For all we know, or think we know, about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, what we don’t know is far, far greater. In the duo’s first case, A Study in Scarlet, we learn that Holmes and Watson met on January 1st, 1881, and subsequently moved into an apartment together at 221b Baker Street. Their first case officially began on March 4th of that year, and it is argued that “The Adventure of the Resident Patient” possibly took place in October of 1881, depending on which version of the story you read. But what happened during the rest of 1881? Or all of 1882?
To help fill the void, we have asked today’s top Sherlockian writers to rummage through their Watsonian correspondence and uncover the many mysteries left untold until now. There’s a new story for every month of the year!
This wonderful anthology is a Sherlockian's dream, that wishes to fill up all the blanks in Canon with fresh tales— one for each month. As Bob katz explained in his 'Introduction', this would give us a total of 429 untold tales, excluding the bonus ones that might be slipped in. Now we all know, quantity is not always matched by quality. However, if the first volume is anything to go by, we seem to be in safe hands. My favourites were~ 1. David Marcum's "The Fashionably Dressed Girl": Probably the most uplifting tale in this entire collection; 2. Derrick Belanger's "Mrs. Turner's Dilemma"; 3. jayantika Ganguly's "The Adventure of the Ides of March"; 4. Mike Adamson's "His Wonders to Perform"; 5. Will Murray's "The Misadventure of the Ring of Regret"; 6. I.A. Watson's "The Adventure of the Wooden Soldiers": Very well-researched tale that showcases 'the science of deduction' to the fullest; 7. Craig Janacek's "The Adventure of the Fallen Desperado". The remaining six stories (including the bonus) were also enjoyable, if not especially illuminating. The book has been printed nicely, with the timeline of 1881 prefixed, setting the perspective right. Highly recommended to all admirers of the Great Detective and his Boswell.
I loved this book! And what a great idea from the creators of this collection! I'll be sure to watch for further stories in the coming future! The book features twelve stories, one for each month of the year, and written by tried and true Holmes writers of our time. The goal is to write books like this for every year of Holmes' career until he reaches retirement. This book is 1881, and gives a fair glimpse of how Holmes and Watson got to know each other. Worth reading and an excellent start to a new Sherlock Holmes collection.
Finished this book a few days ago. I thought all the stories featured were very entertaining and fun to read. It was interesting to see about the various authors portrayed the early beginnings of Watsons friendship with Homes and how he became more involved with the investigations. I also liked how the stories endings were not obvious early on but kept you guessing until near the end when Holmes did his usual big reveal as he likes to do. The beginning of Lestrads involvement with Homes was great as well. Recommended.
Few of the official stories are set in this first year that Holmes and Watson met, and this book tries to fill in the gaps. Watson is still a bit baffled with what it is Holmes does and how, Lestrade is in the height of his rivalry with Gregson, and Sherlock is still sort of working out how to do his job. The stories are mixed, but overall good, and sometimes great.
So much like ACD's style, it flowed just like he was was talking. Great job to everyone involved, writers to editors to publishers and all the required staff to get this edition completed and shared with all readers. Looking forward to more editions.
I really enjoyed reading this book I like the way it was presented, and I hope there's 1883 before I finish 1882, which I started last night. It's relaxing, surprising, and logical from a detective's point of view.
As far as the mysterys go, they weren't so bad. But nothing that make you feel like you are actually in a Sherlock holmes adventure. Some were pretty bad but all in all, it was an enjoyable time.
