Facing their families is turning out to be the trio’s toughest test.
Life should be grand for Henry, Alice, and Jay. They’ve defeated the doubts that kept them apart and embraced a relationship that suits all three of them.
But the arrival of Alice’s sister threatens to upend their cozy routine. Skepticism and accusations erupt in a visit bristling with tension as the sisters tear open old wounds.
Even worse, Jay’s springing a new idea on his it’s time to come out to his family. His decision might destroy them all—but Henry’s hunger for Jay’s public embrace makes it almost worth the risk.
Henry, Alice, and Jay must redefine who they are to each other and what they want for their future—together or apart. Can they trust in their love enough to survive the consequences?
I am a former Midwestern gal who well knows the joy of flopping down in a field for an afternoon and composing stories about the shapes in the clouds. As it turns out, adulthood doesn't have to be so different from childhood.
Sharing those stories is a new thing for me. I hope readers will love the characters as much as I do.
I was very grateful to receive an ARC of the newest edition of the Neighbourly Affection Series. This is book 6 in the series, and while I guess you could read it as a stand alone. I HIGHLY recommend you read the series. Why wouldn’t you want to!!! This book continues right where book 5 left off. We are getting into the family aspects of the books. Essentially this book is about family, family dynamics, good and bad. It is packed full of emotion and explores the very real dynamics of family and acceptance. It starts with Alice’s sister staying with the trio and the journey they take(along with Jay and Henry) to an understanding about the relationship and dealing with the emotions it causes. Then we move onto Jay…I want a Jay!!! His family situation is very different from Alice. I feel Jay is very much at the forefront of this book. Of course we have lovely Alice and Swoon worthy.. Mr. Darcy esque Henry, but OMG Jay!!! He grows so much as a character in this book. I also loved meeting Henry’s mother!!! This book is very wordy(in a good way) . It is not a quick beach read, instead I felt like I was gliding along through the pages as the story progressed. It slowly builds to the next layer and then the next layer, until we get to the ending. It is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it!!! I cannot wait for more!!!
“I am a man entire, not a caricature with a whip in hand.”
The reason I love this series is the character development. From the first book, each character is distinct. Although this one is slightly different because the POV shifts from Alice to Henry to Jay. And because I’m used to hearing only Alice’s voice, hearing from the two guys was jarring. This wasn’t the fault of the author, I want to make clear. In fact, the shifting perspective was very well done.
The last book that came out, Tuesdays With Jay, I read along with all the books again. Because it was another concurrent POV. But this was SO much Henry and Jay. It was about halfway through before I really got on board. And being inside those characters was intense.
“But blame walked a road to the past; understanding paved the way to the future”
We also get to see their perspectives on things that happened in the past. The reminiscing might account for the book’s length. I wanted to put the book down so it wouldn’t end, so I was totally okay with the length.
There is more of a focus on dominance in this one. Henry is called master more. This was softened somewhat with the particulars, if not the actions, in previous books.
I learned a new word: proprioception!
“I am always seducing you, in every language I have at my command.”
Shiver! The sex was toned down. Minding their manners was focused more on emotions and relationship dynamics. Did I miss that? Not until the end.
Now for the plot… Jay, Jay, Jay. It was like watching a train wreck when you prepared for homecoming. With popcorn. And a cozy blanket. Maybe s’mores. But then the bitch whore from hell shows up. She’s every horrible person you’ve ever known. Times twenty. On steroids. And plus also? She kicks puppies with “casual cruelty,” whilst laughing.
“Crack.”
Was. Not. Enough. Not kidding. This was where I expected the break. There were points when I was so utterly disappointed in Jay I wanted to cry. But I didn’t. I powered through and had faith. It hurt a lot and made me want to slap someone. Okay, that monstrous bitch. I wanted to slap her, and the parents, whilst laughing. Because children shouldn’t be treated so…
I get what the author wanted for her characters. A someday when maybe somehow it might work with the shortsighted. But does the world have to accept what you do / are / love for it to be enough? No. Decidedly no. Should it? Again, no. The lesson here is you are always enough.
Five stars because it was Alice, Henry, and Jay. I wish it had been less pain, and more backhanding. But perhaps the next book, and Jay eventually was the man Henry thought him to be. Of course. But this reader doesn’t have the patience Henry does!
Honest review for an advance copy. My thanks to the author. Read it now! I’m going to read it again. Read the others first so you know the characters. Can’t wait for the next one…please, please write fast! ;)
First off I have to say this is the first book I have wanted to read but also didn’t want to read at the same time. Alice meets up with her sister after years of not being together. They have a rough start as Olivia doesn't understand their dynamic. Making fun and being downright rude, she eventually see what they're all about. Later on she finally figures it out giving her sister her blessing on the relationship. I got to the chapter that said Kress farm and I actually put the book down lol. Getting brave I started to read knowing Jay was going to get crapped on but it was so much worse than I thought. The fact he brought it all on himself is not good. Henry and Alice are thrown out of Jay's parent's house when his sister finds out that he is with both of them. The feelings are overwhelming as they watch in dismay as their Jay becomes lost to them. Jay is overwhelmed with being home. His plans to tell his family keep getting interrupted by his sister's domineering his time, then his mother's illness. He finds that he does have people other than Henry and Alice in his corner. His sister for sure has always been, but his brothers' support was something he never expected. When he became the man he wanted to be at the end was friggin amazing. Brilliantly written. Loved every word.

ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Blurb: Facing their families is turning out to be the trio’s toughest test. Life should be grand for Henry, Alice, and Jay. Henry, Alice, and Jay must redefine who they are to each other and what they want for their future—together or apart. Can they trust in their love enough to survive the consequences? Review, spoilers!!!: Soooo many feelings after reading this book! Alice`s sister Olivia comes to visit and she gets schooled on the relationship of her sister with her men, which she doesn`t understand. “So you see Jay on his knees, and you think Henry`s a tyrannical jackass making him do something demeaning that he doesn`t want to do.” The Flush in Ollie`s cheeks proved her guess right. “I look, and I see hours of conversation and negotiation encapsulated in this ritual that brings them both peace.” All hell breaks loose when Jay takes Henry and Alice to the Kress Farm. Finally Jay get`s to confront a bully, he didn`t even know was bullying him. What I liked: OMG what not. Henry is his eloquent self, Jay is his cute self and Alice…. Yes! What growth of characters…. Especially Jay! I couldn`t be prouder! I read it twice and still… I seem to read new things, The first time I read this book it was like BAM. The second time I savoured it more. I need more Henry, Jay and Alice, but especially more Henry. What I didn`t like: I could smack the little brat Olivia sometimes. But she redeemed herself. That Peggy, Nat should have hit her more when she was little.

I got an advanced copy with an agreement to review. I asked to be an advanced reader due to my love of the series. So now you know how and why I got here, I was not starting from zero. Neither should you, honestly. I highly suggest you start at the beginning. In case you are one of those that likes to look at later reviews to see if the book is worth your time, let us take a quick look back, as spoiler free as I can get and still talk about what happened.
So all of those words are not even a review of this book yet, but it's a fairly heavy series so far. Midlength in size by words, but heavy in content. There is a lot to deal with, and some of it is very sad, a bit somewhat horrifying. But if you are here because you are following the series and just want to see if this next one is worth it, this is the part that is important to you. So we begin the promised Ollie visit. If you are like me, you are probably expecting this to be the main part of the book. It is not, there is more to what is going to be experienced in this book than catching Ollie up to where her sister is in her life's journey, and Alice, Jay, and Henry figuring out what it means for them to make room for Ollie to know fully about their relationship. Her reactions ultimately set up Jay for high expectations for where he wants to be in the relationship, what he wants to have and offer, and sets up the emotional journey for the rest of this book. It is beautifully done, and the events set off here ultimately help each person in this relationship learn more about themselves and where they are in their own journey. So my answer to the question "should I read this one" is yes. The quality is still there. The emotional journey is exquisite. The ending is very satisfactory. Overall a big old YES for me.
I have read and loved this series and shamefully begged for this ARC.
“Minding Their Manners” is the long awaited continuation – not a sequel - of the story that started back in 2014 with “Playing the Game”. See Goodreads reviewer Krysteena for a good spoiler-free summary of the books in this series, which you actually need to read to get here.
This series in whole is BDSM Erotica MMF. The BDSM is more D/s that S/M. We have an old soul “smoldering artist” Dominant/Master in Henry whose job is to set up the games and make sure everyone has fun. Then there is joyful service submissive bottom in Jay aka “flirty bike-boy”, who is Henry’s longtime partner. Finally there is Alice, the main protagonist for the previous main (not prequel or additional) books, she is a mechanical engineer who moved into the apartment across the hall from Henry and Jay. She is brought into their life as a hoped for and loved third to the triad, her kink status develops over the series.
MTM is told in the POV of all three main characters. While the general theme of the book is family dynamics, it really spotlights on Jay and the culmination of growth that has been shown from the past 5 years (timeline in the books from when he first meets Henry to the current time). All the struggles he has faced and has slowly overcome in the previous books are really shown here in such layered ways. The solid confidence in Henry and Alice’s love has only given him a foundation on which he has personally grown through leaps and bounds. He has cultivated and developed his own relationships with submissives he has met from the club, and draws from them new understandings of himself as he navigates into uncharted territory – accepting that it’s ok to be submissive and in love with a man as well as a woman.
Fans of Jay have been rooting for him, and this is where we get our payoff! (Light plot spoilers ahead) MTM opens up literally days after the previous book “Finding Their Balance” when Alice’s little sister Oliva stays over at their home while attending a conference in Boston. While the beginning of the visit was rocky, Alice and Olivia were able to clear up some misunderstandings and come to some new revelations on who they are and how they have perceived each other over the years. The visit ends with Olivia treating Henry and Jay as brothers and family.
This visit, as well as conversations with other submissive men outside the home has given Jay the confidence to finally come out to his family in not just his sexuality, but his relationship and kink status. While Henry and Alice harbor no illusions on how such a revelation will be received by his overbearing sister Peggy, Jay has convinced himself that it will go just as the visit with Alice’s sister went. He anticipates some loud conversation and fighting to begin, with explanations and answers followed by acceptance into the family. Jay is so sure that this is going to happen that he decides to call up his mother and tell her that he’s bringing “Two very special people” to the family Labor Day gathering.
MTM is a big book, and covers a lot of ground, as well as set up new possible storylines for future (hint, hint). While Jay’s arc is a big one, that is by no means the entirety of this book.
If you haven’t read the series yet, and are questioning if you should, consider reading the mid-series novella “Three Way Tie” for an introduction instead of reading the reviews. I will say that if you are looking for a dark BDSM read, or one with the typical Alpha Dom’s who are some kind of military/spy/special ops during the day and expert whip holders at night, or the Billionaires who get their virgins, that isn't this series. However, if you like cerebral kink without stressing over gender norms and expectations, and want to be left feeling good about what you have spent your time and money on, not just an empty calorie book, please continue reading this series and beg for more.
I was honored and excited to see that I had been given an advanced copy of the novel for an honest review. And whew, was it a ride.
I have come to expect an emotional rollercoaster from the Neighbourly Affection series (in a fantastic way) but this one took the cake. The growth that Alice has made in the past few books is truly present in this novel. Her interactions with her sister are close to home, and made me feel like I was reliving some of the conversations I've had to have explaining the intricacies of the scene to family members who think it's all mean faces and pain.
No spoilers, but I have never wanted to punch a character in the face more than I have in this novel. M.Q was top of her game with the reactions and the manipulation that was displayed. It made my blood boil and switch back and forth between wanting to hug Jay for the years of mental abuse he's suffered or give him a good shake to wake up and smell the bullshit. The parallels were nailed, having seen the cycle of emotional abuse you make excuses for the ones you love until it tips over.
Thank you for releasing this novel, and I'm already excited to see what comes next!
Minding Their Manners was probably my most anticipated read of the year, and boy it did not disappoint. I discovered this author last year and devoured the previous books in this series. I highly recommend reading the series before starting this one as there is a lot of character development and growth that pay off in this installment.
Henry, Alice, and Jay are such beautiful, well-developed characters that they feel like old friends. I love watching their relationship grow and strengthen through happy moments and emotional struggles. The love and commitment that these three share is what dreams are made of and now that I have finished this book, I want to go back to the beginning of the series and read it all over again.
One of the reasons this book and the rest of the series are some of my favorites is the author's elegant writing style and ability to change the voice during each character's point of view from chapter to chapter. Even though the entire novel is in third person, there is a definitive style change from Henry's formal thoughts to Alice's logic to Jay's innocence and enthusiasm. I loved being able to see from Henry's perspective, as you are able to grasp the depth of responsibility that he feels for his submissives and how his love for them drives every tiny detail of his decision-making. I also think being able to see how Jay's thought processes revert to his childhood when dealing with his family (looking at you, Peggy) and how he falls back on old patterns of behavior help explain some issues he deals with in the later sections of the story.
All in all, this was definitely an excellent addition to the series and is not to be missed. I am not normally a reviewer, but I signed up for an ARC just to get this one in my hands a few weeks early and I regret nothing! I love this author, I love this series and I especially love this trio. I am looking forward to more stories and until that happens, I'll be revisiting the rest of the series and practicing patience like Jay ;)
First of all, this book is a beast. It is much longer and more intense than I ever expected. And for good reason, there is a lot of baggage for these characters to unpack. The predominant themes here are love, and family. And how those things can go so right, and so very wrong.
I always expect these books, this series to be emotional, but this one is a heavy hitter. There are just so many varied relationship dynamics...it is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for the reader. I absolutely loved getting to know all these people that we'd only heard of in periphery, due to their relations with the main triad. Alice's sister, in particular, is one I hope we hear more from in future books. And I am forever hoping that Will can snag a turn to tell us his story.
As always in this series, there are serious divisions and contemplation on the balancing of home and partnership within a not-exactly-average relationship. And I have to say, I am continually amazed--and gratified--by the realistic portrayal of both the realities and psychology of a d/s relationship. Same goes from a poly perspective. Major points earned, every time.
This is assuredly not a stand-alone title. I want to say that you will likely have enough info, if you chose to jump into the series with this book. But I would absolutely not recommend doing so. Long time readers will understand the true depth of growth that these characters have, and are, experiencing. And for folks invested in this series, of which I am clearly one, it is hard not to look at the relationship and emotional achievements of these characters with anything less than joy. Trying to skirt that line, without delving into spoilers? I will say this resolve and resolution was a long time coming.
How much do I love these books, these characters? I might be a tad biased, just sayin'.
[ARC received courtesy of the author, all opinions are my own.]
I finished this book hours ago and it’s still knocking around in my brain. Henry, Alice, and Jay deepen their commitment to each other while navigating the intricacies of dealing with their respective family members. Without spoiling anything, it’s a rollercoaster ride of family encounters combined with insights into each of the trio’s thoughts, emotional growth, increased trust, and deepening self-awareness and self-confidence - especially a certain favorite puppy in the tale.
This book is a must-read for fans of the series. As a devoted MQ Barber fan, I continue to be impressed with her rich characterization and her ability to move the story arc from chance encounter to flirtation to deep, deep love. Anyone who’s ever struggled to establish an evolved identity with family or friends will relate to the storyline. But if you’re new to Ms. Barber’s books, don’t start here, simply because the prior Neighborly Affection books’ context make this story much, much more meaningful.
Like the growth of Henry, Jay, and Alice themselves - individually and together - this book isn’t always easy. It contains emotional abuse from family members, which may be difficult for some. And it’s a long read. We see the same events from multiple perspectives, which I found slowed the pace of the story and was redundant at times. IMO, the tone of this book is appropriately far more introspective and heavy than the prior books in the series, and there are fewer sexy-times. But, it’s an accurate reflection of the self-doubts and challenges that arise in a relationship that becomes more serious and begins to move outside the lovers’ bubble of infatuation. Ultimately, Minding Their Manners moves the story forward and takes us through an important phase for our trio. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next and - gasp! - final book in the series.
Note: ARC received in exchange for an honest review.
I cannot tell you how very excited and anxious I was to read this book! And even as much as I had built it up in my mind, this book still exceeded all of my expectations… and believe me, my expectations were very high. I absolutely loved this book. And I absolutely love these characters. There is a sincerity and a vulnerability to M.Q. Barber’s writing—and her characters, in particular—that is just so overwhelmingly tender and beautiful. She invites you to get to know these characters in such a meaningful and intentional way that you just can’t help but fall in love with them. In this book, she delves even deeper into each character’s feelings, thoughts, and emotions than in previous books. The story itself is so honest and raw and real. Each of the three main characters has a role to play in their shared relationship, and each has their own insecurities about fulfilling that role. This is very much a story of growing pains. Every relationship goes through them. The question is always whether you will grow together or apart as a result. We see this play out on the page for these characters in heartbreaking and riveting detail. This book definitely had me in my feelings, like ALL of my feelings—everything from utter bliss to complete agony, and all that lies between. My heart broke for these characters, and my heart soared for them too. Love is not a painless process, but these characters prove that in going through the pain, you can emerge as something better, something stronger. This book takes you on a heartfelt and emotional journey, reminding us that love in all its forms is wondrous and beautiful… even in it’s misery.
* I was given an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review. All of my opinions are honest and entirely my own.
Minding Their Manners by M.Q. Barber is book 6 in the neighborly Affection Series. There are cross-overs to previous books and I recommend to read the ooks in order. MTM was highly, highly anticipated by little ole me, and I was so so not disappointed. MTM was worth the wait. I know I have an outstanding read on my hands, when I don't want the book to end before I even started reading it. Henry, Alice and Jay are facing the ultimate test for their relationship. Sorry not sorry, no spoilers here. Only so much- this book reminded me why I read. When the full length novel showed up on my reader I was giddy to start reading. And now, days later, I'm sitting here, speechless, empty, deeply in love with this outstanding characters and the author's excellent writing. Even the secondary characters are painting a colorful picture, giving glimpses in past and future of the three. And I loved, loved, loved every minute reading their story. I can't recommend enough this gem. This is hands down, my most favorite read of the year. I wish I had adequate words to describe my feelings the plottwists, twists and turns and Henry, Alice and Jay's story put me through, raw, gritty, heart-wrenching. Perfection, just perfection.
This is one of my top favorite series and I am so happy to have a new story about these characters that I love so much. In Minding Their Manners, Alice's sister Olivia comes for a visit, stirring up old hurts but paving the way for deeper understanding between the sisters of the home and happiness Alice has found with Henry and Jay. The same can not be said for Jay's inspiration to introduce to his large, judgmental family, the truth about his relationship with Henry and Alice. It's painful, maddening, and heartbreaking but ultimately freeing for Jay.
I love the author's writing style and the way she has given each character such a distinct personality: Henry, dominant and wise, with the formal speech and dress of another era, guiding his younger lovers to be all they can be; Jay, youthful and exuberant with an innocence and belief in people that makes him seem much younger than his years; and Alice, strong and fiercely protective, who has grown so much since book one and has found her perfect place in Henry and Jays lives. I will never tire of these characters and I hope there are more stories to come.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have been waiting for this book for what feels like a 100 years. Let me tell you now, it was well worth the wait. The author has a magical writing style that takes you out of reality and transports you straight into the world of Henry, Jay and Alice. And what a wonderful world it is.
I have relished getting to see the otherside of my 3 favourite characters. Their character development as individuals and as a throuple is so realistic and inspiring. The best part? Henry's. Internal. Dialogue.
I LOVED IT!
I need the next book like tomorrow, yesterday, last week. i cannot wait to dive straight back into this world and be comforted by my favourite characters for as long as possible.
Do yourself the biggest favour and purchase this series. Not only is the story brilliant but so many lessons our characters learn can be applied to real life. Most of all, this story encourages one to step outside their comfort zone and not be so afraid of vulnerability. The author has a true gift and we are fortunate enough for her to share it with us in such a brilliant way.
This is the long awaited book 6 for us Neighborly Affection fans. With every book I fall more and more in love with Henry and Jay, they are the perfect book boyfriends. Oh how I envy Alice!
This book delves more deeply into each character's family and allows us to see their interactions, both positive and negative, and how it has shaped them into the people they are today. I have to admit I was on tenterhooks waiting to find out how Jay's visit home was going to go. From the snippets we have had in previous books it was a case of "is this going to go as badly as I think it is?"
Fortunately all ended well but it certainly was an emotional and bonding journey - for Alice, Jay and Henry...as well as us readers.
As always I highly recommend this series, but I would suggest that you start with book 1, preferably when you have some time to spare because you may end up buying the following books and reading them back to back like I did in the beginning. :) Thank you M.Q. Barber for this wonderful series, I will happily continue to read this series for as long as you write it.
This was my most anticipated book of the year, and it did not disappoint! This installment of the series focused mostly on Jay’s development and his relationship with his family, but we also got to see this with both Alice and Henry’s family members, which only furthered my love of these characters. It added layers and so much more depth to these characters to see how they interacted with their families and presented their triad relationship to them. For the greatest emotional impact I strongly recommend reading the previous books in the series, so you have a deeper understanding and appreciation for where these three are in their relationship now.
All of the books are very well written and a pleasure to read from a language perspective. I am always happy after reading about these characters and gaining new insight on their personal and relationship development. If you can appreciate a more cerebral kink (Dominance/submission) story, then you have come to the right place. I couldn’t recommend it more highly and truly hope we get more time with these characters!
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
I eagerly awaited the release of this book. Looked forward to it as if it was a coffee date with beloved friends following a long quarantine. I have read the series multiple times, especially after a particularly tough day during this pandemic. It was a great escape. Only a few authors make me read slowly, savoring every word. Like each sentence is a delicious bite of chocolate mousse. You must start at the beginning of this series to truly appreciate this latest installment. Otherwise, you will miss the complexity of the character development and their emotional growth. You’ll miss the sweet yet erotic tale of three different people falling in love with each other in what feels like a real journey as they discover themselves and how to be partners to each other. I’m a psychologist and loved that their conflict was complex and required true growth in a believable time frame. Being a series allows for getting to know these characters and cheering them on as they grow as Individuals. Their interactions hold dramatic tension, even scenes of mundane activities. M. Q. Barber wrote in such a way that I was in their emotional journey with them. I stayed up entirely too late because I was riveted and needed to know what would come next. I strongly recommend this series and this book. I hope there are many more to come.
I've been patiently waiting, okay not so patiently waiting, for this Neighborly Affection book for too long, so I was very happy to receive an ARC. I've read all the other books in the series more than once, so I had some expectations. I expected Alice's sister to get along well with Alice, Jay, and Henry and want to embrace and learn more about their lifestyle, (Alice has been talking about her life with Jay and Henry with Ollie after all) but that didn't exactly happen. We get a hint of Ollie's interest when she is about to leave. (Next book!) I expected that Alice would choose her husband and couldn't wait to find out if it would be Jay or Henry. Yes, I know Henry loves Alice and considers her his wife, but it would be easier for Jay if he was married. Again, we get a hint of the future, next book! This book truly was about family dynamics. We learn a great deal about Alice and her family. She has been keeping big secrets from Henry and Jay. Alice is uncomfortable speaking about her family issues and Henry does not push her. We learn about Jay's family, his childhood, how he grew up and how he finally grows up. It was not only emotional for Jay, it was also emotional for me! Hopefully his understanding and loving sister Nate will be in future books! We learn about Henry's upbringing and his loving, understanding, and accepting mother. She knows her son well. Alice continues to be inventive to help Jay overcome his reluctance to some play scenes. Well done Alice and Jay. This book was so well written that I can remember all the raw emotions I felt as I read it. Each character Alice, Jay, and Henry examines themselves, their actions, and is transformed in some way. Please Ms. Barber, don't let your readers wait too long for the next book!
I was so lucky to be on the ARC TEAM for Minding Their Manners (Neighborly Affection #6) I am a huge fan of the series. I stumbled on it a few years ago and read the entire series in a few days. This is a MMF with a definite D/s relationship. I love the dynamic of Henry/Jay/ Alice and this book did not disappoint. This book delves further into the family relationships and how they push/pull on Henry, Jay & Alice. This put me through the ringer and I blew threw the book in a day. I recommend this entire series and start out in reading order. P.S. I don't want to forget the heat between all three, as always the sexy trio didn't disappoint!
I was given and ARC copy of this book and I was giddy when I started reading. It was great to be in the Henry, Jay & Alice world again! I was interested in seeing how M.Q. would bring us into this book and was impressed that it was just like picking up where that last one left off and with plenty of references to past happenings. I was exceptionally happy that we got to have all three POV's in this one as well. I felt like this book had all the elements that deemed it a Five Star read for me i.e. the highs and lows and all the feels. Thank you for the opportunity to review your work M.Q. I look forward to reading more of this group if they continue to "talk to you". =) M.Q. Barber
I was so excited to receive an advanced copy for review. Minding Their Manners is book six in the Neighborly Affections series and I definitely recommend they be read in order for maximum enjoyment (though I actually found the series with the prequel, Becoming His Master). Henry, Jay and Alice are beautiful, well-developed characters that stay with you long afterwards. The interchanging point of view throughout the book was a true pleasure for this reader. The major arc of the story is centered on Jay’s growth and once we entered the Kress family farm, I could not put the book down! I love this trio and highly recommend the series.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have been anticipating this book for years, and it truly did not disappoint! I start this by saying am the world's biggest fan of Jay, Henry, and Alice. I also recommend you read this series in order so that you are not lost.
This book made me laugh, made me cry, gave me a slight heart attack when I had to go back to a work meeting and stop reading, and even made me want to punch a character or two. All of the emotions the book left me with led to the makings of a masterpiece. Also, having read the whole series a few million times I could feel the growth of the characters, and watching their growth just felt right.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a story about love with a bit of struggle, isn’t real love always worth the little bit of struggle. This book will allow you to escape reality and will give you a relationship to fight for and believe in.
I was so excited to get to return to Henry, Jay &Alice. I’ve missed them. I immediately got caught back up in Their world. Seeing some old friends but more importantly meeting their families. This book only confirms that sometimes your chosen family is best. I was at times happy, sad and angry! I can’t wait to see where they take us next.
This book was definitely worth the wait. Love all her books but think this is the best one yet. Such depth and feeling from the characters. I could feel the struggle to find balance in every word.
I am not ashamed to say that I have been in a passionate affair with the Neighborly Affection series for many years. The series overall is a true treasure, and Minding Their Manners is another stunning gem in the collection.
The characters are deliciously complex, but accessible. M.Q. Barber deftly handles Henry, Alice, and Jay with care; each reveals their hopes and aspirations, their flawed thinking not only in their interpersonal byplay but also with their extended family dynamic. How that all comes together, the love and support they show each other, is truly inspirational.
How the trio navigates their reveal to their families is illuminating to them and to those of us playing the voyeur into their lives. Watching Jay and Alice and even Henry step so carefully in the dance, maintaining their triad equilibrium while working through the external forces is truly a joy.
Continuing to follow Alice on her path of defining her boundaries and rebalancing as a switch is a lot of fun. And it's all wonderfully steamy.
I received an advanced reader copy of Minding Their Manners in exchange for an honest review.
My favorite M/M/F-M/F/M triad belongs to M.Q. Barber’s Neighborly Affection series, and Minding Their Manners is a sparkling addition. It’s rare for an established relationship to get an update that’s thorough, gentle and sexy-as-heck. Since I’ve devoured the entire series, I’m unclear how well it would read as a standalone. But why would anyone miss some of the best personalities and relationship advice on the market?
Reality intrudes on Henry, Alice (his submissive/switch) and their submissive Jay, after they’ve lived together for three months. Though they’ve happily synchronized their schedules, needs and play times, their condo is a tight squeeze. Then, a visit by Alice’s sister is raw and unflinching. Finally, Jay decides to come out to his family over a long weekend, without recognizing the dangers; their love is icy, and conditional. Can this trio’s excellent communication, compassion and concern for one another overcome their obstacles?
M.Q. Barber masters Henry, Alice and Jay’s personalities and interactions. And she conveys this knowledge effortlessly. For example, she often backtracks in time, as she shifts to different people’s points of view between chapters. Readers get to visualize the same events through different eyes and learn the three people’s differing impressions. Perhaps these vary because one knows more information, or another is defensive and can’t tolerate the truth. And thus, I envisioned where difficulties would arise in future chapters. The technique adds tension, as pages tick-tock with dread of Jay’s impending family confrontation and layer upon layer of anxiety is etched upon Henry and Alice.
Sometimes scenes are pencil sketched, almost an outline, to make events move quickly. More weighty situations are loaded with relevant details, to slow them to their excruciating climaxes. And this occurs equally in intimate scenes as with public blow-outs. I could feel every beat of Henry, Alice and Jay’s hearts, the soaring or crushing of their spirits.
M.Q. Barber’s language is vividly sensual, like these statements. “Understanding slipped into place like the smooth burn of a neat single malt in his throat.” Or, “His voice floated, impossibly light, a surface bubble on a simmering kettle.”
And Ms. Barber’s wisdom is often conveyed in visual words as if it were one of Henry’s paintings. Here’s what he tells Alice, “‘Life is change, sweet girl. A shoreline of needs and boundaries ebbing and flowing. As each tide rolls in, we will adjust.’” But other observations are delivered in a straightforward manner. “The mind magnified faults with greater ease than it praised virtues.”
Rest assured, Henry, Alice and Jay’s appeal extends well beyond author technique! They are three average confused, self-doubting people, who exist in a society that pours greater pressure on their love. Yet I am repeatedly awed by their courage, patience, self-discipline, appreciation of one another and common decency towards their supporters and detractors alike. Can I grow up to be like them??
I found myself rapturously engulfed in each moment. Minding Their Manners is constant anticipation, making over 600 pages melt away. I didn’t want the story of these three to end, and if the book did stop a bit abruptly, it is because we are promised more is to come. Thus, my anticipation lingers, even though I am deliciously sated.
This long awaited installment in the Neighborly Affection series is another well written novel by M.Q. Barber. It’s not at all a standalone, so you’ll want to go back and read the previous books before picking this one up (yes, you want to do that, because this series is fantastic.) Family is the big theme of the book. We get to see Alice and her sister, Jay and his family, and even Henry’s mother makes an appearance. All of these interactions really show how the characters’ personalities originated in their early lives. Barber once again does a great job of making all three main characters have very distinct and consistent personalities, and the overall world is well developed. As we’ve come to expect from this series, there are definitely times the pages steam!
So why only 4 stars? Because it’s a long book, and at least half of it was spent detailing one weekend with Jay’s emotionally abusive and manipulative family. This honestly wore on me, as I have personal issues with emotional abuse. It was important to see it in action so we understand Jay better and so he can overcome this hurdle, but a lot of it seemed pretty repetitious (not in that it’s the exact situation and dialogue, but that it’s in a similar vein) and I think it could have been trimmed a bit without sacrificing the overall story. Keep in mind that all of this is personal preference, so other readers will probably not have issues with this. Again, it’s all very well written, and I was able to be immersed in the situation, which is probably why it bothered me so much.
Despite what I wrote in that last paragraph, I’m glad I read this book. I’ll definitely read the next book in the series to see where the throuple end up!
**I received a free ARC of this book in return for my honest review.

Oh, how far this throuple has come! Where once there was "just" Henry and Jay, the inclusion of Alice transformed them in ways unimaginable. When I started reading M.Q. Barber's Neighborly Affection series back in 2015 (!), this triad sparked my curiosity, but over the past six full-length novels, they've embedded themselves into my heart. With the latest book, Minding Their Manners, longtime readers get to see how far they've come and just how much growth they've experienced. The love, support, and respect Henry, Jay, and Alice have for each other is steadfast, and while we see how they handle moments with their respective families, it's the family they've created for themselves that is the highlight of this book. What doesn't break them makes them far stronger, and I'm honored to have seen them through every single high and low throughout their story. I cannot wait for more! Five stars!
How I love Henry,Alice and Jay. I stepped out of my comfort zone with the first book in the series but was quickly hooked. I just wish she wrote more and quicker LOL Barber's prose is absolutely beautiful especially when we are hearing Henry's voice. This book largely deals with how they 'come out' to and are treated by their respective families. It's no secret that Jays sister Peggy is revolting and I would have definitely done what Alice did!
This isn't technically a marriage in trouble trope since Henry, Jay and Alice aren't married but they are in a committed poly relationship and this is the story of how they continue to choose to be together and work through the hard things. This was a bit tough to get through - I felt like it could have been shorter with a lot of sex scenes edited out - I ended up skimming/skipping some altogether - but I'm glad I finished it. I won't get into the details except to say that what made me decide to continue was when Henry sat down with his best friend Will and made himself vulnerable and asked for help. We think of Henry as rather invincible and all-knowing as the dominant in the relationship but everyone needs help. We see him ask Will for advice, and that opens the door to him being vulnerable with Alice when the shit hits the fan during Labour Day weekend when they visit Jay's family. That seals their relationship and commitment to each other and it's lovely. And in hindsight - I'm reminded of what I think CD Reiss or Sierra Simone once said about what defines erotic romance - I think they said that the sex scenes advance the character development and/or plot....and here, the sex scenes serve that purpose because everything they do together as a throuple is contingent on consent and communication. Six books is A LOT to invest in a series, particularly when those 6 books follow the same characters throughout, so while this series isn't for everyone, it is for some, and I for one enjoyed it and am really happy to see that Jay has grown so much and finally come to accept who he is so that Henry's vision of a future with children can be realized. P.S. if you've followed this series from the beginning and subscribed to the Tuesdays with Jay e-newsletter, TWJ #10(?) which Barber dubbed a "Far-future Edition" is a gorgeous vignette of our happy throuple with a 4yo daughter named Lily and a baby boy on the way. I had to dig through my saved emails folder to read it because it's just so lovely to think about a fully self-realized Jay.
