Growing up the eldest son of Sean Valens wasn't always easy and it wasn't always fun, but the truth is when your father/son bonding moments consist of going out with your dad to blow things up and kill djevels, you really don't have a lot to complain about. Sure, as the eldest son there were a lot of expectations placed on him, but SJ never had a problem with any of that. Mainly as he was the one doing the placing.

After a couple of tours with the infantry on the border, as well as inside of the DEZ (Demon Exclusion Zone), SJ is now in charge of the hunter teams tasked with rounding up and elimination all of those djevels on the outside. It's a hard and often thankless job but he welcomes the challenge.

The only problem is, it seems things have been slowly getting worse, not better, over the last few years and he wouldn't be his father's son if he didn't take it personally.

WARNING: "Sean (SJ) contains scenes of blatant disregard for things that we should all regard! Things like your elders and those 'older and wiser' and any other thing a headstrong young man might run into. Plus a pair of dangerous and slightly conniving wives who do occasionally need to be put into their place. Oh, and let's not forget sneaky tigers, not so sneaky cheetahs, and a poor chair that was just minding it's own business until it was smashed into little pieces against the wall. (Oh, and yes, there's sex in this book as well, a little mayhem, property destruction, but sadly no robbery).

I'm new to the Harem / LitRPG thing (If I'd known more about LitRPG when I wrote Shadow, I might have incorporated more elements of that into it).
I have a FT job, so I work on this when I can. Hopefully the next one will be even better.

Good, but convoluted
So the idea here was to tell three stories in three books at set in the same time period from three points of view. Each book tells the story of a son of Sean Valens as they live, love, and battle the Djevils that have invaded earth. That would be ambitious enough if it weren't for the fact that Sean Valens has some twenty kids by six wives and two mistresses, and there was a cast of hundreds at the start. Book one: Mihalis tells a fairly straight forward story and doesn't tie itself up in knots trying to familiarize you with all of these new faces and strange names.
Book two (this one) however spends more time telling you who all these people are and what their relationships are to each other, and it can make for some slow going. It doesn't help that the sentence structures can be hard to parse as you are told about family relationships that there are no terms for in english. (How do you say my half sister, second daughter of my fathers third wife? the family tree of just the kids is 3 pages long.)
-Now add to that the star of this book, Sean Jr. is a bit of an administrator. Yes he kicks ass and jumps off cliffs chased by fiery explosions, but his primary task is management. That may not sound as exciting as scout or sniper, but in this family a personnel manager is busier than a... let's just say it's an important job. -All though not as exciting to watch as an Incubus taking over a corrupt town in djevil country, it may be the more irreplaceable position.
-Oh yeah, Did I mention that the MC, Sean Jr. or SJ for short is already married? so wile there is sex right off the bat there is no seduction or even any introduction to the wives, -It's just straight to the slice of life scenes of domestic regularity.
Wow! Okay, you got all that? That is a lot for one middle book to carry, and this book does it pretty well. You wouldn't be here if you didn't love these characters as much as I do. It's great so see them all again and see how they are all getting on with life. There are attempts made to inject some fresh romance into this book. SJ ends the book with two more wives than he started with, but both courtships are abrupt and come out of nowhere.
This was a fun book, but flawed. I liked it and will read it again. More importantly I will read the next one. It was important to get the story straight, but it was more info dump than any other book of his that I know of.

Sadly, there's not much to like about this latest book in this series. The main problems with this book are:

1 - SJ isn't that interesting - There's not really a hook to interest me in SJ. Sean senior was the first werelion in generations, the first werelion to also be a magician, and also a genius with magic. All three of these things made him stand out as a protagonist. Mihalis is the first black lion (which holds promise to have more meaning than just the colour) and is half-demon. Both of these things were elements that hooked the reader into the character without having to rely purely on the plot. Sean has none of this. He's a lesser version of Sean senior, making me want to read about senior rather than junior. His story as a child of Sean isn't as interesting as Mihalis' either. Basically, he felt like the wrong choice for the protagonist.

2 - Retreads old ground - This book spends far too much time retreading old ground. The first half of the story basically retells Mihalis' story from SJ's perspective. This type of storytelling is something I have never enjoyed as it is taking the story backwards rather than bringing it forward. As for the second half of the book, well that just felt too much like the familiar demon stories we have read before and felt like a re-introduction to antagonists that we are already familiar with.

3 - It doesn't really accomplish much - This story doesn't move the overarching story on much. It makes this story feel a little pointless.

4 - The same issues as the previous book - To add to the troubles, this book has the same issues that I found in Mihalis. These include:

a - Too many characters (original characters from Valens legacy and all the new characters from Sean's enormous family)
b - Not enough time getting to know characters we are supposed to care about
c - It doesn't feel like 20 years in the future

Overal Verdict

Overall, this book did the opposite of Mihalis. That first book got me interested in this new story and made me excited for more books in this universe even if they are told from a different viewpoint than Sean Senior. This book just makes me want to either go back to Sean Senior or maybe even Mihalis, but whatever the case I am definitely not interested in yet another new protagonist in the next book, especially if it just retells the same story yet again.

We do get the new "current" Valens timeline story from Sean Jr's perspective. It does have some crossover moments with Mihalis, but does give us Sean's place in the scheme of things. As the eldest son, he has some big shoes to fill. We see a little of him doing that. There is a little resolution with the Prince Talt character, but we are left with enough threat hooks to carry this series onward.

Another win

Another great book in the Valens universe. Fun characters, fun story. Really can't wait for the next Mihalis book and then the next Sean book.

Disappointing. I liked the first book in the new series as it was something new. I thought it added new life to a series that was getting a little stale. This one didn't really add anything to the universe. The first book was about the dark elf lion. Something that was utterly unique. This one is about the first born lion Sean Jr. Pretty much all Sean Jr brings to the table is that he is the oldest lion son and feels it is his job to look out for everyone else. He brings nothing else to the world. Nothing interesting anyway. The first half of the story is a rehash of what happened with Mikhalis in book 1 from Sean Jr's POV. We get introduced to about 20-30 of Sean's brothers, sisters and cousins but we don't get nearly enough time with them to form any kind of connection. Because everyone is having so much sex with everyone else it sort of lost the luster. All his brothers and sisters are having sex all the time with whoever they find attractive and it is no big deal, then Sean finds someone, gets them pregnant right away and calls them his mate. What about the 100 other women he slept with? What is the difference between them and his wives. It is hard to have it both ways. To say that sex is not big deal and a lot of fun and you should have as much of it as possible with as many people as possible. Then also say that sex with the people you love is special. They kind of contradict each other. The actual story itself was also pretty boring. It sounds like the rest of this series will be told by one of the other Valen's POV. Not sure if I am going to continue. I do still enjoy the writing of this author but this one added nothing to the world that already exists.

Good...but...

This was a good continuation of the story started in Book 1, but needed a better plot device than rehashing verbatim scenes from that first book. It did best when it brought us more of SJ's story.

What also stood out because such things usually don't in a Jan Stryvant book was the number of typos and plot "misses." It definitely could have spent a bit more time at the proofreaders. I reported the ones I found, hopefully they'll be updated in a revision,

My last point is not with this book per se but the almost obligatory mind-blowing sex that has to be included in this genre. It's to the point where I just skip over those parts and feel the stories don't suffer at all from not reading them or just skimming to ensure I don't miss any important plot poins. My point being if the story is just as good without the sex, why put it in? The stories are obviously strong enough to do without that "hook."

I realize fans of the genre expect it, but I think authors may want to consider integrating sex scenes better? I remember Sean and Roxy dancing around their mutual attraction quite a bit before sex happened.

And yes, lions are gods, but they ought to run into strong, interesting women, human and other races alike, who just aren't attracted to them. THAT would be a cool plot device to base some tension off of.

Okay, this is the second book in this new series and I have to admit, I really didn't like this book as much as I liked the first book. First of all, this book is about Sean (SJ) and the author is trying to write these books with the actions occurring concurrently - meaning we get to find out what was happening to SJ during the exact same time frame that we just read about from the events in Mihalis' life. In other words, there is a lot of repetition. We have to go through some of the very same events that we just went through with Mihalis, as we are following along with SJ's life.

Also, while I like SJ, there isn't the plot hook that we found with Mihalis. He seems to be in a "managerial" type role and there isn't the same build up or drama. Regardless, it was interesting and filled some holes. I had read a review that said you didn't even have to read this book and could move directly on to book three and not miss anything, but I don't agree with that. There are tidbits of information that DO move the plot along and there are things that are important to the overall story that you would miss if you skipped this book. Just my opinion.....

Kaboom!!!

I have read all 18 of the Valen's Legacy, all of the wife's tales, Mihalis and now Sean (SJ). Sean lives up the the same excellence as the entire series has over the time I have been reading Stryvant. It isn't easy being the eldest son of Sean Valens. You are the peacekeeper of your siblings, you are the heir apparent of the entire operation, and you are also the commander of the forces arrayed against the djevals. Great action adventure novel. As a continuation of the series it doesn't really break very much new ground. It is a passing of the torch which seems to be laying a foundation for further Heritage novels as much as anything. But it is a good, entertaining book. If you are a fan of the Valen's Legacy it certainly lives up to its heritage. (No pun intended) It stands on its own well enough, but, makes a LOT more sense if you have read the original series. It's five stars for me, a rollicking good time and where the appetite for more volumes to come.

Plenty of adventure

Urban fantasy magic fae harem adult situations military
The first book focused on Mihalis aka Mike, the son of Sean Valens, mage and were-lion, and his dark elf assassin wife. This book focuses on Mike's half brother, SJ (Sean Junior), son of Sean and Roxy, were-cheetah and first wife. Like Mike, SJ is of age, several years older than Mike himself and already married to two dark elves for the past two years when the novel opens. As one of the oldest of the male children in the Valens household, SJ is tasked with keeping sibling friction to manageable levels, and as an adult, aids in defeating the alien invaders.

I'm greatly enjoying the new series thus far, and keeping all the siblings straight is greatly helped with the family tree at the end. I'm just not sure alternating entire novels on two MCs will work, despite loving the characters, plot, dialogue, and pacing. I hope it works out because I want to see the series succeed.

Interesting

As stories go its was fun to read. Well for me it was fun to read people may agree to they may disagree with me and that is their option.

So what I liked about the book or its main character SJ is that the old saying we are more like our parents then we care to admit holds tru. At the same time SJ was able to incorporate the lesson from The olders character like Chad and Steve. What I mean is that SJ over effectiveness to handle both his family and other life issues is far better then both his dads and his grand dad ability.
This is just one of the reasons I like the book

Now for what I did not like I finished reading it
Second is how Talt's death seem to be so easy boring.....

This book serves no point.

The first half of the book is literally a re-telling of the previous book from Sean JRs perspective with a smattering of phone calls and meetings where the same conversations are had with different people; you read the same info 3 or 4 times.

The second half of the book is finally getting to the djevels and fighting them. The outcome of which changed little. It's one long action scene.

In the previous book, we got to see the main character have a little person growth and self discovery. This book is just a waste of time. Sean JR is basically a carbon copy of his father. Also, like in other books, there are dozens of names dropped for characters that we know nothing about. There's no development. Nearly every character is the exact same.

Awesome!

Love the book series and the valets legacy and this one is even better. My only problem so far is that the lions feel too immortal...like I know that's their shtick but still, maybe make it to where the king djevils or maybe higher can actually permakill them? It'll give them a sense of urgency other than the whole apocalyptic background. When it seems lime there's a genuine threat to the MC I always get into the story a lot more because it's easier to emphasize with a mortal being than an immortal God, at least it is to me. Just something to consider

Next book in the Valen's Heritage series. Well done as always, fills in some details from the previous book (Mihalis). Not quite as exciting/interesting as that book, but definitely in the format of the main Valens books. Will be interesting to see how each of the children develop their own persona and lives.

If you are into the Valens series already, go and read, NOW! If not, get the first book of the Valens adventure and enjoy some very good reads. Warning - NOT FTB!

Action packed

I love all the Valens stories, and this is no exception. As its a part 2 the action is immediate and constant, moat of the setup having been done in Mihalis. However we do still get some more backstory nd expansion of the characters we previously met. Honestly, SJ is a cool MC, he feels like a more established character. Mihalis is still my favorite, but I see where both fit in the narrative. Can't wait for more.

An exciting thrill Ride

This second book in the Valens heritage is a very fun read. Once again he weaves a good story The personalities are well thought out. Almost every character has a story to tell and they contribute to this story very convincingly. There is a lot of action and a lot of drama and I for one like the humor that is involved here and there. The story is getting very exciting and I can't wait to see what happens next. But I guess I will have to. 😋😎

Sean Jr. (SJ) is definitely a “chip off the old block!

I totally loved the dramatic action in this book! And, of course, all the characters were great in their own way, even the bad guys. Somebody somewhere once said that you could tell a lot about someone by who their enemies were. I also loved the surprise ending! By this book and this series and read them now! You WILL be sooo glad that you did!! :)

Sean Jr. does his Part

Sean Jr. is his father's goto guy when it comes to fighting the demons and he does a great job because he was trained by the best fighters. He can use weapons and magic, but most of all he uses his smarts.
He is also the goto guy for his many many brothers and sisters, and keeps them all in line.

Great follow-up to the last book and a really fun read. Can't wait for more.

A really fun read

I wasn't sure how this would be after Mihalis, but was pleasantly surprised. I like how it's happening in parallel to the first book but from a different viewpoint. I also wasn't sure about coming in and there already being 2 wives, but it worked and SJ still grew his pride. Can't wait for the next one.

Great novel extending the overall Valens novel universe

Really enjoyable that I basically read in one session, so I feel it was a little short, but I have been reading some very long books recently. Great story and good characters although Sean Jnr didn’t fall far from the tree, as his action’s and even personality are very similar to his father. Short, sharp and very good.

Yup.

I seriously loved the Valens Legacy, and heritage is wholly living up to it.
I am enjoying the fruition of things from the first series.
I am happy to see references to people and events that were hoped for.
I dont think a third son story is fully necessary, tho' more sibling "screen time" would be amusing. This was a good get.

A Hell of a ridel

Ok, it's about twenty years after the great 'demon' invasion, and the Valens clan is kicking serious butt! Anything more, and I'd be spoiling the story.

But, Damn it Jan, now I've got to go back and buy hard copies of the ENTIRE Valens Legacy AND the Valens Heritage!!! That's gonna cost a fortune! That said, it'll still be well worth it!

Junior's adventure

Sean's eldest is married with 2 wives and a command of troops and partly the lesser of his many siblings. This is another enjoyable read in the Valens universe. Yes this is a "harem" novel but it is mainly a fun, urban fantasy novel with shifters, magic users, family and plenty of battles.

Truly Fantastic Book!

The second book in the Valens Heritage series. Is an awesome book. With a great storyline as well as the great humor of Jan Stryvant the author. Who also writes fantastic action scenes. Only bummer is that the book wasn't about Mihalis SJ's brother. Whom I'd love to read more about. Can't wait till book three comes out!

Worth the wait!!!!

Regardless of the length between books this one was definitely worth it!!!! I wasn't sure how it was going to be possible to write about two powerful characters effectively but wow you've done it!!! Such amazing world building and characters are just outstanding!! I can't wait to see what happens next!!!

Solid Addition

A solid addition for sure to the Valens universe. I kind of like how they now have mihalis working the more .... "undercover?" Aspect of things. With him on the sneaky side and SJ on the loud, front facing side, I think they have solid initial footing to pursue their goals. It will be interesting to see how they do over time.

This is lacking the quality characters that made the first series so good.

And since the first fifth is just "Mihalus" from a slightly different perspective, it is not that entertaining. So the characters are boring and the story is meh. I just don't see any of the kids being as fun to read as the parents. This was a fun idea, but does not work for me.

A pretty good book!

I'm not a fan of those books that try and weave several stories into.one, few can pull it off, Randy Darren did it by stealth in his many different storys, and now Van Srty has given it a shot. I'm finished with Boook/#2(SJ) and looking forward.to.book#3. Give it a try!

Love the second perspective

I’m glad the whole book is from SJ’s perspective and not intertwined in Mike’s perspective book. I hate the switching for long periods in one book! Mike’s book was more interesting though and I’m more eager to see that one continue
