I bought and read book 1, and wrote a review just for it. This review is mainly for books 2 & 3. In book 1 Cate learns of her inheritance and moves to Scotland to assume ownership of a well preserved and occupied 300+ year old caste. She also learns the secret to a large gold watch. In books 2 & 3 Cate travels back in time to investigate a mystery with her Scottish ancestors. Book 2 takes her to 1857 to find out why her ancestor confessed to a murder Cate does not believe her committed. Book 3 takes her to 1925 to investigate the theft of two very valuable gemstone necklaces, one ruby and one sapphire. These have special meaning for Cate because she was loaned the sapphire necklace to wear to a ball in 1857. Cate is an excellent investigator. Her background as a history professor makes historical research something she has a great deal of experience with. And she is like a dog with a bone, not giving up till it is done. The mysteries were fascinating. But what I liked most about these books were the characters. While Cate is now a Countess, she is down to earth. She treats staff like family and pitches in to help whenever her staff will allow her to do so. They insist on treating her like the very wealthy Countess she has become. It is clear the love her and she loves them. Her staff member, Jack Reid's family has been in service to the Mackenzie family since the castle was built in the 1700's. Now Jack is Cate's companion and protector during her time traveling investigations. I am enjoying this series very much and cannot wait to start the next book.
