The Switch #1

Strictly Business

Rate this book
Lies and attraction abound when a savvy businessman posing as his twin and an oil baron’s niece battle over a family farm in this steamy romance from New York Times bestselling author Ruth Cardello.

I just found out I have an identical twin. Wasn’t looking for one. Would have preferred to not have one, but here we are. We have nothing in common. I was adopted by a successful businessman who raised me to see life as a game and gave me the skills to win it. Him? He is about to lose his family’s farm. You heard me—farm.

Lucky for him, I’m a firm believer that when it comes to family, no one goes to battle alone. I’m in. I’ve switched lives with him and will use every business trick I know to save his farm.

However, my initial plan did not take into account a drop-dead gorgeous oil rep or the secrets I uncover about my brother. And worst of all, I’m starting to like the farm and all its inhabitants. I can’t stop thinking about that oil rep. This will definitely take longer to resolve than anticipated.

it’s a book about two people meeting and falling for lust at first sight. I struggled with this book a lot as I failed to understand what the main characters saw in one another and why they acted a certain way.
I couldn’t even get myself to finish the book 😖

First Impressions
I received a gift box from the author who reached out to me and sent me the physical copy of Ruth Cardello. I was so pleased to be sent this, and it made me so happy and it was full of goodies. I was more than excited to grab this one up, this is one of my favorite contemporary authors, and I am a bit biased as her books got me back into contemporary romance. Her books will always deliver for me and I absolutely adored Strictly Business. It was such a delight to read and it just had everything that I love in a small town romance. It was a bit different, and it definitely have Ruth Cardello’s flair for writing that is always so delightful to read and she had me laughing all over the place and with just the right touch of heat to deliver a strong solid romance. While its not a perfect book, it was such a beautiful distraction.

Summary
Our story starts our with our hero, Jesse who is a twin. He runs a profitable business and is working with NASA, but then his twin comes to him and asks him to do a trading place in their lives for a short time. Jesse loves his brother and family is everything to him, and agrees. But working on a farm is not his dream and he is out of his element. Then he meets the gorgeous oil representative who is trying to get the farm to sell….Crystal. Crystal is a professional taste tester and works at a company where they attempt to refine flavors to be more palatable but then her uncle approaches her to work a side job for him and try to convince a farmer to sell to him. Her side job isn’t as simple as her uncle made it sound. Because when she meets the farmer Jesse, she is shocked by the level of attraction that she feels toward him. Jesse and Crystal are working for opposing parties in this venture, and they know a romance entanglement is a dangerous because if they get involved they risk betraying their families and those they care about the most. But as Jesse and Crystal explore their relationship, they know what they have is real and is worth fighting for…

What I Loved
Strictly Business was a superb read that I fell head over heels in love with. First off, we have this wonderful setting of a coastal farm with all the awkward farm animals that need some extra love and attention. Then we have a bit of a enemies to lovers/Grumpy-Sunshine trope that add some unique twists to the mix. And to top that off, we have twins switching places and not being the most honest to their ladies. This is definitely packed with characters that are completely out of their element, and learning to adapt to changed environments while finding love along the way. This book was amusing from beginning to end. I have always been endeared by the wit that Ruth Cardello places in her stories, and its no different for Strictly Business and I adored seeing the way that the growth of their relationship form. There is a bit of back and forth, but it didn’t bother me too much like it normally would. I believe the style of the way its written, is what kept me engaged and wanted to see what would be the catalyst of Jessie and Crystal coming together. It was intriguing to see their chemistry and their attempts at dating. Their chemistry is off the charts and I really was charmed by the mix of blindfolds and food that are blended into the romance. I was smiling the whole way through these moments that added a country like charm to the story. There is a level of human feeling in this story and It was so easy to become invested in the story and what it conveys. The ending of the story was perfection and I can’t wait for the twin’s book because he is in for a fight for his girl.

What I Struggled With
Not many aspects I had a hard time, the pacing felt a bit off for me. I might have had too high of an expectation on this maybe? I am not sure because I never struggle with this author, or it definitely could have been my mood as well as I have become such a mood reader of late. But once I got to the second half of the story, it really pulled me into the story.

Overall View
I found Strictly Business to be a delightful mix of sexy and wit, its a story guaranteed to knock your socks off. The romance will endear you into laughs, swoons and small smexy moments to win your heart! A WHIRLWIND OF A ROMANCE

What a whirlwind story!

This is the book of Jesse, a cold businessman, who takes his twin brother's place in order to deal with an oil rep who wants to buy his farm. Crystal is sent by her uncle to leave the buying proposal but things take turns. Clue in a big secret that both Crystal and Jesse try to keep from each other in order to act on their families' interest.

I felt this was all full of twists, because there are a lot of characters that get in the mix and a lot of scenes unfolding. It is all very nicely written and while it didn't take my breath away it was definitely enjoyable.

What I loved the most is how the author pictured the love story, how skillfully she mastered for both of the characters to stay honest to one another while keeping secret details. I liked how lovely, caring and, naturally, reserved Crystal was, such a dear heroine. And I liked how in charge and creative in his quest to impress her Jesse was. Their comings together were absolutely explosive!

All in all it was a great story. While the romance shone brightest there are interesting themes threaded here, like the twins personalities and the nature versus nurture idea, the importance of Scott's discovery, the endearing moments with the rescued animals, great themes woven into these pages.

I received this in order to offer my personal view on it.

Another wonderful book from Ruth, that can only lead to a brilliant series.
Excellent characters and some awesome moments, both entertaining and a little tense.

Loved Jessie’s character, even though he’s a pretty tough and strong man in business he’s affectionate with Crystal.
Don’t get me wrong, they have their moments and it’s not smooth sailing by any means, but it’s a beautiful story.
One of beginning a relationship and sticking with it to the end, learning how to understand people and loving them wholeheartedly.
Excellent reading.

The main character does indeed come across as an ass with how he behaves and treats animals as he did not seem to know much or care much about them.

Like others, I did not see what the entire logic is in this lustful meeting when Jesse switches places with Scott in order to get rid of the oil rep who actually used his niece to do it for him. She appears to be ‘hot’ but she acts like a nerd so you can see how the plot from a glance sounds interesting however I found there to be no logic, not much thought was written in this as you are just left kind of confused at their first encounters for them to feel that way towards each other. It is as if the author has presumed we should already know when in reality authors need to take the reader through each step in how they got so lustful towards each other. I mean, is that not the best part, the journey of how they even became attracted to each other? Yet this novel just skips out on it which is disappointing.

I did try to enjoy this, I just can’t lie about a poorly written piece of work.

Thank you to the publishers for this novel in exchange for my honest thoughts.

This is the first book in a new series with a big start of setting the bar quite high.

Mistaken or fake identity is always something that I’m looking forward to read in romance stories. And this one touched quite a few topics while at it. I loved the instant lust and falling into love between them. The banter and chemistry were there at all times, and the steamy scenes set fire to those initial sparks.

Their dialogues about families and past and regrets tugged at my heart, but I loved how it made them so much lovable and beautiful souls.

Crystal and Jesse might have started that relationship with a fake step, but they worked through it all with building trust and love in the end.

A must-read new story from an author that everyone should try.

DNF @68%

I can see the appeal of hot twin brothers switching roles but there was just a chunk of the storyline that was missing that made the story lacking. Also, the narration was so bad it ruined the book for me. Wasn't dedicated enough to find out the end results.

Old friends. New intrigue. Unpredictable romance. Strictly Business has the where with all to keep you guessing while tempting your senses and stealing your heart. Cardello stirs up a bit of suspense while pulling the ultimate con. Crystal and Jesse are not always easy to like, yet somehow they barrel themselves deep under your skin and take up residence within your soul. From captivating to aggravating, there's never a dull moment.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review.
I have become a fan of this author and look forward to each new book. I liked this one, newfound twin brothers, now switch lives so the businessman can help the farmer. You think it will be a simple task but the woman thrown into the mix is going to still Jesse's heart.
Jesse has to figure out why someone wants Scott's farm so bad. He also has to learn to be a farmer and take care of the animals. What was supposed to be for a day or two, turns out to be longer because Jesse has found that farm life is growing on him and so is Crystal.
Crystal was sent to Scott's farm to deliver a new proposal for the farm, that is all she had to do. When seeing the man something inside stirs. She has never had these feelings before.
What happens when Crystal learns who she thinks is Scott? What will Jesse do when he learns what Crystal is sent to do? Can Scott tell him the truth about the farm?
I liked this story a lot and can't wait for Scott's story. This one is filled with banter, fun, crazy farm animals, suspense, lost family, and finding love. Another great start to a series worth reading.

Have you ever pretended you're someone else? It's not always easy, when you're twins it's supposed to be easier. You look the same, sound the same, and people have a hard time telling you apart. For Jesse, it's a little harder to pretend to be his twin Scott, they only just learned about one another. They were adopted to different families when they were babies and grew up practically opposite.

Scott's farm is in trouble when Jesse learns that an energy baron is sniffing around and trying to pressure a deal he thinks it's won't be hard to pretend to be his twin for a few hours to deal with it. Things turn complicated when Crystal shows up to bring the offer, she's doing a favour for her uncle and doesn't know what she's getting into. Crystal is not at all what Jesse was expecting and that throws him even more off his game. The awkwardness between them only grows the more they spend time together, especially once they start to give in to the attraction between them.

This was a great kickoff to a whole new series by Ruth Cardello. Even though it's a new series readers get a cameo through a crossover, it's nice to run into someone familiar, even with a new setting. The characters have room to breathe and we get to see both our main characters gain some depth as the story progresses. I can't wait to see the other side and find out how Scott did while pretending to be Jesse.

This was not great.
The romance? Very insta-love. They met and couldn't keep their hands off each other after that. The worst was their PDA and how cringe it was. It wasn't, "Awww they're cute." It was more of so inappropriate that it felt off and made everybody, including the reader, feel uncomfortable.

Jesse as a character was not fleshed out at all. We are told about his harsh demeanour and how he is the opposite of Scott but we never see it! So pray tell, how are we supposed to react when he acts all sweet and gentle with Crystal when we don't see any other side to him throughout the story?

The plotline? What? The concept is interesting but the execution was a hot mess in the sense that there wasn't one. What on earth was the result of all of it? That last scene where everyone was together made no sense. I still don't know how they're going to manage the farm hereon out.

The brothers hardly ever talk to each other. I think they only spoke twice, once in the beginning and again at the end. Huh? Why is this story relying on side characters to deliver messages between the two brothers? Also, did they find out about each other in another book? Because good golly, the info dumping in the beginning lacked quite a bit of finesse.

The suspense? Non-existent. It was all done via rose coloured tinted glasses very Hallmark-like.

So excited for this new series from Ruth! Jesse has just found out as an adult that he has a twin that he was separated from at birth. While he grew up a ruthless businessman, his twin brother Scott grew up kind and forever looking at the good in people. But when a company is determined to get Scott to sell his family’s land and home, he asks Jesse to step in and ensure that there is no chance for that to happen. Through that company, they send out Crystal, who is just delivering the papers for him to review, and as she spends time with him, she starts to fall for him. The problem is that Crystal thinks she’s falling for Scott where she’s actually falling for Jesse, and things start to get messy as Jesse tries to separate the two. This was a somewhat sweet read, where we see that Crystal is somewhat of a pawn for her uncle, although he was quite strategic about things, and Jesse can actually help her to make her dreams come true herself. I can’t wait to get Scott’s story, because based on the end of the book it seems that the same thing happened to him while pretending to be Jesse!

Strictly Business is a clever story about twin brothers who were separated at birth and adopted by two very different families. Jesse and Scott only have been aware of their relationship for a short time, but the twin bond is strong and when Scott needs help Jesse steps in. The switch was to be a very short one, but fate has other plans. Ms. Cardello never disappoints and as always she plots her stories to include family, some warm, some more distant, high rollers in business, secrets, villains, romance that curls readers’ toes….and especially the need for honesty in the face of all the secrets. This basically is Jesse’s story, but I was happy to find hints in the last chapter that led me to think Scott’s story will be coming. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. Most highly recommend.

This is the start of a new standalone series from Ruth and I am very excited for the fresh plot and wonderful characters!

This story revolves around Jesse and Crystal! Jesse switches places with his twin brother to help him out but in the end he gets more than he ever considered!

This book is full of mystery and has you on edge because from the start you’re not sure on who to trust! As the plot unfolds some truths are revealed and the twists have you in shock, or at least for me it did!

Jesse and Crystal and wonderful characters and I love the characters growth that we see through the book! Can’t wait to see what the other books will be about!

This is such a fun and fantastic book. I was hooked from page one. Loved that when Jesse finds out about his twin, he switches place to help him. But what is his twin Scott hiding in his basement? How can Jesse resist Crystal? Laughed at how he pretends to be a farmer and impresses Crystal anyway. Loved their first date. Can they trust each other? Is she being used by her Uncle? So much to keep us guessing. Loved the sense of family and how they all interact with each other, it’s very heartwarming. Will they all take a leap of faith and trust each other? I loved this book so much and can’t wait to read Scott’s story. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book.

The first in a new series, this is a fun book. Jesse is pretending to be his newly discovered twin brother Scott, who is being hounded by an oil baron to sell his land. Crystal is the oil baron’s niece and is trying to close the deal, even though technically she doesn’t work for him and in fact, she is a brilliant flavoring. All of these seemingly disparate pieces eventually tie together in a well thought out and fun story. The romance aspect was sweet and I liked Crystal and Jesse together. I can’t wait to find out about Scott and his mysterious love!

Ooh what a read!

Jesse and Crystal - what to say... One started as arrogant and the other not so sure but soon it all changed. I liked their story in spite of them falling hard for each other within few days off their first meet!

The story line was interesting and the way it developed was good too. We will get to know more in the next in series.

Can't wait for Scott's book!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ "You and I shouldn't make sense, but when we're together, we're all that does."

What You'll Find:
✔️Billionaire Romance
✔️Hidden Identity
✔️Instalust/Love
✔️Fish Out of Water
✔️Dual POV

Strictly Business tells the story of a billionaire who poses as his twin brother to help save his family farm. Only he didn't expect to battle the oil baron's beautiful niece. And sparks sure fly at first meet. But there's much more going on with the farm than meets the eye, including secrets, lies and deception.

Jesse is a cold, yet savy, businessman. He's stern, goal orientated, never letting feelings into the mix. Crystal lives a predictable life. Working in the STEM field, she's intelligent, but not much of a risk taker. But when these two meet it is an attraction that has them coming out of their shells to explore what they are feeling. And from there it's a bit of a cat and mouse chase, that soon turns to steamy situations!

It was fun to watch to them grow into different, even better, versions of themselves as they explored their attraction. Jesse especially. I really enjoyed the farm setting, the animals, and how he grew to love the farm. He really was a fish out of water there. They both were. I thought this story was quite engaging, if a bit old fashioned, for lack of a better term. It moved from instalust, to instalove rather quickly. But it didn't stop me from turning the pages.

From action, to lust, to emotion, and steam... even some science too. There is a lot going on in this story. Having many side characters as well. All of which I think you'll see more of. Because there's some hints in the end for Scott's (the other twins) story and I think he's been up to more then he's let on! This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed it. Check it out on release day if this sounds like your jam!

"How does it feel?"

"Like something worth figuring out."

Crystal is a successful chemist who lives with her lab co-owner and best friend, Ellie. She is lonely, having lost her parents at the same time at a young age and having only her oil tycoon uncle as family. When her uncle asks her to visit a farm owned by Scott to see if she can convince Scott to sell or lease the land, Crystal goes out of a sense of family obligation.

It isn't Scott who Crystal meets on the farm, but his identical twin brother Jesse. Scott and Jesse have just recently learned of each other's existence after being separated at birth and adopted by 2 different families. Jesse thinks that Scott is into some trouble at the farm and insists he's going to pretend to be him to protect him from the interests of people like Crystal's uncle.

Despite both of their resistance, Crystal and Jesse can't seem to stay away from one another. They have to try to build trust between them despite the pressures being put on them by their families' competing interests.

This was the first book I've ever read by this author. It was good, but not the type of book that I couldn't put down or that I'd rave about to my friends. The plot was nicely layered and the characters likeable, but overall it was missing that spark that made me want to dive back into the story. The love story between Jesse and Crystal seemed both forced and also very rushed, which led to some eye-rolling on my part. Overall, I am grateful for the chance to read the ARC but won't be jumping to pick up any more titles by this author.

Jesse is convinced that the oil company trying to buy his brother’s farm is trying to perpetrate a ruthless swindle. And he’s the hard-nosed businessman, not his soft-hearted twin brother. So he takes his brother’s place for the negotiations.
The negotiator sent by the oil company doesn’t seem ruthless at all. Crystal’s beautiful, but seems unware of the impact her looks have on others. She’s capable, but not the calm, tough as nails person he expected her employer to bring to the fight.
He’s clueless about what it takes to run a rescue farm, or why the oil company is so keen to buy the property. And his twin is being extremely cagey about what he’s actually working on. When he discovers that the Crystal owns a hot shot lab, is actually a genius, and cannot be allowed anywhere near whatever it is that his twin is working on, he is even more intrigued and frustrated.
He just happens to be intrigued and frustrated by the gorgeous woman who’s supposed to be his enemy. After an unforgettable night, he can’t stop thinking about her. But their whole relationship is based on his deception.
This was a steamy, insta-love, enemies-to-lovers story with just the right dash of industrial espionage and scheming.

Jesse was separated from his twin brother Sam at birth and the completely different lives they have led have always led to very different personalities. While Jesse is focused on being a successful businessman who has little time for anything else Sam has put all his efforts into keeping his farm viable and will do anything for anyone. When his farm is being threatened Jesse pretends to be him so that he can ensure Sam can keep his farm and then they will both go back to their regular lives.

Crystal doesn’t have a lot of family, but her uncle has always been there for her so when he requests that she approach a farm owner and convince him to sell she can’t say no. What she hadn’t expected was to be attracted to the man or the secrets that stand between them.

This is a story about love and family that includes humorous interactions, a few surprises and two characters who draw you in.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the first book in a new series - and I am definitely looking forward to the next installment already!

The fun premise is that identical twins adopted at birth by very different parents have rediscovered each other. One has taken over the farm from his now retired and travelling parents, and the other is a hugely successful and ruthless businessman. The latter decides to save the former from losing the farm due to an oil company wanting to buy it. Little could we expect what transpires - it is fun, sexy, and has a rather lovely world-saving opportunity thrown in!

Crystal has been brought up by her wealthy uncle and had the opportunities to study and travel the world thanks to his generosity. So when he asks her to deliver some contract papers to a farmer he wants to buy out, she really doesn't think of declining. Meeting Jesse - who is posing as his brother - gives her an unexpected jolt of lust and desire. The fact that he doesn't seem very competent in the farm he is running is odd, but endearing.

The underlying plot is definitely a little out there. The warnings about not letting her in the house really have the reader wondering what could be going on, but in time we get the answers, the resolution of the business issues, and the consolidating of a relationship, we are invested enough to be happy at the outcome. There is some fabulous humour created due to the differences between the two of them, and yet they find the common ground too.

Fun, passionate, farm drama based romance.

Strictly Business by Ruth Cardello is a fun romance with a little bit of mystery and danger thrown in. I caught myself chuckling many times at the conversations the characters had with each other and within their own heads. I will definitely be reading more books by Ruth now.

I enjoyed the relationship the brothers had with each other, even the new twin, Scott. And the author left just enough tidbits that I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series; both Scott and Thane’s stories.

Crystal was a flavor chemist which I found to be very interesting. The chemistry between her and Scott/Jessie was off the charts. Crystal was someone you cheered for. She had insecurities but was brave enough to still go after what she wanted.

Violence – minor violence
Sexual content – a few physical scenes
Language – 4 the f word is used 37 times

I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

2 STARS

Uh yeah, no. I tried but this wasn't for me.

I was intrigued so I decided to try this one out but it just didn't work for me. I didn't like how easily they realized they love each other and how the storyline was executed. The plot seems interesting but it was all over the place.

This was supposed to be about Jesse and Scott who were separated at birth and the switch to save the farm but the story already started out on Jesse on the farm. I didn't get a glimpse of how they interacted when they first meet leading to Jesse suggesting the switch. Honestly, I think the twins hardly interact at all.

I was hoping Crystal to be a little feisty or snarky but I feel like she was too naive and soft for me. Jesse switched from being aloof to "like-you-love-you" way too easily. Actually, both of them were.

Honestly disappointed with this read. Though, good job to the author for trying though. There are a lot of 5 and 4 stars thrown in this book so that's that.

When businessman Jesse agrees to swap places with his twin brother the farmer, he gets more than he bargained for. Scott’s farm is under threat by an oil baron so identical twin Jesse takes on negotiations to save the farm.
Flustered Crystal arrives to negotiate. Not knowing the full reasons why her uncle wants the farm, she presents the papers to Jesse believing him to be Scott.

I may have made this sound complicated but it’s not, it’s very easy to read and follow.

This book is mostly about Jesse and Crystal, their complicated lives and how their relationship develops. A romance with an underlying mystery causing danger and intrigue.
I’m hoping this book is the introduction to a new series especially as Ruth Cardello readers will recognise the arrival of the Romano’s to the farm.
