Rate this book
Makoto Takatsuki is a normal high school student and a hardcore RPG player. However, “normal” goes out the window when his whole class is involved in a bus crash and whisked away to another world!

Powerful gods rule this strange new land of magic and monsters, and every newcomer is blessed with strong stats and unique skills. Well, not quite. Makoto’s stats turn out to be pathetic, and his skills are super weak compared to his classmates’...he’s even stuck as an apprentice mage. Worse still, he’s given only ten years to live!

Luckily, Makoto soon meets a minor goddess named Noah, who appears in Makoto’s dreams and asks him to become her first believer. With the help of Noah's blessings and a divine weapon, Makoto seeks to become strong enough to rescue his goddess from the dungeon where she’s been trapped. By training hard and using his weak skills in unorthodox ways, Makoto proves that even when playing on hardcore difficulty, an RPG player always makes it to the end!

I feel like this was pretty standard for the genre. I loved the reverse kirito vibes where instead of being over powered and unstoppable our hero is kinda just basic but has to use that to his advantage. I will say at times this def feels like an adult writing how they think a child talks and it took me a bit to over come that but I really loved the unique way you watched the basic stats and skills like calm mind be used in creative ways. It’s a story that says you don’t have to be this crazy overpowered gifted person to still make a difference.

Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers: Volume 1 by Isle Osaki

A comfortingly familiar—if not especially daring—isekai that delivers clever underdog fun and RPG world logic, but is let down by mechanical female characterization and its reluctance to move beyond fan-favorite tropes.

Premise & Worldbuilding: Volume 1 briskly sets up its isekai credentials: a high school class disaster, a transport to fantasyland, and a world run by squabbling gods looking for followers. Makoto, the protagonist, pulls the short straw—not only does he have pathetically weak stats, he’s publicly rejected by all major deities. Ostracized as useless, he becomes the lone believer of Noah, a forgotten “minor goddess” with no other followers and a whiff of divine mystery. This starting point is both a promise and a narrative engine: Makoto is on hardcore difficulty, so every triumph feels earned—even when the odds (and stats) are stacked against him.

Characterization & Themes: Makoto’s greatest strength is persistence. He responds to constant underestimation with steady self-discipline—building up his abilities through creative tactics, manipulating terrain, and never quitting despite setbacks. There’s plenty of genre comfort in seeing the downtrodden protagonist outwit his “stronger” former classmates and powerful monsters, often through gamer logic and strategic use of his “weak” water magic. He feels less like a Chosen One and more like the guy who just read the manual and grinds harder—and that’s most of the series’ charm.

Yet this underdog satisfaction is undercut elsewhere. As many readers note, nearly all the female characters (including the goddess Noah) are written as one-note infatuates or comic relief, their actions more about increasing Makoto’s confidence or creating harem energy than about developing their own arcs or concerns. The result is wish-fulfillment that veers into cliché and, at times, cringey repetition.

Writing & Structure: Osaki’s tone is light, brisk, and occasionally witty. The book resists stat-sheet overload, opting instead for simple system explanations and action interludes—making it accessible to readers who like RPG elements but don’t need a dungeon-crawler’s spreadsheet. While the dialogue and worldbuilding aren’t standout, the pacing keeps things moving, and there are enough fair twists (especially near the end) to hint at deeper mythic intrigues and possible future growth. The use of pragmatic water magic and “tactical top-down view” showcases constant low-key creativity rather than heroic high drama.

Weaknesses: The story’s engagement depends on your tolerance for genre routine: Makoto’s progression, while engaging, feels safe, and there’s little subversion or risk outside the protagonist’s grind. The book’s handling of gender dynamics—girls exist almost solely to moon over Makoto—will frustrate anyone hoping for richer interpersonal drama or meaningful female agency. A few world logic oddities (how “secret” skills are public knowledge etc.) show plot expediency sometimes trumps internal coherence.

Comparative Note: For fans of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? or Mushoku Tensei, this series offers another slice of isekai comfort food—one with more low-level grinding and less edgy ambition than the genre’s standouts. Those who enjoy “clever underpowered MC” stories will find much to like, so long as expectations for innovation and maturity are tempered.

If you've read many isekai lite novels, this one will be a standard but enjoyable experience. There's something fairly satisfying about picking up a book that delivers exactly what you expected.

You'll find the typical tropes here. A bus full of high school kids breaks down in a snowstorm while returning from a ski trip. Rather than simply dying from exposure, the kids wake up in a new land with magical abilities and skills. There's also a pantheon of deities who are eager to recruit new followers. In typical lite novel fashion, our MC, Makoto, ends up with abilities that are extremely weak compared to his classmates. While they are scouted and recruited by various organizations, our MC is left alone to find his own way.

A hardcore RPG gamer in his previous life, Makoto can't resist the lure of becoming an adventurer despite his weak stats and low-level water magic. Being a freelance outworlder, he catches the attention of a goddess of the old order who has zero believers. After being ignored and dismissed by representatives of the other gods due to his low stats, he decides to take this goddess up on her offer to become her acolyte. And so begins his adventure to grow stronger.

This was a pretty fun palate-cleanser and I'll probably check out Book 2. Hard to say how deep into the series I'll go. I guess it will depend on how much the story continues to lean on tropes I've seen a half dozen times or whether it distinguishes itself.

Makoto and his classmates get into a car accident when their bus is swept of the road by an avalanche. On death's door, a goddess picks them up and drops them in a sword-and-sorcery wold, or at least those that were about to die. Everybody got powerful skills except Makoto, but his life expectancy is limited to ten years unless he does good deeds and earns experience by slaying monsters. So he is forced to leave the safety and deal with his weak skills. When an unknown goddess begs him to become her acolyte, he is still suspicious, but decides to accept the offer for she is the first person to acknowledge he is not useless. And with that he sets his first few steps in the new world.

The story is fairly typical slice-of-life adventurer story . The MC is somewhat weak, but works around it by using terrain and lesser skills to his advantage. It is the kind of story I like. The world appears to be fairly straight forward for the genre as well, but near the end a few things are reveals that add some mystery and potential depth to the world.

At the same time there are a few minor inconsistencies, nothing to distracting, but still raised my eyebrows a few time. Dying of cold while the teacher can walk around on the return of a ski trip for example is odd. You would expect there to be warm clothes in the bus, although I suppose those might have been difficult to reach. The soul book being considered secret, and yet it is shared left and right and everybody knew the skills of the high schoolers is another example. The "MC is weak and yet not" trope was played up a bit too much for my taste. If his skills were normal, then why do not more people use them? And finally, that RPG skill tactical top-down view and automatic mapping aspect is most definitely not weak and while I can understand a high schooler missing the implications, any general worth their salt would not.

Still, I enjoyed the story. It is the type of tale I enjoy and the ending added enough of a twist that hooks me to the next volume.

Makoto was a high school boy who loved RPGs to the point that when his class was stranded in a bus accident during a blizzard, he spent his last moments with his favorite game . . . and then woke up in a fantasy world. But it's not at all the answer to his earnest wish: he's got stats lower than a young child, mostly-marginal skills, and has nothing going for him except his gamer mentality.

So I'm torn about this story. I like the bits that focus on Makoto, as he's got an eclectic collection of skills that he has to apply cleverly. Like his magnificent level of control over water magic still doesn't mean squat when he doesn't have the mana to cause bigger effects even with a ready source of water nearby. A lot of his strategy is simply luring enemies to a place that allows him to use his meager abilities to the fullest. And Calm Mind is the cornerstone of everything he does.

Then there's Lucy. I don't like Lucy. She (and every other female) would be a decent enough character if every interaction with Makoto didn't somehow turn into this awful "please love me" creeper vibe. She has no confidence in herself and makes up for that by trying to drag Makoto in any and every way possible. But I can't say that this is her fault as much as the author because every girl ends up going after her guy the same way. They ALL seem to have no life goals other than getting into someone's pants.

I really wish all the girls didn't read like a high schooler's fantasies. Their characterization and any good traits are pretty buried by this crap. And there COULD be better characters there, as the pieces are in place.

I do like how Makoto isn't taken in by them, especially the goddess. He's figured out by the end his role in her plans, at least as far as it's possible to see right now, but he's also willing to go along with it because it aligns with his own goals. And right now that just means gaining power (and lifespan) as an adventurer. But eventually he means to challenge one of the greatest dungeons in the world.

Overall, if you care less about how the book treats its female cast, or just like watching someone gradually build up his strength through clever tactics and not brute force, this was okay. I just wish I liked the overall package better. I rate this book Neutral.

If you’re a fan of series like Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Full Clearing Another World Under a Goddess with Zero Believers will feel comfortably familiar. Volume 1 introduces us to a protagonist who begins his journey as meek, weak, and frankly a little clueless—especially when it comes to social cues and interacting with girls.

The story follows his gradual transformation as he develops a self-imposed training regimen that pushes him beyond his limits. In the process, he encounters a goddess who, due to divine punishment, has been abandoned and forgotten by others. He becomes her sole follower, marking the beginning of an unusual bond and an offbeat but charming dynamic.

Tonally, the book strikes a balance between light-hearted humor and fantasy adventure. The protagonist’s airheaded nature, especially around female characters, can feel a bit overdone at times, but it adds to his naïve charm. He’s much more interested in planning his next adventure than understanding the people around him, which, while sometimes frustrating, is consistent with his character and leaves room for growth.

As an introductory volume, it lays decent groundwork: it doesn’t reinvent the isekai wheel, but it offers enough heart and potential to warrant continuing. Hopefully, future volumes will build on the protagonist’s character development and deepen the world’s mythology.

A solid start, if not particularly groundbreaking. 3 out of 5 stars

ALC 🎧 Book Review 🤍

⭐️⭐️⭐️

- A “weak” MMC
- A water Goddess w/ 0 followers
- A fire mage w/ strong uncontrollable magic that requires a 3min incantation?

It’s giving Konosuba lol.

The storyline is your basic isekai, but I did enjoy the banter w/ the characters.
It just wasn’t anything new, but would I read the sequel? Probably.
A bit curious to see where this story takes us, but I hope the sequel gives me more originality though.

Kaipo Schwab did amazing narrating— Such an enjoyable LitRPG narrator.

Thank you to Netgalley for the chance to listen to this audio version of the book.
Makoto Takatsuki, a high school student, is involved in a bus accident and transported to another world! A world where the lifespan is ten years, but he can extend it by ki**ing monsters, just like in a video game. He and his classmates also gain some powers, and Makoto can control water... pretty cool. We started this journey with a 15-year-old kid who doesn't excel at anything, but has the courage to face monsters, to make magical creatures his friends. It was fun and i hade a good time with it

this is the first time i’ve finished a light novel, but i’ve read a lot of manga so the tropes were familiar. it was kind of just generic isekai slop (i mean that lovingly), so im sure superfans of the genre would enjoy it but i don’t think ill read on with the series.

the audiobook was decent and the narrator did a good job, even though his voice wasn’t exactly giving teenager. there’s so much internal monologue that it made it a good choice for an audiobook.

This was my first light novel audio book. I really enjoyed it! I love isekai animes so this was literally perfect for me. If you love isekais please give this a try.. The narrator did a great job and it was super easy to follow. It was a light hearted fast read and I really want book 2 now haha. I would say to give this one a try if you like audiobooks and animes such as Arifureta, Tensura, Tsukumichi, etc.

If I weren't read the WN version of this series first, then I would have rated this book 3 star. But hey, though started off slow and clich, but it gets better through time, and the author is really good at describing introspection of the characters. So guys, just hang in there and continue to read for Volume 2, 3, maybe more, and you guys will definitely be surprised.

Pretty good read

It took a bit for me to get into this one, but once I did I found it engaging. I really don't like how weak the main character is. I really wish I could find a read about a swordsman everything is about magic this or magic that or oh they where a great assassin. Oh well whatever this is pretty good I can't wait to see what happens next.

It is a nice RPG-type isekai with a lot of inspiration from Greek mythology and the MC is crafty but he has that cliche dense personality with not understanding how strong he really is compared to others. I still recommend reading it if you want a book to tie you over while you wait on another book's release.

To be honest, there's nothing all that interesting about this book, but I still found I liked it. It was a fairly boilerplate isekai light novel with rpg elements, but it was overall well done and worth reading.

LitRPG Lite Reading

An interesting start to a lit RPG ideal story without a spreadsheet of stats every chapter, and a protagonist that has to work for his wins. I'm having fun with this one so far. Definitely recommend if this is a genre you enjoy.

Somewhere between fun isekai fluff and, "Oh no, don't go harem?" Reading an odd translation I'm not sure is official.

Можете проходити повз, тут нічого нового. Як почали з'являтися персонажі жіночої статі, то одразу стало зрозуміло, що герой буде типовий пасивний лузер.

This first volume of this series doesn't do anything to really stand out in a huge pack of other isekai, but it was entertaining enough to keep me reading without pause. I think it has potential to be a mindless fun romp.
