Scars suck. So does life as a circus freak when everyone stares but no one can make eye contact.
Being a fashion model-turned Navy SEAL, Leo “Skin” Ramsay is no stranger to people gawking at him, but since being injured on his last mission, those who do look, do so with revulsion. It seems the good woman and family he desires so much is no longer possible. Not when he’s damaged goods.
Being a high-powered executive in the family business wasn’t a given, and Mira is determined to earn her place at the table. Armed with a master’s degree in business from Harvard, Mira Canaveri is prepared for a career that was a lifelong goal. Or is she?
When business as usual turns out to be nothing like she studied, she finds a night of solace in the arms of a stranger that sees her worth beyond designer labels.
That one night gives Mira two reasons to gather the strength to leave and start over somewhere else. Only, her father and his business partner have no intentions to let her break their arrangement.
To save herself and her unborn baby, Mira will risk everything to come out of hiding and reach out to the beautiful, scarred man, hoping he won’t turn her away.
Leo doesn’t hesitate when the woman he’s been trying to find shows up looking for his protection. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe, but he’s just one man against a pair of well-funded CEOs.
It’s time to call in a few favors and hope that it’s enough.
This is a Romantic Suspense/Thriller, and this is the 8th book in the Waterproof: Navy SEALs series. I have not read any of the other books in this series before picking this book up, but I do think this book can be read as a standalone. I loved both the main characters. The romance (a one night stand turns into more) was very fast moving, and I really loved it. I was pulled into this book for the beginning, and I did not want to put it down. I finished this book in one sitting because I was so pulled into the story. I loved that both the characters had issues they were trying to work though, but it turns out that they just needed each other. This book had love, romance, heartbreak, action, and suspense which makes a great read for me. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher or author (Jo Chambliss) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Foolproof is book 8 in the Waterproof : Navy Seals series. This was such a great addition to the series. I have been waiting for Leo "Skins" story. Leo & Mira have a one night stand. Leo is recovering from an explosion that burned half his body. Mira is having issues working with her father. Mira finds out she is pregnant and goes to find Leo, and ends up on the run. They reconnect and Leo and his team help Mira. Things get intense and crazy from that point on. This was a fast moving book and I could not put it down. I can't wait for Commander O'Reilly's book!
I received a copy of this book Via NetGalley in return for my honest review
Foolproof (Waterproof SEALs #8) by Jo Chambliss is the second book I've read in this series, and the second book I've read by this author, but it reads just fine as a standalone. While it featured my two favorite romance tropes, wounded warriors and romantic suspense, it fell somewhat short of excellent for this reader, and it gets 3.5 stars.
The two primary characters, Leo and Mira, meet in a bar, where Mira is the only woman there not put off at all by the burn scars Leo received during an ambushed op and an explosion. His scars cover a good part of his left face and side. He's seriously depressed and rightly so, but after a chat and a one-night-stand with Mira, he goes out and gets his scars covered by tattoos, and is totally over his depression. Way too pat, way too easy, and way too simple for this reader, when compared to the many other wounded warrior novels I've read in the past.
Six weeks later, Mira discovers that her one-night stand has resulted in a pregnancy, and if that isn't trouble enough, her overbearing mogul of a father decides to sell her to another, much older mogul to unite their two companies, although Mira, who has worked for her father for years and thought that she'd be the one eventually running his empire, when she admits to being pregnant is then told that they'll arrange to have the fetus aborted. She manages to escape their clutches and goes in search of Leo while hiding out in seedy motels, using only cash and a false name--but, of course, when she finally finds Leo, he's thrilled about the pregnancy news, the two decide to marry so that marrying the chosen mogul is off the table, and Mira's father and his soon-to-be partner decide that killing Leo will bring Mira to her senses. From that point on, Leo's fellow SEALs and their wives, who, I'm assuming were featured in the first seven novels in this series, get involved, and the suspense ratchets up in what I can only call exactly what I expected, which was nothing new, the expected HEA ending and a leading clue at the end to whet your appetite for the next book in the series.
Ms. Chambliss is not a bad writer, and I did like the dual narration in this novel, but I don't think she brought anything new to this trope. I also felt that ridding Leo of his scars at the outset of the novel was the wrong move dramatically. Since his scars didn't bother Mira, or this reader, I thought that Mira loving him despite his scars, which I've always considered to be badges of honor, would have been a tad more effective. Foolproof isn't a bad read, but for this reader, it wasn't an exceptional one either.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review An instant-attraction/love trope story, with other immediate life-altering consequences, “Foolproof”, by Jo Chambliss (Hover Press) balances action with a romance which is both very sweet and steamy. Leo and Mira’s first encounter is compelling, with the wounded hero still dealing with his recently acquired scars and her invisible trauma. Their relationship is total insta-attraction, instant (torrid) sex, love and a few more immediate events. It’s a combination of sweetness, lust and sex, with the alpha gentle hero, super protective of the “damsel-in-distress” heroine. The fact Mira isn’t affected by Leo’s scars seems to play an important part in the recovery of his self-esteem. The author goes further lessening considerably the visual impact of the scarring and, whatever the intention, the effect is making the less-than-perfect hero less undamaged – and, in my opinion, reducing his appeal drastically. The brotherhood (and sisterhood) ties are strong and expand to include Mira (then again another instantaneous friendship). What I felt as needless was the frequent proclamation of their powerful ties and of the SEAL invincibility. The suspense plot is a bit convoluted for my taste. The main characters were more interesting in the beginning with all that mystery and chemistry, but things evolved into something more deep, although I felt sometimes that their amazing connection was more told than shown. I’m not a fan of the "instant-attraction” trope but this was done in a believable way although some dimensions might seem really very fast. The first person dual point of view is not one of my favorite options, too, but others will certainly like it.
I received an ARC of Foolproof in exchange for an honest review :)
Foolproof is book eight in Jo Chambliss' Waterproof: Navy SEALs series, and what an amazing addition it is!
The series follows a group of kickass Navy SEALs each finding their own happily ever afters, though not in what most would consider a "normal" way. As I expected, I loved this book even more than the previous one, which is becoming a trend with any book I pick up by this author.
Leo and Mira's story started with the hero struggling to come to terms with an injury he sustained in a previous book. One that's left him scarred and convinced that nobody would ever be able to look past the physical changes it's caused. The heroine, Mira, was dealing with her own demons as well. The two meet and things get heated pretty quickly, but the romance between the two was sweet (and steamy!) and once I got to the middle of the book, I felt my heart break for them as though I were the one going through what they did.
The story itself was fast paced and filled with enough action and romance to leave me on the edge of my seat, desperate to know what happens next. There are only a handful of authors that can make me devour a book in a single sitting and I'm so happy to say that Jo Chambliss has now been added to that list.
Aside from that I will add a trigger warning for miscarriage. It was gut wrenching and extremely difficult to read, but that's a testament to how well the author writes her stories.
A huge thank you to the author and Author Collective 20 for providing an ARC copy of this book ♥
I cannot wait for the final book in the series as well as any other books Jo Chambliss writes.
OMG! My heart felt hatred, fear, love, and tears, so many tears I was snot crying. The bad, I did not expect that, your killing me here. The good, even the good had me sniffling and my heart breaking. My heart felt like some one was pounding it with a meat cleaver and then trying to put it through the shredder. Shoot fire Jo what are you doing to me. I am not so sure how well I will handle the conclusion of the series with the commanders book. if you ripped me apart with this one!!! I do know I am thrilled there is a new series (please do not ever stop writing) and am excited for that to come. I highly recommend you read the whole series, and even the series before this. I recommend any book by this author, know that you will be part of war on forigen soil and domestic, SEALS after all. There will be heart felt scenarios, steamy, ok very steam scenes, strong women but most important of all, each book lets you know your alive. Romantic Suspense that kicks butt. Thank you Hover Press and NetGalley for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions and happily share them!
We meet Leo and Mira. Leo is on the SEAL team, and is recovering from burns after a mission gone wrong. He's always been the 'good looking' one on his team, and often would use his looks to his advantage to get his way with woman and is also a former model. After his accident, he's very closed off and insecure about his burns and meets Mira in a bar. She's the only person who doesn't look at his burns, but looks at him as a person. After they spend some time together, they have a steamy and passionate one night stand, and she leaves the next morning, on the run from her father, who basically treats her like trash.
Six weeks later, she discovers she's pregnant by Leo, and even though she's on the run, knows she has to go back and tell him and see if he will help her hide from her father and the man her father has promised her to marry to unite their two companies. When she finally is reunited with Leo, he has gained his confidence back, is really relieved to see her again, and she notices that he's gotten a tattoo to cover all the burns on his arm. After telling Leo and his team about the mess she's in and her father's plan to marry her off, Leo is thrilled about the pregnancy because deep down he knows he truly loves Mira and wants to be with her and his child. He proposes marriage to get her father off her back, thinking that will cause him to loose interest, but that only fuels the flames. This puts Mira and Leo in even more danger than before, and they have to come up with a plan to stay safe and to put an end to this so they can have their happily ever after.
There were some really surprising moments throughout this action packed book that left me sitting there with my mouth hanging open. This book definitely takes you on an emotional ride. I felt so bad for Mira on the run by herself and all the emotions she had to deal with before she reunited with Leo. I also loved Leo so much. He was such a stand up guy, he was so sweet and would do anything to protect Mira and his baby. There were parts of the book where I think Mira was trying to do the best to keep Leo safe, but it resulted in even more turmoil which was really sad to read through before they got their HEA.
The pretty party boy of the group, Leo/Skin has had it rough the last couple of books. Realising that there is more to life than one night stands he is deeply envious of what his team mates have found. Fighting attraction for his friend Ink’s girl initially then becoming best friends with Iyla who is with Judge, his deep melancholy grows. Till the accident that resets his life, changes all that he knows about himself and puts him on a path of self destruction. Skin believes that his most worthwhile parts are only skin deep, and that these were destroyed in the blast, Mira works hard to prove him wrong about this and so much more.
Luckily Mira comes along just in time with truth bombs that hurt but ultimately put Leo back on the right path. But then their night is over leaving both with a bitter taste on their mouth.
Their short “meet cute plus extras” aside, I liked how they were never far from each other’s thoughts right up to Leo realising not only could she be the one but she was in trouble. A strong determined female character, I liked Mira and thought her and Skin were a fantastic couple. Strength of character was Mira’s big plus here and despite finding herself in the most strange and dangerous of situations, her instinctive knowledge that Leo was her safe place, and what she would do to protect it, we’re emotional reads.
A jarring wrap up to this book as if the emotional roller coaster wasn’t enough, a sob fest hea for Mira and Leo but not for another well loved character…….
Leaving us like this is rather mean Ms C if you don’t mind me saying, I need to know how the couple we’ve become invested in throughout this series fare this rather momentous event.
I also note Knox and his band of hot and heavy hero’s make appearances here. Excited so much for their series…like off the charts excited!!
This is book eight in The Waterproof : Navy Seals Series and it is Leo and Mira's story and omg it is definitely a must read. While on a mission Leo got very badly burned and now with scars on his face, neck and arms he feels that nobody will see him for who and what he is inside and being a navy seal and with the help and support of his navy seal brother's and there family's he needs to realise that he is more than his scars and after meeting Mira and spending the night together it completely changed how.he feels. Mira has had one of the worst days as her father told her that she was useless and just a commodity to be used so she ends up having a drink in a bar and having a one night stand with Leo which changes her whole perspective on life so she decides to hide her time and then leave her father and the company and start her own life and live how she wants to but then she finds out that she was pregnant with Leo's baby but her father has other plans for her and somehow she needs to get away before her father takes away the one thing that she is not willing to lose and she needs to find Leo to tell him and also get some help. This Book takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and I cried so much and it broke my heart with everything that they had to go through so that they could be together and have the happy ending that they both deserve and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next and it was so addictive that I couldn't put it down. Jo Chambliss is an amazing author and writer and she certainly knows how to keep her reader's attention and I can't wait to read the next book in this amazing series.
Here is another exciting book as with the last one. This one again a man focused on possessing a woman and going to any lengths to get what he wants. The story opens with Skin still working at getting over the blast from the previous story. The blast has left him with scars from the burns and now at a bar that he goes to people who would normally talk to him walk away. At the same bar is Mira who that day found out by her father that she is really nothing to him and all the work that she had been doing it for nothing. He wants her to marry this man she had never met until today for their two companies to be together. Watching people leave his table she says something not realizing it was out loud and when she sees him she just sees the man. They end up going to his place and spending the night together, in the morning she leaves trying to figure out her life. She finds from her father she has no life, he wants her to marry this other man. Weeks go by and she finds herself pregnant trying to get a hold of skin she ends up back at her father's and then that night she escapes and goes on the run for a week before she ends up back at his place. From her, the team begins to figure out what to do. Even after the two of them marry it still does not end for her and she is finally taken by his thugs and flown to Vegas. From there you will have to read to find out the rest. The end of this book will be set up for the next one. I will say this was a hell of a page-turner, a very good book. I received this book from Netgalley.com
I love the Waterproof series for Jo Chambliss. Foolproof is book 8 in the series. This book can be read as a standalone, although some of the characters from previous books do feature here.
As I have mentioned in reviews for previous books, the author does not stick to one trope for her books in the series. As a result, books differ, and not all would be to everyone's taste.
I loved the story of Leo and Mira. Leo struggles to adapt to his new looks after a work incident left him with new facial scars at the start of the book. He and Mira connect at the right time for Mira to significantly influence how he views himself and the reactions of others. But Mira hides her own scars carefully - easy as they are emotional scars.
The middle of the book was a bit of a dead zone for me, leaving me disengaged. However, the latter part of the story is full of fast-moving action and heartbreak—a well done emotive read. I rooted for Leo and Mira's HEA. I did wish her father some additional comeuppance, though.
A word of warning, there is a section in the book that could be triggering for those with scars from a miscarriage.
Foolproof (Waterproof: Navy SEALs book 8) By Jo Chambliss
I have to say that this was one of my favorites in this series and definitely made the top 5 list. This is one of those sit down, shut up and hang on stories that will keep you up at night and now I have to wait for October to get Commander O'Reilly and Cassidy's story. Yes there are some who will say insta attraction is not good but in this story when you have two lost souls Leo "Skin" Ramsey who was injured in an op that went sideways and Mira Canaveri who wants badly to be respected by her father for her business skills and be able to take their pasta company profitably into the next decade. They meet for one night and then the life Mira had hoped for goes horribly sideways when her dad uses her as leverage for a rival company. One little tiny (hmm..a hint maybe) problem Mira will not go quietly with Lance nor will Leo give up finding her once he finds out what has happened to her.
Throw in the Admiral and O'Reilly's former SEAL teammate Knot who now runs a successful PMC company (I can't wait to see how these books turn out) and you have a race to the finish line with a teaser to the next book also.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley and Author Collective 20 in exchange for a voluntary and honest review.
Leo is a Navy SEAL and is trained to handle just about anything. What he wasn’t trained for was how to deal with falling in love. After having been severely burned on a mission he has been trying to get back out in the world and deal with people giving him looks and not being comfortable around him. Little did he know that the one woman who doesn’t see his scars at all is the woman sitting near him at the bar. Mira had thought that she had finally earned a spot of respect from her dad while working as VP for his company. She was sadly mistaken. After having the best night of her life with Leo she knows she has to leave him because her feelings for him were already so strong. Leo was broken hearted when he couldn’t find Mira after that one amazing night. He went to the bar every day looking for her so he is totally shocked to see her picture on the news saying she is missing. He is determined to find her and keep her safe. Mira is on the run from her dad and the man that is determined to destroy everything good in her life that she loves. Will Leo be able to help her and also not let her get away this time? I was given an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
If you have been following this series then like me you have probably been waiting for Leo (Skins) Ramsey's story He is the man brought up in the world of modelling that after a chance encounter at a photo shoot with a former military man decided he wanted more from life and became a Seal and member of the Wendigo team. What he hasn't been able to leave behind is the fact that everyone loves him only for his beautiful face and body. A face and body that was seriously burned during a mission now after all of his recuperation he is back with the team and he isn't handling it well not helped by the fact that all the woman that previously hit on him are now turning away A chance encounter with a woman in a bar makes him revaluate his life as Mira tells him not all scars can be seen. They have a wild night together but the next morning Mira leaves Now Skin is determined to find her but Mira has her own problems been used as a pawn in her fathers mad plans with another CEO (he is even crazier) Needing help she heads to Skin can he and his team keep her safe and will they have a future together You will have to read to see Now hanging out for Commander Timothy (Stone) O'Reilleys story
Foolproof is another great read in the Navy Seals series. From the start full of action, Thrills and spills that take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Great characters that have depth and personality. Leo ‘skin’ Ramsey has been severely burnt on a mission that has left him with physical and emotional scars. Mira Canaveri has worked as a successful executive in her fathers business or so she thought. When he brings in a new business partner he makes it clear he thinks she is useless and she is to kowtow to this partner in her business and personal life. Upset with this she ends up in a bar where she meets Leo. Instant attraction leads to a night together that ends with Mira becoming pregnant. As it becomes dangerous for Mira to stay with her father she runs away. And so the real action begins with Leo and the team going all out to protect her and the unborn baby. Unscrupulous characters that are not afraid to kill and cause horrific damage. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, page turning and jaw dropping with very little let up in the action and emotions. My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
I had not read a book by this author, but now that I have, I will have to read the pervious seven books! I loved everything about this book, the strong and dedicated characters, the page turning story and the romance, suspense and danger. Navy SEAL Leo “Skin” Ramsay was horribly injured during their last mission and has scars, both physical and mental. Meeting a woman named Mira at the local bar, they spend an amazing night together, both needing release from their problems. When she leaves in the morning, she has given him hope for his future. Mira Canaveri is employed at her father’s business, but becomes a pawn between her father and a man who plans to take over her and the company. When she learns that there is unexpected news from her night with Leo, she must tell him. Before she can, she is forced to return home, but that will not stop her from trying to escape and protect her baby. There is non-stop action and updates on previous characters – which I really enjoy! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
This was a fast paced adventure/suspense romantic read. I really liked both Mira and Leo. They came across as strong, independent and loyal characters. Yay for Mira going against her father’s wishes! I also love gruff military men who turn into marshmallows around children.
What was a little disappointing was while Mira was attracted to Leo with scars and all, Leo had the scars covered up with tattoos. Granted this is a personal choice (and those with scars might feel more comfortable covering them up), but it seemed part of the appeal of the story was that the h was attracted to the H with the scars.
There is some treachery afoot which provides some interesting twists to the story. I did find it a bit heavy on the “Rah, Rah, SEALs are the greatest” but it is a military romance so to be expected. I always enjoy this author's stories.
I received a free copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
I grew to love Leo "Skin" Ramsey as the stories progressed thru the 3rd Platoon at Fort Story and after his heartbreak in the last story I was really looking forward to him getting his HEA. Jo Chambliss did not disappoint. I started out a little concerned about the instalove that started out this story with Mira. Heck, they didn't even know each others last name until weeks later (thankful for Mira's great memory recall in being able to locate Skin's apartment). However the plot progressed into so many twists and turns you couldn't help but fall for these two and the family created over the last 7 books. Evan, OMG! Definitely worthy of the hero send off. Looking forward to Cass and Stone's story as well as Knot.
This is book 8 of a series and while you'll definitely enjoy the others, it is not required to read them first but after being introduced to these guys (and their ladies) you'll want to go back and catch up.
Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster. Saved the best for last with Leo and Mira. The pair share one night together which results in a pregnancy. But before Mira can tell Leo, her father and his business associate have other plans for her. She escapes and eventually goes to Leo for help. I normally am not a fan of surprise pregnancy romances, but this is so well written, I didn't mind it. The way Leo responds to the news is so perfect. And watching their emotional struggles as they battle the bad guys will keep you turning the pages long into the night. Don't expect much sleep with this one, it's too good to put down.
This was another excellent read for this series. A very heartbreaking read with no HEA. Leo (Skin) was badly injured on a mission. Now with what happened he doesn't think anyone can look past his injuries, but Mira is not like anyone else. She has her own problems with her father and things he does and says to her. They are both in for a wild ride and injuries to the team are rough to take. There's plenty of action, heat, death and the uncertain. Can't wait to read the next book to see how it ends. I just reviewed Foolproof by Jo Chambliss. #Foolproof #NetGalley
Wow! This book is non stop action from beginning to end and even then leaves us on a cliffhanger! This is an amazing series and it is wonderful to have the whole team included, it is an emotional roller coaster and I cannot wait for the next book. Great job Jo Chambliss, Skin and Mira’s story is brilliant!
Oh man this book wrecked me. I’ve loved every book in the series but this book beats them hands down. It was an emotional roller coaster. Skin has been through so much and the love he and Mira share was so special and well written, I’m lost for words how to describe it other to say that this is an amazing book and a must read.
I didn't think these stories in this series could get any better and I am definitely happy to say they do! This one was beyond great, it just doesn't stop with the non stop action or the trials and tribulations the Wendigo's go through! I for one am very happy with this series and I am definitely looking forward to reading Bulletproof.
Discovered Jo Chambliss through kindle recommended books that were similar. Binged the whole series in a week. The stories kept getting better and better. Each book leaves you wanting more.
Heart stopping at times. What an awsome book. To say more would risk spoiling it. I've loved every book in this series. They can be standalone but I recommend starting at the beginning.
Wow this one was even better than the last book. I win tears at the end of this one and I highly recommend reading. Looking forward to reading the next in this series.
Foolproof is the eighth book in Jo Chambliss’ Waterproof: Navy Seals series. This is a military romance thriller filled with danger, intrigue, fantastic characters, and great chemistry.
Not all scars are surface deep, some are soul deep and are harder to heal. When Navy SEAL, Leo “Skin” Ramsay and high-powered executive, Mira Canaveri meet they are both damaged and broken. Their attraction was instantaneous and in each others arms they found a moment of peace and the incentive to make a change for the better.
Now Mira is on the run for her life and that of her unborn child’s and she must turn to Leo for help. But can he protect Mira from her wealthy father and a well-funded CEO who want Mira for himself? Read it and find out!
This book was absolutely amazing. I couldn’t put it down once I started and it took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that I loved. Definitely the best, in my opinion, of the series.
All the books in this series contain a happily ever after and can be read as a standalone. However, reading it in order will give you a better appreciation for the characters and the series itself. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
