermind.

I'm also really curious to learn more about Simon's character, as his ability to see and communicate with ghosts is really intruiging to me. Based on the epilogue, I am assuming that the next book will be about him and so I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

“The Duke is Wicked” is the third book in the wonderful ‘League of Lords’ series from Tracy Sumner. After experiencing the excellent first 2 books in the series, I have been eagerly awaiting this one. And I learned what is now my new favorite word for tipsy or inebriated: Sozzled. I hope you’ve already had the pleasure of reading the previous books in this series, but if you haven’t don’t worry because you can definitely enjoy this story as a stand-alone. I will warn you that you’ll want to go back and read those other books when you’re done with this one.

This series blends Regency romance with all different types of characters possessing supernatural abilities. Sebastian, the Duke, has been blessed/cursed with the ability to start fires, but it is an ability he struggles to control. He was such an intriguing character already in the series, and as we get to learn so much more about him he becomes even more compelling. Such a beautiful but tormented soul. Delaney, a young American woman in England for mysterious reasons to do with her astounding brain, turns out to be the woman who sets his shielded heart on fire – much to his dismay. She is unabashedly unconventional, yet ironically she yearns for very conventional dream of having a husband who will loving and devoted to her.

The complicated and passionate relationship that develops between them reveals closely guarded secrets, fears and dreams. I found a little bit of the crisis surrounding Delaney somewhat confusing, but aside from that I thought this story was terrific. Sebastian and Delaney much each face their own respective demons and decide if the path forward is one they will take together. The secondary characters add lots of vibrancy to the story, and I thought the ending was excellent. The set up for the next book in the series show may give you chills! I’m looking forward to it already.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Apparently, lots of people in Ms Summer's Victorian 🌎world have occult abilities of one kind or another. Each of the men in the League of Lords has a different supernatural ability.

This is a fun, different book, which I really enjoyed.

Will his fears destroy their burgeoning romance ...

This is the second book in this series I have read, I missed the previous one because I lacked time at the period of its release. Still it is lined on some of my shelves waiting for a more free schedule.
I have read other works by the author, but this series once again leaves me with mixed feelings.
I am a marvel and dc fan girl, they enlightened my teens intermixed with Barbara Cartland books and Elquest, I know quite a mix. So there is nothing more I love then a dash of paranormal in my historical romances.
And here it is X-men meet Jane Eyre.
Yet like my previous read, I struggled at time to catch the thoughts or perspectives the author wanted to infuse in her characters. I got regularly lost in her line of thinking.
Still once the first quarter of the story has settled, I began to really enjoy it. Delaney and Sebastian’s journey to their HEA is a complex rollercoaster playing hot and cold as they must acknowledge their attraction but also their inner fears and face the reality of their differences.
Sébastien lives with the terror of losing control, of letting his power take over himself. Why he tried to dose his cursed gift with opium, or he went to war where he would do less damage than in a civilized crowd and why he also believes only a woman who does not stir him up nor arouse him is the right answer to continue his line.
After having witnessed his friends finding women who sooth their mind and quiet their gift, he truly thinks a woman he is not drawn to is the right one for him when an other sparks his interest and provokes him which scares him to no end, afraid he might loose his tight control over his gift.
Delaney is from one side on the run, on the other trying to find a way out. She fled her homeland, a place she never felt she belonged to a new one which ostentatiously rejects her because she was not born among it. Yet she has no other choice than to stay there as it is her only exit ticket to her predicament.
But now she has been caught, she must decide which new path does she want to follow, she is torn between her attraction to Sebastian, his rank and her insecurities.
One sure is certain they know how to blow hot and cold, igniting a room by their mere presence and spending time to scorch the atmosphere around them and more.

So everything considered, even the disconcerting beginning, it is a story I liked and now I want to know about Simon and his dream lady.

When it becomes clear that the League’s scared book ~ The chronology has been accessed by someone outside the League, they want answers. Using their gifts, they determine the culprit is none other than Delaney Temple, one of the “Terrible Two”, she and her twin brother recently arrived from America, gossip has it that Delaney is a hellion, an heiress with no interest in marriage. Julian knows that she accessed the book when she came to his home and pretended to need help with her carriage, but they want to know why and more importantly how she was able to copy a book with more than a thousand pages when she had less than 10 minutes. These are questions that need answers and Sebastian Tremont, the Duke of Ashcroft is the man to get them!

But when Sebastian approaches Delaney, he is dumbstruck by her, and unfortunately, before he can regain his senses, he is stung by a bee and suffers an allergic reaction. Delaney jumps into action and saves his life by removing the stinger and giving him mouth to mouth – an act that parkgoers assume was a kiss. Delaney takes Sebastian back to her home and tends him and in doing so learns more about him and the League. Delaney doesn’t want to harm the members, she has a gift herself – she stores information in what she calls her “attic” which contains all the books and information she has collected – she enters and it is like a library and she can reread anything she has stored. But her gift isn’t the reason she is interested in the League, someone is blackmailing her and demanding information about The chronology and the League’s members – someone who followed her from America and will destroy not only her but her brother as well if she doesn't comply.

When Sebastian recovers, he wants answers, but Delaney isn’t cooperating, so he whisks her and her brother away to his castle in Oxfordshire. Sebastian and Delaney try to figure out who is blackmailing her and soon realize that her blackmailer is not the threat they believed. Once the threat has passed, Sebastian finally has to confront his attraction to Delaney and attracted though he is and even though his feelings are engaged, Sebastian is sure Delaney is all wrong for him, he is a Firestarter and thinks he needs someone who will calm him and it is clear that Delaney inflames him. But the heart wants what the heart wants and once they give in to their passion, Sebastian decides that they will marry – too bad Delaney doesn’t agree to his terms.

This is the second book I have read by this author, and I am still not sure if I am a fan or not. The author’s writing style is at times almost secretive – like the author doesn’t want the reader to be privy to any of the character's secrets or inner thoughts, but this book was less so than the first book I read. She also butchers formal address and nobility titles – again, not as bad in this book as the first -but still enough to be annoying to me. Personally, I found this story was much more engaging than the previous book I read and I found Sebastian and Delaney very easy to like, the chemistry between them was amazing (the author did a great job with their slow-burn romance) and Sebastian's final proposal was magnificent. So while she nailed their interactions, I felt that the mystery of the blackmailer was completely anticlimactic and the storyline was dropped about the halfway point and seemed to be forgotten until the epilogue. Overall, it was a decent read, but still not something I would read again. This is the third book in the series and I would recommend reading the books in order as the author can be a bit stingy about sharing details.

Tracy Sumner, where have you been all my life! I’ve never read anything like the league of lords series and it’s exactly what I needed — such an enchanting mix of the historical romances I grew up on that also brings the itch-scratching satisfaction of the paranormal/supernatural genre, and did I mention they’re hot as hell? 🔥 Once you start I can guarantee you won’t get any work done until you’ve finished them all. Love this and can’t wait to read the story of Simon and his ghost later this year!

Romance burns through the pages quite literally in this, the 3rd installment of The League of Lords series. The story follows Sebastian Tremont, the Duke of Ashcroft, aka fireballs, and Delaney Temple, a notorious American miss, with the extraordinary gift of speed reading and memory as the navigate the treacherous waters of society rules and their own acceptance of their supernatural abilities. In my opinion, this is the best book of the series so far. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received a free copy of this from BookSirens and this is my freely given opinion.

We met Sebastian Tremont in the previous books in the League of Lords series; the fire-starter Duke of Ashcroft. He is definitely a dark, broody, angsty hero. After all, how can you have any joy, hope, or healthy relationships in your life if the moment you let your guard down, you can cause an inferno? The Duke seems to have found some comfort in his relationships with the other members of the League, as they all share and suffer from the challenges of their supernatural talents. They are his friends and family and he would do what he can to protect them - especially as his own family are dead. Not that they cared for him anyways, especially with his fire-starting curse.

Delaney Temple is a brash American heiress. She and her twin live outside of Society, and in defiance of it. Lords and ladies of the aristocracy, like the Duke of Ashcroft, do not faze them. But she has a secret that someone has found out about and is blackmailing her, and she becomes a threat to the League, after managing to infiltrate Julian's home and managing to appear to have made off with information from his Chronology of the League. They find out that Delaney has a talent too; a supernatural library of a mind she calls the Attic - where whatever she reads/sees in a blink of an eye, she can remember and find at will - though time in her attic, and time and reality do not always correlate.

Ashcroft realizes that to protect the League, he also has to protect Delaney. Even though he has other plans for the future of his dukedom, he cannot fight his attraction to her, and she likewise is attracted to him, despite his dukedom. Their affair becomes quite heated - literally!

As always, I enjoyed the mash-up of the supernatural and the historical romance, set in the Victorian era. Despite this, Delaney comes across as a very modern woman, but maybe that is to emphasize her differentness from typical Society misses, as an American who does not understand or appreciate British societal boundaries and aristocracy. I enjoyed the tension between the hero/heroine, and the eventual succumbing to their mutual attraction. I also enjoyed the storyline of the League moving along, including the development of Simon and the introduction of Emma, the hero/heroine of the next story. Also the element of concern for the future generations, with the introduction of Lucien, the child of Julian and Piper, who shows some element of supernatural talent as well. The writing was very engaging, including the sense of familial protectiveness amongst the members of the League and the sense of brotherhood that Ashcroft has with the other male members. I quite liked this, as the Duke seemed a very lonely, and solitary character in preceding novels. It was a poignant contrast to his own blood family, with the abuse and rejection alluded to - Sebastian was also a third son, but no real mention was made of his relationship with his actual brothers. One has to assume there was none.

Definitely an enjoyable addition in the series.

4 stars out of 5 for me.

This is the third book in the League of Lords series about aristocrats (mostly aristocrats) with paranormal abilities in the Victorian era. I haven’t read the previous two, but it was reasonably easy to pick up the general context and rules of the world, and the characters who had obviously featured in previous books were given a light introduction so we had their backstory. I think it stands fairly well alone.

The Duke of the title is Ashcroft, Sebastian as we know him for much of the book, who has certain abilities with fire - and a problem of control. Despite his issues, he knows he needs to marry, and preferably another member of the League, so selects a suitable young lady. Meeting brash American Delaney Temple upends all his plans, however, since he is stung by a bee at their first meeting and she promptly saves his life - with mouth to mouth resuscitation, causing a massive scandal.

There’s a curious subplot here where Delaney is being blackmailed for… I’m still not precisely sure what. Information, I assume, since that is her talent; she has a mental ‘attic’ where she stores inconceivable amounts of information she can then access at her leisure, and she has memorized the League’s codex of information on paranormal abilities - which is why they can’t let her go. The thing that’s a bit odd is that the blackmail plot is never really followed up, though it seems it may be in the subsequent book.

Delaney and Sebastian as a couple are fabulous, striking literal sparks as two strong personalities clash. I definitely bought into the romance between them (and enjoyed the bedroom scenes which are quite steamy) but at times it did seem to come at the expense of actually explaining overly complicated plot devices. Delaney, for example, is asked to help decipher some codes for the League - but we’re never told what the codes are all about or why they need deciphering. They’re a throwaway device to show that she can be useful to them, which was ridiculous because her abilities made her usefulness obvious.

I kind of like this idea of a team of Victorian-era superheroes, but I’m just not sure where the author is going with it, because there doesn’t seem to be any sort of overarching mission or adversary for them. I’ll give it four stars, because I did like the romance part very much and I like the concept, but some of the plot falls a bit short for my tastes.

A fun, cute slow burn with a bit of magical action/adventure thrown in.

[What I liked:]

•The prologue reminds me of Frozen—a young child is blessed (cursed?) with a supernatural gift, who is cowed into hiding it. This inspired empathy in me for Sebastian early on, and made me want to follow his journey to finding self-acceptance.

•The prose is decent: easy to follow, a good balance of description and dialogue, with nice touches of wit & humor.

•I enjoyed the descriptions of how the supernatural powers work, what the limitations & weaknesses are, etc.

•The chemistry was good, once the romance storyline got going. I bought the main couple’s attraction, the development of their growing affection, their personality clashes that were consistent with the MC’s characterizations, & I enjoyed their battle of wills.

•The romance storyline was very emotionally satisfying, I think largely due to good pacing of it.

•I really like the series’s premise of a chosen family of supernaturally gifted misfits! I want to read more of the series to learn more about the other characters.

[What I didn’t like as much:]

•There are lots of sentences (dangling dependent clauses) with no verbs. This is a stylistic choice I can appreciate, but it sometimes got confusing in this book. I’d lose track of what was being narrated.

•Some sentences are very long, with multiple embedded clauses. Again, this is not necessarily a bad stylistic choose, but sometimes I would lose track of what was happening because the sentences were so long.

•Sometimes there was overuse of commas when a semi-colon or just starting a new sentence would have helped with clarity (see above).

•There was insta-lust between the two MC’s. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but in this case it made it hard for me to suspend my disbelief. It felt contrived specifically because it was emphasized that neither MC had felt any spark of physical attraction, whatsoever, in years—and all of a sudden, both of them are instantly, overwhelmingly attracted to each other. What are the odds, eh?

•There is good emotional depth, but much of the dialogue was a bit cheesy/more poetic than how people converse in real life.

•The main danger introduced in the plot was suddenly assumed to no longer be dangerous halfway through the story, based on little evidence. That plot line was just dropped from any mention until the epilogue (which is only mentioned there to set up the next book). That sudden collapse of danger deflated a good bit of narrative tension. Although there was plenty of continuing drama & tension on the romantic front, the sudden fizzle of any external danger was clumsily handled. I might have given 4 stars to this book if not for this issue.

•While I liked the world building and info about the powers in the book, I would have liked some more! For example, why emotion caused Sebastian to lose control over his power.

If you like Victorian romances, enemies-to-lovers stories, or paranormal adventures this book may be your next read. Tracy Summer has managed to wrap all of this into her latest installments of her League of Lords series (which can be read alone but would probably more satisfying if you had read the others preceding this one).

Delaney is a smart, competitive, and very talented woman who is bursting with attitude and life. Sebastian has closed himself off except for a chosen few because he is terrified he will kill them with ability to produce fire. Different in temperament, they are also on opposite sides. She is being blackmailed to steal something that he needs to keep his talent under control.

I really like their relationship; they complement each other very well. My favorite parts were when they spend quiet moments together discovering things about each other: his violin playing and her love of history. Of course there are many obstacles in the way of being together. The largest is his fear that he will kill her with his power. I think the author handled that well and didn’t have Delaney be able to just push aside his fears.

However, it seems to me the big threat of the person blackmailing Delaney sort of peters out. Suddenly they act like that person isn’t a threat anymore. Their level of alertness should decline slowly as time goes by and nothing happens. It very abrupt and then the group is on to the next obstacle about what is keeping Delaney and Sebastian apart.

Overall, though, a nice romance, drama to keep the plot moving forward and a storyline that continues into the next book that makes you want to grab the next one when it comes out.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC in return for an honest opinion.

Heated Love!
Delaney is just right for him! She's an American who is running from a secret which she and her twin are desperate to keep. Besides this, she has an unique ability which can help the League unravel their mysteries.
He is Sebastian, the Duke who founded the League, a safe haven for those with abilities they need to conceal. He is a Fire Starter, a Duke with fire in his fingertips who struggles to contain his ability.
This story is a well written fantasy romance in which you get to meet and know some of the other members of the League but it is mainly about Sebastian and Delaney's very 'heated' romance.
Each and every character is well constructed, so much so that I was able to get a clear picture of each one.
A beautifully told story that will appeal to those who enjoy fantasy mixed in with a whole bunch of sweet love.
I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of the book and my voluntary review is based on my own thoughts while reading this story.

The plot and world of this book are great and very creative and the characters all have their own distinctive voices and you really find yourself caring for them as they are. I will admit I'm a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope, but this is a prime example of it being done well. As the third in the series, I think it is the perfect addition to follow the first two books and will satisfy the Bridgerton itch we all know too well as of late. This book is an easy read that lets the mind relax and unwind.

A beautifully written paranormal.
What an awesome story Sebastian and Delaney were so cool! I enjoyed this fantasy romance a great deal. Reading about the talents that the league has was great. I loved the setup at the end for Simon can’t wait to read his story! The book is beautifully written with great dialogue between all the characters. THE DUKE IS WICKED is the third book in the League of Lords series and finally, our Fireball gets his story.

Bless him, he has done so much for his friends, regardless of his own reputation with the Ton. He has an unspoken arrangement with Lady Nuisance but fate has a way of walking all over what practicality may decide is the right thing to do. In this instance, he is besotted with one half of Trouble Two, and Lady Nuisance is besotted with the other. Sounds easy then, right? Wrong!

Ye gods, this man is stubborn! So determined to do the right thing, even to his own detriment. I love him for it, I really do, but I also want to slap him upside the head! Delaney is the perfect match for him because she doesn't care about his title and will go toe-to-toe with him, instead of backing down and deferring to him simply because he has a title.

The only downside for me in here was the story about the blackmailer that just sort of fizzled out. I'm sure I will read more about it as there are hints in here for Simon's story, which sounds like it will be a cracker, but it just felt sort of unfinished.

Plenty in here to keep my attention and the pages turning. A wonderful addition to the series and absolutely recommended by me.

The Duke is Wicked by Tracy Sumner
League of Lords #3

Deliciously delightfully wonderful in a rather decadent way – thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the series and finding out how Sebastian and Delaney found happiness together.

What I liked:
* Sebastian: third son, soldier, duke by default, misunderstood by his family, abused by his father, wounded in body and soul, trust issues, rather intriguing, tries to live up to expectations
* Delaney: American, twin, eidetic memory or perhaps even more than that, hoyden, true to herself, protective, horsewoman, knows what she wants and not willing to take less than she deserves
* Getting to see the group that form the league and find out how they are doing
* Learning more about Simon and Emma – read their book before this one
* That Delaney’s brother found his HEA in this book, too
* Wondering if Humphrey will have a book of his own
* That I could relate to the characters, cared about them, and hoped that they would eventually find happiness in a place they create that will be safe for those with special abilities
* Being able to see Sebastian and Delaney together – they were perfect for one another
* The nicknames the couple came up for one another
* The steamy bits
* Thinking about who else might show up to be included in the League of Lords series and…will the next generation or contemporaries of us have books of their own?
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Sebastian’s father…not worthy of Sebastian
* Thinking about the damage misunderstanding and abuse can cause in those verbally and physically abused
* Having to wait for more in this series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the the ARC – this is my honest review.

Sebastian, The Duke of Ashcroft is determined to keep the League of Lords under wraps. After all, the group's supernatural gifts brought the mystical misfits together and nobody is going to tear them apart. Intelligent and wily, Sebastian knows better than to trust anyone--especially an impulsive and intrusive American woman. Competitive and confident, Delaney Temple is hellbent on uncovering the truth about the League. She'll stop at nothing to unearth the secrets they're burying. But when Sebastian is in trouble and Delaney comes to his rescue, their contempt turns to a burning desire. Suddenly, with their passion ignited, they can no longer deny their attraction.
This is the third book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own I’d recommend reading in order to fully appreciate it. I loved both Sebastian & Delaney, their chemistry sizzled & I adored the slow burn romance. I found the book to be well written & flowed well but I was a bit disappointed with the mystery surrounding the blackmailer, which seemed to go in fits & starts. I do enjoy the author’s books which have a different & refeshing take on them with the inclusion of a dash of paranormal. An engaging & entertaining read, I look forward to more in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I knew this was the 3rd book, but it wasn't a great stand-alone effort. There was so much half-baked detail that clearly came from previous books that I was irritated most of the book. I really wanted a better explanation of Delaney and how her story really connected to the League. It felt like the author jumped over scenes without finishing them, leaving the reader wondering what happened.

I was provided with an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, I love this series! Full of magic, twists and turns, and steamy love affairs there isn’t much else you could ask for!

While I don’t love how bossy and temperamental the boys get at times, I do love a happy ending! I can’t wait to keep reading!

While I received a free copy as an ARC from the author, all opinions are my own.

Spectacular! Delaney and Sebastian are not destined to be together yet they are!

In a world where the odds are against them they come together as one.

In this mystical Victorian era romance anything is possible.

Tracy Summer has written another winner.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is disappointing compare with the earlier two books - mainly because it is so concentrated on the romance element between the two that we have a lot of things left unexplained.

How did Emma find Delaney and know her secrets - both the secret of her magical ability and the secret buried in a field somewhere? How does Emma manage to get physical notes to her if she is insubstantial? Why does everyone, bar Simon, immediately disregard that Emma has been trying to communicate, once they decide she is not a physical threat?

Yes, I know we may find out some of the answers in the next book - but it did leave this one feeling very unfinished.

Also if you are going to write about people with British titles then surely it would be sensible to check the correct form of address - someone whose name is Sir Richard Kendrick would NEVER be addressed, or referred to, as Sir Kendrick. He would always be either 'Sir Richard Kendrick' or 'Sir Richard'. And billiard balls do not have numbers - those are pool balls. Members of the British aristocracy did not play pool.

I have re-read as I am still considering whether to read the next volume to actually find out if we do get answers to some of the Emma questions!

I did not know this was the third in a series when I got it to read. It was an enjoyable, well told story which left me needing to go back and read books one and two and then get book four when it comes out. Sebastian may be your typical tortured gorgeous male main character but he is different enough to keep your interest. Delaney could also fall into the innocent female lead, not afraid to take what she wants, but she still has quirks enough to make her someone I would like to know. They shared some serious steaminess in their romance and the League make for a well round out cast with their own stories you will want to read.
