Tsukina is a single, thirty-something office worker who's favorite thing is curling up with a good book. When a god tells her that she must go to another world to become its magical savior, Tsukina isn't interested. She has zero desire to go on some grand hero's journey. So when she arrives in this strange new land, she decides to use her magical powers to create a cozy little book café instead. Her first customer is a handsome soldier who loves reading almost as much as she does. But when a fellow "savior" starts causing trouble, Tsukina might have to play the hero after all!

i mean, who doesn't want a god to teleport them to a snowy town, where you not only have magical powers, but you can create your very own bookshop cafe in the forest? oh, and a hot book loving knight is your only regular customer? 11/10 living the dream imo lol. well, that's the very barebones premise of the start of this story, but the stakes are increased when another person who was teleported to this world is not only not doing their intended job, but abusing the power that was given to them. and i am sure our main character will intervene in the second installment.

but i really loved this, and it really was the perfect cozy atmosphere with a set up that has left me really intrigued to read on. plus, you really can’t go wrong with a magical cafe and bookstore, therefore i really (and so very easily) recommend this to you all.

trigger + content warnings: bullying, abuse, magical compulsion, brief mention of loss of parents and grandparents in past

ೃ⁀➷ I absolutely LOVED THIS SO MUCH.

I'm starting to adore isekai stories a lot. Like they always end up being so wholesome and feel-good? Especially if the main character gets to become the villainess in this new world and has to save herself. Those are the BEST isekai stories.

But in this manga, it's different. Because the main character, Tsukina, travels to a whole new world but instead of becoming the savior, she rather prefers to open her own bookstore + café and live a comfy life, you know? I am rooting for you! I would do the same.

This story is very cozy, like the VIBES ARE THERE. She lives in this cold kingdom and her bookstore/café is so cozy and warm and cute. One day, a soldier appears and he stays for a while, reading and eating her delicious food. He basically falls in love first sight lmao. And he keeps returning! I love the start of this new relationship (because I hope it turns into love! Like it hints at it so I'm positive).

Of course, things are going to start happening because we find out that the same god who sent Tsukina into this world also sent another girl previously and this girl is basically destroying the whole kingdom. So now I think what Tsukina is going to do is save the kingdom from the other savior and yeah, it's going to be very interesting! I'm excited to see where this story goes *happy dance*

Updated Review 10/18/23: I FORGOT HOW AMAZING THIS IS!!! 😭😭😭😭

Pretty sure I giggled and smiled through the whole thing because THIS is the kind of wish-fulfillment isekai I can fully get behind!

So excited to be diving into this series in its fullness because this first volume is so so so good! HIGHLY recommend checking it out!

Original Review 8/7/22: WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THIS?!?!? IT IS SO GOOD!!!

And oh my goodness, why is the paperback of this out of stock?!?! COME BACK IN STOCK SO I CAN BUY THIS PHYSICALLY!!!

Gah, this was amazing and FAR exceeded my expectations!

I got tired of soooo many people saying I need to read this (LOL!!) and picked this up on BookWalker after getting a coupon from filling out Seven Seas' survey. While I only have it digitally, I will DEFINITELY be getting this physically!

I'm not even sure what to say because it created all the warm fuzzy feelings and cannot wait to read the next volumes there are out! It's one that I'll definitely reread again because I LOVED Tsukina! It was awesome having an older MC who is mature and uses her new magical abilities to make her ultimate dream book cafe. How cool is that?!

Throw in our heroic knight and it's a done deal! LOL! Even he is super mature and feel their relationship will be absolutely beautiful! Its incredibly nice to see them have shared interests and talk about the books they love (as well as read each other's recommendations).

While this first volume might feel steady and a casual (good) slow-going, this first volume really sets things up in that you KNOW things are going to get gradually intense because of the other savior in this world. I'm curious if there will ever be a battle between our MC and her, but for now, I love how Tsukina is using her magic to help those around her (even if it's just Il and one other person LOL) and makes an effort to make a relaxing atmosphere.

I HIGHLY recommend this first volume! I am already going to be stalking when this volume comes back in stock and binge reading the rest once I can get my hands on it!

Thank you to every person who has adamant I should read this because you were right and sorry I took so long! LOL!

3.5 rounded up, because how could I not love an isekai story where the heroine, when confronted by a god ready to send her to another world, very calmly turns him down because she's thirty-three and would rather stay home and read, thank you very much. When he won't take no for an answer, she says she'll go be his savior, but only if she can spend her time in a forest running a book cafe and not do any of that "savior" crap unless absolutely necessary, and since there's already another isekai victim in Othell, that shouldn't be a problem.

Or should it? Even if Tsukina ends up on a much more traditional isekai trajectory, this gets points for how she begins it, and I very much hope that the original light novels get an English translation in the near future, because I can tell that the adaptation is skimming lightly in places.

God (or adjacent deity) needs Tsukina to go save another world, but she’s in her thirties and would rather curl up with a book. When he won’t take no for an answer, Tsukina agrees, but at least gets a book café for her troubles. Except her actual troubles are only beginning…

I’m definitely more on board for ‘career woman gets a better life in a new world’ isekai than I am the ‘teenager gets the girls and can defeat everything with his pinkie’ fare, so this one starts off well in my estimation and is a decent little read.

Two things that bode well off the jump are that Tsukina is actually very content with her life and has no desire to go anywhere, a fun switch having somebody so well adjusted, and that being a bit wiser she knows how to wheedle all sorts of goodies out of God - it’s nice to see a hero who’s overpowered because they know how to game the system versus straight narrative fiat.

There’s a certain charm to her desire to just run a book café and if she gets customers, great, but if she doesn’t, well, she is most content around a good book anyway. Overpowered but content is a nice change of pace. There’s a smidgen of food porn in here I liked as well.

Her café’s sole customer turns out to be Il, a gallant knight, who is both stoic and studious in equal measure and no points for guessing that the sparks start to gently fly. There’s something rather gentle about the whole thing, honestly, and I’m not above admitting that watching them slowly grow close is really low-key charming.

Of course, there is some friction - Tsukina’s not the only saviour sent to this world, but she’s definitely the nicest. The other one we meet is an absolute terror who is subconsciously channeling her power into enabling her incredibly awful tendencies.

So you have a quiet café and a showdown in the offing between somebody who doesn’t want to save the world and somebody who wants to just bend it to her selfish whims. This is actually one of my favourite tweaks to the isekai trope, when the new arrivals are awful, so I approve of this.

The biggest problem is that this showdown is in the works and this volume is slow burning and sedate in a way that I don’t mind, but you shouldn’t expect high adventure from this volume. This is chill enough for a nice lazy day read and a good one at that.

3.5 stars - and I think seasonal generosity is going to round this up. It’s not the most exciting book, but a calm slice of life about somebody realizing a dream and, eventually, fighting for it. And, hey, love of books, who can’t relate?

When Tsukina is approached by a floating orb claiming to be God, who tells her that she's been summoned to another world in order to be its savior, she says no thanks. God is somewhat taken aback, since everyone else seemed thrilled to be summoned and couldn't wait to start their new lives. However, all those other people were starry-eyed teenagers, and Tsukina is a single thirty-something with a stable job and a quiet life that she enjoys. She has no desire to fight monsters and face danger.

God tells her that this summoning in nonnegotiable, but if she'd prefer, she could live a quiet life and just be on standby in case another savior needs help. Tsukina reluctantly agrees but gets God to grant her a bunch of wishes so that she'll be as comfortable in her new world as possible.

And so begins Tsukina's life as the owner of a little book cafe in the middle of nowhere, whose first (and mostly only) customer, Il (the author's awkward shortening of his full name, Soeil), a bookish knight.

I think I may have officially read too many of these isekai stories. Even the ones starring women are getting old, because it's the same basic story templates over and over. This one might have been more enjoyable if the author had been willing to let Tsukina flounder even the slightest bit, but no, despite the fact that God's exact words were that he'd grant "any one wish" (my emphasis), he instead granted a massive list's worth of them. The books in Tuskina's cafe were magically protected from damage, the cafe itself was magically protected, Tsukina had powerful defensive magic, and she could call literally anything into being that she needed.

I thought maybe the fact that she didn't even try to hide that she had access to powerful magic would cause her problems - Il certainly noticed and was amazed by her casual use of high-level magic - but for some reason this turned out not to be an issue. Il was never once suspicious about this woman running a cafe for fun in a mostly deserted area, and no one seemed the slightest bit worried about a powerful magic user suddenly appearing out of nowhere.

The other tiresome thing about this series is that it once again pits two female characters against each other - Tsukina is one of two saviors in this new world, and the other savior is a spoiled teenage girl who uses her status as savior to take advantage of everyone around her. She's constantly depicted as awful, probably because, if she weren't, it might occur to readers that Tsukina is almost as useless a savior as she is. Neither one of them has any interest in doing the job they were transported to this world to do. Although, really, what were either of them supposed to accomplish? It seems like this world was doing just fine on its own until God dropped a ticking time-bomb of a spoiled teen into it.

The romance was...okay. Nothing terribly exciting or interesting so far, but I did enjoy Il's seriousness and slight awkwardness, especially when Beorc entered the picture and caused a little trouble.

The character designs were attractive and the artwork was okay, except that the illustrator seemed to have trouble with feet/shoes and horses.

Knowing me, it's quite possible that I'll try another volume, and also the light novel if it's ever released in English, because it's easy fluff and I foolishly hope that series like these will get better. Still, right now this doesn't seem to be one of the better female protagonist isekai series.

Extras:

A bonus story (text, not a short manga) called "Tsukina's Routine," set prior to the start of the series. Its only purpose is to further establish Tsukina as a woman who's uninterested in sacrificing her hobbies and comfort for a boyfriend and kids. A woman after my own heart, honestly. I really wish this series were more interesting.

I had an inkling I would enjoy this manga, and I was happy to be proven right. It’s a charming introduction to a story that I think could potentially develop into something that I fully love and I look forward to reading more volumes!

If I was about to be isekai-ed to another world, it would most definitely play out the same way for me like Tsukina. I would not want to go, so many questions and wanting everything to be just so! This volume had me from the VERY beginning! I will be picking up volumes as soon as humanly possible!

Read this because of my bestie on insta (love you @xdreamypisces ) and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! It’s so cute but at the same time has some fantasy elements that are really cool. I like how the author combined the romance and the fantasy together while keeping it lighthearted.

I’m an older weeb, blerd, Otaku, whatever you want to call it. I enjoy shōjo And shonen manga, but I also crave stories aimed towards an older crowd like myself.

Also, being the HUGE manga lover I am, I lost it when I saw a new release centered on a book cafe! That’s like every manga lovers dream, at least for me. Especially since the main character is a women in her 30s. Finally I can relate.

This story takes place in a world called “Othello” which rolls off the tongue nicely, in my opinion. A woman named Tsukina gets transported there after a "god" tells her that she is to become its savior, Tsukina isn't interested. As a bookish thirty-something, she has zero desire to go on some big adventure. I mean her life is already established after years of hard work you know?...So when she arrives in the strange new land, she decides to use her magical powers to create a cozy little book cafe instead. But when a fellow "savior" starts causing trouble, Tsukina might just have to play the hero, after all!

I know I would like this story, but I didn’t expect to LOVE it as much as I do! The first thing I did once I finished it, was checking to see the next release date, which is in May. Please give this mangaka and story some support so we can continue to have more Josei tittles that are relatable released / and created. If we show they are are wanted and in demand, then we can hopefully convince publishers to put out more.

Wow, this woman is literally living my dream life!

I've been watching a lot of Isekai Anime lately and have kinda been neglecting reading, so in order to find a happy middle-ground, I've decided to start reading manga.

I'm really excited to continue this series - OP Isekai stories are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

How fresh and lovely to see an adult woman as the protagonist, a wise and responsible one too!

My only gripe was the time skip, I don’t like it when it’s like "I met him, and [insert time period] later i started having feelings for him." :/ show, don’t tell!

Looking forward to see where it’ll go! I do wish that the younger savior would be flushed out well and not just a comparison tool to show how good our main character is.(SPOILER/update: she was just a tool… and the way everything was resolved was so anticlimactic and rushed ugh)

P.S: this cover isn’t doin it. I don’t like the poses.

Perfect for all of us 90s kids!

When I saw the description for this book, I hit that buy button so fast my bank account probably got whiplash.

I have never felt as seen in a book character as I have by the protagonist and heroine of The Savior's Book Cafe in Another World. She's over 30, feels that starting over in a new world is too troublesome at this point in her life, doesn't want the work of being a "hero" since that's a job for young folks, and dreams of owning a book cafe. Yes? Hello? You rang???

The book has such a sweet start and does a great job of establishing the heroine's drive and personality. The love interest of the series also shows up fairly quickly, so as a reader we get a good feel for him as well within this first volume.

Their interactions are sweet and charming. It leans into that idyllic lifestyle dreamed of by the heroine. I am absolutely looking forward to see how their romance develops!

With regards to plot and climax, the last chapter of the book introduced the first "challenge" our heroine will face, and the general concept of how she can overcome it. It left of with a strong feeling of anticipation and I've already preordered both volumes 2 and 3!

This book nailed it! My hope is that the manga volumes do so well that Seven Seas picks up the novelization of this series as well to bring over. I want as much of these characters and this plot as I can get!

Absolutely yes, I want to sit down and read a book about a 33-year-old woman who doesn't want to go to a fantasy world to become it's Savior because she wants to stay at home and read but goes anyways to open up a book cafe in the middle of nowhere so she can read and sip tea and only intervene when absolutely necessary in this fantasy world. Yes, I want to read that.

I can't believe I didn't pick this up sooner! What is wrong with me. Also, can we talk about her adultish response to "God" when it was making her go to Othel. Lol cracked me up, "yes I will go but I need X,Y, & Z and no shinanigans". I absolutely love Tsukina, I vibe with her, I want to be her. Give me a magical book cafe in a wintery mountain with little visitors but still can live off life, please and thanks!

Next volume here I come!

I'm finding that when trying out new manga series, I should probably plan to read the first 3 volumes in one go. I enjoyed the premise of this, the characters and world were decent, but we just don't get deep enough into the plot for me to rush out and read the next volume.

I will try and read the next few books, to see if that motivates me to keep going.

This was an entertaining read all the way through.
I did however find that the romance pacing is too fast. It’s missing some key elements to how romances typically form. They just went from acquaintance/friendly but not quite a friend/business relationship to straight hugging and the guy being jealous/protective. No build up. I found it weird and too fast.
