Lily Fraya is the last of all the sorcerers. Her kind was brutally wiped out when war broke out between those with magic and those without.
Hunted by those that call themselves the Diren, Lily is on the run and has been for years. Anyone caught attempting to help her is executed for treason. She learns to hide who she truly is in order to keep those she loves safe, until one day, she meets a boy. When her secret is revealed will he accept her for who she is or will he turn on her and join the Diren?
Another battle is looming. A battle that has been foretold for centuries, but Lily never imagined it would come like this. She is the last sorceress. Who is left to stand with her against the Diren?
My summary: Sorcerers and non-magic humans are at war. The Diren are hunting those with magic and coming close to annihilating them. Lily is a sorceress who has been running from a Diren that she calls Hunter. She is trying to find help but ends up bringing destruction everywhere she goes. When she makes a special connection with a stranger, it could lead to great destruction or salvation for all.
Positives The book has relevant, important themes. it promotes setting aside differences and working together. It encourages loving one another and sacrificial love instead of selfish pursuits. The twists at the end surprised me. The scenes with Atarah were very beautiful and imaginative in description and meaning.
Negatives The drama tended to be overdramatic. Sonetimes Lily's reactions were too dramatic to feel realistic. Lily was so intensely angry. She is a teenager, and she does face difficult situations, so it does work, but it still felt like a little too much. Many situations and events felt too coincidental to be believable (like people showing up at just the right time). The book had instant love, and I wish the book had instead developed the relationship.
Overall, I think this just isn't my kind of book. The story was interesting, and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened. Younger readers like teens would probably connect with it better. It does have good lessons for readers.
The Last of My Kind is the best fantasy I’ve read to date. The author has an amazing imagination and built this beautiful world around it. The Last of My Kind is centered around a young girl, Lily, who has had a tough life. She watched her siblings die and then was hunted down like an animal. I felt so bad for Lily, and if I could have saved her, I would have done it in a heartbeat!
Lily’s had a rough life growing up, and things are made worse when Hunter, the most feared Diren of all time, comes to destroy her. She fights him off but barely escapes. If it wasn’t for a newfound friend, her life would have surely been lost. The twist and turns of this story is a real page-turner and would keep anyone on the edge of their seats.
The author did an amazing job with these stories and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the future!
