My summary: Sorcerers and non-magic humans are at war. The Diren are hunting those with magic and coming close to annihilating them. Lily is a sorceress who has been running from a Diren that she calls Hunter. She is trying to find help but ends up bringing destruction everywhere she goes. When she makes a special connection with a stranger, it could lead to great destruction or salvation for all.
Positives
The book has relevant, important themes. it promotes setting aside differences and working together. It encourages loving one another and sacrificial love instead of selfish pursuits.
The twists at the end surprised me.
The scenes with Atarah were very beautiful and imaginative in description and meaning.
Negatives
The drama tended to be overdramatic. Sonetimes Lily's reactions were too dramatic to feel realistic. Lily was so intensely angry. She is a teenager, and she does face difficult situations, so it does work, but it still felt like a little too much.
Many situations and events felt too coincidental to be believable (like people showing up at just the right time).
The book had instant love, and I wish the book had instead developed the relationship.
Overall, I think this just isn't my kind of book. The story was interesting, and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened. Younger readers like teens would probably connect with it better. It does have good lessons for readers.
