Rate this book
Caught in the fallout of a rare disease, and members of opposing packs, Zander and Marrok’s future as fated mates hangs in the balance.

Alexander Kingston wasn’t destined to lead the East Territory pack, but fate had other ideas. Becoming the next Alpha in his dead brother’s place and managing his father’s expectations is a challenge, one that’s only getting harder with time. When his father, the Alpha is reluctant to accept outside assistance when one of their own is afflicted with a deadly blood disorder, Zander must take a stand against his father or lose another pack member to The Slow Death.

Marrok Blain is part of the North Territory pack. With his unique knowledge of The Slow Death, the debilitating progressive disorder that slowly kills with every shift, he offers help, knowing he’ll be met with resistance from his friend’s pack. What he doesn’t expect is the overwhelming pull to the stubborn yet undeniably gorgeous son of the East Territory Alpha.

Four packs coexisting with rising tensions, and a genetic disorder that reminds them of the common thread that connects them all. Zander and Marrok are the key to an uneasy alliance, or all the packs will suffer. Especially Zander, who discovers he’s got one more deadly fight to face.

That prologue had me hooked! The plot was fast-paced and interesting. I was invested in them finding Grady a donor. I felt bad for him... The slow death sounded so scary.

I loved Zander and Marroks chemistry. Their first time was pretty hot. They wanted to hate each other so bad 🤭

While it's a quick read, it easily kept me interested, which isn't always easy. The Slow Death is a nasty disease affecting shifters and Marrock is an expert in it and he's desperate to save his friend at any cost. He and Zander don't exactly hit it off and I loved the antagonism there. There was fire between them, a grudging acceptance of their situation.
It feels like the beginning of a series but leaves off with a strong HFN. Told in dual pov and is a medium/fast burn

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. A new take on the whole shifters cummituny storytelling, as these two amazing author's weave a tale totally different then what we are used to. After all its not normally we read of a disease that killing the host, but we have it with the slow death. The old ways had to die sometime, only if the current alpha would look towards a peaceful resolution instead hate and warfare.
Zander is looking for a cure, it was hard when watching a pack member suffer. Marrok is willing to help his friend anyway he can unwilling to watch a friend suffer, that was unbearable to witness. Even if Marrok had to confront the alpha of Grady's pack! While Andreas was grumbling of attitude adjustments, Zander more concerned of the lightning tingling thrusting in his body with the departure of the fuming Marrok.

Two fated mates from different packs have to fight pack prejudice, the conflict between the way things have always been done and the dawning of new ideas and try to save all the packs from a deadly disease. This has a bit of a Romeo and Juliet like feel in the resistance of the packs to mingle in any meaningful sense mixed with a wonderfully realized dystopian world where everyone is trying to understand and fight a disease before it claims even more victims. I love both of these author's separate works and they have made a wonderful start with this new series.

When there’s a newly diagnosed TSD patient, Marrok’s friend, he wants to help. He got knowledge about TSD. The East Territory pack leader isn’t in a hurry.
When Marrok meets Alexander there’s an instant attraction. He isn’t like his father, he wants to help.

Zander will always be the second choice to his father. His dead brother is still the first.
Being a first for his fated mate is confusing and everything.

It’s undeniable, their fated mates. It isn’t easy, they have to go through obstacles.
The disease is getting closer, Marrok, the TSD specialist, has to act.

A wonderfully written, original shifter story! Zander and Marrok were a great couple together.
Their interactions were intense. The cause around the Illness was good developed, like the whole story.
The secondary characters had a good place, not everyone was lovable.
I love shifter slash pack matter!
Overall an entertaining and original story, captivating, with great characters.

When Marrok’s friend from another pack is diagnosed with ‘The Slow Death’, Marrok is determined to do whatever it takes to save him. Unfortunately, his concern overrides his mouth when dealing with the rival pack Alpha – causing tension. Yet during the conflict, he meets Zander, whose effect on Marrok sends a visceral jolt to his soul and physical being. Regardless of the pull between them, they have a friend to save.
Recently, I’ve found myself drawn to shifter and paranormal stories. I'm not sure whether it’s a subconscious thing due to COVID and the need to get far away from reality or something else. Despite this story having a potentially deadly medical component, I am a fan of just about anything written by Nic Starr, so when I saw this collaboration piece with BL Maxwell – my interest was piqued.
The Slow Death is told in the third person, past tense from the viewpoints of Marrok and Zander. It’s not a long novel, but it contains some super imagery that gave me a good sense of small, out-of-the-way towns surrounded by hills and forests. Angst and dramatic scenes are not drawn out, which will suit some readers, although I prefer a bit more oomph. Nevertheless, what there is, shows pack dynamics, solidarity, and dissension where needed.
As the blurb says, Zander wasn’t meant to be an Alpha, but destiny had other ideas. Therefore, he fights feelings of being second best against an imposing Alpha father, and doing what is right for his pack. He is a conscientious individual who is more than he believes. His emergence into the person he was meant to be was a lovely process to witness, especially when given meaningful support. Marrok was my favorite character. He’s not afraid to speak his mind and fight for what’s right, no matter what lies in his path. He’s a fated mate with a chore of iron – marvelous.
This is the first novel in the Four Packs trilogy and is a scene setter with an arc. While this specific arc concludes, threads remain for future endeavors. I found The Slow Death to be a well-written, organized story with some steamy bits. And while I maintained a mildly fluctuating heart rate throughout, it was a good foundation for everything to come.

Marrok and Zander are shifters from from neighbouring territories.

They begin working together, united in the same goal of saving the life of a mutual friend and all fellow pack members suffering from The Slow Death.
I enjoyed the growth of both men as they got to know one other.

There are complicated pack dynamics at play, the old ways versus progress and co operation.

This is a well written story with good world building. It has great flow making it an enjoyable collaboration. I hope we see more of this series and these authors working together.

That was really good! A well written paranormal romance in which I loved both MCs and the plot was really interesting, as it involves pack business and diseases. Can't wait to read the second!

I have read both authors before but never together. This is a MM paranormal romance. Main characters are Marrok and Zander an alpha in waiting. Great title for the book. A horrible life ending disease plagues the 4 wolf packs. They have rarely worked together but Marrok has taken the lead in a donor registry for all wolves effected by The Slow Death. Zander and Marrok find love as they work together to save one of Zander’s pack members. Great start to the series. Can’t wait to read more.

Really good story line and hot and steamy romance

Wolves and tension between packs is nothing new in fiction but the storyline in The Slow Death is completely new to me and all the better for it. The fact that there is also a scorching attraction that combusts between two men who really don't want to like each other is just the icing on the cake.
The Slow Death is a terrible illness that affects some wolf shifters, and the name nowhere near covers how agonisingly painful it is. There is no cure yet but a solution had been found that keeps sufferers alive and in good health. It would be much easier if the four packs in the different territories would share information but relations between them are cordial at best and downright hostile at worst.
Alexander and Marrok work together reluctantly while trying to drag the packs out of the past, find help for their sick friend, and keep their hands off each other at all times.
The story about the blood disorder, its symptoms and the search for a cure was well thought out and realistic, and the tensions between packs and between Zander and his father ratcheted up the tension. I was completely hooked by it and have to know how it will all play out in the series.
The romance between Zander and Marrok was deftly interwoven into the story and enhanced it rather than took away from it. They both had extremely important parts to play in the fight to save their friend and ensure that Zander's pack could open discussions with other packs, and I'm sure that they will feature in future books as theirs was a very satisfactory HFN.

This new series already has me hooked with its detailed worldbuilding, interesting characters, and intriguing plot. I liked the way this first book tied up plot threads, yet left more dangling for the series, and a feeling that Zander and Marrok’s fight has only just begun.

I loved the set up of four packs not really trusting each other, yet needing to work together. The slow death is a clever idea, using the werewolves’ physiology against themselves. I wondered if Zander and Marrok’s friend would survive, and although I guessed what was going on with Zander, I do wonder if that particular plot thread is tied up as neatly as it seems to be.

I thought Zander’s feeling that he’s the second-best substitute for his late brother came across well, and I loved how he’s determined to be the best alpha for his pack. I liked how he cares about people, and isn’t as hung up about rules like his father. Marrock’s very driven, and I liked how there’s a bit of alpha in him through his grandfather. I’m wondering if that will develop into more as the story progresses. I liked Zander and Marrock’s connection and guessed they were fated mates very early on, although they needed to grow some clues. I liked how they became friends as well as mates.

I’m already hanging out for more, wondering what’s really going on with the other packs. I don’t trust Martin either, and the way he hangs around Marrock. I’d like to see more of Grady too. He’s a strong character, and I’d like to know more about the rare blood type, especially as TSD is a blood disorder.

This is book 1 of the Four Packs Trilogy. I am glad that I downloaded it. The premise is something new to me. I actually found it a little hard to get into at the beginning but once I was in, I was all the way in. This is the story of Alexander Kingston and Marrok Blain. Alexander is an alpha and destined to be the next leader of the East Territory Pack. He got that position by default when his older brother died. He is insecure in his right and will to lead. He feels like he is a fall back position that his father (the current leader) has no choice but to use. Marrok Blain is part of the North Territory Pack. He is also their resident expert on the deadly blood disorder killing the shifters - The Slow Death (TSD). When a friend and member of the East Territory Pack contracts the disorder, Alexander goes looking for help from the other Packs. Marrok agrees to help and then finds out it is his childhood friend that is afflicted. Sparks fly when Alexander and Marrok meet; and they don't stop. Alexander is willing to do anything to save a pack member but his leader and father is not as willing. He is keeping to the traditional posturing of old. He is not willing to open up lines of communication nor sharing of information. This all comes to a boiling point while trying to save their friend. Add in the thrill of a fated mate and you have quite an adventure. This is their story. It is very well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed it. I look forward to the next book.

The Slow Death is an interesting story with a different take on shifters that I really liked. It is well written, gritty, emotional, the world building is excellent, there are a few surprising twists and the characters are amazing. Zander and Marrok feel an instant connection when they first meet but they don't have time to explore their feelings as they are both desperate to help their friend Grady who is dying from TSD. The only way forward for Zander is to convince his father, the current Alpha of their pack, to put politics and grudges aside and work with the other packs to find a solution before it is too late for Grady. Marrok is doing everything he can to figure out how to help Grady when he is blindsided by his reaction to Zander. They have a lot to deal with but I love how their relationship develops. There are some wonderful secondary characters, the ending is good but more of a HFN instead of a HEA so I hope that we get to see a lot more of all of these characters in the future.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

That was close! Alexander/Zander, East Territory was the heir spare, until his brother was accidentally killed. Then he lived with his perception of being second choice. Marrok, North Territory is studying to get his PhD. His Grandfather is current Alpha and he will one day succeed him. Their mutual friend, Grady has been struck down with a debilitating disease , TSD, The Slow Death. Marrok offers to help, but Zander's Dad, the Alpha is reluctant to accept outside help. The story is a testament to old and new clashing and how they work to negotiate a solution, if it's possible. Will Zander and Marrok be able to save Grady? Will Zander's Dad listen, or will there be further conflict? Will Zander and Marrok be able to find a solution to their relationship? Intense story, lots of balls up in the air. Nicely done. Unique and somewhat thrilling!

I was intrigued from the first chapter and I liked the scene and character building from the start. There was a depth and passion to Marrok and Zander and their chemistry was off the charts. I love that Zander fought for what he believed was right no matter the cost and by doing so found himself and grew into the Alpha he was meant to be. TSD sounds horrid and I like that a disease is the "bad guy" in a shifter story rather than packs fighting or war of some sort. I also thought the stepping down of Zander's dad was surprising but in a good way, no unnecessary bloodshed. There is still a mystery and possible "deception" of the West Pack and I'm so curious to see if it where this will be taken in the next story. I'm also glad this one didn't end on a cliffhanger, there are still open storylines but thankfully it's a hopeful and happy ending!!

Interesting take on the shifter world

There was instant heat and antagonism between Zander and Marrok.
A terrible wasting disease has been decimating the packs.
There's a power struggle within the pack dynamics, mainly the old guard vying for tradition and the younger ones advocating for progress and change.
I really enjoyed seeing the connection and development between Zander and Marrok as they try to overcome their many obstacles, especially the main component of trying to save their mutual friend Grady.
There were plenty of twists and turns which kept me thoroughly engaged throughout.
The book ends in a HFN which I'm desperately hoping will resolve in the next book.

There are so many interesting elements in this book, many of which manage to feel both familiar and fresh at the same time. A world of shifters with complex and often fraught dynamics? Check. A fated mate pairing that comes up against obstacles posed by those dynamics? Check. Significant peril? Check. In this case, it's a deadly disease that the protagonists work together to combat, and it’s a challenging and emotional process. For interesting world building, compelling character development, and a narrative flow that was easy to get caught up in and never felt either too slow or overly rushed, I would definitely recommend this book.

Fantastic world building!! I felt like I fell down a rabbit hole. The story kept me engaged and entertained. I loved reading Marrok and Zander get to know one another! The men are from different packs and are looking to save a friend from rare disease. I definitely want more of this world with the complicated pack dynamics! Overall, a fantastic read! The story was really well written, the pacing flowed smoothly, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. The tagline caught my attention when this book came up for a review opportunity. Then I saw who the author was, and having read and reviewed a previous novel by the author, I was in.

As the tagline says, there is a rare disease that is killing werewolves. As the crown alpha of the Eastern pack, Zander is much concerned for one of his pack members who has caught the disease. Well, not caught, because it can’t be “caught” since it’s genetic, and some werewolves end up with it, while others don’t.

Marrok is a man of science and he’s been studying the disease and has made it his life’s work to stop it before anyone else dies.

I loved this book. Alexander Kingston soon to be alpha of the East territory. Not something that he wanted. A deadly blood disorder called the slow death. It is affecting his friend and he is mad at his father's stubbornness not to get help from the West territory. Marrok Blain is from the North territory and has extensive knowledge on the disease and is their to help his friend. Can Zander and Marrok beat the clock and save their friend? Will they find love with one another that could save one of them?

This was a really good book. I loved this take on the shifter world. I really enjoyed the connection and chemistry between Zander and Marrok. Shifters never get ill. Well in this book they do!
Zander and Morrok shouldn’t be mates. But they are!
Shifter packs that don’t get on, or trust the others. A disease that though rare doesn’t discriminate, means things have got to change. Watching Zander and Morrok fall in love, become mates, fight in pack politics and save a friend is really good reading. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Zander and Marrok certainly didn't have an easy time falling in love. Being in separate packs made their story complicated on top of trying to search for a solution to the disease that slowly kills their pack members. I enjoyed the story and the characters and am intrigued to see what stories follow in this series.

Wow, great start to a new series.

First, you would not believe that two authors wrote this book. Not once did I think there wasn't a seamless transition of each part.

Second, great world, character and story building. It is a unique storyline, and it kept me gripped all the way through. Again, not going to give anything away, but trust me, it's well worth a read, ohh did I miss the bit about telling you that there's a lot of hot s*x and two majorly hot main characters.

I loved the characters and the story, just in case I didn't quite relay that. So now I'm on my knees and hands together, asking that this turns into audio. I can imagine that would be incredible.

Seriously good narration but as usual I had to speed up the narration to 1.50 on audible.

This was a different take on shifters in the sense that they do get ill and that illness is directly linked to their shifting abilities.
Zander (a.k.a. Alexander) and Marrok are from two different packs and have to work together to get help from one of the other packs to get the help needed to save their friend. While doing this they find they are mates. Part of the storyline finishes up in this volume but others we can presumably follow in the following books in the series
This writing combination is off to a good start.

For the audiobook:
Narrator Guy Veryzer is a new to me. His voice is overall easy to listen to but for me when he voices the main characters it felt for me that the voice was made to old by the way he used it to have 'a tremble' in there for one of them. 4*
Overall 4*

Do you know when you have to fight for good
Alexander a.k.a. Zander is a son of the East territory pack alpha. His ideas are very different to his fathers, and as he gets ready to take over the pack he knows he must stand strong. When one of his pack comes down with TSD the slow death he knows he must do anything to help save him.
Marrok Blain is part of the North territory pack and he is studying to find a cure for TSD. When his grandfather rings and tells him that his friend has got TSD he knows he must get to the east territory and check on his friend. But when he gets there and finds out that the alpha is not doing everything he possibly can to save his friend, Marrok must take matters into his own hands. But what he didn’t know was that he was going to be a mate of the alpha son. And they can’t keep their hands off each other. Can they work together to find a Blood donor before it’s too late?? Will there be a happy ending for these two??.

I have got to say that I really enjoyed this read. It was quite addictive but I wasn’t expecting the little twist near the end. I really liked the connection and the passion between Zander and Marrok. They just seem to know what the other was thinking they had a Fantastic pair. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series because I think there’s a lot of stories for this pack.

The Slow Death by Nic Starr and B.L. Maxwell, is a great start of a new wolf shifter series, Four Packs Trilogy. A terminal genetic disease is showing up in the different packs. There is no cure or treatment and the person dies a horrible death. Marrok is a scientist who has a possible cure and Zander is the alpha-in-training of a rival pack. They have a mutual friend who is dying. Sparks fly when their hormones kick in and the drama begins. This is a story about doing the right thing, family, forgiveness, trust, and fated mates. The story starts out fast and doesn't stop until the happy-for-now end. It is well-written with enough backstory for the reader to understand a big picture of what is going on. This book sets the stage for the next in the series which is being released soon. Personally I can't wait to read it.
