The Haunting of Denton Island

Rate this book
In the cold and rugged northwest, just off the coast of Washington where Bellingham Bay and Samish Bay intersect, sits a private island owned by reclusive and eccentric millionaire Arthur Denton. Alone on the island for years, the locals know little about Arthur, save for the rumors carried to the mainland. Most have shrugged off the estate's allegations, but not everyone is ready to allow the mystery and murder to remain unsolved.

The storyline was interesting through most of the novel, but towards the end became very predictable. So much so that I thought the ending was a cop out.
In addition, from a technical standpoint, the very many typo errors were so constant that after suggesting corrections of approximately a dozen within the first 30 pages, I just gave up caring altogether.

Does anyone proof read?!?

So I'm halfway through but I had to stop to get this off my chest. So Mason, when did she call her friend to tell her she was taking the gig? When did she get her clothes. One minute she's getting the offer, the next she's taking a break off the island and she's only been there three days. Minor detail but as I read it's all I can think about. I've skipped books in this series due to errors but I like the setting of this story and I'm far enough along to need to know what the hell is going on. Does anyone need a proofreader? I'd be happy to apply!

An okay paranormal read

A story told from the protagonist point of view; and you don’t really get to know her. Not a lot of action around her eating, sleeping, and painting. There are holes in the plot that never get filled (i.e. a text to a friend requiring action, but never resolved. Departure at the start of a trip without a over-night bag, but clothes miraculously appear). The scenes are flat and really needed more detail. The events around the paranormal activities exceed those found in your average story). The reference to unseen household staff, is just an easy out for the author to not define.

Not a Satisfying Ending for Me

Aside from all the annoying proofreading errors throughout the book, the author ends the story without a proper setup, in my opinion. The mysterious text sent to a friend at the beginning which could have been a significant plot twist was left hanging. No explanation is given for one character’s involvement in the murders, and to avoid explaining how the cops could prove whodunnit, the author just writes that “fortuitously “ police used forensics to get an idea of what happened. The book had an interesting story idea, but its execution missed the mark for me.

Arthur Denton denies any paranormal occurrences

Sarah, a struggling artist, is given the opportunity of a lifetime. A wealthy patron wants her to live on his island and paint a number of pictures for him. He is a recluse, but he seems warm and friendly. Yet when Sarah finds herself painting at night and she creates a portrait of people she didn’t know, she doesn’t know what to believe. There is something odd going on in the beautiful mansion on the island. Sarah is curious and wants to learn the truth..

OMG A Story Written by A Complete Amateur

While the story line wasn’t horrible the writing and editing are almost too much to take. I only kept going til the end so that I could warn off others. How many times can one use the word ‘just’ in a sentence? Well at least four! I know the author is an indie writer but do come on and make sure you’re putting out some sort of quality.

Yuck, what an insult.

Decent story

The story line, although, seemingly done before, was enjoyable. Another pass or two with an editor may have resolved some of the typos, misuse of words and names as well as duplicate sentences.
Sarah gets hired to do some paintings for Arthur. She comes upon a mystery and is determined to solve it.

Great ghost story

When a struggling painter gets the opportunity to paint for a wealthy man, she gets more than she bargained for. A ghost, a murder mystery, all the while trying to paint pictures for her host. This book kept me going and speculating trying to figure out who the murderer was. The truth was a surprise. Great book, enjoyed it a lot.

I just wasn't all that impressed with this book. There were definitely some editing issues but even besides that it was very predictable. I also felt as though I didn't really get to know the main character at all. There were also a lot of inconsistenties in the storyline itself which a lot of books do, sure, but these were very evident and crucial to the story itself.

Apparently there either wasn’t an editor/proofreader because there were a lot of errors and inconsistencies in the story along with typos and poor sentence structure. The actual story was good but not special in any way. Skip this one.

Totally entertaining

I like the way it hides the guilty party. It has so much going on you do not expect. Any age could read and enjoy. I have it 5 stars because I had to read it all in a few hours.

Story wasn’t too bad.

I kept reading this book because I love to read and I don’t like to start a story and not finish it. However, this book is in dire need of proofreading. I’ve never seen a printing so full of errors.

GET AN EDITOR STAT!

I was not able to finish this book because the utter lack of editing has rendered it unreadable. The glaring errors destroy the continuity and make it impossible to enjoy reading the book.

Better Editing, please

I enjoyed the storyline, but there are too many spelling errors and run-on sentences and paragraphs, sorry to say. However, appreciate the effort and look forward to more improved works by Mason Dean!

unrealistic

Kind of like watching a B rated movie. If there was a stupid was to react to a situation this girl found it. She ignored terrifying events lije they were social events. Come on. Give us something scary and treacherous without the dumb

Haunting story

Good story. Does need a better spell check but could read through those. Strong story line and integrity of characters. Surprise ending!

This book desperately needs the attention of a good editor; so many typos, and boring, unneeded details.

Not good.

The proof reading was awful. Nothing more irritating than to have to re-read to try to figure what the word would be

Good mystery

Very well written. I felt like I was in the town and on the island. This is the type of story one hates to have come to an end so quickly.

Poor editing again.

I have read 32 books in this series. The story itself was enjoyable to read. The editing made it very hard to keep the details straight too many times. I have mentioned this before. It is frustrating.
