Unacknowledged: The Possible Biological Mother of Howard Hughes

Rate this book
His true birthdate and place have been argued for decades. Now, one bold woman may have uncovered a shocking new angle…In the early 1900s, fourteen-year-old Emma did the impossible to survive. Forced to flee her alcoholic father, she moved to Galveston, Texas, and sold her body to start a new life.

According to history, on Christmas Eve 1905, Howard Hughes Sr. became father to one of America’s most influential tycoons. More than a century later, rumors still abound that his wife never showed any signs of pregnancy. Howard Hughes Jr.’s certificate of baptism exposes a puzzling discrepancy. Now the conceivable and staggering truth of the famous businessman and philanthropist’s origins has been brought to vivid life in a powerful fictional recreation of a tragic scenario.

Author and researcher Ora Smith may well be the great-niece of Howard Hughes. In this dramatized account of the story of the mysterious inventor, engineer, pilot, and ultra-rich recluse, she reveals detailed information and evidence that fill in some of history’s most mystifying blanks. With sections creatively retelling the narrative of the wealthy man’s possibly illicit beginnings juxtaposed with Smith’s meticulous pulling-apart of historical records, you’ll be moved by the sensational and wretched past of this enigmatic icon.

Was Howard Hughes Jr.’s eccentricity born of one young woman’s checkered past?

The Possible Biological Mother of Howard Hughes is a thoughtfully written work that dramatically recounts a new theory of the conception and birth of an American legend. If you like true stories stirred with a dash of sensation, bygone eras richly examined, and answers to intriguing questions, then you’ll love Ora Smith’s extraordinary reimagining.

Ora Smith’s one of those people who always has a project she’s excited about. She’s an author, artist, genealogist, seamstress, lover of a good book, traveler, antiquer, upcycler, and history buff. Although she’s lived in Arizona since 1986, she spent her early life in Lake Tahoe, California, where her passion to write blossomed on a tranquil riverbank with a beautiful backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

As a genealogist, she spent thirty-plus years researching family histories. With her historical “Heritage Fiction” novels for both adult and young adult, she’s made a niche in writing about ancestors, creating fascinating stories based on true events. She loves nothing better than to be whisked off to past eras to meet those whose lives are worth sharing.

As an author and artist, Ora creates faith inspired stories and children’s books. She writes and illustrates her picture book Stories of Light series, hoping to help children understand what the Light of Christ can mean to them. Watch for her release of The Son and Sun: An Amazing Story of Light in early 2025.

Although she writes on many subjects, she’s sure you’ll find in her writings a book that’s meant just for you.

Unacknowledged is as much the story of how one woman discovered and came to accept her great-grandmother’s scandalous past as it is an argument for why we should believe Howard Hughes’s birth mother was a prostitute. Actually, it wasn’t an argument at all. Though Ora Smith is clearly convinced, she shares what she learned, then allows readers to reach their own conclusions.
I found the entire book—fact, fiction, and memoir—an enjoyable read.

Captivating. I became engulfed in the author's family history right from the start, not really caring as I became more and more invested in the story of her great-grandmother, whether she was the mother of Howard Hughs or not. However, the author made a solid case for the possibility.
Trying to present historical fiction as accurately as possible, the author frequently inserts her commentary on the conclusion she made with the information available.
Great research into the life and times of Galveston Texas, circa 1900, especially the darker side of life.
Overall, well done! Inspires one to investigate further their own family stories!
