M.K. Hoffman invites us into the mind of a blue-collar worker during The Great Recession in 2008 in the novel, The Rant. Over the course of 138 pages, Hoffman describes the grueling and frustrating hours he spent trying to reach the proper authorities so they could investigate his theory on what caused the recession. While the rest of the world fell a part due to the economic turmoil, you get a look inside the detailed work of a veteran, fisherman and dancer of who just wanted justice to be served.
Hoffman allows you inside one of the most vulnerable times in the U.S. economic history (perhaps the world). His playful language and personality made The Rant easy to follow. While the years described in the novel were crucial and tense, his comedic voice that oozed through the edgy moments gives this novel a wonderful comic relief. Hoffman’s story allows the audience to really connect and empathize with him.
The Rant will empower you to be courageous and patriotic while also finding time to enjoy a laugh or two.
The overall theme of justice in this novel is poetic and almost serene. Reliving the years that effected so many people, Hoffman reminds us that even though we may not be a prestigious member of Wall Street, but we certainly still do have a voice.
