Buffy Summers is the last Slayer. Now in her 50s, she wages a one woman fight against the forces of darkness, who prey on humanity in the daylight unimpeded thanks to a magical catastrophe that has nearly blotted out the sun. The same disaster robbed Buffy of her friends and ended the Slayer-line, forcing her into an endless guerilla war. That is, until she stumbles across something she hasn't seen in a long time -- hope, in the form of a prophecy and the young girl who carries it.
I had high hopes for this, and while it's easily better than anything else BOOM! has put out for Buffy in at least a year or two, this isn't the book I wanted or needed. It's just another fanfiction AU, and not even one based off of the show continuity. This could have easily been established in a continuity with at least the show to make me care, but they didn't even try. They randomly selected names out of a hat to fill lines of dialogue. This reads like a story someone wanted to do, and then BOOM! was like "Oh make it Buffy!" The writing is pretty basic and average, so I'd give it a 2.5/5 as a casual reader. But as a fan? I'm tired of BOOM! refusing to publish actual Buffy content. This isn't the Buffy people love. It's lifeless, even moreso than the vampires in it. It lacks passion... Even if this isn't the book I want as a fan, I can't even say it's worth picking up because the overall execution is also pretty meh to bad. If BOOM! is committed to Buffy AUs, they need to at least make them well written and know how to please fans of the show. The In Every Generation novel is coming out soon, and while it has many (many) problems, you can at least tell the writer is a huge fan and wanted to have fun with it and write it for other fans. I didn't feel this here. At all. I'm always going to consume new Buffy content, but it's been a rough few years for the Buffster. Dark Horse went out with a fart and then a whimper, and BOOM! just hasn't figured out how to tell Buffy stories since. Fans deserve quality content they should care about. Anyways, no one is shocked that another Buffy comic is a miss. Sorry, folks. Maybe the meta actor Angel AU series will be better? (*sarcasm) Go reread some of the Dark Horse seasons instead when BOOM! finally gets around to reprinting them.
If people are writing AU storylines for Buffy comics, can I send them some awesome Fuffy fanfics that can be made into comics? This was an okay read for a first issue. The artwork wasn't the greatest though.
Wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this, but I actually really enjoyed it! Not a super big fan of the art style but I can get past it, it's not the worst I've ever seen. I really like the old, tired, bitter hero trope. Reminiscent of Old Man Logan, in a really good way. Can't wait to continue and see where it goes!
Kind of mixed emotions about this one. Seems like I am missing information. I have always liked the series and the comics that have followed, but I was totally impressed here. The art was just a little off in my estimation, and even the witty banter just a tad off. Still, I liked it enough.
This series seems to have the most potential (haha) of all the Buffy series so far. I did enjoy the obvious Richard Madded/Keeley Hawes Bodyguard reference. But I need some serious worldbuilding to make this work. And yes, I think they potentially (haha) can.
Buffy has been my hero since I was like 12, so like yes to aged Buffy. Yes to the Last Vampire Slayer. Yes to this world that exists with vampires and humans having treaties to live "peacefully" together.
Art is stunning and so visually stimulating that I just wanted to drink in the pages. As someone who was already convinced of the character, I didn't need a big push to accept the world and how things have changed since season 7, eh?
So it seems like I'm gonna read this at least once more before issue 2 comes out. Because I tend to zip through on a first read and I would like to give this one more absorption. But then yes, sister, you can borrow it. And then you can return it. Because I feel like there will be additional re-reads after that. 😁
I don't know where we stand. I thought this was also going to start at the end of the final TV season but go in a different direction. However, it seems to be a completely alternate universe and I don't know if I really want that. I already purchased the 2nd issue so I'll read it and decide from there.
Did you ever want Old Man Logan but with vampires?
Cause this is the result. And it's wonderful.
I get that people think this isnt everyone's cuppa tea. But it's AU. It's dark. And it works. It's the most stakes (heh, pun) Buffy has had in years. I loved seasons 8-11 but this has a sadness among it that works.
This may be the first comic that doesn’t neglect Giles’ importance in Buffy’s life and there is a particular scene that deserves 5-stars alone. 1-star was deducted simply because I didn’t care for everything else.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars for Goodreads - Quick, fun read. Solid start to The Last Vampire Slayer comic series! I enjoyed seeing an older Buffy and how she and the world has changed. I liked the illustrations.
Thessaly is annoying but I'm clearly Buffygen, so that's kind of the point this story is trying to make; I don't get it, it's not for me and that's OK. It's a solid 3/5 though.
The comic starts with 'Buffy Summers now stands . . . nearly 50 years after she was first called', so she's nearer 65 than 50 I think, if you do the maths, and I think that's pretty much how old she looks.
I really enjoyed all the Anya Buffy banter, that was fun. I liked the art, it's not top notch but it's still very good.
I'm also not convinced that Thessaly being Willow and Tara's daughter is a good move, but I'm staying open minded because I did really enjoy this first issue. But I also liked Booms first reboot issue, and look where that went.
