Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.
His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Oh boy. So it wasn’t too bad. I actually enjoyed reading it.
There were so many of these chapters that were so random and did absolutely nothing to the plot except waste your time.
The thing that bothered me most was that there wasn’t a single person in this entire book who was a good example let alone a decent person. I was disgusted by most of the characters. They all had super messed up morals. They all had messed up love lives, if there was any love at all, more like greed lives. I know stuff back then was different but it still hurts to see how poorly people were treated. Especially women. What really got on my nerves though was how straight up dumb some of the characters were. Like all they did was make dumb decisions after dumb decisions.
Ok but for old literature it’s pretty good. The way Tolstoj describes stuff is pretty cool. It’s very cool to hear his thoughts and wonderings of the world through fictional characters. I loved learning more about life back in old Russia. Very interesting.
I also know that I can’t compare this book to any other novel from nowadays, because the criteria has to fit multiple things including the time it was written in. But it is undoubtedly a masterpiece of its time. And Tolstoj none other than the artist.
