After barely escaping Alistair’s clutches, Clover struggles to unleash and master her dormant powers as she embraces her merrow lineage while still staying true to her human self. With the Seelie and Unseelie armies on the verge of war, the clock is ticking, but when a centuries-old secret is uncovered, alliances and loyalties are put to the test and both her worlds come crashing down around her.
To defend against Alistair, protect the fate of the Fae, and safeguard her loved ones, Clover must soar higher than she’d ever thought possible.
In this action-packed sequel, the very loss and heartache that could lead to Clover’s ruin could also lead to her redemption. The choice is hers.
Nicole Kilpatrick is the award-winning author of the YA fantasy novels, Clover and Fae's Ascent. When not writing, she can be found lounging in a cabin by a river, curled up at home reading a book, or concocting recipes in her cozy kitchen in Brooklyn, where she lives with her husband.
I wasn't really into this one. There were just too many convenient moments and awkward, out of character moments, like the scene where Clover randomly decides she wants to mount Finn. Where the hell did that come from? It was just really forced and odd.
There are a few times where significant stuff is happening in the background, and we do not get any eye into that. It just kind of seemed like cheating a bit. You have your characters go off on a merry adventure and then come back afterwards and mini-infodump the shenanigans and that's it?
This one also reinforced what a child Clover is. She acts young even for an 18-year-old and the fact that Finn is her boyfriend, has been watching her since she was a baby, and is hundreds of years old is just extra creepy because of this, never mind completely unrealistic. There were so many times that Clover acted like a petulant brat, and Finn was just like oh dang I messed up good this time. No dude, you didn't. That was a gross overreaction on the part of a pissy 12-year-old.
i didnt like this as much as the first one but still worth the listen. The story isnt over yet, lots of action and the world building is good. I just dont really enjoy the fmc as much as i think i should. Though she is 18 she seems more like 15/16 with no experience in lifes trials.
Finn is an enjoyable character but i dont buy into the relationship enough between him and clover. I do like the best friend and the cougar and id like to hear more about their relationship.
gifted audio in exchange for an honest review. 3 stars
I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this sequel. Ok, it hasn’t been that long but I can’t help it. I absolutely love these characters and the world in which they reside!
In the sequel to her debut novel, Clover, Author Nicole Kilpatrick rewards her readers once again with Fae’s Ascent, in which our main character the plucky Clover struggles to free and then master her powers as she learns to balance and accept both aspects of herself: the human and the uh, not so human side. The battle continues between the Seelie and Unseelie armies and with time running out she has to make a choice With the Seelie and Unseelie armies on the verge of war, the clock is ticking, and Clover has a very difficult choice to make.
I just love the clean, YA vibe of these books and don’t get me started on the Irish lore. I have long been waiting for a contemporary book like this that celebrates Irish history, legend and lore and has so much fun with it!
In the much anticipated sequel to her debut novel, Clover, Nicole Kilpatrick does not disappoint with Fae’s Ascent. Our spunky heroine and her motley crew of friends and family (both human and fae) are back for more adventure, love and of course a pinch of luck.
Readers will be delighted to soar above the Emerald Isle and dive under the sea along with Clover as she discovers the source of her special abilities and meets the family she never knew she had.
Ms. Kilpatrick’s development of Clover’s character from a feisty, impulsive teenager into a courageous and self-assured young woman is to be applauded. She has once again woven a whimsical story that leaves audience hoping that sometimes “fae-ry” tales do come true.
I liked Clover, and I loved Fae's Ascent... This sequel did not disappoint at all...
The book starts at the point Clover ended, and is action packed throughout... The reader gets more than just Clover in this book... Many other characters' stories add so much more to the adventure... and there are some amazingly unexpected twists...
The narrator continues to bring the story to vibrant life...
FAE’S ASCENT by Nicole Kilpatrick is an exciting and jam-packed sequel to CLOVER. The book picks up after the Seelies have temporarily defeated Alistair. To prepare for his next move, Clover is encouraged by Queen Helena and her family to train and develop her magic, which leads to daily lessons with her mother. Clover struggles to advance at a consistent pace, and then on top of that, Finn has to leave on a recruiting mission for their military, placing new stress on their relationship. Before Clover knows it, her whole world looks different. Those who have been friends become enemies and those who have been enemies become friends. Unable to predict what will be next, Clover must learn to trust and rely on herself.
I absolutely love this book as it’s exactly what I want from a sequel: it puts us even more firmly inside the world that’s been created, it deepens our love for existing characters, and it introduces us to new ones. For instance, we get to spend a bit more time with Kean, who becomes more than just another dating option for Clover. Without giving too much away, it’s further established how much of a catch and good guy he is, and I really enjoy his storyline. On the other hand, I also had fun getting to meet all of Clover’s merrow family and exploring the world beneath the waves. Kilpatrick does a phenomenal job at balancing the old with the new and incorporating them both seamlessly.
The plot twists in this book are totally unexpected! Other than further conflict with Alistair, I honestly could not have guessed at what would come next after the ending in CLOVER. Kilpatrick not only exceeded my expectations but added real momentum and scope to the story. Then, getting to witness how all the characters react and respond to the events that happen helped deepen my connection to them and made me care about them even more.
Overall, FAE’S ASCENT improves upon book one in the series in all the best ways. Anyone who loves stories set in the Seelie court, Celtic folklore, and a good love triangle should add this series to their TBR.
Due to an act of betrayal and the fact that Alistair still wants Clover, the Unseelie & Seelie Courts are dangerously close to an all-out war. An elaborate plan and an age-old secret may rock the very foundation of this world. What part will Clover play in 'saving the world' and will she be up to the task?
Can writing be called fresh-faced cause that is how I feel about Kilpatrick's? The narrative grabs your attention and is inviting, and especially with Clover's POV makes you feel you're going along for the ride. The multiple POVs give you a well-rounded aspect of the story. The musings are well presented, different and distinct for each character. Some of the switches between them might be a little abrupt, then the storytelling finds its groove. These frequent switches actually make you feel like you're in a movie.
The mythology and magic system are well thought out and explained nicely. I like how Clover's powers evolve and are portrayed, how all the magic is portrayed. The action scenes are properly exhilarating.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Alistair is a great villain, calculating every move and treacherous.
Something that bothered me was that some characters were given more time in the forefront than needed, their POVs often quite wordy while in my opinion more interesting characters didn't get the exposure they deserved. Also these POVs sometimes interfered with the otherwise great flow of the story.
Getting back to the good which there is a lot of like the so many smile and chuckle-worthy moments. Awesome, realistic and powerful in the feelings department dialogue. I adore the love and respect, even cuteness of many of the relationships, especially Momma Ruths's with Clover.
All the numerous threads lead to an exciting final battle and unexpected conflicts that have you cheering. A finale that is both touching and thrilling and will have you smiling ear to ear.
Overall: 5 out of 5 Story: 5 out of 5 Narration: 5 out of 5
Overall: A great story, really brought to life by Alling’s narration.
Story: I liked this story better than book one, and didn’t want to stop listening once I started. I love the mix of adventure, love, and friendship in this. Seeing Clover evolve into a strong young woman from the somewhat rebellious at times teen has been wonderful. Her journey to find balance and learning to use and control her powers was absolutely captivating. And who can forget the amazing characters that surround her! The perfect follow-up to book one!
Narration: Listening to this story is like watching it unfold in front of you. Alling does a great job of conveying the mood and vibe of the story, and making it easy to differentiate between characters. An excellent performance, I’d absolutely listen to more books narrated by Alling in the furture!
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Nicole Kilpatrick. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
Big thanks to Netgalley, Nicole Kilpatrick and Melange, Fire and Ice Young Adult Books for the eARC in exchange for a review. This is the second installment in the series following Clover. She's a half fae, half human in the fae realm who meets her Mer family and gets stuck in the fae realm when the wanna be Unseelie King takes over and closes the portal between realms.
This was the second in the series, but could very easily be read as a stand alone. There are some relationships that maybe wouldn't have as much depth but you probably would understand the story well enough. This was very much a YA. There was kissing and blushing and that was about it for romance. Clover is 18 and, yeah, very much 18. The whole story wraps up without a lot of dramatics. The main characters seem to be separated and the real hero of the story only recounts his telling after the fact and how he
I'm rounding up to 4 stars, but probably more like 3.5. It was ok.
I really enjoyed Clover so I was thrilled to get sent a copy of the sequel.
Being the holiday season, it unfortunately took me awhile to find the time to sit down and read this, but I'm so glad I finally got the chance; because I really enjoyed it.
I just adore these characters and this world and the lore is so compelling to me. It's really the type of book you can get lost in since it's such a captivating read that it's hard to put down.
Overall, it was a great follow-up that exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it.
I received a digital ARC via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
" ' To what we've lost and what we've gained, to things long gone and still remain. To new adventures and to new beginnings!'... 'Long live the Queen!' "
" 'I can't do this...' 'Why?' 'Because I am in love with you and if there's someone else..." Clover cupped his beautiful face in her hands, 'It's always ever been you.'"

Fae's Ascent was a good continuation of the first book, Clover, where a young girl is thrust into an evil leprechaun's scheme and brought to the (hidden) faerie world where she falls in love and finds out more about herself as well as getting to know the family she never knew. The second book gives more continued storyline, romance, adventure, war, and magic. It also has twists and explores more of Clover's powers.
I recommend this one for fantasy lovers and YA enthusiasts. A fun read!
Awesome book! Let me begin by saying that YA books were not my first choice of read but after reading Clover & Fae’s Ascent, I can honestly say I’m officially hooked and I’m looking forward to reading others. For folks that feel the same way I did, give this a chance! You will not regret it.
This book deserves nothing less than a 5 rating particularly because it’s well written, keeps you wanting more and you actually believe you are in this faerie world not to mention it’s witty and just a fun read.
The twist and unexpected turns will leave breathless and in awe and the well developed characters win you over. It’s exhilarating and enchanting.
I highly recommend this book if you enjoy being taken on a wild ride! Kudos to you Nicole!
This is the sequel to Kilpatrick's wonderful book Clover. It continues the story of Clover as she adjusts to life in the Faerie world as half-Fae and learns her powers. There are more characters in this story, more settings like the underwater world of the merrows, and an intricate weaving of plots. It's sexy without being too much, which I think makes it perfect for actual teens to read. I actually enjoyed this second book even more than the first one. If you're a fan of Brigid Kemmerer books like A Curse so Dark and Lonely, you'll enjoy this book. It has a similar feel to it. Kilpatrick is a talented writer, and I'm excited to see where her career goes from here.
