Branko Ćopić (Cyrillic: Бранко Ћопић; January 1, 1915 – March 26, 1984) was a Yugoslav writer. He was born in the village of Hašani near Bosanska Krupa. He attended schools in Bihać, Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Karlovac before moving to Belgrade to study philosophy at the University of Belgrade until his graduation in 1940.

Upon the uprising in the Bosanska Krajina in 1941, he joined the Partizans and remained in their ranks until the end of World War II. That period of his life influenced much of his literary work as can be seen by the themes he later writes about. Athe the end of the war he returned to Belgrade where he was, until 1949, the director of a children's magazine called "Pioniri". From 1951 until his death he was a professional writer.

His books have been translated into Albanian, Czech, English, Dutch, Italian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Polish, Romanian, Turkish, Slovak, German, French, and Russian, and some of them have been turned into TV series and feature-films.

He died by suicide on March 26, 1984 in Belgrade.

The very first book I ever read as a child, I knew it front to back before I could even read because of how often my mum read it to me as a baby, and I made anyone who would visit sit and listen to me recite it. I've read it countless times since, but this is my first time rereading it as an adult and I love it just as much as I did then. If you didn't grow up with this lovely little hedgehog book, you missed out.

This was my favorite childhood book. I lost track of how many times I have read it at this point.

The Hedgehog is my spirit animal, he wanted to eat like a king and then return to his house like a true introvert.

Ok, this is also a story about appreciating what you have and loving it.

But I am still gonna roll with my version of a hungry and slightly patriotic hedgehog.

This wonderful children's story is also available in English. In case that somebody is interested here's the publisher's address http://www.istrosbooks.com/products/b...

Mažuranić i slično...neka i današnja djeca uživaju u tome...

If you didn't know this book by heart, oooo, you suck!

I think every elementary school had a recital competition with this one.

Mental pictures from their dinners are still in my head.

Loved it, still so so love it.

Zgođušno i pitoreskno, izuzev stereotipnog, rasističkog ocrtavanja (karikiranja) vuka, medvjeda i svinje (;

Bezvremeni klasik koji, kroz likove lije, vuka, medveda, divlje svinje i protagoniste Ježurke Ježića, priča arhetipsku priču i pravom i krivom životnom putu, karakterima i vrednosti doma.

Istinsko remek delo za sve uzraste.

Originally published in Serbian as Ježeva kućica, this classic children's poem follows the adventures of Hedgemond the Hunter, a valiant little hedgehog who understands the value of home. Invited to his friend Fox's for dinner, he accepts with alacrity, and enjoys the experience. But when night falls he heads for home, despite his hostess's insistence that he stay the night, thus setting off a chase - insulted by his rejection of her hospitality, Fox follows him home, determined to discover what is so special about his residence, and is joined by Wolf, Bear and Boar along the way - that highlights his simple homelike virtue, and his pursuers' misguided disregard for the important things in life.

This cute little picture-book, published in 2011 by the London-based Istros Books, a small press set up to promote Balkan literature in the UK, marks the first time that Branko Ćopić's famous poem has been made available in English. I hope that Istros continues to publish translations of the children's book from that region of the world! Told in rhyming verse - "Like a velvet shawl laid over the land / Outside the window night is at hand..." - the story is engaging, although once or twice the narrative stumbles a bit. I suspect that it must have been fiendishly difficult to translate this in rhyming couplets! The artwork, done in this edition by Sanja Rešček, is colorful and cute, although I did find it odd that the wild boar was green. All in all, a sweet little tale, one I would recommend to children who enjoy animals fables, as well as to those who like stories with a rollicking rhyme.

Ta ona je 'skinuta' s popisa 'obavezne' osnovnoškolske lektire! I ne samo to! Ti ni ne ideš u osnovnu školu!"

Gle ti tog čuda, poviče Ana,
Kakvog li užasno ludoga dana!
Da netko se digne i napusti dom,
Po svijetu zaluta o poslu svom.
Do knjižnice ode, knjigu posudi

Dakle vrh.

This poem is about a hedgehog and his love for his humble home and I, as many, read it to my younger cousins and nephew so many times that I memorized it. It rhymes and it's very catchy. I attempted to translate it, but it's right down impossible. Much is lost to translation. I'll give you the first three verses, to get the taste of it. NOTE: this is my attempt not an official translation, if there's one.

FAMOUS HUNTER

Through out forest,
Without path,
Without way,
Hedgy Hedgehog,
Wanders all day.

Hunting fills his days,
He's spotted often,
With three hundred arrows,
He's charging his pray.

And wolf,
And bear,
and even dog,
know well this famous hunter,
Hedgy Hedgehog.

This is a just beautiful tale.
It is a fun little story about Hedgehog (who doesn't like hedgehogs) and importance of ones home (no matter is it poor or rich)
One might look for an allegory about Tito - Stalin split.
But in the end, this is just an amazing work of art.
Branko Ćopić and Ježeva kućica should be more famous.
Will end with the best parts of the book:

To samo hulje, nosi ih vrag,
Za ručak daju svoj rodni prag!

Po šumi danas, bez staze, puta
Ježurka Ježić lovi i luta.
Vještak i majstor u poslu svom
radi i čuva rođeni dom

Pokušali su prevesti ježevu kućicu. To smatram zločinom višeg reda.
