We often make judgments about good and bad, right and wrong. Philosophical ethics is the critical examination of these and other concepts central to how we evaluate our own and each others' behavior and choices. This text examines some of the main threads of discussion on these topics that have developed over the last couple of millenia, mostly within the Western cultural tradition. The book is designed to be used alone or alongside a reader of historical and contemporary original sources, and is freely available in web and digital formats at If you are adopting or adapting this book for a course, please let us know on our adoption form for the Introduction to Philosophy open textbook Cover art by Heather Salazar; cover design by Jonathan Lashley. Had to read this book for my ethics course. I enjoyed how challenging the book was to read, in that it introduced some fairly complex topics in such a simple and easy to understand manner. I liked that rather than each chapter simply being a normal textbook chapter, it felt as though I was just reading a collection of essays describing the many types of ethical philosophies the editors wants readers to know about.
It's philosophy. I was uncertain about what I'd expect from taking the current Moral Issues class I enrolled into, however upon reading the beginning of this book, I was gripped by the themes and ethical questions presented within. Everyone should take time to learn about formulating philosophical questions and understanding different perspectives at least once in their lifetime.
