Formulaic and forgettable, and over the top sweet, but not really in a good way— more in a totally unbelievable, fake way. So it wasn’t bad, and I can totally get behind the no-angst, no-drama story. In an attempt to go for a hurt/comfort vibe, this book really amps up the house of horrors childhood tale. Sorry, but after going through all of that, a person would be more than just a little emotionally repressed (which in this case is quickly and easily healed through good sex). I actually really love the hurt/comfort trope, but it has to be carefully balanced. Because as much as I like hurt/comfort tropes, I really hate “magic sex cures everything” stories.
So if you’re here for complete escapism sugar coma, you’ll probably be fine. Just don’t expect to come away remembering the characters or the story a week later.
